  • The Mysterious Noble Mistress Of Henry VIII - Anne Stafford, Countess of Huntingdon
During the reign of King Henry VIII, the Tudor Monarch was known for having a number of different mistresses. Henry’s reputation for relationship have led to him having 6 wives, and two of these he had executed inside the Tower of London’s walls. The King its known did have a wandering eye, and often this wandered to the ladies in waiting of those women he was in fact married to. With Anne Boleyn’s downfall, the King’s eye had shifted towards Jane Seymour and he hoped she could provide him with the male heir that Anne could not. Interestingly Henry even had a number of illegitimate children, with one Henry Fitzroy even being considered as his successor. Fitzroy’s mother Bessie Blount was a lady in waiting to Queen Catherine of Aragon. However she later gave birth to Henry Fitzroy, and Henry even considered marrying his illegitimate son to his own daughter Mary I to solidify his claim to the throne.
The thing with Henry VIII is that for many women at court, when the King wished for them to become their mistress, very few refused. Anne Boleyn was one of the very few who resisted and insisted that the King should make her his Queen before they got intimate. Many women at court saw it as their duty to become the King’s mistress, as it was deemed to help their families status out, and they wished to get grants of land and other benefits. One Lady who’s surrounded in scandal, especially with regards to her conduct with the King was Anne Stafford, the Countess of Huntingdon.

Anne and Henry finally had sex after they visited King Francis in Calais in 1532 and felt safe enough to take their relationship to the next level. They married once it was clear she was pregnant so that their child, which they both hoped would be a boy, would be legitimate. And the rest so they say, is history.

And how was Henry sleeping with Anne HER fault?! He was the king! He literally screwed whatever woman he wanted and being basically chattel, it not like they could just say no. Not that Henry took responsibility for really anything he ever did. I mean, he was willing to go along with the nonsense of his wife having slept with her own brother. Sounds like projecting to me.

Also, there were no "mysogenists" just as there were no "feminists". Neither concept nor related movements existed. Henry 8th loved the company of women but that didn't mean he bedded every woman he had in his company. It was perfectly acceptable for a man/King to take a mistress when his wife was pregnant as it was considered unwise for a husband and wife to have sex when she was pregnant. Henry 8th had very few mistresses and generally speaking once the King had, had his way with her they were paid off, possibly married off as well and sent from court. Bessie Blount was perhaps the only women to have benefitted from being Henry 8th's mistress, although had she had daughter she would have just been cast off women with a bastard child. Mary Boleyn only has notority because her sister Anne became Queen and changed the world.
Bessie's son proved to Henry that he was capable of having sons and even after Fitzroy's death in 1536, Henry toasted Bessie by saying "God bless Ye Bessie"
Another point is that Bessie became Henry's known mistress in 1518/19 so any light of love affair Henry had during the time before Bessie has been kept very much in the dark so to speak.
Another lady who Henry enjoyed the company of later on in his reign was Anne Bassett a very good looking lady but I don't think Henry was interested in her sexually, he enjoyed having beautiful things and beautiful people around him. Katherine Howard was after all a trophy wife and yes perhaps a last desperate attempt to father a spare and another one just to be the times the charm bit.
Katherine didn't like Henry's amours, but looked away just as any other queen had done.
Accept from Katherine sister Juana, who attacted one of her husbands mistresses with a pair of scissors and the poor mistress had her hair chopped off. The poor mistress was soon sent from court or married off since Philip lost interest in her after Juana's brutal haircut.

That is only one theory that Henry Stafford is responsible for the princes’ murders and it is a very shaky one at best (even if that’s how “The White Queen” portrayed it).
I know it is popular to exonerate King Edward ever since his skeleton was discovered, but if one looks at all the evidence, Edward is still the most likely choice. He is the one who had Edward V’s uncle, half brother and one of his own guards arrested and executed for accompanying him to the designated meeting place.
The fact that they did not meet there and took him onto Staffordshire, Buckingham, suggests Elizabeth Woodville did not trust Richard to do the right thing. It’s interesting that they took them to Henry Stratford’s hometown where he and his wife, who was the sister of Elizabeth Woodville, lived when not at court. It was Henry who turned on Richard so suddenly after he had not seen the boys in quite some time. Within a few months, he was executed.
Anyhow, he was not considered “the most likely.” There was an obscure Portuguese writing but there are tons of other possibilities that are as or more plausible.
Anyhow, just wanted to say that only a few individuals strongly believe Henry Stafford had something to do with the supposed murders. There are other theories that they even survived or that Edward the fifth died from some ailment (as a doctor was regularly seeing him) and his brother escaped.
I guess I just wish you had left it a little more open rather than make it sound as though he was the one.
