Please help, i have a scarlett 2i2 and apple lightning to USB 3 adapter connected to a powerbrick and the iPad (5th generation, iOS 13.2.3 ) still says “Cannot use accessory: Scarlett 2i2 USB: this accessory requires too much power”. The setup works on my iPhone 7 iOS 13.2.3 so i know that i am not doing anything wrong. I just want to use the iPad cause it has a larger screen. Thank you so much.
Hey there. I would highly recommend a powered USB hub in this situation as it will provide much more reliable power and work with any iOS device, as it won’t drain any of the power from your iPhone or iPad.
SOLVED: Just use a powerbrick strong enough to power the iPad such as the iPad’s original powerbrick. (When I had the problem, turns out I was still using the iPhone’s powerbrick for the iPad, my bad)
couldnt have said it better, thanks Pete!
I just received this exact same USB hub and it works great!!! I had an old M-Audio interface laying around that didn’t work with my MacBook anymore and I couldn’t believe it works with the iPad!!! It’ll be great to go out and record mobile wherever inspiration comes to me, thank you for this tutorial.
Awesome! That’s great news Bob. Thanks for taking the time to let me know.

Hi pete.. the tendak USB 3.0 is now not available in amazon.. the link is not working.. any other suggestions?
Pete Johns I bought all the products suggested in this video and am using a focusrite Scarlett 18i8. The first time I plugged everything in it worked, but after I turned everything off and plugged in the mics, the iPad stopped recognizing the interface. I can’t get it to bring up that message that says “audio device connected”
Somebody tell me what microphones work with these interfaces
SAME HERE! great video Pete. Subbed!
I was having problems with my UR22-C and iPad and i remembered that you had a video. You are the best teacher on the web. You explain everything and yes i take your advice on gear.

Great job on an otherwise baffling subject (at least for me). I've recently retired and am called to try and compose some songs with my acoustic guitar. Had no idea how to hook up an interface and all of that stuff. I have an iPhone 8 plus and a recently purchased iPad pro. On top of all that I've been binge watching your channel to try and get up to speed with GarageBand IOS (you do a really good job with your tutorials). Hi Pete. Great video. A good audio interface to consider if you want to avoid the lightning connection issues is the Focusrite iTrack Solo. It comes with a lightning cable, so you can just plug and play. I picked mine up 2nd hand, boxed and barely used for about the same price as the usb to lightning adapter you’re using in the vid.
It doesn’t draw power from the iPad, so you do need to connect it to a usb power source.
Nice one! Thanks for the recommendation. I have seen the iTrack Solo around the place and often wondered if it was a good option since it supports iOS out of the box. So it has two separate connections, one for power and one for data?
@@PeteJohnsMusic Yes. It has a usb power supply which I just plug in to an Apple charger. The Lightning cable has a proprietary connector to the device which probably won’t work with anything else.
The interface can apparently work with Mac or PC if you download the appropriate driver, although I’ve never tried it. Other than that, it’s pretty standard. Two inputs with separate gain stages (mic and jack), phantom power, direct headphone monitor and two line outs for monitors.
I’ve never used anything else, so I don’t know how it compares to other devices, but it’s working fine for me.
Beautiful! Thanks for the extra info. Looks like a really solid option for those wanting an "out of the box" solution but wanting something more solid than the iRig range.
I would love to see a comparison between the iTrack Solo and the Scarlet Solo as those are the two I’ve narrowed my search to. I asked a RUclips reviewer if the iTrack and she said Scarlet will produce a bit better sound.
@@PeteJake100 I’m not sure anyone could say that unequivocally unless they had tried both or studied the components list. For me, the iTrack Solo was an easy choice because I didn’t need an extra camera kit to get connected. I tend to think along the lines of the fewer additional connections in the signal path the better.
Thank you! Brilliant information for mobile and iPad creators💙
You’re very welcome my friend. I hope you get value from the other videos here on the channel and consider subscribing. 👍
Wow...I wish I would have discovered this video a couple years ago! this setup would be perfect for what I am trying to accomplish. Great content. Killer vid. THANKS.

Hi!
I have a new iPad7 purchased a month ago, on which I use GarageBand connecting my electric guitar to a
Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 3rd gen. audio interface, and this one to the iPad. I can hear myself while playing and/or
recording if I use my headphones on the interface or/on the iPad. But I can't hear my guitar without
headphones, as the iPad's internal speakers stop working. Even if I activate the “monitor” icon in GarageBand,
the iPad doesn't sound. I have tried the two solutions that Apple offers on its website, in the troubleshooting
section, in the section "GarageBand for IOS: Audio is not heard when monitoring an external device" I have
tried both solutions and the problem remains unsolved.
Thanks beforehand
Hey there my friend. So, in my experience once you plug in an audio interface this replaces the audio input and output, so I don’t believe there is a way to do this?
Hey on garage band, I can select input 2 with ease, but when wanting to play guitar while recording on the camera it only receives audio in one ear and I cant find a setting on the camera app as well as TikTok any suggestions?
Yup. You’ll need to either use the app which came with your interface to make the audio mono, or fix this in editing using something like LumaFusion.
Thank you for this great video. I had so many questions in getting an audio interface for my iPad. Trouble finding answers online. This video gave me everything I needed to know and more.
Awesome! Really glad to hear my friend. I hope you get value from the other videos on the channel and consider subscribing if you haven’t already. 👍
Pete Johns always makes it easy with full explanation.
Thanks Rickey! Appreciate the kind words.
Quick question: what’s the difference in quality between using any of these interfaces vs using the iRig? Are interfaces a better translation of the sound than the iRig?
Hey there. So the iRig is pretty good these days. Probably not quite up to the quality of a dedicated USB interface. The difference is usually the quality of the preamp (less noise) and the converters (again, cleaner conversion).
So when I plug the interface into the iPad I dont get a message on the iPad acknowledging audio device

Hi Pete, very explanatory content again, thx. One question here: how do you cope with recording latency to the GB click?
Hey there. I haven’t experienced a whole lot of latency with this setup. I find it quite low.
@@PeteJohnsMusic are all 3 devices the same regarding latency? Cheers
Hey Pete, loving the content on this channel, thanks! I’m considering between getting the 2020 base model vs 2020 iPad Air. Regarding the lightning connection situation on base model, is the only drawback just the inconvenience of having to use the additional lightning to usb converter? or does it have any other effects on playback sound quality or production performance in general, compared to having a direct usb c connection on the iPad?
Great question my friend. In my experience the only real difference is that you definitely need a genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter as opposed to USB-C where you can use pretty much any generic adapters. Once you have the connections converted to USB-A there is no difference in the reliability of the connection or quality of sound through any devices. Hope this helps your decision. studiolivetoday.com/ipad
@@PeteJohnsMusic ok great, I think I’m gonna go with the base model 8th gen as I’m a noob still. All best, Jon

Ipad Air 2
Scarlett 2i2
Powered USB hub
Genuine Apple Camera Adapter
Many thanks, John
Awesome! Great to hear John. 🙏
I have a mixer with interface and I will like to connect my iPad to the mixer to manage video calls. I tried with that setup but didn't work. Any suggestions?
Hi there. You will need to make sure your interface/mixer is class compliant and you have the genuine Apple Lightning to USB adapter. It can also be difficult to record calls and get just one copy of both sides of the conversation. This is called a “mix minus” if you want t research it more.
Very good 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Hey so I did everything you recommended using the Focusrite interface but now for some reason when I play my tracks - the beats I’ll be singing to - they sound all distorted. Usually I play them in the background from my iTunes and I also tried importing them to see if that would fix the issue but they sound terrible. When I disconnect everything they sound normal again so I know it’s not the tracks themselves. Any suggestions?? 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Howdy. I’ve replied to this on your other comment asking for a little more information. Where are the sounds you are importing being sourced from? And if you import them and play back are they still sounding distorted by themselves?
I had a question about this, and knew this was the place to find the answer! Thanks Pete!
Glad it helped David. 👍

in my country there’s no any usb hub that requires power to the wall. is that going to work with my ipad?
It may not provide enough power to run your devices if it is not an A/C powered hub.
Does connecting a usb interface to the iphone/ipad, affect its battery life as in long term? Bcz i was totally suspecting that could happen and i went for an interface that could run on battery power too without drawing any energy from the mobile device. Nonetheless i love using these interfaces with my ipad!
Hey there. So yes, interfaces that are designed to use the iPad or iPhone power (like the iRig series) will drain the battery a lot more, and therefore impact short and long term battery life.
Using a powered hub or portable battery instead means the iPad/iPhone only needs to power itself which helps the battery life.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. 👍

Hello , generally the interfaces don’t have an usb in , what I want to say is , I have a blue yeti microphone the cable has an usb plug , I can connect it into my iPhone without use any interface or the power usb , just using the small white hub that you have , works fine , but I would like better quality, so I have been informed that I need an interface , but how to connect my mic on it ? Thank you
Hi there. You either need to connect a USB mic or an interface and use a standard XLR mic. Unfortunately there is no way to use both in iOS.
Hey Pete, what mic would you recommend to use with an iPad Pro?
Hey there. If you’re looking for a USB mic specifically there are a lot of quality choices. I like the Samson Meteor for a balance of performance and price. Check out this video where I go through my recommendations - ruclips.net/video/sDjr1G0uqRc/видео.html

I have an old version Presonus AudioBox I use. I've never had to use a powered usb hub to power the interface...it's powered on when I provide AC power from the wall, via lightning cable, to the usb 3 camera adapter that's plugged into the ipad...does this not work for the interfaces you've shown here?
Most smaller USB audio interfaces don’t have a separate power socket for A/C power. They are “bus powered” so get both their power and data via USB. You’re correct that if an interface or mixer is separately powered it doesn’t need additional power like this. Probably something I should have mentioned!
Pete Johns my description is a little confusing after I reread it..I'm saying I don't have separate power for the audio interface. I just use the usb camera adapter like the one you show, (I have a cheap version) plugged into the ipad, and plug the interface into it using usb cable, and once I plug a regular lighting cable powered from the wall into the lightning port on the adapter, the interface and my Samson Mic light up and have power.. I was going to buy a powered usb hub but mine works the way I mentioned...am I missing something? I'm not saying you are wrong but wondering why you need a powered usb hub if you are bringing power in to the adapter?
Got it! Yes, there are some interfaces that will work with just the additional power being supplied to the iPad or iPhone via the lightning power input.
Another thing I may need to cover in a “part 2”. 👍
It’s always more reliable to use a hub or Powerbank though, as there’s no guarantee which interface will work with which iPad/iPhone.
How come I cannot hear the audio when it’s plugged in?
Might need to monitor the audio either through your interface or your software.
this is SO helpful thank you!!!

My Scarlett 2i2 don’t work on my iPad or my iPhone 11 it makes this noise like a heartbeat and the light flashes where it says 48V And when I turn it off and still makes the same noise but lower
Sounds like a power issue? Are you using a powered USB hub? This video might help - ruclips.net/video/gwNqV1W3fPU/видео.html
@@PeteJohnsMusic I am using the power connector on the iPad power cord and plug
@@BadKarma714 did u fix it? I got the same issue
You guys need a POWERED usb hub - it should be self powered.
Just started using Scarlett 2i4 yesterday and ran into a similar issue. The order in which you hook up the Scarlett is important. Make sure nothing is plugged into the Scarlett or iPhone. First plug in the iPhone/iPad camera adapter 3 into device and make sure power is connected to it. Then connect the Scarlett to the camera adapter USB port. Make sure phantom power is not on when you connect or you will get a not enough power message. Once connected and powered you can then connect your inputs and use phantom power if needed. These steps need to repeated any time the Scarlett or iPhone/iPad is disconnected. Also, in my case no matter what order I tried (and I’m ocd when it comes to troubleshooting) the Scarlett would not power up properly when connected to a powered usb hub. I’m using a usb 2 Scarlett btw. I’ve read that the 3rd generation may not have drivers installed on the device as 1st and 2nd gen do as well just fyi.
Does using the iPad lower the recording quality vs using the preamp through a laptop?
Hey there. Not in my experience. It records at 24-bit, 44.1kHz quality with about the same latency as a PC/Mac. All modern (last 5 years) iPad and iPhones have enough processing and memory to handle high resolution audio without any problems at all.
@@PeteJohnsMusic Awesome! Thanks man

Why you don’t test it for iphone users to so that we will know it would pop up on the screen to steady just doing it for the ipad🤔
You don’t need a hub. You can just use your charger that comes with your iPad. If you’re recording acoustic guitars with CONDENDER mics the FOCUSRITE has 48 volt phantom power. Your acoustic guitar ,and vocals will sound ten times better using a condenser mics. Why does EVERYONE say to use a hub. Use your regular iPad charger.
Hey there. It depends on the audio interface generally. Some will work fine with just the charger plugged in however some tend to use an inconsistent amount of power and need the powered hub. If you have an interface that gets enough power form the genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter then you’re good to go. But folks who get the “this device uses too much power” message will need to simply add a hub to their setup. studiolivetoday.com/usb
You should thank him for his detailed answer to your question.
@@PeteJohnsMusicI just tried to do lightning straight into the adapter + a behringer um2 into the adapter via usb. Doesn’t power the interface. So I’m guessing you are correct and I would need a hub for the power
@@PeteJohnsMusic what if the 3.0 hub you recommended was working but now it’s not? Just barely started saying that i need more power even with the hub.

Hi Pete! Thank you!!! Problem solved! Got high quality STEREO audio from my djm mixer in recording video finally. Seems like Moviepro the only video recording app with stereo sound via external usb interface features I found so far. Best!
Awesome!! Very good to hear my friend and I’ll have to keep that in mind for future videos as I get asked about this quite a lot.
Great video for recording only vocals.
Now I'm strugling with record voice+piano at the same time (Focusrite, vocals on channel 1, piano on channel 2). It's only recording voice on Left and piano on Right.
Hey there. Yes, if you record the audio to GarageBand you can choose to record each channel as a mono channel. THe camera app will capture stereo and pan one left and one right. You can use something like LumaFusion to edit the audio or a video, or use a different video app. In short, two channel interfaces are basically just a stereo interface. studiolivetoday.com/usb
