    Thank you. The reason I do YT is for my boys, I think it helps them to visualize it and not just following a recipe. I want them to have the life skill of basic cooking. I wish I could have had videos of my Grandma cooking, that would have really been something special.

    How sweet of your son, those are the best kinds of gifts. My kids bought me a really nice rubber spatula from a kitchen store for Christmas one year. After dinner when I was cleaning up, I'd make a point to use the scraper to scrape the platters clean and it always seemed like there was enough leftovers to make an extra plate for our 93 year old neighbor. I still remember how proudly the boys were,taking the plate of food to our neighbor. We called it our "spatula of abundance". hahaha

    I love your rolling pin. To me, the ability to have your grandmothers rolling pin is like having her with you as you bake. I can just see her smile at you using it.
    Thank you for sharing your cooking. while I can make a good meal, I was never "taught" so I have a lot of the basics missing.

    My granny made hers like Taleulah's grandma. If she was alive she would be 126. I would set at a little table in her kitchen and watch her mix them in a wooden bowl and form them in her hands ever so lightly. She had a big black pan (from many hours of use) with lard in it she dipped them in and pressed them up close and snug, she would take the back of a spoon and put a dent on the top. Thanks for that memory again.God Bless your Sweet Heart!!

    Breakfast for dinner is my kind of meal. I know how important that rolling pin is to you. I had my grannie's but lost it in a move. I love using items with family history behind them. I still have a quilt she made that I snuggle with when reading. Thanks for sharing! Terry

    Hand formed biscuits is an art form! I have never been able to do it that way, you really have to have a feel for the dough. I have arthritis in my hands and it hurts too. I'm not sure what it is about poking the top that makes them rise so much higher but it works. I don't cook many recipes with lard but I make my biscuits with them! Shelby

    OK, grandma had to be from the south. That looked like my mama's biscuits and gravy....lol Mom doesn't usually roll hers out though. She just forms them in her hand double dips them like that in the lard and into the oven. Thanks for the memories and the great video. God bless.

    It is like riding a bike, it will come back to you. Once you start making them again you get a feel for the dough.
    Especially someone like you that can cook.

    Terry I was so shocked when non gave ne the rolling pin back in 1980, because I have two other sisters. She said she gave it to me because I would always help Grandma when she baked. It was so heartfelt, that it made me cry. I hope to have a daughter in law or grand daughter some day to give it to, Shelby

    "Looks pretty good!" as you'd say. The little things that a good cook can teach you like coating the biscuits with the lard before leaving them rest to cook. That's what I loveabout RUclips. Love your vidoes. Keep 'em coming!

    Excellent. I think I'm going to do butter/lard. I will try it this coming week and let you know. Thanks again.

    Sounds like she had skill, I've only seen that done by women that really know what they are doing. Those are the best, hand formed biscuits but you really have to have a feel for the dough to get it right. What a great memory indeed.

    We have an entire room devoted to books. The result of the husband working at a book store when I met him and having no cable television for the first 9 years of our marriage.

    Yum! I loved hearing the story about your rolling pin. I didn't have one so I told my son I thats what I wanted for Christmas this year. He bought me a beautiful marble rolling in that sits in a wooden stand. He also surprised me with a cast iron torilla press. I have yet to try that. :) Thanks for your vids, I think your awesome!

    You know Kelly, there is something about a book that I just love. It doesn't feel right to me reading it on a computer or cell phone. My kids say Mom you are so old fashioned, just download it. To me it is just not the same. I could get lost for days in a good bookstore. I really like the ones that have sofas and puffy chairs, I end up buying more because I take the time to see if I really like the book. Does PW's book have recipes in it too?

    Just don't overwork the dough and chill your butter, lard (or shortening, whatever you have) and flour in the fridge. That is it.

  • @TheQueensCabinet

    Thanks, Ken called me from work and wanted breakfast for dinner. I made some Orange Julius that were really YUMMY

  • @TheQueensCabinet
    @TheQueensCabinet  11 лет назад

    Make sure the fats and flour are chilled in the fridge and just don't over work the dough and they should turn out.

    As a matter of fact PW does have a few recipes in the back of the book. I love books too. We once got a huge haul of old books for$1 a bag at a antique store. They were just trying to get rid of them! I got some of my best cookbooks and classics no longer in print that way. And I love you read cookbooks. Lol my MIL thinks it's funny that I'll open a cookbook she bought me as a gift and I'll just pour over it. Don't you just love the smell of an old book?

    I think it is made of maple, I have used it since 1980. It means a ot because it was my Grandma's

  • @TheQueensCabinet
    @TheQueensCabinet  11 лет назад

    Yes it is one of my treasured possessions, I remember my Grandma using it to make biscuits, and pie crusts. OMGoodness her pie crusts were the best, she always added a tiny bit of vinegar to her dough. I don't have any daughters to pass it on to, so I'll have to wait for a daughter in law. Shelby

    Busted....I am binge-watching your channel. Don't you just love your cast iron pan? These used to be my 'camping pans' but my last 'non-stick' pan got too bad to use and I didn't get a chance to replace it. Out came my cast iron pan and I will never go back. Cast-iron...doesn't have the bad chemicals, last FOREVER and have the absolute best non-stick surface if you take care of them.

      Marisa I LOVE cast iron, it holds the heat so well. I have some from my mom and Ken's mom, they last generations. Do you ever watch TheBossofTheSwamp here on YT? Super cool channel about this guy who lives in a cabin, has a small carbon foot print and cooks in cast iron. Shelby

    Every time I have sat down today, I think darn it I need to measure that skillet. I apologize for my delay. It measures 14 inches by 2 3/4 inches high. I can't see any markings on the bottom, it is really old as are my eyes. hahaha Shelby

    Hi Shelby... why did your lard look beige-brown? Was it bacon fat? The lard here (tender flake) is white and looks like crisco.

    • @TheQueensCabinet
      @TheQueensCabinet  6 лет назад

      Hi Crystal, it was just rendered lard that had cracklings cooked in it for cornbread. Shelby
