I was once in a flight like that, we barely touched the ground in our destination and they decided it saferto take us back all the way to the origin, some 40 minutes away.
basic aerodynamics and ballistics - crosswind turns the plane in to a weather vane. In order to maintain stability of forward flight the plane is pointing "forward" into the wind. The effect is vector of the plain remains the same (down the runway) while the nose points into the air flow. It's scary but its the way to keep the plane from rolling over.
You can see the rudder move to turn the plane left to line up with the runway too early. He should have held the cross wind crab just a second or two longer.
What skill! This is fascinating to watch. Pilots deserve all the respect they get for having the nerves and the talent to do this, not to mention all the hard work in training

This may be a silly question, but is it possible for the plane to continue cruising until the crosswinds settle before landing assuming they have enough fuel? Or perhaps choose a different airport with better conditions to land on?
This is super late but yes. Diversions to other airports are often done in poor weather and is something you learn all the way back at private training.
