I remember I & E back in the late 70's and early 80's. The participant walked to the staging area, turned around and warmed up and then faced front awaiting the judge's signal to start.
No talking. There was no need for introductions or explanations. Uniforms were worn so you knew where they marched. Names were on a sheet given to the judges and you had to start by breaking down the long roll followed by your solo. Man how things have changed. And there were reps from every corps and not one or two from a couple of top 12 corps and a few from class "B" corps. It was truly a contest and not like today where it seems as if the event is an exhibition. Not to take away anything from the guys and girls who actually put in the time, but it's just not as competitive as it once was.

I like how number 11 is an actual I&E solo. I can’t remember who did it but they had the exact same dialogue.

I really wanna see this guy on a drum kit. It’d be cool to see how his skills would translate over to a full kit.

I've REALLY been enjoying your presentations regarding funny drum student uh, "quirks?" I've seen the forget sticks many times - I had a few borrows in one side of my stick bag, but you had to pay me a quarter up front! And when we had a concert with the junior high performing as well... the HS was SO strange about the "little kids" using "their" mallets...I didn't have the heart to point out that the juniors had actually taken better care of the tymp and yarns we'd bought the year before - and it's concert (ain't nobody got time for lecture with set up/ uniform/ music to prepare AS the parents coming in the door... omg...) but the funniest thing: they NOTICED that the juniors' mallets were like new, and accused me of buying new the very next rehearsal. Lol - those are LAST YEAR'S... lol, I TOLD you it doesn't take long to wear them out if you don't treat them well! Lol! Suddenly, I'm not reminding them to put those mallets up neatly - not fining (in laps, ) for improper equipment handling... dang - should have had a combined concert with junior high sooner! Heh - even the brass teacher noticed that posture (and sound, ) IMPROVED after the junior high nearly owned the high school at fall concert! Lol... teens are so "teenish..." no matter what decade, they are always so "teenage..."

I was #51 when it came to my show my senior year in high school, aka the only year I was on drumline because the first three years I marched Alto sax, I was the overly hyped dutter. You heard me over the entire intro to the opener we had before the battery kicked in.
