After several years of not being able to commit to buying a camera and taking iPhone only photos, I recently got a great deal on an A7rii with 50mm lens and have been diving in head first. These videos have been the most helpful for someone who is just getting into it but isn't too dumbed down or too much time explaining stuff. Lots of great tips!!
Man we have come a long way. I'm 69 and when I first became interested in cameras I would buy the $1.00 Kodak books they would sell. The photographer would show you his picture and explain to you how it was done it was great.
Mark, I watch a lot of RUclips lol and I can see you're skilled at this. This channel will definitely blow up if you continue to make videos. Your explanations are simple and easy to understand, you're knowledgeable, your voice is soothing lol This is a successful recipe. Congrats on the 50k and all of those that follow
AMAZING VIDEO, watching after you hit 150k :) -CHECKLIST: -BEFORE SHOOTING: Visualize scene in your mind and set composition. -1: Set White balance, shoot raw to change it later. Auto WB works fine in raw. -2: Set what exposure shooting mode to use, Aperture priority, shutter priority, manual. -3: Set Aperture, ask yourself what is the nearest subject in your frame. f11-16 is usually ideal for entire frame in focus. f11 (usually) if all objects are distant. -4: Set Shutter Speed, what do you want to do with motion in scene if there is any? Freeze it or show it? Fast shutter to freeze, slow shutter to show motion. -5: Set ISO. Lowest/base ISO for less noise and grain, but raise ISO if you are unable to open aperture or slow down shutter speed since those take priority. Watch the whole video he explains it so much better! Just thought I'd write out the checklist so you all could screenshot it and refer to it while shooting!
I'm a beginner and have been learning about exposure and the exposure triangle. Through reading and watching RUclips I have a pretty good grasp of the exposure triangle. Now I've been STRUGGLING with WHERE TO START! This video helped me tremendously in giving me a starting point from which to build on. Thanks Mark, you are producing some great content!
I'm an amateur landscape photographer & have been using mainly the auto settings for yrs as the manual setting seemed too daunting & I wasn't sure what certain settings were, most info on net or reading material just seemed too technical or complicated, to me, until I stumbled onto your site, I thoroughly enjoyed this video, & understood the content! Thank you so much for giving me the knowledge & confidence to actually experiment with these settings. Thank you!!! just subbed
I have been watching so many videos and yours are definitely the best. The way you speak, your words, your explanation. Now 219K, we are far from 50k! haha well done! Congratulation, you deserve it.
Two comments from me: 1) to reduce vibrations first raise the mirror and then release the shutter (camera settings) 2) details can ALWAYS be recovered from underexposed areas, NEVER from highly overexposed areas.
Mark I am so glad I found your channel. You deserve every subscriber you get and I’m sure your channel will blow up to be massive. Thank you helping us. Your time and hard work is greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Mark, it is so awesome to learn from you. I love how you simplify everything and make it easy to understand especially for a new enthusiast like myself. Any videos on street photography and portraits?
Part of the process I also consider is "do I need one or more filters" as these also impact on the amount of light hitting the sensor and how much do I want to slow down the water with a NDF or reduce the glare with a circular polariser. As with your other video suggestions, take more shots changing composition with landscape and portrait variations and it never hurts to bracket your shots so you have all bases covered during post-production. Great advice.
I would reverse the first strategy myself. I don't even set up my tripod or get my camera out. When I'm on location, the FIRST thing I do is scout. In fact, sometimes if I can come back to a location, or I'm just scouting in general, I don't even bring a camera. I bring my phone. That way I'm not tempted to take shots and distract myself from my task at the time : scouting and figuring out the composition (if I am on location shooting, I'll wait to set up the tripod and camera and will still scout first). This tells me where to put the tripod, and then I can adjust my composition from there. Part of this is because you don't always know if the spot you chose is the best spot or not. Once you've narrowed down your shot and what you're trying to convey, THEN you set up your tripod and camera. The other thing is I try to identify different compositions before I set things up, this includes angles/perspectives in general, so I can sort of develop a "game plan" and so I can focus on the particular shot, and not be thinking about "what is the next shot". I sort of know what the shots will be at that point, and will work through them. Of course, I don't do this EVERY time, but this is my general workflow. Sometimes it's a run and gun type of situation, other times, I might have a while to spend on location. But when I'm out specifically doing landscape, this is the method that I use and it helps me focus more. I think the biggest mistake people make is either they set up their tripod first and then decide the composition. As I tell people, "The Tripod is not a compositional tool. It's a support tool." Figure out your compositions first, and then that will dictate where the tripod needs to go.
How do you chose what gear to bring with you on your hikes? Do you bring multiple lenses in fear of not getting a shot because you left the gear back home? Or do you take one lens and try to get the best of it?
WOOOOWWW!!.. I had to stop and go back to the photos you were showing at a couple seconds after the 5 minute mark. That eagle is AMAZING!!! I have a lake behind my house where we get bald eagles diving/eating all the time. I'd LOVE to get a shot like that!
All in all one has to take his time to find the best settings for his camera depending on the location and situation. Taking test shots is a must until one can figure out what are the best settings for that specific scene. Thank you very much
just ran into this video. very useful. being totally new to photography, the bit I only thought it was missing, is where to place the focus point in the image. maybe it is obvious to all, but for a beginner it would help.
New photographer here. Have an rx100 MK3 and this really helped me understand aperture priority. We are going to Skye for a week and I really want to take some landscape shots that look fabulous. Hopefully now, I can. Thankyou
I learnt more throughout you 15 minute video, than I have in 18 months. The way you explain different ideas and methods is so simple to follow...basically no waffle and bull****! I'm really looking forward to getting back out there with my camera 🙂 Thanks 😉👍😉
I am so happy I stumbled upon your video! Wish I had years ago. I've been feeling a bit out of touch with my camera and basic settings which, not only did you cover, but you put everything in SIMPLE perspective! Looking forward to watching more videos :)
This is REALLY well-deserved! :-) There is just something about you that makes you stand out from all the other channels (in a good way). It might be your friendly, calm aura or just the fact that you make me understand stuff quicker that other channels do. You just give us this "worlds best teacher"-vibe. :) Keep it going /Oscar
First off Mark its US who subscribed to your wonderful channel that should be saying a HUGE thank you to YOU for your time in making these VERY informative videos 👍 It wont be long before you have over the 100k subscribers mate 😁 As always your video was much appreciated by me 😃
Jessee Hackworth Thanks so much Jessee! Great hearing that the videos are helpful! The max I use on my Sony a7rii is ISO 3200 and that would be for astrophotography.
For the Sony A7 models; the base ISO is 100, I believe the 50 and 64 ISO are extended ISOs (that is why they have the lines around them) and the extended ISO are not as clean and have less dynamic range than the base ISO of 100. You might what to research that to verify to make sure you are getting the best possible results.
Congratulations for that subscribers milestone. I hope you will reach 100.000 as fast as possible. You deserve it. Your videos are full of useful informations. Thank you.

Congratulations Mark on reaching the 50K milestone. Celebration time for you. I just wanna say, the manner in which you presented your workflow while at the location is very systematic and very helpful. Thank you and you make excellent videos that I love watching.
Congratulations Mark! Well deserved! Really enjoy your content and the "one-take-video format" it's really refreshing and I always find the video content really informative and entertaining. I'm sure you'll pass 100k in no time
I’ve been promoting your video’s all the time when I talk about landscape photography to other people. And you deserve your +50.000 subscribers for the full 100%!! Up to 100.000 I would say🙂👍👍
I asked this exact question in one of your videos a few weeks ago and u told me u would get to it and I appreciate you doing just that great tutorial thanks
Mark ..You are an excellent teacher...whatever i was struggling to learn for a long long time ..you just solved in 15 minutes...truly incredible..Very concise...precise and to the point.I have a suggestion though..Could you please please do a video on long exposure and shutter speed to show the motion of the water...i have been struggling a long time to smoothen the water movement but with no luck.Thank you Mark.
Discovered your channel 2 days ago and I've been binge watching ever since! Finally a down to earth, clear and concise approach, filled with very pertinent examples and/or tutorials... without all the agressive hype that usually comes with it! The utter debutante that I am is already seeing a big diffence in my apprehending Lr and Ps. Your increasing success is very well deserved ! Enjoy! And THANK YOU ! Suscribed to both your channel and newsletter!! :)
Just discovered your channel. Finding it most helpful. Presentations are clear and examples are very helpful. My 9th grade grand daughter is getting into photography and this is going to help me help her. Thanks for doing this!!
Absolutely loving learning from you, Mark! You are clear, concise, patient and honest. Your integrity comes through loud and clear and I plan to view all of your videos. I'm taking notes, but would love to have a list of all you've done. I took a photography class a couple of years ago and learned a lot, though mechanics are not my specialty. It seems that all learning experiencing are finally beginning to gel, just in time, however, as I am on the brink of retirement. I have suddenly become passionate about landscape photography and took my first intentional photography journey to Glacier National Park last month and am, for the first time, very pleased with my work. Thank you for your help! Looking forward to your Wednesday video. What time?
Mark, September was worthy of celebration for me also. For my birthday I finally picked up a 16-35 G Master to top of my A7Rii. I call it my "Denny". I hope it brings me many good things!
Mark, you are great! I just found your channel a few days ago. I am shooting with the Sony a6400 and love landscape photography. That's the majority of my pictures when I travel. I sure learn a lot from you and will apply those advises, techniques that you have mention next time I travel which is 3 weeks from now.
I did use shutter priority in shooting soccer but mostly use full manual mode - it’s just easier - I have a Nikon d850. I often shoot at f16 - it dies the soften too much at f16. ISO low .....but I think there’s a balance What’s your thoughts on the hyperfocal method ....which lots of people rave about - it confused me lol. Hyperfocal is roughly 1/3 of from the bottom if you were using the screen grid. For those slow beach shots 1.3 sec is perfect .... Great videos mark
I have recently subscribed. Enjoy your clips as I find them easy simple to follow. For example I did focus stacking and it worked a treat. Some channels over complicate it. HDR next. As I'm at home laid up at the moment, this has been fun. Aslo did increase resolution ☺️
Congratulations to reach the 50K subscribers 👏🏼 I'm always happy when I see a new video from you. I mostly shoot landscape in A-mode, but this also depends (as you mentioned) if there are some dynamic elements as moving leaves. Sometimes it can be tricky if you have strong wind, the trees are shaking but you also have water in your composition and you want make a long exposure. Clouds are also a big topic and how longer exposures can change them and the look of the photo. And I mostly use ISO 100 (I own the A7R III) when I use the tripod (of course not for astrophotography) and Auto ISO for hand held photos.
Thank you Mark. You are certainly a very important person within a very small selection of talented, understandable & seriously easy to follow photographers. Thank you for your time & skills. Neville J.
Very good Mark. I have been applying my new vision of landscapes to my astro landscapes to make them more appealing. I remember just pointing the camera at an area of sky just because it was where the brighter part of the Milky Way happened to be, but the landscape would be bland. Now I make that part the sky line up with an interesting part of the landscape. I need to have a few locations in mind because certain shots can only be taken at a certain time, so I reckon I need a list for a year.
Had to add my CONGRATULATIONS MARK! you have come so far from when you started. I will continue to watch and some day will chase you down for an autograph...lol
Bit late to the party, so congratulations on nearly trebling you subscribers since making this video, myself included. Excellent advice for a beginner like myself, will try this thought process out as I have often wondered how settings are decided on. I understand the Exposure Triangle quite well but settings can be quite baffling for a beginner, this video helps enormously. For a beginner like myself would you still recommend shooting in RAW despite the fact that I’m not too interested in “post production” at the moment, just want to get competent with using my camera and sharing any reasonable images with friends on social media etc? Keep up the great work Mark, I tune in regularly and I am taking on board all the superb advice 👍
Mark. I'm fairly inexperienced but love being out shooting landscapes with my A6300. I always try put into practice what I've learned from your excellent videos. Thanks

Hope it helps! Enjoy Maui!
Clear and clean cut video .Very good job TY.
I"m watching this in 2022.
Thank you so much.
Very educational, inoformative and clearly explained.
You tell that camera who's BOSS! 💪🏻
Congratulations Mark on that magnificent milestone 50k! Thanks for this handy explanation I’m sure I’ll use it on my next foray into the landscape👍
Carl Reid Many thanks Carl - really appreciate it!
I did use shutter priority in shooting soccer but mostly use full manual mode - it’s just easier - I have a Nikon d850. I often shoot at f16 - it dies the soften too much at f16. ISO low .....but I think there’s a balance
What’s your thoughts on the hyperfocal method ....which lots of people rave about - it confused me lol.
Thanks so much Tom! I really appreciate it!
Great video man, very helpful!
Armando Uribe Great to hear Armando! Thanks man👍
Congratulations on the 50k, Mark, well deserved. Lots of great information in your videos, thanks for sharing them 👍🏻
Tim Potts My pleasure Tim! Thank YOU for watching them!
Mark, very well done video. I really enjoyed it and will be looking for your other work.
Right on! This is by far one of the best and easiest to understand settings video I've seen! Thanx man!! 👍
Vee Dubist Many thanks for the great feedback!
Thank you Mark. You are certainly a very important person within a very small selection of talented, understandable & seriously easy to follow photographers. Thank you for your time & skills. Neville J.
Neville Jones very kind of you Neville - thank yoU!
Much appreciated! Great to hear that you enjoyed the video!
Congrats, your videos are very informative.
Suki Okido Thanks so much!

Ravi Chandran Thank ya Ravi! I appreciate your positive vibes!!
Thanks
Great instructional video! Keep them coming!
Thank yoU Marilyn!
Outstanding... I thought that I hand a handle on things... but I quickly learned, how much was missing... thanks for sharing! Hgale
congrats Mark. your subs numbers are moving faster and faster. well done. 🥳🥳🥳
Thanks so much Birgit!
Mark, I am more excited about getting out and trying my best to capture beautiful images since I found your channel. I appreciate your ability to clearly demonstrate and show us how to accomplish tasks that previously I felt might have been beyond my capability. Keep them coming and I promise to keep watching.
