      Used to be able to tell between the aircraft models too with 747-200 having different engines to the -400. We also get them at 05:00 in the morning too if there is a tail wind over the Atlantic. Jet wash is also a problem, my mum had 30 roof tiles ripped off by one jet.

      You probably found it comforting bc you grew up with it. It’s the same for me but with trains. When I was really little we lived next to a railroad track, and trains passed by it all the time. As we moved to other places, we sometimes still had those tracks nearby. Even now I live not to far from one, so to say the least, I’m pretty sure it’s only comforting because I grew up with it.

    I live under the flightpath of the jets travelling from the UK to the American West Coast. They go over at 44,000 feet though. It is hard to think of them as the same machines shown here, but of course they are. They are a benign presence, and when you look up at the stars on a wintry night and see the navigation lights of a jet it is reassuring somehow. I never knew where the planes were going before the era of plane tracker apps.

    Hasn't changed at all. I lived at 17 Clare Road Hounslow 10 minutes from Heathrow Airport as a small child in the 60s and the landing path was directly over our roof. Usually you could see 3 planes at a time approaching on the horizon but at certain times you could spot 4 planes. We didn't take any notice of the noise as children, we used to read the numbers under the wings fuselage as they went over. Often we'd take the A1 bus from Hounslow West to the Airport (HOUNSLOW WEST WAS THE END OF THE LINE BACK THEN) We'd go plane spotting and listening to pilots talking on other people's devices and then we'd nip across the road to the AMBASSADOR BOWLING LANES and amusement arcade then back home 😂 I went back in the 80s and had forgotten just how loud those jets were !!

      The old checkerboard approach into Runway 13 at Kat Tak was quite spectacular however in an airliner travelling between 120 and 140 kts roughtly, the chances of being able to see in anyones window for longer than a fraction of a second let alone be able to identify what they were doing is very very slim.
      You can also see in any Kai Tak video taken from around the checkerboard that aircraft don't fly between buildings just very low over them, hence why you see spectacular shots of them over Kowloon.

    • @czwarty7878
      @czwarty7878 9 месяцев назад +7

      Yeah honestly the issue with airplane noise is somewhat exaggerated. The noise of these engines is not harsh to ear and you quickly begin to filter it out, noise from cars on roads, railways or construction sites are way worse. If I had to choose between living by an airfield vs living by busy road I would choose airfield 100%. I don't know what is the explanation for this, there must be something more to sound issue than just decibels. I hate excess noise and all in all I think noise pollution is very underestimated issue, but somehow airplanes really don't bother me at all

      I remember back when the Airbase was still active in Frankfurt. The first planes to arrive very early in the morning were the US Military's C5-Galaxy Freighters...these had a very distinctive loud organlike sound. As you said: You could literally tell the time, roll around and get some more sleep because the civilan airliners coming in after were much quieter. Nowadays even more so, an A380 is very quiet in comparison.
