    This video was worth it for the zebra setting tip alone! Also the memory option, why didn’t I do that before. Now have two profiles saved, one for landscape and one for wildlife 😊

      Thanks so much Tony - I appreciate it! I'm not 100% sure to be honest. I already had a bit of an audience from Instagram, but I think the main thing was the timing of my Sony a7C and Sony a7SIII videos being so close to the launch of those cameras (RUclips pushed those videos a lot more because they were "trending"). I saw one of your videos was from Margaret River - are you in WA?

    Could you recommend a lens to me?

    I’m really enjoying your videos! I’m looking to moving up from my apsc Nikon D5600. I have a question. I’m waiting for the A7iv, hoping for a better menu along with a 24mp or more along with a great high dynamic range. Do you think I am on the right path? I was disappointed when Sony came out with the A7C. I mostly take landscape photos but want the option for portraits. Thanks and keep up the good work and good luck with your channel!!

    • @andrewjclarke
      @andrewjclarke  3 года назад +1

      Thanks Joe! Yeah I actually love the a7C for the little niche it fills for me (very light, compact vlogging camera), but I completely get that it doesn't tick enough boxes for most people. So yeah I think you're on the right track. Sony doesn't usually take steps backwards, so I would fully expect the A7iv to have the new menus, 24mp and around 15 stops dynamic range. I'll definitely be doing a video on the A7iv when it does eventually come out - I hope you stick around! Thanks for the comment mate!

    Any suggestions on how to manage settings for diametrically opposed shooting scenarios such as Birding and Landscape? About 1 year ago I bought an A7R4 for landscape, A9II for BIF, then got stuck at home with Covid, so for me birding is my only option right now. Hopefully Covid will be waining soon so and I want to set up a74 for both birding and landscape but find the mode dial settings of 1,2,3 too unreliable as settings selected in the field often seem to migrate back to 1,2,3 or other permanent settings seem to disappear. Clearly I am not managing mode 1,2,3 well. I was even considering using cards to record key settings for each type of shooting them manually set them, but there has to be an easier way. Any suggestions?

    Great video and some useful menu settings and tips at the end. Interesting recommendation re sRGB vs Adobe RGB, I’ll have to experiment. Nice to see some photos of Perth , my home town at one point, though I can’t work out the location. I know South Perth but looks like a lake between you and the river and I can’t place the exact spot? Still, good to see, cheers.

    • @andrewjclarke
      @andrewjclarke  3 года назад +1

      Thanks Marcus! If you're shooting RAW the colour space option makes almost no difference, but it can be important to understand for JPEG shooters! This particular spot is a bit further east than most people venture (closer to the Heirisson Island end), that's why it flew under the radar for so long 👍 thanks for the comment!

      @@andrewjclarke Hey Andrew, quick follow up question. Do you have a preference re Exposure Mode as a start point in the memory recall? I think on one screen it was on Multi and another Centre, but don't think I heard you mention in the vid and just curious what you start point is?

    • @andrewjclarke
      @andrewjclarke  3 года назад

      @@mleesteereYou're talking about the metering mode setting right? For metering I generally leave it on multi and just use the histogram to gauge my exposure (which incidentally isn't affected by metering mode). I haven't found the different metering modes to be particularly important for my shooting when we've got access to a live exposure preview, histogram and exposure comp on a dedicated dial. But I can see what you're referring to in the video - the reason for the different settings is that I've mainly been using the a7C for vlogging so I never got around to updating that setting in the memory recall slots haha!! If I was to do it again I would put it into multi for all my saved settings :)

    I'm not a jpeg shooter except for one type of photography - infrared (on a converted camera). I use the B&W profile so that I can discern the contrast better and it helps make reviewing the images on the LCD/EVF easier on my eyes compared to the wild false colors. :p I only recently dug deeper into Sony's compressed vs uncompressed - rather unimpressed with compressed. :( Still weighing the pros and cons of compressing the uncompressed with zip file or dng file. BTW: FastRawViewer provides the ability to actually see the RAW file's histogram - it is amazing the difference there can be between the embedded jpeg and the actual raw file histogram.

    • @andrewjclarke
      @andrewjclarke  3 года назад

      Yeah I've never been a fan of the in camera compressed RAW - only really good if you're doing a massive shoot and really aren't bothered about image quality. That FastRawViewer program looks really interesting for those who want to preview the images before taking into their software - thanks for the comment!

      I'm very keen on your video idea - we could do a KOTS crossover. How about "SONY PRO CRITIQUES CANON SHOOTERS" for some inflammatory clickbait?? That comment section would be a garbage fire.

    Is there any point to the D-Range Optimizer setting? It says it tries to adjust gamma curve/exposure level/etc. when it sees backlit scenes, but can’t we just do that in Lightroom to our own taste?

    • @andrewjclarke
      @andrewjclarke  3 года назад +1

      Yeah the DRO optimizer only applies to JPEGs so if you're shooting in RAW it makes no difference. The other tricky thing with the DRO optimizer is that it heavily changes the exposure preview you get on the back screen (and the histogram) so I personally don't like having it on at all. Can be handy for JPEG only shooters though. Thanks for the comment!
