You are a life saver. I am a beginner and I switched from Fuji to Sony a7iii (strictly because I wanted to move into a full frame and also have the ability to be on crop mode). I am still struggling with learning the camera but you have been a lifesaver. So, thank you.
I don't understand how this only has 450 or so likes with 13k views.. Mark you are amazing ! Thank you for all your time and effort you put into sharing this amazing content. You are a true master and artist. I would gladly pay you to carry your gear anytime, on any adventure. I seem to never stop learning from you. Thanks Mark.
After a long period of inactivity (kids, building house etc...) Picked up photography again. My canon 50d was outdated and wanted to step into the full frame world. After some extensive research I decided to go mirrorless. I first considered even switching to Nikon. For some reason I didn't consider Sony... Maybe it's the branding that didn't appeal to me... I don't know. But boy,... I bought a a7 III second hand with 5000 clicks as well as 2 new lenses. 35 and 50 mm sigma art 1.4. The camera is amazing, with eye af etc... Your videos really are a cataclyst for me learning the song system. I'll never go back. Thank you so much Mark for the no nonsense explanation. This is really good stuff!
Amazing! Thank you, Mark, for putting all the effort into making this video. I have an a6400 and two Sony lenses (70-350 & 11mm f1.8). This is very helpful in mastering Sony Alpha cameras.
Thanks Mark I find all your content so useful, I love my A7, best purchase ever and you are helping me get the most out of it! I hope Sony gift you all the cameras and lenses you ever want!!!
I have to pick and choose carefully as I have a set equipment allowance each year. This prevents me from writing eBooks for older cameras as I cannot afford to keep one of each. The 400 and 600 primes are also out of my reach :-(
Ive had my a7iii for about a year now and never knew it had the live setting on/off toggle. This will most definitely help me out with my astro/live music work. Many thanks!

Superb video tutorial as always Mark. So detailed and informative for any Sony user or anyone who takes landscapes handheld. Good tips and tricks and logic behind each option. Only issue is..if we registered the first 3 of your setting videos into the cameras 1, 2 or 3 mode dial (Portrats, Action, tripod landscapes) we wont be able to save this new one as we only have 3 slots (on the A7xx series) and only 2 mode dial slots (on the a6xxx series) so.. hahahha oh well cant have it all. I anxiously await each and every one of your new videos as they are the best out there. SONY RULES and you rock. One of my fave RUclips teachers to say the least. Keep it up. and Happy New Year.
The A6300 has only one memory card slot, only two optional shooting modes (numbers 1 and 2) and M1,M2,M3,M4. If I save the portrait and action settings to the two available shooting modes, how do I save landscape settings, please? Can I save portrait, action and landscape settings to a memory card if there is only one slot for a single memory card? If so, how do I do it? Many thanks for your extraordinarily detailed advice.
Excellent and very informative Mark, I am switching to Sony in a few months and will be buying the A7riii and as I mainly shoot landscapes this is a fantastic tutorial, I keep hearing how Sony's menus are a nightmare but as you've explained the set up it's not too bad and I'm sure I will soon get used to it, thanks once again. :-)
Hi Mark, thanks again for this video. I wish you could give a complete tutorial on the camera settings, especially the function and short keys. Does function widow change when I change from photo to video? I like your explanation on reducing the contract. This actually does not make any changes to the raw files. I am wondering if you would change the contract of a picture profile to make changes on the raw photos? Do photographers use any picture profiles for photos, or just for video?
Picture Profiles do not change the Raw files - they are designed for Movie Capture. I have a complete tutorial for every aspect of the A7III - check out my latest movie which showcases a free eBook I have made available.
You should be able to find most of those settings on the APS-C cameras. Not sure when ISO Auto Min SS was introduced and you have to remember that the camera does not have SteadShot inside (introduced with the A6500). I would recommend using f/8 instead of f/11 as you have a one stop advantage with greater depth of field.
Hi Mark. i recently purchased the RIV. Have you done an e-book of this model? BTW love this camera and you have made using it so much easier. I have to admit I do study the settings weekly for hours so i dont miss anything there's so much to learn. Thanks so much.
Update Lightroom- the update needs to be newer than the camera otherwise you will need to use DNG converter to make the Raw files backwards compatible with older versions of Lightroom
Mark, fantastic set of videos and information, has helped me no end in understanding the A7 cameras. Just moved from Nikon to A7m3 with plans for an R 3/4. I have a question regarding what you would suggest is the best options for my genre which is steam railway photography. I use portrait for still subjects but moving subjects fall between landscape, to get crisp clear definition of the surroundings and action (some of these are moving at 75mph) for freezing steam, wheel movement etc.. I have used your Action Landscape from the image of Mt fuji on the bullet train with good results but are there any tweaks you may suggest? Many thanks Andy
I would start with my action settings and the modify/fine-tune the ISO Auto Min SS as required. The distance to your subject also has to be factored in alongside the speed of the subject. 75mpd at a great distance would not require 1/2000 second to freeze the subject. I will also slow the shutter speed down sometimes if I want to add some creative movement blur when panning.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills Do you think that lowering the saturation in the profile can affect the histgram so that the colors are not oversaturated in the Raw file?
Love the video but I have a question. I have been setting up my A7R3 with your previous settings (PAL) but now you show an additional setting for Landscape for Memory 3 (hand held). My previous Memory 3 has the Landscape settings for (Tri-pod). Surely the old one will now be over ridden. Am I missing something?
You can add additional memories to the M1 to M4 memories which are stored on a memory card. I will use slot 2 to load one of four additional memories from this card - watch my Total Recall movie to see how this is done.
At the moment I am not using a Recall Custom Hold for landscape settings. I have the Memory 3 on the Shoot Mode dial set to Hand-Held Landscape and M4 for my Tripod settings. As I generally have more time to consider appropriate settings when shooting action I just use either 3 or M4 as the starting point and then optimise the settings from there. I have Custom Hold 3 set up for Street shooting as outlined in my free eBooks (available from my website).
@@AlphaCreativeSkills So they (set up of the Fn function menu and the Custom Keys) are always the same no matter what memory setting or top dail setting (eg. A, M, P, etc) we are in. So if you have done that for action, when you move back to Porttreture, C1 wil still be on Auto Iso Min SS, right? The C buttons are always set to their latest settings and so is the Fn menu. Is this correct?
Hi Mark. This video reminded me to check my settings on compensation... my 18-105 has the distortion compensation greyed out whether I put it on my a6000 or my a6300. My other lenses don’t seem to have this issue. Is there any reason for this and are there other lenses that have this issue?

When you were talking about changing the contrast setting in Creative Styles for viewing the lcd, I saw that you had adjusted sharpness too. When is this useful for a raw shooter? Many thanks for a great movie!
The sharpness was adjusted to get a more natural view in the viewfinder. This last one is very subjective as it doesn’t affect the Raw file or the contrast of the embedded JPEG preview that the camera uses to build its histogram to show where possible overexposure is occurring.
All Mirrorless cameras are live view display by default. You can use Bright Monitoring or switch the Setting Effect to off to help in very low ambient light.
