I had one of these as a loaner when my X5 40i was in the shop. I was _very_ impressed. BMW nailed the trans tuning here. Shift points are very crisp yet seamless in any of the Sport modes yet there is enough low-end torque to get on it in any drive mode. Even though my X5 had the same engine and trans the X3 M40i felt appreciably faster. Both are very comfy and you can option them from barebones (but still good) to every bell and whistle available. And of course iDrive 7 is the best in the business. Although I miss mechanical gauges. The X3 M40i is still down on power to make me truly happy (the X5 wasn't my "fast" car) but it's a great car nonetheless. From what I've read the X3M is the true sweet spot - faster and better in every way than the "normal" X3 but not as harsh and uncomfortable as the X3M Competition. And with the B58/S58's track record getting better and better these will be a (hopefully) low-maintenance steal on the secondary market...if prices ever get back to normal. Nice video have a Blessed weekend all and Merry Christmas 👌

Great review, but as a long-time X3 M-Sport owner, sport + (which turns off traction control and DSC) is not a great idea in wet weather - Best used on the track. That said, put some Michellin pilot sport 4’s on it, and you can drive at just about any speed you like in just about any weather on or off road, without really ever loosing traction. I loved this video, my wife seriously does the same thing, in our car, feeling safe, secure, and really just enjoy’s being in there. I also would would say, and your video seems to confirm, it’s “wife safe” at seriously fun speeds. Considering getting the new M40i, and this video helped enormously….

I've had my 2020 for 5 months now and still have a ton of fun driving it. The dealer offered a good deal on the X3M too but after the test drive, a little too bumpy for a DD. Great M car though if you need the room. Glad I stuck with the M40i though, I already feel like I stop for gas often enough. No doubt the X3M would have been significantly worse.
@@vr4junkie385 I actually switched to a 2023 X3M last year. I drive 100% local streets, Mon-Fri. So lots of stop-and-go and would punch it whenever I was lucky enough to get an opening. So I was getting maybe 23-26ish MPG in the M40i(IIRC). Getting 12-15MPG driving the same way in the X3M. 😅

As a BMW owner I love how they look, drive, feel inside, but when you find out how much plastic is used in the powertrain especially hard plastic tubing that easily cracks or plastic pieces directly connected to the engine block that heat and warp the ownership experience really starts to disappoint once out of warranty. AND the extended warranty my dealer sold me, but didn’t disclose to me, doesn’t cover anything plastic (which are the most likely to fail). Bummer that they plan obsolescence so quickly in their vehicles because I love my 2 series. But these repairs get ridiculous $1500 to replace a $30 plastic tube. Lol
You nailed it there. I just paid ZAR9600 (USD660 or so) to replace a ZAR300 (USD 19 or so) water or coolant pipe. The issue was, they had to take out the manifold and some other parts to get to it. 99.9% of the charge was for labour!! Poor plastic piping, and my car is out of warranty. Decided to trade it in for an X3 M40i, pre owned but still under warranty for my family's peace of mind.

The vents are not fake and are fully functional. Look inside the front wheel wells and you will see that the air inlets on the inner rear walls. From there, air is channeled out the side vents. I know because I own an X3 M40i 😉
I recommend the Bootmod3 - I modded my 2020 X3 M40i - and stage 1 takes you to 440 bhp 0-60 is 4s and a great burble through the exhaust. Worth every penny. My interior is exactly the same so protect the seats or they go blue with your jeans!
The quality of this car review is by far better than most on RUclips. Do you know if this X3 had the Adaptive M Suspension and/or M Sport differential ? I'm torn between an X3 m40i or an X5 xDrive40i. I can't decide if I wanna go sport or a bit higher luxury ! Currently have an E90 335i......
Thank you so much! It did not have the adaptive suspension, but I believe it had the sport diff. The regular suspension setup is a great compromise between comfort and performance. If you don’t need the extra space, I’d go with the X3- better performance, handling and fuel economy.
Fantastic review. I am getting mine ( top of the line trim) next week. Blue with cognac interiors. I just couldn’t help grinning through out your review 👌👍
I was either buying one just like this or a new Porsche Macan. Went for the Macan but will probably trade it in for the facelifted X3 M40i coming next year. I had a 2019 X3 2.0T and it was great though. Tech is way better in the BMW. The Porsche was just a (weird to say this) much better deal right now and it’s interior is gorgeous.
Amazing Video! deciding between an 19 x5 m40i and the x3 m40i. video making me go this nuts!!!atleast until kids are tad bit bigger. Cant have my m3 now, so this will have to do for those milk runs!! get to have my cake, and eat it too! Great Review !!
Great video. I test drove and loved it. Ordering next week. Is the one you tested "Dark Graphite Metallic" with "Canberra Beige Vernasco leather" or is the interior the "Oyster Vernasco Leather"?
@@NotSoHandyCarGuy I own one! It is fast and comfortable - but lacking the best tech features offered on more expensive BMW's, like Blind spot and Logic 7 surround within the Harmon Kardon system. Also loud, but could be louder.
Great video! Ideal timing as I have just recently ordered mine and should be receiving in a couple of weeks. I know you got it but was curious on your thoughts on ride quality with the 21in rims. I optioned it the same and while it looks better, hopeful it doesnt make the car feel stiff. Thanks dude!
Thank you Jan! Very cool, I think you're going to love it. Yeah the 21's look great, but the ride is definitely on the firm side. Not uncomfortable, though. You can feel the bumps, but they're not intrusive... if that makes any sense. I think it's the perfect amount of road feel for a sporty SAV 👍Thanks for watching!
hey Dude liked your pod cast what is the price option for ventilated seats and wireless charging? and what did it cost out the door. Thanks for your time, Randy
I drove an SQ5. I liked it, a lot. I drove an X3 M40i and fell in love. Three guesses which one is in my driveway? BMW really hit the mark on this one.
Also, I'm in this fix where when I spec this out it comes out to a good $60-63k which is the same as a much bigger Q7. I know Q7 doesn't have the same performance but it's much bigger as a whole package. What's your thoughts on this bud?
I have X4 M40i , little bit more sportier , lower , longer , steering wheel is thinner, 21 inches wheels , individual pack , aerodynamics are better ... but I have the same feelings !
Wow! I cannot believe what I just watched. That exhaust on startup! Those fast runs. Love it! Holy cow, I think its enough power to make my kids vomit in the back!
Love the review! I'm thinking about ordering the 2021 X3 M40i. I am very curious to know what the ride is like with the 21" wheels? and if this spec has the Adaptive M Suspension? Is the ride noticeably harsh or uncomfortable? I'm thinking about ordering my build with the 20" wheels just in case and opting for the Adaptive M Suspension. Please let me know what you think. Thanks!
Thank you! This example does not have the active suspension. That being said, the ride is stiff but not uncomfortable. I feel like BMW really nailed a good compromise between performance and comfort. I’m not sure the active suspension would be worth the extra dough $$
great video! I'm thinking about getting one of these, because my wife misses her 2014 M135i that we let go last year, and she misses it. would also be good if you let Samantha have a drive to get her views as well.
Thank you! I highly recommend them, especially if your wife is already used to Bimmers. And you’re right! I’ll let Samantha drive more in future videos... if she’s up for it 😉
First video of yours that I watch, and your wifey? Her facial expressions are Epic lol Not sure if you still have this X3 but wondering how reliable is the water-to-air intercooler?
Hahaha I’ll pass that along to her. My family still has it, and we haven’t had a single issue with the car yet. No issues with the intercooler. Are you having issues with yours?
@@NotSoHandyCarGuy I actually have been scouring the internet, looking for ways to accept the fact that I could potentially become a BMW owner once again lol We are empty nesters, and my last BMW was an E36 M3 back in the 90s. I have always liked the X4/X6 shape, well, because I grew up in the era of the AMC Eagle sedan and wagon. When the Acura ZDX came out in '09 I believe, it was an instant hit in my heart lol. Fast forward to now, and I have been hearing great things about the B58 engine. But the water to air intercooler is a bit off-putting, for me. as I've always had Air to Air intercooled, turbocharged vehicles (still do in our B9 Audi S4, and our Subaru STI. When I have the need to row my own gears). AN X3 M40i however, would fit the sporty, fun, grandparent-mobile just fine. I have owned Audi vehicles since the late 80s/early 90s so naturally the SQ5/Porsche Macan would scratch that itch. But your X3 just sounds nice and aggressive. Sorry for the long reply..
@@NotSoHandyCarGuy I would say so. BMW claim 4.4 seconds, but I've seen someone clock 3.9 on video. I'm convinced to get one your review was marvelous too!
Yes!! It was probably someone else, but I clocked a 3.9 in my POV driving video. I’d definitely recommend it. Fingers crossed that the reliability is good. The B58 has been decent so far
@@NotSoHandyCarGuy I'm glad you followed up with that. I am extremely curious to know how reliable it is! Is there anything about the vehicle you wish you could change?
@@joeeacott9707 you never know how reliable BMWs are going to be 😬 it’s a hit or miss with them- mostly misses with their performance models. And yes, but not much. I’d like a bit of a skinnier steering wheel, and for the ability to turn the interior accent lights red. They’re LED lights with like 8 million color combos and BMW left out red for some reason. I also wish there was a spare tire and the rear seats had a little more thigh support. The lack of rear tire allows for weight reduction and improved cargo room, and they get around it by equipping their models with runflats from the factory. But overall those are really minor things. I mostly care about performance and build quality, which this car nails
How has the x3 been now after 3 years. I’m looking at same exact car with 20k miles and wanted to know as i have never owned BMW and didn’t know reliability with the B58 platform- thanks
So far, everything has been 100% flawless. The car is currently only at around 70k miles, but it’s been put through it’s paces. It seems like the key to longevity of these is to keep the oil fresh. The main issues with the B58’s are going to be oil leaks from valve cover gasket and oil filter housing. Those usually happen after 100k miles. I can’t say much about the diffs or driveshaft stuff, but drivetrain-wise, these are very solid cars, and I’m not aware of any common issues with the ZF tranny. No codes or sensor malfunction yet, either. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy a used X3 of this generation, as long as it’s been cared for and it has the straight 6. I stand by everything I said in this video.
@@NotSoHandyCarGuy ok the vin shows no issues with accidents or anything and only has 21K miles. 1 owner. So outside of oil changes no other major problems or concerns besides brakes and tires which is normal. No check engine lights or anything to be aware of ?
I appreciate that! Thanks for the comment. And no, I would love to do a 1/4 mile but I lost my Dragy unit somewhere. I would imagine somewhere around high 12’s or 13 seconds
@@NotSoHandyCarGuy Thanks for the reply! I was wondering on that as there is a drag race done by Matt Watson where he compares this one with a hybrid Q3 and a Volvo XC 60, the M40i is the fastest with 12.9, however it seems the Europe spec has 360 HPs while the Americas spec is 382 so I was wondering having the same toque figures and different HP number if that would make thing any different . Thanks again!
It's my mother's car! So I do have access to all of that. So far, it's been flawless. But it only has 18k-20k miles on it. You never know with BMW, so only time will tell. But yeah, as of now, it seems very good.
Personally this for me. Mostly based on styling, though. However, the 3.0’s that were in the SQ5 are also great engines. But there’s something about this straight 6 that’s just magical
the trunk is working from inside , you have to seat in driver seat , pull the button then the trunk will go down slowly first then close . did not test the windows
It depends on your driving! You going long distances at all? Are you leasing or keeping short term? If yes, then I’d go BMW. Otherwise the model Y is a good choice. But honestly, everything is going electric soon, so this might be one of your last times to buy a gas X3 BMW. I’d personally just go with the BMW to enjoy the sound and feeling of combustion a little longer 🤷🏼♂️
great work, I do own the 2021, I do enjoy driving this car. My brother has the x5 and he says thw x3 40i is a lady's car. He does not know what he's talking about,
Yes it is! The exterior shots are all mic’d up directly next to the exhaust. Sure the crackles could be louder in sport+ but for stock ECU and exhaust I find them to be just right. I’m sure with some aftermarket exhaust you’d hear them loud as day.

Thank you! It’s certainly gonna be an upgrade from the Acura. You’re gonna love it
I’m sold!! I need the X3 M40!! Thanks for the review!
Awesome!! Glad you liked it
Not at all mate. Love the enthusiasm. I am going to lease this car in October. It’ll be my 4th Bimmer. I currently have a 2014 BMW i3 REx and this will be my go to ICE car. Cheers Matt. Keep up the good work. I think you and the missus really liked driving the X3 M40i.
Exciting!!!!! I think you’re going to really like it. Cheers to you too, sir. We absolutely did like driving it.
What do you use to protect besides covers. Find a product that works?
The quality of this car review is by far better than most on RUclips. Do you know if this X3 had the Adaptive M Suspension and/or M Sport differential ? I'm torn between an X3 m40i or an X5 xDrive40i. I can't decide if I wanna go sport or a bit higher luxury ! Currently have an E90 335i......
Thank you so much! It did not have the adaptive suspension, but I believe it had the sport diff. The regular suspension setup is a great compromise between comfort and performance. If you don’t need the extra space, I’d go with the X3- better performance, handling and fuel economy.
@@NotSoHandyCarGuy You mention the seats comfort - you didn't find them cramped at all ? the sport seats ?
Fantastic review. I am getting mine ( top of the line trim) next week. Blue with cognac interiors. I just couldn’t help grinning through out your review 👌👍
Pumped for you!! Thanks for the comment
Excellent review of this lovely ride Matt. I am from the UK and really enjoyed your accent mate.
Aye, thanks Adam! Some people thought it was rubbish, but I’m glad you enjoyed it 😂
I was either buying one just like this or a new Porsche Macan. Went for the Macan but will probably trade it in for the facelifted X3 M40i coming next year. I had a 2019 X3 2.0T and it was great though. Tech is way better in the BMW. The Porsche was just a (weird to say this) much better deal right now and it’s interior is gorgeous.
Looking forward to owning one of these 🫡
Amazing Video! deciding between an 19 x5 m40i and the x3 m40i. video making me go this nuts!!!atleast until kids are tad bit bigger.
Nice real world review!!
the BMW dealership always gives us the weather Mats for free lmao
The only thing I can say is that you really love this car.
You know what you’re doing in the videos , you are yourself! Do the bmw x2 m35i
Thanks Cody! I can try to get my hands on one 👍🏼
@@NotSoHandyCarGuy Thanks, Matt. I appriciate you getting back to me. Look forward to checking out your content
It’s defo a firm ride but just the right amount 😊.
Thanks for your review. I just bought one because of your video
No problem man! Dang I should be getting commission on the sales LOL
hey Dude liked your pod cast what is the price option for ventilated seats and wireless charging? and what did it cost out the door. Thanks for your time, Randy
I drove an SQ5. I liked it, a lot. I drove an X3 M40i and fell in love. Three guesses which one is in my driveway? BMW really hit the mark on this one.
SQ5?
What color is the exterior? Is this the Dark Graphite Metallic? GREAT footy by the way. Thank you in advance for clarifying on the color question.
I'm going back and forth between a 2022 M340i sedan and this X3 M40i. Ugh, cant decide.
Do you need the extra room/ground clearance?
I love the color combination you chose!
Could you give the details
The transitions on topic have the savagegeese vibe
I probably did that subconsciously haha, savagegeese is great.
Fantastic! Loved this review. You've convinced me to buy.
Dang, I should be a BMW rep! Thanks for watching!
@@NotSoHandyCarGuy yeah honestly! I was looking for a Mercedes Benz amg suv and sq5 .. but this car is something else.
I dig that you are NH based - nice to see local reviewers on youtube
For sure! I’m actually in Foxboro, but all of my family lives on the north shore, the sea coast and Maine.
@@NotSoHandyCarGuy cool! Nice to see local places that are familiar on the youtubes... keep it up - love the content
@@squamnh appreciate that a ton! Thank you
Awesome review! Thank you for your video!
🙏🏼 you’re very welcome
Just bought it Hell yea baby
That Matt Watson impression was spot on bro!
Ayyyyyye 🇬🇧
Also, I'm in this fix where when I spec this out it comes out to a good $60-63k which is the same as a much bigger Q7. I know Q7 doesn't have the same performance but it's much bigger as a whole package. What's your thoughts on this bud?
You make me wanna go and get me a new bmw right now 👍😜
DO IT
Great review I want one 😎
You stole my heart when you compared the steering wheel to a Les Paul. 😆😆
Baseball bat haha
@@NotSoHandyCarGuy I test drove a ‘21 M40i - wow!
Anyone know the difference between a 2019 and 2021 M40i? Besides the power upgrade… I also heard the infotainment was upgraded as well. Worth it?
I have X4 M40i , little bit more sportier , lower , longer , steering wheel is thinner, 21 inches wheels , individual pack , aerodynamics are better ... but I have the same feelings !
You should invest in a great performance tool Dragy. It actually is accurate for 0-60 etc. I use it on my M40i ;)
Awesome!! Ended up purchasing one!
Heck yeah! Happy for you
@@NotSoHandyCarGuy Appreciate the response! Sounds like I should be totally fine without it especially with the 20" wheel option
great video!
What is the best way to Pop, burble, crackle? I tried everything but cant seem to pull off the theatre you get,
We have one. It’s ridiculous. Love it. Great review
That’s awesome Drew! Glad to hear you’re loving it. Thank you!
The fact that you guys keep smiling when you punch it tells the whole story.
Absolutely. And it’s way quicker than BMW claims
Her smile when you punch it!
What’s that paint colour?
SquamScott Road. Holy hell, what a name.
Totally Native American 🇺🇸
I just bought one..yay
@@mikej3755hey just curious did you buy the used bmw and if so how was your experience? I’m looking to get one too.
Great video, thanks for sharing. Do you know, how long does it take for this one to do 1/4 mile? . Thanks again!
@@rrenteri that’s a great point! I’ll be sure to let you know if I end up timing a 1/4 mile.
@@NotSoHandyCarGuy Thanks man! I am waiting for my X3 M40i :) , It should get here by early December. After seeing you video can’t wait to get it!
@@rrenteri you’re gonna love it!!
That straightpipe reference tho 😂
Amazing content
Wait do you own this car? Would love to hear longer term thoughts? Reliable?
It's my mother's car! So I do have access to all of that. So far, it's been flawless. But it only has 18k-20k miles on it. You never know with BMW, so only time will tell. But yeah, as of now, it seems very good.
Love her reactions 😂
Was the front seat all the way back when you showed the rear seat? Just trying to get a perspective on rear seat space.
The seat was in a position that I would have sat comfortably in the front seats. I’m 6ft tall 👍🏼
this or the Audi sq5 what would y'all choose?
Personally this for me. Mostly based on styling, though. However, the 3.0’s that were in the SQ5 are also great engines. But there’s something about this straight 6 that’s just magical
Have one. Awesome car. 😎
handy tip: if you hold the boot button in on the key, it will auto close too :)
Oh for real?? I feel like I tried that and it didn’t work. I’ll try it again!
@@NotSoHandyCarGuy keep holding for like 10 seconds... same guys with the open and close button for the windows up and down
not sure in USA/Canada, regulations are paranoid ... they are afraid you can cut a squirrel in two parts , remotely :(
the trunk is working from inside , you have to seat in driver seat , pull the button then the trunk will go down slowly first then close . did not test the windows
How was the ride quality? did it have the Adaptive M suspension?
No adaptive suspension, but it rides very well. On the stiffer side, but not uncomfortable or bouncy... just sporty. A great compromise.
dope review
Thanks dude!!
Oh, and an FYI, if you like your steering lighter you can dial it back in the Sport Individual mode. Best of both worlds.
How do you automatically set to sports plus mode when you turn on the car? I have to put it to sport/sport plus as it defaults to comfort every time.
This or a Model Y performance? I feel crippled having to make a decision!
He does not know what he's talking about,
Is this really the 2021 model in the US? I've been reading online that the 2021 model year has reduced crackles and pops to virtually none.
Yes it is! The exterior shots are all mic’d up directly next to the exhaust. Sure the crackles could be louder in sport+ but for stock ECU and exhaust I find them to be just right. I’m sure with some aftermarket exhaust you’d hear them loud as day.
What’s the lease price for this one and down payment?
I'm not exactly sure, this isn't a lease.
