How to "punch in" using GarageBand iOS (Record multiple takes)
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 12 сен 2024
- "Punching in" is a way to record a part in multiple takes (sections) and can make playing tricky parts much easier by separating them in to chunks.
In this video, I show you three different ways to "punch in" using GarageBand iPhone or GarageBand iPad.

As a Dad trying to record around his daughter’s sleep schedule, GarageBand on iOS seems to be the best choice.
Your tutorials have been amazing - they have made recording so much easier. Thank you 😊
Awesome! Yes, I hear you! Spent many years hiding in a cupboard and quietly recording.
A-maz-ing punching in tips! Never dawned upon me how you can use the non-destructive editing when punching in. Each method that you shared is really helpful. Thank you Pete!🥑
Very welcome my friend. Yes, once you realise you can record over and recover sections by just trimming it’s a bit of a game changer! 👍🙏
Brilliant. A basic tenant of using Garageband that I didn't know. NON-DESTRUCTIVE EDITING! Anyone who uses GB should be subscribing and viewing your great videos.
Cheers Pete! Yes, it’s a cool concept to know which is why I decided to start banging on about it. 😊🙏
Pete Bowen : thats the great thing about the best modern IOS apps : they all use non destructive editing GB AFFINITY PHOTO LUNAFUSION etc etc - ensuring amateurs can ‘learn on the job’ without fear of failure...
Hi Pete, I love your Garage Band instructional videos. You are doing a wonderful job teaching us. I like your friendly personality. Thank You! (Ron Kert, Tampa, Florida USA)
Cheers Ron. Hope you are safe and well over there in Florida. Thanks for your kind words and support. 👍
excellent video, Pete. this is exactly what I was looking for. Garage Band has become my DAW of choice for both writing songs, and recording bass tracks for others.
Awesome! Yes, things like this work a little differently in GarageBand, it once you get used to the quirks, it is a very useful platform for sure. 👍
Thank you, thank you, thank you Pete!! I didn’t even think about the non destructive aspects. As always you ROCK!!! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
No worries Brian. Yeah, once you realise you’re never recording over anything it really helps your workflow. 👍
Pete Johns Can you please check your email?
Yep, caught up on Friday and will check again today (Monday). Been balancing creating, recovering and hanging out with the family this weekend. 👍
Awesome Pete 🎸
🙏😎
Hey Pete what's up? Thank you for this video. I really needed it. I appreciate the fact that you listened and then went into action.
No problem! I couldn’t remember who asked about this so sorry I could give any shout outs! 👍
Hello Pete... that is useful, I didn’t realise that method 2 works like that.. thanks
Glad to hear you found it useful my friend. 👍
What’s that I hear coming from the corner pub? As I get closer I see the patrons holding up their beer mugs and singing the Chorus, “What’s the matter with people today?”. Probably not your intent, but it sounds like it could be a great pub song, Pete!
Haha!!! Love it my friend.
Hey Pete! Great video and awesome song! I got a new single out and I am so glad you make these videos otherwise it would take me much longer to find this stuff out!
Awesome! Glad to hear it. Got a link to your new song?

You are a life saver Pete. Thumbs up, God bless you.
You’re very welcome my friend. I hope you get value from the other videos here on the channel and consider subscribing. 👍
Thanks Pete another excellent clear precise tutorial .
Thank you my friend. Appreciate your support. 🙏
Great stuff, Pete - and I certainly use this feature but learned an extra trick or two from this one.
Nice one! I find it useful to see other folks’ workflow so glad you learned a thing or two from mine. 👍
Excellent information as usual Pete!!! Thanks a lot!!
Very welcome my friend. Glad it helped.
I use the 2nd track method. Even in desktop DAWs with playlist features. Something in my mind can see things better as separate tracks. And then maybe comp the takes on one track. LOL.
That’s the best way
Pimp Baby la flare yep!
Agree. I tend to lay things out like that. I never use the “multi-take” features on tracks either. Get so confused by which version of which take I’m playing. Would rather have desperate tracks for each take.
Pete Johns yep!
Thanks!
You’re very welcome my friend. I hope you get value from the other videos here on the channel and consider subscribing. 👍
Im a very whiney perfectionist, I always resorted to recording riffs, solos, or whole bars of chords in one big take, I dont know why lol
Recently, I started sucking up and punching in multiple takes :)
Haha! Yeah I hear you. I don’t using punching in nearly as much as I should.
As usual Pete, great stuff. Thanks!
Cheers Tim. As usually, I really appreciate your support. You must be one of the longest serving commenters here in the channel?

Can you do a tutorial on how to do layers like on you did on here?
Hey there. There are a few videos in the channel. Maybe dig through this playlist -

@@PeteJohnsMusic ok thanks
Thanks Bro! very helpful. Do u have any videos about how to do gain staging with the Zoom L-8 in GarageBand? I want to know what I'm aiming for gain/volume wise to get a good recording to send to my engineer. thanx.
Hey there. I haven’t used the Zoom to record in GarageBand iOS yet to be honest. I use it with my PC but only for live streaming, and found that the gain is usually around the 12 o’clock position to get my faders at 0 and have a nice signal. But it’s definitely a matter of trial and error depending on the mic or device you are recording.
It’d be great if it were possible to add rotation/wah/vibrato in editing!
Right!? We can edit the sustain track but would be great to record a second take with just rotation, effects etc.
Any ideos for composers block ? I have a great beginning, but im stuck. Lol
Put down any idea you have, later on you may find something you’d put down doesn’t fit the song & you’ll most likely end up editing it, it’s ä byootiful world editing.
👍😎
I'm having a hard time trying to line them up with the second method
Hey there. It can be a little fiddly for sure. Make sure your cuts are right on a bar marker so you can line them up more easily.
Hey Pete. Can you review the distribution company LANDR? I’ve been using LANDR to distribute my music, and it’s all online, and no app.
Hey there. I wasn’t aware that LANDR do the actual distribution? They are a mastering platform which I’ve tried before. Check out the video here - ruclips.net/video/ka3ucx_PrDw/видео.html
How are you bringing up the window with the gain slider you're using to turn down the new vocals, eg on-screen at 5'10"?
If I ever apply automation to a track, which means that the vol slider in the left-hand pane is greyed out/non-functioning, I'm stuck with re-entering and using automation to tweak overall volumes. Is this a way of changing the overall level of a track that has automation?! That would be a game-changer for me...
Thanks so much for all these videos - they are incredibly useful.
Hey there my friend. This video should show you how to managed all the volume changes you need in your songs. ruclips.net/video/VkSU8BoMsz4/видео.html
@@PeteJohnsMusic Thanks :-) I forgot about that FX hack for adjusting master volume too; I'll have to use that on this project I've been butchering.
what if you wanna keep punching for a whole 16 bars...when I tried this my recordings Keating getting deleted
Maybe set up on multiple tracks? I would ask over at the GarageBand Users Facebook group if you need more specific help.
In the first half of the video, where you're explaining vocal punch-in, the top 2 tracks appear to be on mute (bright blue color and X'd out). So we just ignore those tracks, right?
For the method where you're punching in 2 bars before the target area, I guess the drawback is that you're effectively muting those 2 bars, as well. To me that's not quite a true punch in because you're missing part of the performance leading up to the target area.
Yeah, I talked about my approach a little on today’s Creator Town Hall. ruclips.net/video/jE8NDyGYptI/видео.html
is it possible to punch in and out on the same track using an auto punch footswitch? How about auto arming the same track for a specific time? Thanks in advance T
Hey there. GarageBand iOS really doesn’t have support for this sort of stuff.
@@PeteJohnsMusic thanks Pete
Can you program a footswitch to punch-in recordings in Garageband as you used to do with older analog recording equipment?
Hey there. Unfortunately GarageBand iOS doesn’t have the ability to do this.
Hi Pete, I haven’t tried the nondestructive alterations with a guitar. As I have said before when I cut and paste you sometimes get a click, it drives me mad. I will give it a try in the morning and see if this works. Thanks again.
It’s a great way to approach it as you can have audio before and after and find a nice spot where the volume is low to split. Still not perfect for a resonant instrument like guitar. Perhaps I’ll show a cross-fade technique using two tracks and automation for guitar at some stage.
Pete Johns thanks again Pete. I’ll let you know the outcome when I have experimented a few times
Pete Johns That would be mucho helpful!
Hi Pete, I have put a video onto the FB Page where I have recorded, Cut and Past, Punch In and finally used Automation. I don’t understand why in certain sections there is no click. Automation appears to be the best solution to resolve the issue but it’s frustrating. I’ve asked, in the video, if anyone else has any suggestions. Cheers mate.
Every time I am recording vocals and I want to punch in my vocals always sound louder or lower then the other part.
And I don’t like how it sounds is there a way to fix that?
It really comes down to making sure you are using the same settings on the track and trying to keep your distance from the mic consistent.
@@PeteJohnsMusic oh ok thanks
How far away from the mic do you have to be for it to sound good
1 and 2 seem good, but it doesn't work if you're working off a single track like VO
Yeah right.
Hey there! Is there. Place where this track is streaming?
Hi there Tom. At the moment it is only on RUclips - ruclips.net/video/QUegjkLmeDk/видео.html, and you can hear the original demo on Soundcloud - soundcloud.com/petejohns/were-trying-to-have-a-society-here

Hey there. Yep, try this plugin. It’s not perfect but works pretty well. ruclips.net/video/SVdg4bY7Tgg/видео.html

Thanks. Wait… 😄

pete should learn how to teach? this is so chaotic what is he doing? apart from talking very fast and a lot! Sorry but not helpfull at all. again learn how to explain simple
Sorry that my delivery doesn’t align with your preferred learning style. I appreciate that everyone learns in a different way and not everyone will align with how I teach. Always working to improve but completely understand that it won’t be for everyone every time.
