Currently, we have an M140i that is run on Shell's V-Power unleaded. The B58 is a monster of an engine, especially in something the size of a 1er. If the other manufacturers brought cruise-missile specified hot-hatches to the party, BMW arrived with a nuke in the M140i.
To be fair...the X3 is like $56,000 thr GV70 is $42,000. ..the top of the line GV70 would get you at a price point of $57K. When there is a $5-$10K+ price difference in cars, the expectation is higher for the more $$$$ car. Genesis is to give you a discount version of a BMW like performance. However it (in all car magazines) falls just short all the time. They come the closest to BMW because at Kia/Hyundai, they hired the former BMW engineers to build their performance cars like the Stinger and the G70 to give them a similar experience. They were designed to compete on the price point and I think they do overall quite well as the BMW engineers working in Korea did their jobs well.
BMW always rates their engines output at the minimum they will perform. so they will always be more powerful than the spec sheet suggests, to which they will always get the bragging rights.
Not sure why but BMW always totally sandbags their power numbers. I have a 2022 X5 and it's fast, much faster than the power numbers would suggest. Here the Genesis had .5 liter bigger engine and negligible weight difference but the BMW just smoked it.

I just ordered a 23 X3M40i 2 weeks ago with high performance wheels/tires and with the M sport diff. I test drove a 2020 GLC43 for a week an I was impressed , but haven’t driven a x3M40i. Genesis transmission aren't well tuned for hard acceleration. The Germans on the hand, oh man... And that gv70 is heavy af. Thought is would be lighter.
I'm a BMW fan...but I'd honestly take the Genesis GV70 over the BMW. Not sure what it is..but this BMW facelift make it look like a Subaru from the back end.. Genesis styling is more my taste, inside and out.
I'm not how sure I believe the authenticity of this. Many Genesis competitors understand the current success of the brand and are posting negative reviews of the cars - but if you read the comments, no one agrees including me. Perhaps in a drag race, the BMW is quicker, but i'm not sure. I don't drag race, but have 2 small girls that take to daycare and the value and quality for dollar had me sold on Genesis over Mercedes, BMW, Porche, Volvo - not to mention Lexus, Acura, etc. No comparison, so I'm not surprised to see videos obviously focused on Genesis shortcomings because that is what a worried competitor will do. GV70 has Beauty and a fake exhaust 😁
Gv70 does have launch control. Would really love to see these cars race again where both cars are launched
Interior maybe but exterior 100% not . The genesis is borderline ugly outside
@lightofthewrld777 There are real exhausts inside those two exhaust ports, unlike those German brands that go as far as to fake their exhausts. Talk about irony.
@clam741 That's incredibly subjective. Most reviewers (whether they are sugarcoating it or not) love the styling of the Genesis GV70 over the same competing segment BMW or Mercedes Benz.
We KNEW how this would turn out lol. The GV70 does have launch control, btw. I drove my buddies X3 M40 this past weekend and it's def a beast and fun to drive. I'm def a fan of both.
Hi Sam , please do Gv70 2.5t and a regular x3 ….thank you for this one
First saw Genesis GV70 and we were pretty much decided. Just for formality went and saw BMW X3 next but there was no comparison. GV70 is beauty from outside and inside.
Couldn't agree more
Today’s Beamers are made to compete with Porsche. .. and it shows 😜
Factssss
I was dead set on buying an Mercedes GLC 43 AMG and had been researching them for two years. I finally test drove one and fell in love. Then I test drove an X3 M40i. Bought it the next day.
I test driven the new GLC 43 AMG loaded. It was nice , while I am in my current 23 x3M40. I love it over the GLC, however the new x3M50 I don’t love so much. When my lease is up I’m thinking about getting the 25 Mercedes GLC43 ,BUT I’m a BMW fan so I might go with the M340i lol but congrats on your M40
Not sure if B in B58 stands for
Beast or beatdown
BEAT-58 not B58
I have a first Gen B58 in my 2018 340i rear wheel drive six speed manual and I can say, hands down, the funnest car I have driven in ages. Have not driven the new Supra or the new S58. But for what I paid, I’m extremely satisfied.
Also, to anyone comparing interiors and features, you’re not the demographic for a driver car. Go buy that I-Phone on wheels, a Tesla Plaid.
Currently, we have an M140i that is run on Shell's V-Power unleaded. The B58 is a monster of an engine, especially in something the size of a 1er. If the other manufacturers brought cruise-missile specified hot-hatches to the party, BMW arrived with a nuke in the M140i.
I don’t think anyone expected a different result.
Same outcome happened when he raced an X5 and a GV80.
To be fair...the X3 is like $56,000 thr GV70 is $42,000. ..the top of the line GV70 would get you at a price point of $57K.
When there is a $5-$10K+ price difference in cars, the expectation is higher for the more $$$$ car.
I can appreciate Genesis, they came into the car game copying everyone, but then flipped it once they knew that the car came is WIDE open. They have that hunger to be the best like Toyota/Honda/Infinity/Acura when they first hit the car scene.
How are they copying everyone my goodness
I'm not sure where you're getting the $$$ #'s. But the X3 M40i starts at $57,800, while the G70 3.5T starts at $53,100. Maybe you meant G70 starts at $52000
That first race had me laughing out of my seat! The commentary while the gap kept growing was hilarious! 😆
He was like it's going it's going Jesus Christ 😂
Both are awesome car
If I get to choose one of them for second car, I'll take GV70
But if I get to drive only one car, I'll get X3
Ok. That intro video and music was fantastic. That really, really needed some engine sounds and a launch at the end. Cutting to an in-car hosting gig was such a let down of a beautiful 1:15
I’m hoping the price of these vehicles are in the video. Love the work my brother. Price is key on this level. I’m sure the X3m40 is gonna smoke the GV70 because I believe the the BMW has a part hybrid system.
Man, only if Sam took out that case of water before the race. It could been different result.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Who knows how many more cases are hidden behind the rear seat...
Man that b58 definitely puts in work. Only thing in debate is wether it will b reliable definitely a gem of an engine though
It’s been out since 2015. It’s reliable.
@@davidalenick1246 very reliable lol
BMW ME ALL DAY ! I can’t wait till I take delivery of my x3M40i in December!
Sam the BMW X3-M is a high-performnce car. The Genesis is a luxury car, period. They have no business racing each other!
It's not an X3M. Its an X3M40I. Middle of the road model.
Awesome video. Thank you. Good to see this comparison. Everyone says buy genesis over bmw but glad I bought an X3 M40i
I must say I do enjoy your drage races sir. The selection of cars is beautiful.
The content stright to the point. Always a pleasure watching your uploads.
That genesis is sweet. Wow!!. But that Bima yooooo!!!!! 😂 😂 😂 She is the one.
Good video. I have a feeling my 2019 M40i would deliver the same result with a lower horsepower rating.
Wish I had the black trim like the one in this video.
The GV70 3.5 does have launch control & sports +2 you didn't use either, but you used it in the BMW
M40i is the quickest BMW non M SUV.
I owned 2022 X3 Competition myself running on resonator delete/ non-Cat Downpipe conservative tune 710 WHP ultimate sleeper.I beat many cars mostly dodge (Demon) included, mustang and Audi and loving it.
I love my X3 M40i....didn't even consider a Genesis or Volvo. The X3 M40i is quicker than the GLC43 and way more practical than the Macan. It's the perfect all rounder without being too bulky and yet roomy and quick!
I just ordered a 23 X3M40i 2 weeks ago with high performance wheels/tires and with the M sport diff. I test drove a 2020 GLC43 for a week an I was impressed , but haven’t driven a x3M40i. Isn’t that crazy lol , but I chose the BMW because Merc was charging 10k over MSRP 😵💫🥴. So the BMW is faster than the GLC 43? Good! I hoped it was. The GLC 43 didn’t even come with a standard pano roof..for that price point I’ll pass, but the GLC did have a beautiful colorful digital dash cluster display which I love along with the auto changing ambient lighting, the red seat belts and the nice steering wheel w amg unit controls
@@Mr.Lambert777 Nice! That also swayed me...the Merc option packs are akward and the BMW packs are way better configured/mixed. My dad has a GLC diesel which I saw and drove a number of times, so I really noticed the difference in driving dynamics with the X3. Great choice!
I wouldn't say this is a walk of shame, because this is the outcome that literally EVERYONE expected. It's like If a college basketball player lost to an NBA player 1-on-1. It'd only be a walk of shame if the Genesis/college player won.
In Australia, GV 70 3.5 and X3 m40 priced at quite close. Normal buyer definitely will choose X3 over GV70. Unless Genesis offer 20-30% promotion over their price but in officially Hyundai Australia doesn't offer any discount on Genesis brand car (mentioned in their webpage, but real practice in dealership, idk)
I would like to see the actual price differences, which is a definite factor when purchasing a new vehicle. If they were the same price, no brained. But if your talking another 20 grand…
GREAT video brother! I've been wanting to see the new GV70 in action! Thank you!
I currently have a 20 X3 M40i and a 22 GLC43. I've also had a 17 Macan S and 21 SQ5. I wonder how the GV70 would do against the SQ5 as it's the lowest on HP in this "sporty crossover" class @ 349HP.
Macan S vs x3? Which do you prefer?
He already did an SQ5/GV70 video.
ruclips.net/video/Pu7-pl5UVRw/видео.html
@@geforce5591 The Macan S was a great car but it's pretty cramped for a SUV. Also, the 2017 Macan S I had only had 335HP at the time, I think the new Macan S inherited the old GTS motor so it's got more power now. Between the Macan and the M40i, I choose the M40i. It just does a whole lot more overall. It drives great, sounds great, great tech and utility. Believe me, I lease 2 cars at a time every 3 years through my company so I'm fortunate enough to drive a lot of cool cars 3 years at a time. If I had to choose 1 car, it would be the X3 M40i.
It already beat the sq5 on this channel.
im getting the gv70 probably get it tuned or something but i all the bmws ive had or been in the throttle response is incredible even my co workers audi rs7 don't respond as good as most the bmws ive been in.
Typical Genesis soft launch... The GV70 looks SO much better. It won a recent comparison vs the X3 M40i... still that B58 is a monster engine!
It still looks a cheap Hyundai
@@hassanger8128 ...said no one with any clue about the Genesis/Hyundai/Kia group in the last several years...wake up buddy, it's not 2010 anymore!
@@hassanger8128 dude stfu, and get your biased ass out of here. Gotta be a fool if you think gv70 is cheap looking
@@hassanger8128 that why it took the bmw in cars and drivers in a big way?? 🤔🤔
@@hassanger8128 you’re delusional
The M40i puts the power down so nicely.
Take both to the dyno to see if bmw put less HP in the specs
Une image vaut mille mots la performance coréenne est ordinaire pour la puissance annoncée et pratiquement au même prix. BMW #1
Love it! Genesis isn’t even close
I love my X3 B58.
It is more expensive to buy X3 M40i, but you will still choose BMW。
As if there were any doubts... Genesis is "luxury" first, the only somewhat fun car they have is g70.
These are compact SUVs. For the features and the price of the GV70 and extra cash in my pocket. Genesis takes it all day vs BMW
Now you already know how this would turn out the b58 engine is one of the best engines. Bmw makes
Cool race. Which one wins the race to the repair shop? I'll bet it's neck and neck.
Hope that Genesis can up their game with their engines
Yeah. The M40i with that sweet B58 is peerless in its class. Next.
I knew how this would turn out without even having to watch the video...
Definitely knew the outcome curious to see the 4cy version of the x3 vs that same genesis
The 4 cylinder X3 is pretty weak. The 2.5T GV70 would have it. I hope you weren’t referring to the GV70 3.5T vs X3 4 cylinder.
Awesome videos as usual. Love all your content. Would appreciate some starts in matric Kilowatts and Newton metres. Greetings from South Africa 🙏🏿
Correction stats 👌
More power ,better engine, better transmission
Saw that win coming
But I would still take the gv70 as my daily
Why?
@@88hemoglobin I drove both cars and I found the genesis to have the nicer interior and more comfortable.
Much easier infotainment systems to use , it's also less expensive while having more features so you got much more for the money. And the Rader cruise control system is just lfar better when using it on the freeway. And then you have the looks whenever that car passes bye people break their necks but when that BMW passes no one even notices.
Saw this coming lol
I think Genesis is trying to go the angle of refined luxury vs. BMW's angle of best in class engine & transmission
Going off of tech, comfort, quality, and design, the Genesis wins hands down in my opinion
Yep, if requirement is drag racing then maybe get BMW. If you want everyday head turning beauty, comfort, luxury then get Genesis
b58 is probably making 382HP to the wheels lol.
From BMW'S website description.........
"The 3.0-liter BMW M TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder engine includes new 48V mild-hybrid technology for more efficient operation and enhanced acceleration.".......
It's a hybrid.......not a fair comparison
Good video I heard that the X3 M40 suspension is very hard not comfortable. Can you do this X3 against an Amg in this class
Wow, that was bad😟!! I’m still glad I’d purchased the GV70.
The b58 is bulletproof, nuff said…
Wished you have this GV70 to go against the MDX Type S yesterday..That X3 is fast!
Can you do a race against the x3M40i vs The GLC 43 AMG ..
Any one can make luxury cars now a days but not every one can make powerful cars 👍
There’s not a motor that Hyundai has which even remotely comes near the B58.
B58 engine is 🤤🤤
Nothing in the class that comes close. Not even the Macan or GLC.
Nothing in the class, not just Genesis.
@@bradleyscarreviews Audis 2.9 Twin turbo V6 can easily keep up with this or The Porsche Macan

BMW is def king and underrate HP numbers, but that’s why they’re in the shop more than other brands. 🤷🏼♂️
Please can you do a drag between X7 40i v GV80 thanks!
You can hear the quality difference in motors right off the bat lol
Any chance we will see the Model Y LR vs the X3 M40??
Great vid Sam!!! Love the GV 70 so special but the M other wort to describe.
I have a 2005 3X and I love my car. It gets up and GOES. I've driven other fast cars but the stability doesn't compare with my old BMW.
I'm on my second Hyundai these days, and I've learned one thing for sure. Hyundai seriously nerfs the launch of all their vehicles. with a 10/100,000 drivetrain warranty, they are not interested in replacing motors and trannys.
True, but apparently using the parking break builds more boost!
Do you use the same dramatic music for Prius vs Corolla drag race?
Love this channel
Car and driver gave the overall win to the GV70 over the X3m40i in a big way. For me it's enough to show that Genesis in a better choice then any German rival. And sam the GV70 has a launch control. Maybe it wouldn't loose so bad if you used it.
From a racing perspective the GV70 got obliterated from a roll too, not just a dig.
@@brosephstalin2491 but not as bad as the dig. Every one knows that the bmw is faster. The better overall suv is the GV70.
Genesis is a good luxury brand car. But German competitors are so strong.
Genesis transmission aren't well tuned for hard acceleration. The Germans on the hand, oh man...
And that gv70 is heavy af. Thought is would be lighter.
when will you drop a video with the 17 accord coupe v6?
I adore my GV70 and based on my experience will only buy genesis going forward
