      I didn't like ver 1.0 of it, maybe I'll demo the newer version. I have to say though, your master still sounds better. Tonally they're pretty close, but yours has better more analog front to back depth. Master plan sounds a bit more flat line dynamically.

      Nice channel! Imho, MPs master was way more controlled in the lows compared to your master which was way to heavy and loose. the brightness was almost the same but Mps width was better, and also it was a tiny bit more clear, less muddy. :)

      I'm very amature in mastering. when I try to master my old recording with masterplan it seems like a heavy curtain was lifted open and my music sounds clearer, louder, wider... its so good.

      I had enjoyed one or two of your videos in the past when I discovered you and I subscribed. so I liked the straightforward tone.
      As for sponsored reviews, I am still divided on the subject because I know a RUclipsr who, despite the fact that he is straight in his boots, has gradually slipped into style complacency; "It's an unpretentious plugin but it's funny or it has this little utility...", it's still honest but it offers something good every week...
      And in reality there is not every week an essential plugin for mixing or production.
      Lots of repetitions or different aesthetic packaging.
      After 2 years of research, I am only interested in RUclips channels that have something different to offer.
      One video and half an hour is wasted quickly. So for a limited choice of plugins, which are really important: yes.
      Otherwise I'm leaving.

    I'm not a pro obviously, but I really like what Ozone does - 1st of all, it even TELLS YOU "here's a starting point" so you're expected to tweak it, 2nd, it gives you couple of "sets" of components and their settings, so you can choose which style of mastering suits the music better, 3rd you can on / off any of the components AND you can use any and each of the components individually as separate plugins, which is huge.
    Not saying Ozone is end-all-be-all, but it's definitely competent enough.

    • @FoliaSound
      @FoliaSound  7 месяцев назад +13

      I have a serious problem with Ozone, which is: its "starting point" sounds worse than the raw mix. This is what I mainly point out in iZotope tools, also in Neutron - the "smart" functions actually do you harm instead of helping...

    • @Artek604
      @Artek604 7 месяцев назад +3

      @@FoliaSound I see. Well, my music and/or my mastering chops are apparently not good enough, because for me it always sounds better. Mind, not perfect. But better enough for a quick master to publish on SC or YT ;) :D

    • @FoliaSound
      @FoliaSound  7 месяцев назад +9

      I once reviewed auto functions of Neutron on my chan, you'll find the vid easily. It was really, really bad. Then I tried it with Ozone and I was thinking to myself: well, when you release something and market it as a "smart" solution helping producers out, you have to take responsibility for that, you're a serious company.

    • @Artek604
      @Artek604 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@FoliaSound Oh, ok. I never used Neutron in its "AI" mode. I just use it as competent EQ, compressor, etc. With Ozone, I find the results good enough for me. Also, I can actually see what it's doing and learn from it. Whereas this plugins has just couple of cryptic knobs & that's it. Also, you seem to like the gentler, rounder, delicate mastering so maybe Ozone isn't to your liking, because it tries to be more aggressive? But maybe if you were looking for this type of mastering, you'd see it differently?
      Anyway, not trying to criticise your stuff (far from it!) or say one is better than the other. I was just surprised by harsh words about Ozone. But it's all subjective to some extent, so that's OK :)

      @mikesrandomchannel 5 месяцев назад

      @@FoliaSound100% this! I’ve had tools that analyze things (limiters, EQ, whatever) and the suggestions have been OK as a starter but Ozone, Neutron? These turns my slightly too quiet, maybe not quite glued mix (or maybe slightly flat track) into just … a mess.

    the day I tried this plugin, my version of ozone was found on ebay a few hours later and I never regretted it, no ten functions here but just good sound, just the limiter is worth it purchase price, this plugin is literally impossible to make sound bad.

  • @spikesguitarcamp
    @spikesguitarcamp 7 месяцев назад +11

    IMO..the rough mix started out too muddy, and OZONE jumped all over that, but resulted in a little too much brightness on the first pass, (but tamed that boomy low end). That's only the starting point, and all the parameters can be tweaked after the initial try, (along with importing reference tracks to match volume, eq, etc). IMO, once again, it had the most clarity. All the other mixes continued with a sort of sluggish low end that to me, sounds a little boomy..I'm listening in my studio on monitors with a sub, and high quality headphones. While Master Plan seems to be a decent alternative at a reasonable price, it just can't compare to the flexibility of a mastering suite like OZONE.
    Good vid though. It's good to see more manufacturers getting into this arena, and hopefully lights a fire under manufacturers like Izotope who admittedly can get a little complacent. 🤘

    It’s very nice, indeed. I tried the demo, and liked the results. Then again, I already spent over a year (and $$$) building (and learning) a new mastering chain (in case folks here are curious, it’s the Pulsar EQs and Mu compressor, the Kazrog K Clip and the Sonnox Inflator). It gets me very similar results, lets me see what I am doing, and is always a learning experience. Back in the day I was mastering with just the Eiosis Air EQ, the SSL comp and the Waves L2. That was fine too, but these all in one plugins are a real time saver. I still prefer the multiple plugin chain, but Masterplan is a great investment for people looking to get into mastering, or those looking to change things up. Simplifies the chain too. Good review!

Master Plan sounded great straight out of the box BUT I also tried the God Particle, and I really liked the 'magic sauce' widening type of thing it did that I can't seem to achieve with other plugins. Master Plan doesn't seem to get the same 'width' but then again it sounds less invasive (God Particle seemed to create a huge bump in the lower mids - but I guess you are supposed to mix into it and therefore compensate for that?). Meh given they are the same price it would be great to get your thought on Master Plan compared to the God Particle as I'm not sure which one to buy.

I wouldn't compare it with Ozone 10 in the way you had done as it auto estimates a master when to be fair both your own mix and Master plan where built up from scratch. Maybe show Ozone in its basic state and built a master without its auto suggested master. Ozone 10 may have failed in its auto analysis but that's a different test to the one conducted for this review.

In the one you did with master plan, i felt you boosted highs a bit too much. That clicky sound was a bit too much for me. As for ozone, i know you dont like izotope stuff. They doo tend to brighten everything up a bit too much. They do however, give you a lot of controls. Its not really set it and forget it tool. But it does give me ideas of what needs to be fixed. If you dont want the brightness, you can try 'folk' preset. Rock, pop and edm are very bright.

    There are several other vst with few knobs just like Master Plan and none of them will get you there unless you have a specific mix. That what makes them not flexible enough. Every genre requires different mixing and mastering approach that is why you need more serious tools. If you expect Ozone to magically automatically master your music than you are missing the point of this extremely powerful set of tools.
    It can be a good starting point where you get feedback how to adjust you mix to fit the particular mastering finalizer. I have tried pretty much all of them and only custom chains for example bulit from True Iron, Glue, Gullfoss, Ozone Low End Focus, Ozone Stabilizer, Lurssen, Ozone Maximizer or others can produce industry standard masters without dedicated hardware.
    I have sold all of my studio speakers and only use Neumann NDH20 for reference. My older productions from few years ago are not produced well enough due to mixing and mastering on speakers and relying on simpler mastering tools similar to Master Plan.
    Best regards!

    There is a strange effect with width in stereo with Master Plan. Perhaps you cranked it a little too much, or perhaps I am just hearing it wrong, listening on MacBook Pro speakers so arguably not the best for comparing.

    I don't understand why anyone cares about sponsored videos, I think the only people who care are professional haters like weaverbeats. I am happy to be a paid sponsor for any plugin company, just understand I am chronically honest so if I hate it I will still say I hate it. jaja. Perhaps that's why no one's hiring me.

    I wouldn't compare it to Ozone, both have different approaches. Quality-wise, it seems good. And personal taste: the Master Plan master sounded a bit more attractive to me. There was something in the low mids that made it stand out a bit clearer.

    I use Ozone for mastering, however, I like the result that version 9 offers me better, it truly calibrates a starting point. Version 11 is too aggressive in the proposal, although with the Audiolens references you can obtain interesting results, for me, it is not something that I would use professionally, for the moment I use it to test and analyze things (I am referring to the AI of the version 11) I don't see the point in automated mastering services, none of them offer a matching sound, there is no "prosody".

    Re Master Plan then it was very, very close - maybe tiny differences but you'd never know if you didn't A/B them. However, I doubt you'd have been able to achieve those results with Master Plan if you didn't have the experience of mastering with your existing chain. Yes, the tool is good but if you didn't know how to master then it would be useless and I'm not convinced you could learn with Master Plan. But may be wrong.
    Re sponsored videos the it's totally up to you of course but imho you can't draw a hard line between "paying for my time" and "paying for my opinion". However hard you try and avoid it then it does taint anything you say regarding the subject of the video and its competitors. But we all gotta make a living! 😉

      Hey! Sure thing, mastering skills are still needed to tweak any plugin right. As for my opinions - I first tweaked the plugin and then decided to cooperate on it. I have quite a lot of products I just turn down no matter the payment - I simply don't review them or shoot negative reviews on my own. So, I still believe I can make it fair, especially that my income comes straight from my music and sound design for more that 15 years now :) Cheers!

    As much as I don't like the company, Ozone is a professional box of tools unlike this thing that don't let much control over the user. So I don't see the point of saying "Forget Ozone etc.". This is not even in the same league.

    Personally I find all of these plugins unhelpful, including ozone. I would much rather: get the mix as close as i can without anything in the mix bus at all; then go through my large pile of mostly cheap, some free console emulations, and I end up with something that suits the genre and track, gets close, and THEN if somehow I have still managed to not get there, I might use say a Dynamic equalizer to take care of finicky details. What I do NOT want is an AI essentially moving faders and knobs without checking, making decisions about EQ curve that I usually find banal and shallow, and even if I liked them, it would not teach me anything except some small refinement of "what i like."
    The whole thing is silly, but apparently people are really interested in cranking out music without really thinking or listening much? I dunno, I got into it because I enjoy that part.

    Hey Paul, interesting proposition. I trust your integrity and opinions. In other words, I believe you when you say you will not publish a bullsh#t review to make a bad plugin seem good. :-) And, why not get paid to give a company a positive review? That makes sense. Your reviews are thoughtful and you give plugins real-world tests. The area you want to address is duplication of functionality between plugins. For example, one saturation vs another. Invariably, ppl will want to know "which one is better"? How will you handle it when you have reviewed one good saturator and now another good one wants a review? Will you have a ranking system? Perhaps a "value proposition" system - ie, taking into account price to performance ratios. However, sonics and functionality are subjective. You can address sonics somewhat with Plugin Doctor-type analysis, but functionality and GUI ...
    The other 'gotcha' that might get you is multi-function plugins. Which Ozone or RX-type suite is better than another? I'm sure with thought yielding guidelines these questions can be addressed. Good luck. :-)
