  • Joan Vaux/Mother Guildford - The Woman Who SAVED Henry VIII
During the reign of King Henry VIII, the kings love life could be described as incredibly turbulent. Henry is known for being the monarch who had 6 wives, two of which he executed inside the walls of the Tower of London. Much of the chaos came after the King’s first marriage to Catherine of Aragon, as Henry was forced to split from the Catholic Church and Rome, in order to secure a divorce from Catherine. However he did have some help within court from courtiers and advisors who helped him to secure what he wanted. One of the women who helped Henry was Joan Vaux, also known as Lady Guildford.

The picture at 2.00 is of Mary Tudor and Charles Brandon, 1st Duke of Suffolk, not Louis XII.

This American wanted to know more about the 'Motherland ' and I began of course wth the Saxons, brushed over the Roman's, Norman Conquest etc BUT when I got to this era I slowed down and really studied it..stopping at Charles the 2nd. Hanovers didn't do much and Queen Victoria frustrated me big time lol. However, you identifying the pics was sharp. I had to go bk and of course you were right! Thx

Poor Catherine! IF Arthur was too fragile to perform his duties to his wife, they both would have conspired together to conceal it. So, they would have perpetuated the charade while he was still alive. I'm sure Catherine would not have wanted, given her unsteady life while her fate was left in Henry VII's hands, to tell him his son was impotent. She couldn't win for losing. So Joan Vaux probably just repeated what she saw. They slept together. What a sad, unfair time to be a Queen in England. This was a great presentation. Thank you.

I never did understand the “excuse” used by Henry that the bible said his marriage would be childless (hello, Mary) because he’d married his brothers widow, assuming they’d actually consummated the marriage. The bible also commands a man to take as wife the childless widow of his brother and get her pregnant with a son (apparently as his brother’s proxy) so his brothers name would not be lost in Israel. Girls didn’t count.

What a terrible woman to do what she did to Catherine of Aragon - one of the truly greatest Queen Consorts in history.

I just found out that I am descended from Mother Guildford! I live in the Southern united states so I was not expecting to be a person of fancy breeding lol! I never thought my mamaw would turn out to be one of my favorite historical people! My uncle got beheaded for being accused of fiddling around with my cousin Anne Boleyn! I hope that I would make mamaw lady Vaux proud. I wish that you would do a story about her equally fascinating mother Lady Cheney. Thank you for the wonderful content!

She must have been an interesting and favored woman to be favored by Henry VIII. Lettice Knollys was another woman born in the late Henry VIII era who lived a very long life. She made it to the reign of Charles I. I believe she was born the same year Henry VIII married Katherine Parr.

I love your channel! I enjoy hearing about the lives of some of the other, not-so-well-known folks from the Tudor era as well as the top tier people. Here in New Jersey we have an area known as "Vauxhall" in Union County, now I'm going to have to do my own research to see if any connection exists to this Vaux family. Your audio-visual footage, your splendid research and interesting information make your channel a treat!

Very much enjoy your series. In this episode, you mentioned that Henry broke from the Roman Catholic Church in order to secure a divorce from his wife. Now therein lies an interesting show but it may be outside of your scope. Since Henry & Catherine were married in the RC Church, it is only that body or those acting as their agent that can dissolve or annul a marriage they created. It's the same today wherein country A does not recognize the authority of country B to grant a divorce for a marriage performed in country A, the exception being if country A has previously granted that authority to country B. It is safe to assume the Roman Catholic Church granted no such authority to Henry's English Catholic Church making any and all acts null & void - including the euphemistic 'divorce' - imagine if countries and churches had the authority to nullify the acts or laws of a different country or church today! Never mind that Catherine is alleged to have consulted court physician on one, possibly two occasions during her marriage to Arthur to determine whether or not she was pregnant - throwing cold water on her claims of that marriage not being consummated (or she was extremely ignorant of the ways of the birds and the bees).

I love the content of your vids, HRH, but just one small gripe - I do wish you would acknowledge and thank viewers/subscribers who point out errors of fact in your content. Rather than viewing them as a pesky irritant, I applaud your unofficial 'fact-checkers' for enriching your efforts to correct inaccuracies. Instead of being aloof, engage them. Besides this nitpick, your channel is a glory box of fascinating royal insights and one of my faves! 👊👌👏👏💯💡

I got a chance to see the original of that painting back in May at the Morgan Library and Museum. It was interesting. The subject of the painting has a very serious and grave expression, but the original sketch that Holbein had done of her was also on display. In the sketch, she looks much more pleasant and gentle, with a rather sweet smile, like she was enjoying having her picture done.

Anne Boleyn never said that, and it’s clear he fell in love with Anne, their relationship lasted 10 years.

So she was responsible for Henry divorcing innocent Catherine of Aragon. Why marry your brother's wife to later condemn her, when you could have married anyone else. Henry married her for her wealth and powerful alliance with Spain.

The Tudor time had some of the most interesting people in English history.
I am curious as to the sources this channel uses? It seems to be mainly a reading of each persons Wikipedia page. I’ve notice you repeat common misconceptions that have been disproven by scholars.

Actually, Leviticus says no such thing about it being immoral for a man to marry his brother's widow. In fact, if a married man died within any children, his brother was obligated to marry his brother's widow in order to produce an heir for his late brother in order to keep the dead brother's property in the family.

I really like these documentaries, however, I think some of your paintings have the wrong name. Mary Tudor and King Henry 8th-it's not Henry and later Mary Tudor, pretty wth strong dark eyes..never ha. When it came to Katherine of Aragon and the king Henry, poor woman was between a rock and a hard place. Perhaps she just chose wisely...(concerning Arthur n Katherine consummation)
