    Haha! Being a software developer with a lot of corporate experience, I can verify that this is spot on. It's actually sometimes quite hard to swim against the current at corporates and try to achieve sth for the end user. People will literally fight you if it suits their carreer. You can see this in any industry though, not just the plugin industry.

    I’m impressed. I was a recording engineer in the 80’s and progressed to mixing and mastering in the 90’s, and I feel like this plugin is doing its job correctly. It’s including all of the fundamental functions the way they would be getting applied when these sciences were originally being invented and innovated upon.
    It then wisely makes use of everything genuinely better that the digital realm has brought to the table, not the least of which is the automatic gain-balancing that’s being applied in at least these key stages in which they have included it.
    As has been pointed out, with two hands this was always an option in the analog realm but is impossible with only one mouse, and there is simply no reason to omit this in a digital processor.
    Of all the “instant master” plugins that have cropped up in recent years, several of which I own, this one presents itself with a structure that most closely resembles a professional mastering chain, while maintaining the simplicity that we have just seen demonstrated.
    Yeah, I’ll get this despite having paid for others because tools are tools and better is better. I don’t marry myself to others just because I paid for it, I’ve got work to do.
    If I’ve done professional level mastering, why would I want a simplified product like this?
    Because I’m not always acting in that capacity. More and more often I’m in the role of producer, so I’m working with the musicians more closely and that demands my time and my focus. I want something that is acting as a simplified version of the real deal, not something targeted at those who have not yet learned their way around the top-tier tools and techniques. This way I can spend just a quick 5-minutes at the end of the session day and punch up a polished sounding rough mix for people to take home with them.

      Dane… as one who has recorded with some of the greatest recording engineers (some who also mixed)… Armin Steiner, Tom Dowd, Peter Kelsey, etc I feel my songs and vocals were made easier due to the skill these folks presented in a session. Thus, “progressed” can mean several things, I’d say in the scheme of things, what goes down during the session (and overdubs) are where much of the magic happens… or SHOULD happen. My engineers were like an assistant producer more often than not.

I have a different experience, I find a lot of my feedback usually ends up making it into the release, heck a few of my ideas have developed into full blown plugins but I do understand where you are coming from. As a consumer when I write into customer service to the companies I don't work with nothing even happens and I have found some pretty big issues to say the least. At the end of the day I really enjoy testing plugins and giving feedback on the tools myself and my colleagues will use day in and day out to help make great records. Great vid! Looking forward to checking out the plugin. I won't use it in my work but I'll still check it out and if I like it I will gladly support the company.

    as someone who co-founded a software company then grew it up and then got it acquired by a large company i can tell you that yes, when you are in the startup phase the passion and being responsive to the clients is paramount and the center of the world, but when you join a larger org, it's too easy to say that feedback is dismissed or ignored and that it's all about promotion is not nearly a nuanced enough perspective. i've been in the driver's seat this whole process in my company and when we were acquired we were primarily left alone for nearly a year but then what starts happening is there starts to be competing interests within a large org, and depending on how good you are at managing product and expectations (we are mostly good at it versus mostly bad) drives a lot of the outcomes as development continues. so yes, it's easy to say big companies are just out to "screw" people out of their money, that is, i believe, highly flawed and again not complete and lacks the actual real nuance that reflects reality.

    This plugin sounds decent, I noticed the "thick" knob working well and that multi-band feature is cool. Also really nice to see the Lufs on the bottom.
    As a former graphic designer, I think it could use a bit of a design update like a smaller "Master Plan" logo that is easier to read and less distracting and maybe adding your own logo somewhere small to help promote your brand? Also to be an extra details snob, I noticed the "Low", "High" & "Wide" words are a little off center LOL. Not a major issue but something like that would annoy me to see every time I open the plug-in.

    9:30 this is a point I often have to bring up with clients if they use something like the loudness penalty analyzer. Loudness is something that should always be intentional in both mixing & mastering. Particularly with certain genres, like a lot of metalcore, edm & modern hip hop, for instance. We are all used to hearing them with very little dynamic range. It's to a point where it kind of just sounds "wrong" if you don't make it as loud as you reasonably can.

  • @TraxtasyMedia

    I actually can say there are some artist featured plugins, that are in my opinion completely worth their money, for example Nicky Romero's Kickstart 2, Infected Mushrooms Wider, Dada Life's Sausage Fattener & Endless Smile. So they sat together with professionals, or Serum/Cthulu which became very popular by deadmau5, because he worked with Steve Duda on it and thus plugins took a long procress to create and mind about the issues that may occur. So yeah, I use these plugins pretty often, they're simple to understand, expect Serum, they are minimalistically designed and everything does, what it's suppossed to do, without any real deep issues in the backhand. So yes, creating plugins nowadays can be very easy and FL Studio has got the Patcher, which allows you to create own tiny plugins within FL which can be used for mixing, autotune, sidechaining, kick creation, etc. but here's the thing: they are not that versatile enough to span a wide range of flexibility and versatility to be used in a mastering or mixing process for a good result. Some of these plugins may cause big problems in the gainlevel, or cross the Nyquist, or no proper anti-aliasing happens, probably some phase issues can even be the worst of all results and yes not many people have got the time to write music and sit down and learn code to create an own plugin for the market, that does what's supposed to do, for example coding an accurate limiter. In Patcher you can take a preset and use it on the busses, but the frequency response might be sometimes work more differnt, as you aimed to, so yes long story short: Plugins can safe tons of time, but the downsite is that most plugins have got issues in their coded structure and telling the companies to rework plugins in a different perspective or further change interfaces probably makes them ignore but aware of their issues, but they got no knowledge to fix them...

    Ok. I guess someone need to clear things up about why super loud needed in dance music. I prioritise dance music here because the main clients of plugin makers actually are bedroom dance music producers. Simply because this type of producers dominate at the moment want it or not.
    And why loud mixes are important in dance music. Because if bedroom producer will mix a track at -1 dbtp and -14 lufs then when this track will be mixed by DJ straight after any track made by established producer who mixed a track at -1dbtp and -2 lufs (yes) it simply will be alot quieter. And no one going to play this track. You can not simply turn the volume up as usually clubs allow 2 yellows on Pioneer DJ mixer (3dbtp). But why established producers mix their tracks so loud? Its just sound better in clubs. And at the end of the day its a club music.

And BTW, I'm not talking about barebones stuff with no interface like Airwindows (all due respect), but good looking and highly functional GUIs.
    And I do mean a full suite, not just the basics. You have basic digital clean compressor and the likes,but also hardware emulations like LA-2A (2 versions), 1176 (3 versions), at least 4 different delays and at least 3 reverbs, console emulations, meter strips, noise gates, signal to noise ratio meter... While there is certainly some correlation between quality and and success, it is by no means absolute. Not even close. So while I respect the mindset (and my approach is to focus on quality as well), I do not believe that that necessarily translates into making money. Turns out you are more likely to get what you aim for! If you aim for money, you'll get money. If you aim for quality, you'll get quality. But while we're talking about the slight correlation between quality -> money, there is also a slight correlation between money -> quality. Obviously, with more money, you have more resources that CAN be invested in quality. I'm afraid it's not all as simple and good as we'd like it to be. But great to know you're driving a pink Suzuki!

    There is something that needs to be added to what you are saying.
    Software development, especially when is low level, can be extremely expensive.
    A competent low level developer with strong skills and experience will cost you in the hundreds of thousands per year and for good reasons. The fact that the plugin industry is pushing for crazy low prices is one of the reasons why there is virtually no space for improvement, since improving a product you already sold is a cost with no return for a plugin manufacturer and the company won't have a major income injection until the next product is released, which brings a lot of pressure in buisness planning.
    The solution to this issue, theoretically, are subscription models.
    I am not gonna argue that subscription models are perfect and that there should be a forced switch to them like Waves tried to do (with their deserved shitstorm)... but as a senior software developer with many years of experiences in software product development and maintainance, I can guarantee it's the only buisness model that makes sense for sustainable software quality.
    The fact that the industry started to push prices toward the 30/40$ per plugin in the last 5-6 years is a major reason why most plugins get so little improvement over time. Despite i benefitted a lot from it as a home studio producer, I think it was an unconsiderate overstretch, and I suppose it made working environments for audio developer very toxic over time... but I have no experience in this industry so maybe I am wrong.

  • @AnthonyMcBazooka
    @AnthonyMcBazooka Год назад +1

    The problem with FabFilter is that their plugins are far too expensive. Prices like that can usually only be justified by being total niche products (since only few copies will be sold), not by the quality of a product, since a good quality product with appeal to a large audience will sell a lot. So for me they are among the most unethical companies around since they could easily charge far less (like Valhalla DSP for example) and be much more accessible to musicians who can't simply afford to spend >150€ on one single plugin.
    I fully agree on your statement about wars. Thanks a lot for that!
    Can’t say anything yet about the tested plugin. I will try it but for now the price is again something that I’m not willing to pay for something that has lots of cheaper alternatives.

    • @xanderpills
      @xanderpills Год назад

      The logic of this comment isn't too sharp.
      First off, companies should charge what they think their products are worth. If you are able to create a plugin that excels in every category, nothing wrong in asking some dough for it. Have to remember that price always has an effect on the way us consumers view a company or brand. Fabfilter caters for professionals and the price is what you'd pay for a tool that never fails when deadlines are pushing hard.
      Fabfilter as a company obviously borrows a trick or two from Steve Jobs-era Apple, where they've focused first and foremost on GUI design. It is flawless. Other is the sound quality, which is also such where it's impossible to make anything sound bad. It's creamy. Then there's relentless beta-testing: I can't remember ever getting a FF-plugin to crash, let alone causing any problems in opening a song/project. Last but not least, every plugin does what you want with a couple of clicks BUT has depth that goes so deep you'd need a studio diving suit and an oxygen tank to get to the bottom.
      This all screams premium, premium, premium. Fabfilter deserve every dollar, period.
      P.S. : It's the only company who could design the ultimate EQ plugin. Classic of classics, I would argue it's the best plugin ever, period. It's like they designed the kitchen knife all over again.

    • @AnthonyMcBazooka
      @AnthonyMcBazooka Год назад

      You can't compare how prices for hardware are calculated (since there is a cost for manufacturing every unit and premium usually means higher costs) with prices for software (no matter how well written the code is, copying it costs the same). It doesn't matter if a software is being sold 100 times for 10 € or 10 times for 100 €. So justifying software (!) prices with “premium” is pointless and you should be careful with insulting other people's logic if this is you sole argument.

    • @xanderpills
      @xanderpills Год назад

      @@AnthonyMcBazooka Hardware, software, snake oil, petrol oil. Doesn't matter. If it is something, anything, that gives value to a customer and they think it is worth the asked price, they can ask for it.
      Just because the other doesn't have reproduction / manufacturing costs doesn't mean you couldn't ask a "premium" price. A Fabfilter product probably has had thrice the cost of development than a ValhallaDSP product. Thus, the price has been well calculated.
      If I think about my copy of Fabfilter Pro-Q 3, it works so seamlessly with my Apple Magic Mouse that has smooth scrolling, I could never ever mix as fast with any other EQ. This means it has already paid off multiple times.

    • @AnthonyMcBazooka
      @AnthonyMcBazooka Год назад

      FabFilter plugins are fine, no doubt about that, I don't think there is any need to discuss this aspect.
      And yes, they can ask whatever they want for it and if enough people are willing to buy it for that price, good for them. In the same way, Waves can totally ask for money for their update plan if enough people are willing to buy it. Yet people have the right and good reasons to complain about both.
      The thing is, the calculation for a software developer for getting their development costs back is simply how much do I need and how many copies can I potentially sell. If they can sell 900 copies for 50€ or 300 copies for 150€ and they make the decision that the latter, it means that they make the conscious decision that it's more important to them to be elitist than accessible. And I am pretty sure that FabFilter do like to have this image, knowing that their customers also prefer being elitist, going around and tell everyone how superior their plugins are. And I think that stinks. And you won't change my mind about it this way.

    • @xanderpills
      @xanderpills Год назад

      @@AnthonyMcBazooka I don't think anyone thinks their elitists. Fabfilter are simply a known brand in modern audio. If I think of "elitism", I think of Universal Audio and their pricing. There's your cult right there.

    There are a lot of "one-stop-shop" mastering programs out there, and if you need to master a lot of tracks in a hurry, these will probably get the job done. I prefer something like Izotope's Ozone or Newfangled Audio's Elevate as they give you a good amount of control over things like dynamics, compression and EQ. It's all about your workflow.

Fantastic initial products, but are just releasing the same re-packaged 'artist' versions to continue to fund their faltering hardware dev for the Quad Cortex. To develop a really high quality audio processing algorithm, I think most of the effort needs to be spent on testing. You can have an idea, usually a tweak to one of the textbook algorithms that everyone (secretly) uses, and maybe it will sound good. But to know how it sounds on different kinds of audio, to get a feel for how the parameters affect the sound, that takes a long time!
    On top of that, DAW and OS compatibility testing is huge. Any DAW can easily misbehave or do something unexpected, causing a plugin to crash if it’s not paranoid about the inputs. Exhaustive testing is impossible but you have to try.
