Bonnie Tyler stated in recent interview that Rory sang the entire version of Total Eclipse Of The Heart, with Jim Steinman on piano, so they could give Bonnie a listen to the song before she went in record it. Giving her an outline of the song to work with. I would love to hear Rory's version.

As much as I love Air Supply's version of this, I like Rory Dodd singing it better. And why hasn't Jim Steinman been recognized for the excellent pianist he is? This is a gem indeed!
Jim more often than not left the keyboard covered worth blood from his fingers. Rory didn't have to use that growly sound on some of the high notes...Jim just liked that sound of tension and asked that he add that in.
I guess you can’t fault the management team for going with Air Supply, given that it ended up being an iconic international number 1, and the air supply lead singer has an incredible voice and range, but I agree with you that Rory sings it better in this version.
Agree with both points. Jim Steinman almost always had another pianist do the studio recordings of his songs. Not sure why. He toured with Meatloaf on their first tour and did great. Maybe he thought he wanted a session musician or virtuoso to elevate the drama. I saw an interview where he talked about a RUclips video that explained the intricacies of Total Eclipse. He said “Did I do that fucking stuff? I didn’t even know that😝” He seemed like a cool guy. Probably he’s a perfectionist and sees himself as a songwriter first and foremost and wants the best for his songs. But yeah, he tore that song up IMHO.
@@natebelville Steinman was an able pianist, but he was also by his own admission a heavy-handed pounder. interesting additional lyrics ahead of "I can make the runner stumble." Bonnie Tyler inserts a different sequence here. Great song, one of the finest of its era.
So passionately beautiful -- dear god in heaven... never heard this unplugged version before!!!!!!! Rory pulls it off like no other, and NOBODY plays Jim Steinman like JIM STEINMAN!!!!!!!! Where can we buy the mp3?
If this is really THE Karla DeVito, then you know Jim personally and know whereof you speak. And great job on the "Going All The Way" song you did with Mr. Loaf a couple years back. You sounded great! Loved it! But really, did anyone ever find an mp3 or other download for this awesome Rory Dodd/Jim Steinman version of this song?
Just a masterpiece from the Master Steinman in the powerful voice of Rory Dodd, who -pretty much similar to Bonnie Tyler-, just followed the feeling and the directions impressed by Steinman on the way he wished he made the concept of his songs. This version is absolutely an incredible one!! .... Just new in 2024 from a pretty terrific girl in her voice, coming from Afrikaan Pretoria took this masterpiece and honor Mr Steinman with her powerful voice as well. A very good signal that Mr Steinman is alive and Mr Dodd keeps on being -on this particular song-, the perfect fit on his voice, for this song. Long live Mr Steinman!!!....
Rory Dodd tore this song up so good. I can totally see Meatloaf doing this song as well. Meatloaf was the perfect mouthpiece for Steinman. If Steinman’s songs went exclusively to Meatloaf, Meatloaf would have remained a huge star from the 70’s all the way to today. He’s still a legend in his own right but I think he will still be somewhat synonymous with the first Bat album. Steinman had some huge hits.
In fairness I would love to have heard Meat do this song when he had the ability, but unfortunately that was a long time ago. Jim and Rory’s version nails it for me every time
Wonderful! Like lostboysgoldengirls said a year ago we really should have a re-mastered `Bad For Good` by now. A bonus second cd with Rory Dodd demos would make me very happy. It would also help to give some deserved recognition for Rory.
With you all the way on that one!!! How fantastic would that be. Love everything Jim has created. And how blessed are we that he and Rory found their way to eachother. So grateful for all contributors on his many projects. Holly is absolutely stunning too. About to watch Streets of Fire... again. Love it all.
We are still waiting for this to happen, I just hope it's while Jim is still with us. I'm lostboysgoldengirls. I've just come back from Jim Stienmans Bat out of Hell musical. Tears rolling down my cheeks, sang every word. Blew me away. Also so glad this song was featured,
Nice one Mick! Trying to arrange with my sisters to get together and see this show. Your post has reminded me to make it happen sooner rather than later!
These demos need to get on Spotify somehow so I can sing it in the car!
I screen record them and edit them into a playlist. If that helps anything

Forget about this being the best version of this song, this is the best song PERIOD
One of my favorite writers of all time..A theatrical genius. His music painted the landscape of my youth..Thank you for my memories and chills.
Jim Steinman...he can make the old wounds start to heal and he can make the new ones hurt!
never heard of rory dodd until now. unbelievable vocals, fantastic lyrics.complete package
In case you didn't know (you probably do by now) Rory is the man singing with Bonnie Tyler on "Total eclipse of the heart."
@@seanwhitman799woah, i thought it was jim steinman. Cause i saw a video of Bonnie and jim singing to "Total Eclipse of the heart"
Rory sings choir on Meatloaf’s records too..........
I just learned about him today.
So much better than the hit version...Rory Dodd should have been a star...noone ever like Jim Stienman...a songwriting legend.
I love this song and love the demo with Rory Dodd. His voice is so loving and pure.
First time heard, brilliant...well it is Steinman after all
Been trying to contact Rory. Hope you see this. Dave from JAM in Dallas. Thank you, Dave Sharp

Pure gold a pleasure to listen to
Rory dodd grew up in Port Dover his family were neighbours of my Grandma.
This is indeed great, and certainly the best vocal version. I know there's other Rory Dodd/Steinman demos no-ones ever heard. One day.
One of the best❤️❤️❤️
This is just brilliant.
Fantastic! What a meeting! The genius Jim Steinman and the brilliant Rory Dodd! From Brazil, thanks for so much emotion!
Tq Historian for uploading this
I have to find this album!, his voice is out of this world!
Rest In Peace Jim and thank you
interesting additional lyrics ahead of "I can make the runner stumble." Bonnie Tyler inserts a different sequence here.
Loved it!
But really, did anyone ever find an mp3 or other download for this awesome Rory Dodd/Jim Steinman version of this song?
hey this incrdible yes
yes
Is this actually Karla?
I saw you with Meatloaf in Memphis. You were such a important part of the live show. Thank you for the memories.
His voice goes everywhere!
Wtf?
This should have been the released version.
Rory Dodd's voice is perfect for Steinman. Guess Jim knew that pretty early on.
I love Rory's singing!
I didn’t know this masterpiece !
This is fantastic!!!!!
Stunning. Absolutely made me cry.
make u cry everytime
Love it such beautiful words still relevant today.
Braver Than We Are showed Meat had lost it
The grueling tour schedule in 1977-78 to promote Bat Out of Hell destroyed Meat's voice forever. It was never the same again.
In fairness I would love to have heard Meat do this song when he had the ability, but unfortunately that was a long time ago. Jim and Rory’s version nails it for me every time
This is way beyond great!
Jim Steinman ist und bleibt genial!!!!!! FOREVER!!!!!
Rory Dodd BRINGS it!
Woo, an unheard verse in there - excellent.
visionary with a beautiful smile
Awesome.. Rory Dodd is a total badass! Lol. I'm just learning now that he's from Ontario, Canada! 😎
Wonderful! Like lostboysgoldengirls said a year ago we really should have a re-mastered `Bad For Good` by now. A bonus second cd with Rory Dodd demos would make me very happy. It would also help to give some deserved recognition for Rory.
That would be a blinder!!
I always seem to come back to this song at the end of the night.
After Surf's up, lost boys & golden girls & Left in the dark.
Wow, Jim was really gorgeous when he was young!
Love this song! I really liked Air Supply's version. This is good. My favorite remains Bonnie's off her album FREE SPIRIT. She just slays it!
Bonnie's version is really great
