    Wow! That is bloody impressive! There hasn't been a lower end phone or tablet with hdmi support for ages, in fact, I've had issues even with older devices with mhl supported. This probably isn't a game changer, but for the power users from poorer countries who wanted this for years, you've hit the nail on the head with this video!

      I remember using MHL on my Nexus 5 and it was pretty alright, but things got messy when you tried to change resolutions. Not only that, but you needed to have a powerful enough 5V source to prevent your battery from depleting while plugged in.

      USB--C as a port is fairly expensive to make, and not every company complies to all of the USB-C standards or makes modifications of it in terms of how it interacts with devices.

    • @clebbington
      @clebbington 3 года назад +8

      I kind of makes sense when you think about the BOM for these inexpensive handsets - USB-C 2.0 can support data transfer and decent charging rates while being priced cheaper than a full USB-C implementation. It's not just about the physical port, either - the USB controller circuitry is also more expensive for true USB-C.

      The whole "USB-C 2.0 can't support video out is because it's not 3" is BS. I remember a time when many micro USB 2. phones supported video out through MHL. And MHL Alt Mode for USB Type-C does supoort USB2.0. Companies just refuse to put it so if you want that feature you have to buy their flagships.
      Kinda like how Samsung won't put DeX mode on their lower end Galaxy S Tabs like the 6 Lite or 5e. Even though we know they do have the power to run on DeX. Might not be able to multi task as well as the high end. But the layout change alone would help. Many Android apps aren't really good for tablets, so running it on a window inside might be better. Even if they limit the number of apps running simultaneously. Like only 2, like pretty much any phone on split screen mode.

    A trick I use to add power is connecting an unpowered USB C hub then plugging a charger into one one of the USB ports. While I use a hub designed for MHL phones it works without its own HDMI out on non-MHL phones (my backup phone is non-MHL). That give USB storage and a place to connect wireless keyboard and mouse adapters like Logitech while leaving Bluetooth connections free. With a bit of thought you can make a surprisingly useful mobile desktop from a phone.

    These were around for micro SD years ago. I have one that I used with my Galaxy Note. II. It is much less complicated. It is basically a multi-function hub with HDMI, micro SD & full SD card slots, a full size USB port and a micro USB port for charging. It didn't need any apps. You just attached it to an HDMI port but I don't think that it worked with all Android phones. It needed a protocol that only the higher end phones like Samsung had. I used it at home and took it to friend's houses to watch movies. That was long before smart TVs, Chromecast and before Android boxes were cheap and easy to get. I didn't play games with it but it worked very well for movies. I just pulled it out. Now I have to see what I can still use it for, maybe with a USB C converter.

It is important that one of the devices is connected via cable. Then depending on the distance to the router your minimal one way lag is 2-4ms and two way will be double that. Cable is pretty fast so you will also get the awesome experience. Also the TV monitor hardware is important. If you are pushing higher resolution the CPU needs to be stronger.

      Netflix would work if the device has Widevine L3 instead of L1.
      But it would be limited to SD Quality.
      For Netflix HD Widevine L1 is a must have and that's were get a black screen because of DRM protection (L1). unless the whole thing can do proper HDCP over HDMI.
      I was wondering about the same thing.
      So i asked ETA Prime 2 questions here in the comment section. Let's see if he will read it and also has the time to check if any of those devices (that he tested) has Widevine L1 🤓

      I was researching that before looking to get a S6 lite, but it seems like Samsung dropped the DEX except S6 and above, or if you can find S5e, that would work but S5e is priced between S6 and S6 Lite and its benchmark just barely above S6 Lite. I checked iPlay 40 and it supports MHL. So anything that says it support MHL will work, but not S6 lite.
