Really appreciate you checking it out and making this video. 🐼💜
I love your compressor man. He reviewed it on release, I got a trial, bought it instantly. I use it on every vocal, the blue stripe is something else. Love it on kicks and snares too. Def gonna check out ur eq plugin.
really appreciate you guys making these plugins :)
@@cholkymilkmirage4984 Really glad to hear that and appreciate you sharing that! Thanks for your support!
@@jarosawcibora8690 We really appreciate your support!
When I was learning audio in the mid-nineties, all the engineers around me would constantly A/B whatever processor they were using. I remember it clearly. Make a change; bypass, engage, bypass, engage. Make a change; out, in, out, in. It was engrained in their muscle memory and the way they did it felt almost choreographed. If I picked up a single good habbit from them it was to use the bypass switch judiciously.
SlickEq does it all and is even faster to use + has different saturation options + if you want you can check how the curve looks
I agree with a statement you made that there are good reasons for yellow squiggly lines. I actually prefer GUIs like Fabfilter's (for example) over hardware style knobs. There's a lot of information in those lines that makes workflow easier. Yes, you should tweak with your ears, but visual aids allow you to do it much faster - and time is money. JMHO.
I Like your take on finishing mixes!!!
The Purafied guys are topnotch🫡❤️
i was lucky enough to get to beta test this thing months before it came out and it has become my main EQ. the autogain alone is worth the price of admission.... get it, youll love it. 😎👍
Hey Wietse. Any chabce you could do a vudeo on that difference in high end distortion you hear between analog and digital? Would be interesting to see some shootouts and data.
I love EQs and compressors that use step controls and or just snap to whole numbers. Makes things a lot simpler.
It makes things a lot quicker too. Try mixing an entire song with only API EQ’s. You’ll get something good much faster because the frequency decisions are much easier.
Sam is an absolute legend, makes great products and great records. Incidentally, I racked the SSL 5000 EQ modules for Sam that this plugin is modelled from, the plugin sounds very familiar to the originals.
I don't know why I watched this video when I've had this for months and use quite a bit. Very good purchase for $20 bucks.
the 2:00 thing you related is something that happens in every kind of art. We always think there's something more we could do. But is always healthier to move on to new works.
Mike Stavroe... Great Guy.. some great ideas in Mixing with your mind, He used to come my studio sometimes in Sydney... good times.
Super tips for the A/B test!
I'd appreciate a deeper musical perspective on the plugins you're evaluating. I understand that comparing equalizers, in this case, is definitely not straightforward. However, I'm interested in an EQ with 3 or 5 harmonically overlapping bands, capable of compressing these bands, introducing tube saturation, applying limiters to these bands, and offering overall oversampling. The aim is to attain a gritty dirty EQ.
If they really want people to use their ears instead of their eyes, they should get rid of the frequency markings. Just have the four knobs that say LF, LMF, HMF, and HF, but no frequency indicators. I know it's modeled on an SSL, but that doesn't mean it has to look exactly like an SSL.
There is an EQ plugin like that, it's called Blindfold EQ and it's free
I gave it a try and really enjoy it since. It also made me use other „eyes only“ EQs like SieQ again. It forces you to think what you want to achieve before drawing your usual go-to curves.
it is actually interesting why so many developpers keep coming back to this ssl form. I like what you said about ab testing, the autogain is interesting too. The whole story of visual not visual... our ears compensate just like eyes (the iris) so probably a visual feedback is always good. Personally what always works in in logic is match eq, you just let match eq listen to whatever sound then you have print of the sound and you 'reverse' it usually always gives a good result. But I never heard anyone talk about it...
Interesting video as always. I definitely have to try out that EQ'ing whilst bypassed trick now. Was wondering if you would be interested to review the Auto Align 2 Plug-In by Sound Radix. Would really like to hear your (on my behalf well regarded) opinion on that.
I would have loved it if they also did the dynamics section ie. the full SSL channel strip.
I'm just too used to having the Q section as well. I usually tweak it a bit at the end. I just have too many SSL plugins, but I gave it a demo and loved it, and wish I had this when I started out.
Mixing with your Mind did the most of any literature to push my learning forward. Steal a PDF copy somewhere on the internet
I really dig your feelings about skeuomorphism
I hope sometimes you use a dancehall or an afrobeat song please and we also know how it works on them and the dynamics of sound on the new plugins.
Is it 0 on the THD always adding distortion? You have to set it at -15 to not add any.
I've had this plugin for a while now and is one of my go to EQ's purely for its simplicity... ease of use and autogain. Mainly use it for mids/highs and the low/high pass filters. I actually use it more than any of SSL's plugins or the like. Good plugin in my opinion cause it gets the job done quickly and effectively. Though I would not recommend it to finish a session.
Not recommended to finish a session? What does that mean? Are you referring to the claim on their website? Or does it not sound good enough for the final mix?
@@janriepshoff5237 Hi. Not sure what claim you would be referring to from their website but my comment was in no way referring to any references at all. As I mentioned... It's a good plugin/tool to get certain tasks accomplished on certain tracks if needed. It's subjective I guess. There are a ton of plugins one could use but I choose Purafied for some tasks.
As for using it on final mixes... and I would assume you're referring to a master bus... I guess there's nothing stopping anyone from using it on a final mix if that's what floats their boat. Though keep in mind it's not going to make a final mix sound better or worse. It's just a tool/filter emulation of the eq section of a well known channel strip. I typically run a final mix through a hybrid setup. Channel strips were never really intended for final mixes but never say never hey! But a good sounding final mix begins from the songs foundation. EQ's... Plugins etc don't make a song sound good or better. They are just tools. And sound becomes subjective. If it's good enough for your ear then it's good enough.
@@frankymino8773 No, having it on the master was not what I mean. I was wondering what you meant by your sentence "Though I would not recommend it to finish a session.". Whether you referred to the statement at 1:32 or whether you mean something else.
@@janriepshoff5237 Oh ok... Just watched that part of the video. Nah my comment had nothing to do with it. Though I see now why you were curious and rightly so. To be honest I would think that it's a little marketing spin on their behalf. But to each is own. I guess anyone could use it how they like.
Many producers: "STOP USING YOUR EYES TO EQ"
Me: *Being visually impaired ;)
2:17 I think you should make your own slow clap memey(or memeish?) video clip which you would always play when a plugin has the auto-gain feature.
Would like to see a shoot out between this and the Kazrog EQ
I think it would be very informative if you would disclose the consumer side of the plugins you review as well. Can we buy it and have infinite installs? Do we need a subscription? Can you only use it on one system? Is there DRM?
More analog obsession plugins please 🙏
How do you find your reference songs??
There's plenty of videos on creating reference tracks, but nothing on finding reference songs.
Please do a video on how you find reference tracks for songs. Cause I'm writing a new song, but having a hard time thinking of any song that sounds similar enough to reference to.
I get a heart and no reply..lol
@@GTSongwriterhonestly its just going around spotify/youtube looking for similar genres and taking some ideas from there. Keep in mind it doesn't necessarily needs to be hyper similar to your song. References are just that: references.
So really there's not special method. Judt listen to music, save the tracks that have mix elements you love.
This plugin may be good but is it CAD$42 better than the absolute cornucopia of plugins already on the market? Plenty of which have the same or similar features? If they're leaning on the "no graphical curve display" line as their main selling point then they're really reaching.
I've not been able to finish a project for nearly a year now..
I don't like the idea of doing the bypass-a/b thing. When I mix or sound design, I have an idea of the sound I want in my head, so I am comparing my previous setting and the new setting to that. I can't see, logically, how distancing myself from that idea in my head by adding another variable like the dry signal is going to help.
funkiest version of sandstorm so far xD
The idea of auto gain for EQ is very cool, as it almost invert our usual way of using EQ:
"Boosting a frequency" becomes "Bossting a bit this frequency AND Lowering a bit everything". I want to try that!
For a further video, maybe... SNAKE OIL or worth to think about?
Ever heard of >>> "True mid/side"
Great simple but very powerful tip thank you wytse !
Mixing with your Mind is still available for $299! Wow!
@@2Sexy4MyMusic I see it all over the place at different prices.
This vs an SSL 4KB seems very similar in setup
It's a good PSA, yeah sure, be aware the mcgurk affect is a thing, but It's still exactly the same marketing idea as the (free) blindfold eq. Sure the auto gain is nice but other great blind eqs like the Tokyo Dawn Slick also have it (also free). I don't see why we need another, there's so many good free and paid blind eq choices now.
Surprised you didn't try driving the input at the very bottom!
Fixed Q though, so no clue as to whether it's actually trying to be "SSL like" or just look like one.
....for a second I thought Niet Leverbaar was the author's name and then I remembered the whole Dutch thing (and what little my German a$$ understands)

I like purafied's plugs, I loathe the preset system they have, click click click click
this one sounded too soft/ or clean too me. I missed that oomph kinda, i dunno why, ? Opposed to whitesea studio i kinda preffere the analogue emulations that are a bit harsh in the highs.. He dislikes it. Its not that im after poking out highs piercing the ears of corse, or i hope not, but i just find some of the few nice sounding analoge emulations to often have a certain hashness in the highs..
Interesting! I indeed like open and soft hi’s in my analog eq’s 😊
@@Whiteseastudio in analogue eqs i can tolerate it more than in the emulations. I think this "harsh" higs might be due to a differnt approach to imitating analogue eqs digitally ? however, im actually not aware what there are much different approaches than impulse responses/ or dynamic impulse responses.. but again, i dont like it too soft in analogue neither, im not really fan of CLA compressors neither. They are also very soft sounding, right? i am after the metallic or woody sounding distortions to a degree, not too much of corse,, in the same time, i am also very sensitive to highs funnyerwise.. but yeah.. when everything else is mixed right, and i listen on a big stereo with its fgullspectrum frewquencies, i like that highs have a certain, well metallic pierce, wich makes sound have a nice body, or lets say, the sound has a certain spiritual vibe. it really hits you then, cause highs and lows reinforce each other.. im a bssist you know, i need that tssjooong sound. Anyway, this plugin here is too soft for me.. almost felt asleep, lol
@@Whiteseastudio SSL eqs are one of the fewer where i like the smoothness of the highs .. atleast in certain circumstances, not always like said before. SSL really makes is like silky, woody, but it keeps the full colors too a degree.. Per example in your first unsuited radio-mixingconsole (forgot name) , the highs were like silky, but no woodyness, rather like woobly plasic. and the colors were like behind some transparent plastic sheet...
I just try to find words you know
You didn’t test the aliasing
My favorite EQ. Been using it for a while now. Disappointed by this review because you haven’t shown the interesting things the low and high pass does to a signal
yeah the filters are really cool :)
Digital distortion is different alright... *Clutches Culture Vulture hardware closer*
this is definitely not sandstorm by darude xD
but an intresting tune indeed!!
I honestly have trouble sometimes working out when your being serious and when your joking. Like I hope your were joking about giving it a new paint job. The only time I know for sure is the Sandstorm by Darude joke (which is getting really old now).
if it has auto gain match its automatically 5 stars
Gotta use your eyes sometimes. Like when you're dealing with frequencies that are inaudible, fixing phasing issues, or notching out a very fine band of ugly noise/mud, etc.
I do always agree with the sentiment that you should work with your ears, but I feel like people always seem to talk about this in a very black & white way. Could create a false dichotomy in the minds of newer engineers.
I guess "trust your ears, but then also use your eyes for a lot of stuff" doesn't really roll off the tongue the same way lol
Nobody who says "trust your ears" also tries to suggest that using your eyes is useless and for beginners. The whole point of that statement is to remind people that, ultimately, it's what you hear that counts, especially beginners who solely use eq curves to judge their eqing. Anyone with enough common sense will know that sometimes you need some visual feedback to work on less audible issues.
I'm trying it now and like it... it's fat!
I'm curious... You get paid to mix and master songs. Have you ever denied to mix or master a song?
Yes, I deny project on a regular basis
What are the most recent reasons?
One reason i could guess is that the audio material was recorded using a patotoe and the client is expecting the mixing and mastering engineer to make it not sound like the audio material was recorded via potatoe.
Moooohahaha I got Mixing With Your Mind on PDF suckaaas
There isn't phase invertion....its polarity reverse.... this should be changed in every console.... 😊
True!
Sonnox Eq has an ear mode, it hide numbers to help you use your ears, the interface of this EQ is Fugly….sorry
