I’d love for someone to conduct a survey regarding actual buttons vs touch screens. Seems companies have made the decision for us just bc an iPhone is a touch screen. I hate touch screens in cars myself.
Buttons are essential for climate control. I appreciate a touch screen infotainment system for Apple CarPlay. The new Range Rover has gone back to more buttons.

Cracking review Sam. I had a M40i for about 15 months, and as you say a great SUV, mated with the phenomenal B58. Mine didn’t have the tech pack (had the other ones including Pano) so I had CarPlay coded, and that was full screen. I'm lucky to have the newer x3 m40I LCI with cognac leather. It's a great all-rounder and BMW has improved some of the negatives listed in the video, like wider apple car play and new "hey BMW" voice assistant.
I have a late 2018 X3M40i at my holiday home in Cape Town, sublime cold start sound, performance from the 6 cyl twin-turbo is massive, great tech but not as luxurious or as nicely finished inside as my wife’s AMG GLC43, but I love the way it drives and handles (excellent M-sport suspension, not like the bone-jarring X3M), and the Phytonic Blue colour is epic. Only done 8000km because of covid I couldn’t get there for past 2 yrs, but was plugged into a CTEK and started first time, tyres a bit low but not flat, not bad for 2 years standing still. Although I love that car, I bought the X5M50i in New Zealand a year ago, had to get it especially imported by BMW NZ, prefer the bigger boot and spaciousness, way more luxurious and upmarket inside, improved tech, and sizzling V8 twin-turbo sound with performance that’s even better than the X3, but it is a bit harder to park, quite a bit more expensive, they both drive/handle quite similarly, as a daily driver the X3M40i is simply brilliant fir the money.
Had mine for just about 30 months and sold it last October. I only did 7500 miles in it, due to Covid, and traded in for a X3M LCI. Great car for the price, and did a little coding to change the ambient colours. I did get it remapped with a Bootmod3 which made it a little fruity.
I bought my 2018 X5 M Sport last year and have experienced the EXACT same issues with it as you described -- randomly picking up slow punctures and I manage to open my rear tailgate about 3x a week at work. Otherwise, love the thing!!
My Z4 with the same size screen is full screen on Apple Car Play so may be a settings thing as I can’t imagine they are using different systems across the range.
I had an 840i brand new for a few months - lovely car, nice place to be, huge fuel tank (although huge expense to fill it up). It just wasn't very interesting or fun and I've had other German cars that had more personality, so recently sold it
Sam, I have the M40d, the key thing is annoying but you can get a Faraday Pouch which will prevent any mishaps with the tailgate. I had an F15 X5 where that happened all the time. Looking forward to seeing what the next Daily is 😀
On my x4 2022 theirs a setting inside the menu that you can change to only allow the tailgate to open if the cars unlocked. This was after I had the same issue, haven’t had it since :)
My S6 has been in the shop for 3 weeks here in US. I've had a new q5 s-line on rental from the dealer and I've LOVED it. In America, that competes with the X3 M40i maybe I should test drive one. Thinking about getting it for my wife.

They are going through a controversial period at the moment, but despite the super weird advertisements, exterior designs that make you question what their designers are drinking and strange social media antics, BMW still make great products. I hope car enthusiasts don’t forget that. I’ve never been a big SUV guy, but if I chose to buy one, the X3 is right at the top of my shopping list. Fantastic interior, exterior looks butch, functional infotainment, practical, brilliant. As for the infotainment, it does seem to have one button too many and the design is dated. BMW has such a good voice assistant, they could actually afford to reduce the number of buttons, but still keep a few of course.

Same thing happens to me (on M340d) regarding the tailgate opening randomly. it's really worrying considering I often carry a lot of expensive gear in my car and no idea, that the boot is open. Furthermore have you ever had any trouble reversing at night? The new LED reversing lights are pitiful and you literally cannot see if you have to reverse down a country lane at night or manoeuvre in an unlit drive or car park (which I have to do every day). BMW claim that reversing lights are only to to alert other road users of your impending reverse movement, which is the most preposterous argument I have ever heard. There is clearly a developmental failure on these 2 issues and these need addressing by BMW.

That’s why I use Goodyear runflats. They might not provide the best grip but in and around town are adequate and can be repaired.
