We live in Mexico during the winters and ALways tip, no matter what. The people bend over backwards to make us happy while they struggle raising large families with very little thought for themselves. We finally bought a house in La Paz and after 1 winter we’ve made over 9 real friends which is unheard of in the states for that short time.
During the first 2 years I immigrated to US over 30 years ago, I worked as a housekeeper/houseman in hotels and server in restaurants. I find the housekeeper's job much tougher than you think. You are expected to finish cleaning 16 to 18 rooms daily in average. I am 65, retired and doing a lot of travelling with my wife now. I always remember how tough the housekeeper's job is. I always leave a US $5-$10 tip for our housekeepers in our room each day during our vacation. I also reminded my son to leave a good tip for the hard working housekeepers during his vacations too.
Do you tip the cashier when you pay your tax, and is it 15%?
This needs to stop. Owners of these companies should be paying a better. We are paying their wages while the owners are laughing at us. Stop tipping
@@Andy-gb8sx agreed.
I AGREE!!! We TIP!!! No question!! ….At least for us we stayed in Xcaret Arte swim out, butler service, EXCELLENT …the MEXICAN FOOD, BUFFET was outstanding ❤❤❤ we tipped our VIP pool drinks, buffet table service, house keeping, …the staff was outstanding….Absolutely wonderful!! What I love about XCARET is not the parks the food and privacy! If you don’t want to mingle with the party crowd you don’t have to …the music at swim out was MEXICAN traditional to Pop …room service was delicious…the tv set and connections not so good but we had our iPads. We didn’t go there to watch tv….to enjoy the VIP pool at night …under the stars ✨ OUR swim up was gorgeous….we’re changing to Casa De La Playa, but we have access to all the properties of XCARET
I am so with you, I tip at the all-inclusives that I stay at in Riviera Maya. I tip house keeping, fridge refillers, waiters and waitresses, bartenders. I also bring new unopened toiletries, toothbrushes, toothpaste and even some good clothes that I leave with a note for housekeeping services to distribute amongst themselves or that person keep for themselves. It feels good to help 😊
Y’all are a true blessing,,
read up on being a White Savior. it might make you feel not so 'good' to toss your money.
@@rioricojohn7455 Sorry you feel that way. I do not look down on anyone. We are all equal. I work for my money and save to be able to take a vacation. When I can help or show my appreciation to another human being, I do it. I wish you a happier outlook on humanity, most of us are very kindhearted ❤️
The only thing I’ve heard differently from a friend in the travel business is that we should give gifts directly to the person, because if you leave things in the room after you’ve left (even with a note), housekeepers are required to turn them in for lost and found or may be accused of stealing. She said what she does is give cash tips directly to each person, and leaves a bag of goodies (like you mentioned) with the front desk manager to distribute so there’s no misunderstanding. And I’m with you! Often we’re in Mexico or another country because we’re getting more for our money there, so if allows us to share that benefit with the folks who make our visit so wonderful!
Once again Paul you knock it out of the park. I truly appreciate your videos. I agree with you 💯 %.
We sometimes tip at Palace resorts but usually at the end to our favorite people. And the one or 2 times we get maid service we leave a tip on the bed that is obvious. Palace resorts have a fund that acts as a scholarship for becoming managers, etc. It is a great program and their staff is treated very well. We usually make friends for life at Palace and Hard Rock and talk to them on Facebook. Amazing people for sure!
Great to see you guys and Thanks ! 🙏
Good advice, puts it all in perspective! Thanks
LOVE your channel and content! And I completely agree with you both. Even before I ever stayed at an AI, I lived for almost a year in Puerto Vallarta and got to know quite a few people who worked at the resorts. I also (out of curiosity) looked at the job ads for the resorts to see what the pay was. So when my husband and I stayed at an AI for the first time, I explained to him what wages were. And when he experienced just how wonderful the treatment was that we got, he became adamant (much to my gratitude) that we tip generously. We have ALWAYS had nothing but great experiences at all of the AI’s we’ve stayed and I’d like to think it’s partly because we show how much we appreciate the hard work of the staff.
Agreed. Enjoying your content. Thank you.
Great Video, we choose to tip every time. typically $3 a day for housecleaning, $5 tip to start the day at swim-up bar, and $2 a round $5 at breakfast, lunch, and maybe more for dinner. plus a little something for omelet cook. for a typical trip one week we are talking $200 to $300 and it makes the worker's day and in turn makes our day to show we acknowledge their hard work and sacrifices!
Y’all are good people!!! I agree with you and everything you said 110%.
Paul & Linda - thank you for this great video!!! Really enjoyed it!!!
We always leave tips as well. Especially in Mexico, where we have consistently received exceptional service, over 20+ years. Gratuity -showing gratitude. Kindness in return.
As always great advice. We agree with you 100% on the tipping.
That's very thoughtful Paul & Linda! Most people don't think about the salary of the help. I do the same that you do...plus I feel good about myself for doing tipping😊
Thank you for this video. So many gringos come to Mexico and act like everything should be the way they want it. No thoughts about the workers or anyone else.
Tip them!
Thank you both for your perspective. -San Diego 🇺🇸
Your videos are excellent. Thanks for the tip on tipping!
Thanks for your perspectives. I agree with you on tipping and will be sharing this with some family that's headed to an all-inclusive in Tulum later this year. Thanks to Linda for making an appearance 😁😎. Always great info, take care. ☮️❤️❤️😎
Thks for the info. In fact my son and wife are down by you now at a all inclusive that just opened this last April. I’ll pass this onto him.
I agree that is how we tip in Mexico. Good advice.
Excellent vlog you two! 100% agree 🥰
Glad you enjoyed it!
I've had many wonderful All Inclusive experiences in Mexico and always leave a tip for the various staff. I tip the bartenders, house keepers, wait staff, and others that give great service. I just budget it as part of my vacation cost. It always feels like the right thing to do and is always appreciated by the staff.
“Parents house” that’s awesome! Thanks for the info.
Thank you. I didn't know that. I'm prepared now for the next time I go All Inclusive. Thanks guys! 😊
Happy to help!
Hey, I appreciate you both for making people cognizant of the wages they make in Mexico for those jobs. It helps me understand why I should tip if I can. Thanks!
Very good video guys. Looks like a very nice place...enjoy yourselves
Thank you so much for sharing this great and informative review. This is so helpful! 👍🏻
Agreed , very well said
We follow the same philosophy as you guys. Especially true if we are in our chairs on the beach, and the drinks just keep magically appearing! TIP early and often. 😃
Yes, absolutely.
Great post!
Thanks, Erika. :)
Good job! The people deserve it!
Totally agree with you on this video! They work so hard for do little money
If it says tips are included I don't tip, if the tip is not included than it really isn't an all inclusive, I guess they should call it sort of inclusive. Tipping is an antiquated system that pushes down wages, I would rather pay more and everyone get a fair wage. All this said, if I don't see it says tips included, I do tip, because in those cases I have to pay for a bad employer . I rarely see anyone change their behavior due to a tip.
Wow.
Wow 👏 👏 👏 thanks so much for your kindness
100% agree with you on all points!
Thank you!
You are absulutely right!!!
Hi Paul and Linda, I continue to watch your videos and appreciate the level of clarity that you guys offer. I am eager to know if you guys have come up yet with a definite place to call home in Mexico. I trust that wherever you choose will in fact be a place for us to consider, as it appears we have similar taste and train of thought. We are kind of waiting for our last 2 college kids to be done and soon after make our move. I look forward to hearing from you as well as seeing your next videos. Hasta luego y suerte! Alex
When I would go to my time share in Cabo San Lucas, it's an all-inclusive by choice (you can opt out). I always tipped and did so generously.
Wow thank you so much for sharing this info
This video realy talk alot about you guys
Thank you and god bless you
Thank you For helping and sharing your knowledge
We always tip at an all inclusive. The service is always above and beyond. We will be at Playa Del Carmen in two weeks. Cannot wait!!!
We travel to Cozumel Palace at least once a year, sometimes twice. Not only do we tip the cleaners, the bar staff for every single drink, restaurant staff, dive masters and spa staff. We have separate tip envelopes at the end of the trip for front desk staff, bag/bell boys, vacation planner (books spa, excursions etc). We’re sooo grateful for our vacations and all the staff do for us! Please tip generously!
Thank you, this is very helpful! Asta luego!
Great video
I found your site because I was interested to see how much other people tip when they go to Mexico. We feel the same as you and tip about the same. Heading to Sun Palace soon, woot! We love staying there, one of our fave Palaces.
We tip at all inclusive resourts every time. Even at the buffet restaurants we make sure to leave a tip for the staff. During our trips to Akumal Beach and Wellness Resourt we make a point of also tipping the folks who clean up all the sargassum every morning, these folks make a big difference to our stay in Akumal!
I miss you guys it’s been 11 days gesh you guys are great love seeing Linda
Wow Lynda’s hair looks great!!! We always tip too!!
I agree with your tipping habits. In my opinion, only those who are cheap, once they understand about the wages here, won't tip. And they'll defend their actions to the nines. Your advice is good - Anne
Thanks!
Welcome!
Don't forget the landscapers/gardeners, grounds cleaners, washroom attendants, posters. A little tip.is appreciated and a sign of respect.
Hola nice to see you back in the RUclips world 🥰♥️🙏
You get far better service typically when you tip n its nice to help people earn extra money
I have over 25 years in the hospitality industry
TIP $$$ people will appreciate you N trust me they talking about you in the back haha you decide if what they are saying is nice or bad 😉😉
Cheers J&D from the Yucatan Peninsula Mexico ✌️👫🐶
Luv seeing Linda! She looks like she was ready to head to the pool and got stopped 🤣
we were there at Sun Palace in 2021. loved the place
God bless you two 🙏
Great video. I think you guys do it right. The mexican people work very hard for what they get paid. Most of them deserve the tips. And when you do, they go out of their way to help you out more and more. Thanks for the video, and tip good people. :)
Yes, please tip in Mexico when the staff gives you good service especially in the Riviera Maya where salaries are low and rents and food staples are rising for those that serve you.
How about the owners of the company pay you a decent wage. Why should I have to top up your wage
I tip, & I prefer to tip directly to the person, not including it on check. 😊
We’ve never been to an all inclusive resort, but we are big time cruisers. We always tip the bartender, waiters and room steward extra! We also make sure we spend money in the ports. It’s the right thing to do.
God bless you both for being good tippers. I am grateful for anyone who waits on me especially nowadays!! Too many kids sitting on their ass doing nothing😆
Thank you. I always tell people the same. I hear from many that say tipping is not customary in their home Countries in which my response to that is, you are not in your home Country and in Mexico it IS customary.
They shouldn't be relying on tourists tips though, it's not our fault these companies are paying them terrible wages is it? I know they work long hours and hard but the govt needs to bring in laws for min wages, so blame them.
Paul,it's like you read my mind. We are spending a week in Mexico Mayan Riviera and I have to tell you. No many people tip at all ,but when you tip someone their eyes light up and they are very great fully, so the next time they see you is like you said they take care of you. So fellas just tip your servers, it goes a long way.🍸🍸🍸🍸🏖🏖🏖
My wife and I are getting ready to go to Cancun next month. I was wondering if we should till at all inclusive. Thank you for the information. Yall are awesome!
Im glad i watched this video i had no idea you tip at all in Mexico, we dont tip in Australia!
YES!
Thank you so much for this video. I am quite sure that people who visit really do not have any idea of how low the pay is.
Always tip. It just shows appreciation.
Being generous brings more money to you also.
Most people don’t know this… but the word tips is an acronym
T. To
I. Insure
P. Proper
S. Service
Being from New York we tip everywhere we go But especially more so when we are being taken care of well. Don’t be cheap people pony up 😂
Love when Linda joins you
What these kind of videos show, more than guidelines regarding tipping in an all inclusive hotel, is the cultural differences between different peoples. Most (american) authors of videos regarding tipping think that not tipping it's a problem, and it seems that's the way most americans think about this matter. But, actually tipping or not tipping it's not a problem, it is, ultimately, a choice, as you put it in this video. If you go to this kind of establishments you are absolutely free to tip or not. It is not an obligation, it is not a violation of any rules, and it is certainly not a problem. It is your choice, and you should never feel bad for exercising your freedom.
Thanks for sharing your views on the matter.
Would be interested in hearing how you book your all inclusive resourts from within Mexico. How do you find the deals? Travel sights or direct with the hotels?
Do you have access to better prices as a Mexican resident (whether temporary or permanent)?
Yes how do you do it please?
We use Price Travel....Good deals when booking 6 months before.
@@lisagintrand1070 I highly doubt it, these places are so popular that theyre not worried about mexican tourism. Its like in the states, i doubt youll get a hotel discount when you have a citenzenship from the states.
we ALWAYS tip at an AI, we have found that the servers and all employees work their butts off and we appreciate them so much!!!!
Great points. I agree completely, but I'm American and have always known that we are about the only tippers in Mexico!
Hi Paul, Hi Linda 👋. We always tip at all inclusive. We mostly stay at the Excellence Rivera Myan (near Puerto Morelos) . We highly recommend you try it out. Puts all other all inclusive to shame 😁
Great advice we travel exclusivly to the Dominican Republic but it's the same, all inclusive and they advertise tips included but the saleries are the same. We also go to local stores and using simple math and the exchange rate we found that most basic items cost the same as the USA but thier pay scale is 1/4 to 1/3 ours at best. one group we also tip are the gardeners. The beautiful grounds are because of them! Last point the work schedule in DR. is 2 shifts a day and they work 12 days on and 3 days off, tough life and they couldn't be nicer. We chose to tip as if we were back home.
A small tip changes someone’s life and it does not hurt anyone
Alway, alway tip for superior service. Over the years I have got so many freebies and upgrades because of tipping. But no matter how much you tip nothing will make up for being an entitled jerk.
Yes! Tip! .....before I watched this video... The companies that own these resorts are quite stingy to their employees and they make minimum wage. They make them feel "lucky that they have a job," I find all inclusives are getting a bit expensive in Cabo and maybe in Mexico in general. (My parents were waiters in large hotels in Canada. They raised a family and bought a house with their tips).
I always tip at the all inclusive, and with U.S. money. They seem to appreciate that more and treat us great.
Very interesting video. It makes sense to tip as it is the North American culture and for all inclusive most likely guests have enough money to help a bit more the locals. I prefer in Asia where you receive a great service but where tips are not seen the same way. It is hard to put a money value on a service received and all the clients should be served the same way. It is their job to serve you. It is just a different culture and approach.
I go to Cancun quite a bit and always tip, I have Mexican friends that work in the hotels there, and they explained to me the tipping that the resorts speak of, on a monthly basis they spread out the tips, and based on the job a percentage is given. Also the tips given out include house service to shift managers, so I don't need to tell you which job is on the lower end of the tipping. I usually go for 8 or 9 days and leave the maid service a 20, and at each meal I leave a buck at each sitting.
s it better to tip in USD or pesos?
@@1984RADIO always dollars
Thank you workers!!! Tip them BIG for choosing WORKING instead of handouts
Love it. 110% agree. Love the - "people lose their minds" comment. My experience, they never had one, poor diet and lifestyle, jejeje.
I've not done an all-inclusive. My friends from SoCal love them. But I've mostly traveled Mexico in a different way. Maybe I'll try one of these all-inclusives!
You should. They are super relaxing. It's fun to get pampered from time to time.
We always tip, and Riviera Maya is our favorite place. I’m curious if either of you regret your decision to sell your condo?
Thanks for your informative vlogs!
Salaries align with the cost of living generally so it’s not comparable to the US or Canada where I am. I definitely always tip though quite generously because they deserve it and work hard for their customers
Hi guys, I agree w you on this. I like to tip well bc I enjoy being in Mexico and do want to share my economic good fortune of earning a much higher salary in Toronto. I don't throw money away but I do show respect and appreciation for good service. I don't barter down to last pesos for goods either. I'll ask for a discount and if given gladly pay.
Tipping make us feel good and it makes the receivers feel good too so we tip a lot every chance we gets. That's our personal opinion
I agree with tipping in all of the countries that we visit in the Caribbean. Although we must keep in mind the cost of living as well as not coming off as a gringo flashing all kinds of money around. I was taught how to tip in Mexico by my father-in-law back in the 80s in Ixtapa. He saw me over-tipping some young people at restaurant and called me out saying that I was being arrogant, throwing money around, thinking I was better than the people because I came from another country and had more money. He lived in Ixtapa and was executive manager of a hotel . That's when I found out the meaning of the word gringo. As for the cost of living, we can live in Mexico for around %25 of what it costs in Canada. I may be exaggerating a little to justify my point but you know what i'm talking about. Tipping is closely related to the overall culture and economics. a dollar tip for a drink in Mexico or Cuba will be acceptable. But perhaps not in Bermuda, Bahamas or Barbados. Typically I will tip $5 a day for the person that takes care of our room . I will pre tip the pool bar and lobby barman $5 for the day. Don't worry, they remember a pre-tipper. And I don't have to carry money around with me for the rest of the day. When out and about consider where you are when you tip. In some countries an unused cellphone will go a long ways' a tip. Think about that drawer of old phones.
When I am at an all inclusive in Mexico I will give the bartender at the pool bar $5-10 when I get my first drink and he will go out of his way to serve me all day. I always leave money for the person who cleans my room and waits on me at dinner. For a week at an all inclusive my wife and I probably spend between $150-200 on tipping.
Just returned from Playa del Carmen. Stayed at an all inclusive. We typically tip the maid $5 usd / day. $2./ day for the guy that refills the mini fridge. $2 at the buffet breakfast $5 for lunch and $10 or $15 for dinner.
The bartender would receive $1 / drink. ( note most drinks are made with sugar loaded syrup so we stick to beer and wine).
90% of the money I spend on holidays is in tips. After 12 visits to the Mayan Riviera it's time to see other places.
Have to agree 99% of the staff are great. If you can afford to travel, tip you can actually help out the staff that work so hard for you.
For the house keeper I would leave a daily tip along with a note and little drawing thanking her.
I am so glad that you spoke about this. That’s a lot of work for so little pay. So everybody, live a generous tip because actually they are being exploited.
I tip in all countries unless it’s specifically almost frowned upon such as here in Australia. Maybe UK also. But in all south east Asia minus china. Especially barbers and any kind folk that wait on you and the younger people that put forward an effort.
Agree 100% tip always their wages are pathetic at best and the tips help make it liveable
I am hoping you can explain how it works out for the staff when the brochures state "tips included". How much, if any, do they set aside for the staff, and how is it distributed? I am sure it is a paltry amount and unfairly handed out. Thanks for you informative articles and videos.
