Pete, this was incredibly helpful. I have been watching a lot of your videos, and I find them all extremely well done and extremely helpful. I don’t know if you’re making any money by doing these, but you sure are helping me out a tremendous amount. Thank you for taking the time to put something together that’s so professional and easy to follow. If I could ever help you in anyway, please let me know.
Thanks Jimmy. Appreciate it my friend. I do make some revenue from advertising and also have a Patreon page where folks can support me. Patreon.com/petejohns.
hey pete, great video. it’s possible you’ve already mentioned this, but on ipad at least, if you swipe down on the timeline while recording, i think you’re able to see the track.
Yes! I believe this is a feature on some iPads but I always forget about it. I will have to try it on my current iPads and see if it still works on the smaller ones.
that doesn’t work for me - but you can swipe down before recording and see the track view for that one track - and when plying back, but it disappears when you press record - it’s such a weird thing that track view is not an option when recording!
Ridiculous that you can’t record seeing the tracks without a workaround!!! Crazy oversight, and means you can’t do this ‘hack’ when using the internal mic just to sketch ideas, but I can’t see when the guitar track starts etc!!!
Thanks for sending me over to this video Pete! I didn’t even realize your screen wasn’t switching over to the other screen on that other video. I did notice the tracks were red which I didn’t ever recall seeing before. This is super useful. I always get annoyed at the screen switching over. Very awesome!
Darned clever and helpful workaround for Apple silliness! I was also glad that my 2 channel Focusrite was good enough on it's own. Thanks so much! We love you, Pete! :-)
Hi Pete ! Coming back on your ingenious workaround, I wish to let you know it also works if you don't have a 2 track audio interface: I have plugged a simple external USB mic and the trick with the dummy track 2 works as well ! Thanks for your continuous tips & tricks on GB iOS :)
Thank you Pete... I’ll look into that. Seems unfair that we must buy more gear to get around something that used to be a part. Dude, give them a call and tell them to change it back. I know you know people!!!🍻✊🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Haha! So I think you can set it to multi track audio in the settings and use it with a single channel recording on two tracks. I’ll give it another look and see if I can solve it.
Pete Johns ..i anticipated success as i have a two channel Yamaha Audiogram 3 USB interface, but i got a weird result; i opened the 'dummy' track using the guitar / bass option, nothing plugged in and all turned right down. With '2' selected of course. Then with '1' selected for the microphone track i tried recording, and i could see equal signals recording on both tracks. On soloing each track, they were the same, but the dummy track had one of the distortion options. Furthermore, when i deleted the dummy recording, it took the mic track with it. I'm not worried, as the interface is outdated now, but just mystified, a state that i am quite familiar with..hh...i'll try again with a clear head tomorrow, or order the Beringer of course. many thanks j
Hey Pete, do you remember that GB hack on recording IAA. It was when it won’t start recording into GB until you press the key in IAA. I use to do it, but it’s been awhile that I forgot and can’t remember or figure out how it was done. I can’t find the video explaining
I don’t recall sorry? Maybe ask over at the Create Record Release Facebook group at createrecordreleaae.com, or the Discord group here - studiolivetoday.com/discord.
If You can’t afford or get your hands on a usb midi device, then you can do this same trick with an inter app audio app, i use AUM, it works flawlessly, I tested it while I was watching this video :)
Is there any way to do this with a midi track. When using a midi keyboard with software instruments, I have no need for the software keyboard onscreen; it would be much more useful to be able to see track view.
Here's the song I was working on and needed the help with. I've learned pretty much everything I know about GB from you. Still a noob, but I'm getting there. Anyway, if be interested to hear what you think and am open to any pointers ruclips.net/video/wmWFURxf75w/видео.html
Thanks Pete, your videos are really helpful- but I'm struggling to figure out how to monitor a software instrument while staying in track view.I can only hear the instrument while on the instrument GUI. Appreciate any help!!
I had to get a new iPad Pro because my iPad Aire is too old to run GB. I’m having trouble figuring out a few changes. It looks like it now doesn’t cover all the tracks when going into record mode. Also, not getting warnings about latency when I have bluetooth headphones on.
Oh really? That’s odd. I still get all that with the newer iPad. Maybe ask over at the Create Record Release Facebook group at createrecordreleaae.com, or the Discord group here - studiolivetoday.com/discord.
I guess I am still getting a warning about bluetooth, but it’s nice that I can now see a few tracks above my recording track. Is it because my new iPad is one of those gigantic 12.5 inch screens? I don’t think I can add a screen shot here.
But I don’t have a record and mute button on each of my tracks. I just have a little speaker and a little head phone icon on each track. I think they are called mute and solo. How did you get that wider track header?
Pete Johns Wow, I got this to work with my old Lexicon audio interface, but only with an xlr cable into the interface’s mic 1 plug. Couldn’t get anything though the 1/8 inch stereo line in plugs. But I have an xlr cable that will plug into my AKC SR45 wireless mic base.
When using a usb hub, is it not possible to use a standard charging cable (usb to lightning) to go between the hub and the iPad? Or have apple blocked that aha
please tell me that there is another way. I don‘t have a soundcard with 2 inputs, I want to record multiple tracks just via the ipad‘s microphone. And I want to see the tracks while I am recording a new one - I am already super frustrated
Unfortunately not. You can upgrade to Logic Pro if this is really important to you. I have a heap of videos on Logic Pro for iPad here. ruclips.net/p/PLc8Xg_23Wa55Eoyv7FZFhX9URoXxbC3l9&si=SjuyBnpTppW5s5Ie

Definitely! I use this all the time now. So much easier for guitar and vocals especially.

Pete Johns I definitely do and I already subscribed brother thanks.
Seems like just adding a display option would be an easy solution.
You’re right. This could be a simple slider “track/instrument” view.
And clearly it’s possible since it can be done with the two tracks.
Pete Johns Exactly. Such a great resource your material continues to be by the way.

I plugged my Behringer Xenyx 302 mixer into the phone and it worked to my amazement! Is Apple dropping their guard?
Haha! Behringer are actually really good at making sure their products are class compliant, so you can thank them, not so much Apple. 😄

Seems like it should be a view preference in GB. Thus the limitations in that daw. Would like to keep sight of the wav form for visual cues..

When using a usb hub, is it not possible to use a standard charging cable (usb to lightning) to go between the hub and the iPad? Or have apple blocked that aha
Depending on the hub, you usually can run a second USB cable to the lightning power port on the Lightning to USB 3 cable and power using this.
I’ll just use logic pro on my macbook pro. What a dumb design. Thanks man, this was infuriating me and I couldn’t find anything from searching it.

Seriously... why haven't they just made it possible to do this in the interface?
I have no idea. Would be a simple fix you’d assume?
absolutely - can’t we email apple and ask them - it’s a crazy decision
That is so stupid that you need to buy something completely separate two do such a normal function LOL
It would be great if you could do it without an interface, but once you start recording vocals it guitar you probably want an interface anyway.
and that you have to dummy record a 2nd track even when you dont want to
I use only one interface and arm 2 tracks on separate channels. No need for the extra hardware.
The fact that you need an interface to see track view is so dumb, jeez
Little bit. Try Logic Pro for iPad if you want something better. logicipad.com/
ipad with garageband $400+, extra gear to make it useful $1000 lol does apple own the gear makers
