Genius Period! No one can move me like a Jim Steinman song performed by Meatloaf. He's dead on about classic country music, it'll rip your heart out and step on it a few times - Jim's lyrics just tell the truth.
OMG... To see an artist construct something out of thin air and raw energy is amazing. To see Jim speak to a country vibe and actually take us there seemed magical.
I remember being a teenager and hearing so many song that had the same feel and emotion. I discovered Jim Steinman had written the.... Two out of three ain't bad, Making love out of nothing at all, read em and weep...all classics. What a great writer and composer.
No one could sing it like Meat Loaf. His recent performances are very sad, but check out his performance on "VH1 Storytellers"; that's how good he sounded!
The genius of songwriters such as Bob Dylan, Brian Wilson, and so on always gets mentioned in music conversations... and rightfully so. But with names like Bonnie Tyler, Air Supply, and of course, Meatloaf, Steinman deserves to be included in the conversation as well.
Now I understand. My first encounter with what is termed the "story" song was from country music. Steinman's genius was to move it into the rock genre. And of course, Meatloaf to interpret them.
The last refrain of that song is the killer. If not for that, the wong would be good, but not great. The pain Marvin Kee Aday feels as he grabs the hair on the back of his head in pain. That is the killer. That is what killed all of us - our lover who does not love us, grabs our heart out of our chest, and we are never the same.
He mentions country music - a country version exists, recorded by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Other than being based on the 7" edit, it's pretty faithful to the original.
After watching "a few best men" ive been trying to track down a soundtrack from the movie, it was great listening to such a beautiful song written by him and usually sung by a rock singer, but after hearing it from a gentle female voice i really want to know who the singer was, ive heard olivia newton sing it but this girl sung it so gently it justified the song just as much as meatloafs powerful version. After googling and wikapedia all i got was "the wedding band"?
Great song. Totally inappropriate for "first wedding dance". I think everyone knows at least one couple who did use it, though. If there were divorce lawyers in the house, they were probably sharpening their pencils :P
Jim Steinman and Meat Loaf have been musical partners for decades. They first met when Meat Loaf performed in Steinman's 1973 off-Broadway musical More Than You Deserve, which led to the two touring together in the National Lampoon road show in 1975, which led to them making records together. Steinman wrote the entirety of Meat Loaf's albums Bat Out of Hell, Dead Ringer, Bat Out of Hell II, and Braver Than We Are; and parts of Bad Attitude, Welcome to the Neighbourhood, and Bat Out of Hell III. You may also know some of Steinman's other compositions like Bonnie Tyler's Total Eclipse of the Heart, Air Supply's Making Love Out of Nothing at All, and Celine Dion's It's All Coming Back to Me Now.
News flash, the singer's you "know" aren't all...Neil Young or Bob Dylan. Not even all the songs Dylan sings are written by Dylan. There are people who NEVER get on stage but write songs for a living and hope that many people will record those songs and that many more will buy those recordings (back in the day, they used to be called "singles") and sheet music (publishing). The composer(s) receive royalties for such sales, or their heirs do for a specified period, I think it's life of the composer plus 50 or 100 years, I forget. Like nobody is getting royalties for "Home, Home on the Range" anymore, it's too old. However, some little old ladies who wrote "Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday, dear...whomever, happy birthday to you," still have an active royalty claim, or their heirs do, so Chili's and TGIFriday's can't sing it to you. The heirs have lawyers. Look at what Michael Bolton sings, he didn't write that. Everything (mostly) from Elton John was a collaboration with Bernie Taupin. Bernie doesn't perform but he's entitled to a cut every time Elton plays, someone covers, buys a CD of, or buys sheet music (to play at home on their piano) of "Candle in the Wind." They're called "evergreens," songs recorded, reaping royalties for composers.
This song is way to deep to be something he just sprung overnight beginning with a single lyric in mind to keep it on track, its too inspired. I refuse to believe it even though Jim Steinman says otherwise, he wouldn't be the first artist to lie about the inspiration for a song
"Bat Out of Hell" is like a PhD in songwriting. Thank you Jim.
Jim Steinman is one of the best writers ever.

He seem to have a nice down to earth personality
What an incredibly talented man Jim was. And what a voice ! He could’ve been a country singer no problem.

I wish he had brought out a version like this... It's beautiful
As soon as he started singing I thought "why did Johnny Cash never record this?" Brilliant osng.
I love Johnny Cash but Nobody can do it as beautifully as Meatloaf
No one could sing it like Meat Loaf. His recent performances are very sad, but check out his performance on "VH1 Storytellers"; that's how good he sounded!

Good old country music, where your wife has run off with your horse and your best friend has shot himself.. Rip Jim. We miss you.
Here Here!
Cool job singing reminiscent of Cash.
I always though the song would sound good as a country song
Look for Jamey Johnson's version of this song. I think he did a greatjob.
The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
did a cover of this song.

Rip Jim and now meatloaf

somebody needs to do this country version with a Cash voice.
@mario1921ful Yes I agree...like someone you could talk to...he is one amazing writer..
So interesting...
the best part of the song is the magic Fdim part on the chorus before "cause two outta three aint bad"
I would love to hear more Jim Steinman playing piano
@yew2533 Absolutely, spot on.
‘I’ll try’....... 😂😂😂
It would have made an excellent country song.

+letemburn97 i agree with you..too
has steinman written any rock operas?
OMFG. Johnny Cash should have recorded this
Never knew . I Guess maybe the reason Jamey Johnson covered this a few years back
Well Meatloaf sure knock that country $hit out of the park
Porter Wagner has some really dark stuff too…
Great song. Totally inappropriate for "first wedding dance". I think everyone knows at least one couple who did use it, though. If there were divorce lawyers in the house, they were probably sharpening their pencils :P
Haha he got that song from Elvis
How Jim sings, is dramatic but hot. Sorry... Just my honest opinion.
Doesn't matter, he composed it for great singers to sing. So many tunes this guy was behind in the 70's and 80's.
Bingham's an a aria Cambridge
Im. Abigfan
You meatloaf
No riply no rioley ....thats newt thaus a mute thats moot living proof
What was funny about this song though? I saw another video where there was humor in it.
Isn't this Meatloaf's song???
John Smith It was written by Jim Steinman
The Historian Did he play in the band with Meatloaf long ago? Why would somebody else write Meatloaf's song?

re-recorded, that is...

Interesting perspective, and I get it. But maybe he's just a lyrical genius - One can only imagine...
The balls and inspiration he gets to sing after he sang it the first time fills me with so much hope and inspiration god i miss him
