Hi Zac! Definitely YES. I live in a 2BR apartment with my GSD for a year now. With proper training and exercise yes, it’s doable. I exercise him before I go to work and after work. He loves his crate but he stays in the living room when I’m at work. I got a puppy cam and he behaves like an angel. Not a single furniture broken since he was a puppy. I got my video game consoles, guitar lying around the house but he never touches them. He’s got a potty pad inside and the balcony, that’s where he does his business if not during walk. German Shepherds are very intelligent and very obedient. Training and boundary setting is the key! If there’s a will, things will work out.
Hello, I don’t want to bother you but I’m considering getting a male shepherd in an apartment with adequate exercise and attention of course. Would 2-3 hours of playtime/running outside with 3-4 bathroom breaks outside everyday be enough? Happy Holidays.
We need to pass a law in which it's illegal to have a dog if you don't have a yard. It's like keeping them locked up in a prison all day. It's not natural for them to stay cooped up. They should have access to the outside whenever they would like it via a doggy door to the backyard. Please no dogs in apartments.
I was an apartment dweller when I bought my 10wk old male GSD as a xmas present for myself. While Max acclimated I felt really guilty. He learned housetraining immediately and never had an accident in the apartment. He learned that all he had to do was come to me and whine if he had to go to the bathroom and I would drop whatever I was doing and take him outside immediately. When my Mom died and I came into the money from selling her trailer in a senior citizen's community, I immediately acquired a realtor and began a search for a house for rent. It took 4 months before my "pets allowed" search turned up a house that wasn't 20lbs dogs and under only or no German Shepherds allowed. Max now has a dog door leading to his own yard, takes himself out in the middle of the night to urinate instead of waking me up for a walk, and for the first time in the last 2 years of being in the apartment, I am sleeping the whole night thru without having to walk Max between 1 and 3 in the morning. Love is the most important ingredient to keeping any pet happy, but you should always try to give big pets all the space you can.
As long as you are there and interacts with your dog and backs it up with a lot of knowledge, I honestly think you could live in a box with any dog breed.
Great video Zac. Exercise is the key for German Shepherd's no matter where they live. I have to laugh Rosie my German shephered goes for her first walk around 6.30am but with daylight savings ending we are going now at 5.30am in pitch darkness for our walk. She is a smart dog, she starts by banging her tail on the ground or the bed. If I ignore that then the vocals start, if I try to ignore that it's face licking until I relent. Last night on channel 10 there was a documentary called Queen of the lions, Rosie was so engrossed in the documentary especially when the lions hunted at night time the sheer focus from her as she watched the TV was amazing as she took it all in, her head turning sideways from time to time especially listening to the hyenas as they talked to each other.
I have a 1 year old German Shepherd named Kaiser. I live in a rather small apartment and I was worried at first however he's very well behaved and quiet, i take him out for walks twice a day for 1/30 hour each and sometimes when he wants to walk more he'll put his paw on my thigh before letting out a bark. Its great that I have a park literally right infront of my apartment so it definitely makes it easier along with there being another park just 20 minutes away.
Hi, can I ask you a question? How small is your apartment? How many square feet? Im just curious, because I'm considering a dog but I live in a studio apartment. Of course the dog would get plenty of exercise and outdoor time but I'm just wondering if it's doable or just "too much".
What helped us with our gsd? The rule saying that the play (active) time is only outdoor and apartment is for relax. I agree, leaving in apartment is quite challenging with this kind of dog ut for active person it shouldn't be a blocker :) Really nice video :)
Thank you for helping educate people which is so crucial before they get any dog! AGREE with all you said! Patience , training dog and humans! Lol! But most important we must understand what they need and their behavior and know how to handle! I will only correct ..they need to go potty often as much we can take them outside! If they hold or people make them hold potty or worse punish them for not handle peeing! Any animal like a human can potentially have health problems! And emotional to if get punished for accident the dog can't hold ! More going outside with the dog ! BLESSINGS! LOVE to SWEETHEART Lucy❤🐕🤗
Thank you for answering the question of having a GSD in a small space! And especially the part with your Mom and the mobile living space! I've thought about getting a campervan and a GSD so that was really helpful! I can also relate to leaving the hotel room without phone, car keys, and keycard many times, but never at night or in my pjs so I'm sorry for laughing as hard as I did! 😂

She is very calm!! Has she always been this way? My 10month old GSD is kind of off the wall despite exercising him. He often annoys our other dogs with his non stop wanting to play lol. I’ve been told it SHOULD get better as he gets older
By the way, we just had a horrible night in an Airbnb with Rocky. The vies went crazy and stage an entire concerto last night. Which meant he was barking in and off all night. We got hardly any sleep.
loved the end of this video lol Miss Lucy is always on point now the other dog wasn't having it lol i have family who are moving into a tiny house with a GSD and he is 89 pounds it should be fun to see how he reacts to such a small space ,yall take care and thank you so much for your videos ....stay safe...
The question around 12:30 was funny .. if you could have your time again, would you keep your dog? She's like er yes haha As someone with a ground floor apartment this video has been very helpful. Thanks!
I loved this! Im getting a shollie (GSD X border collie) and i live in a 1 bed house, always worried me that i don’t have a garden but i live next to a ginormous field and I’m a 10 min walk away from our beach. So i think i’ll be just fine! Awesome video 💜
