I put a 7-wood in my bag for the '22 golf season and it quickly became my go-to club on Par 5s, long Par 4s, short Par 4s that need precise placement off the tee, and long Par 3s. Whether from the fairway, rough, off the tee, or even from the fairway bunker, my 7-wood quickly became my favorite club! As a +2 handicap, I receive lots of crazy looks when I mention the 7-wood until they see it in action!

I am 63 and play off 9. I now play 4 wood, 7 wood, 9 wood and 11 wood, then on into my irons. I find my contact and trajectory are far more consistent with the lofted woods than it was with the hybrids I used previously, and I can now hit and hold greens from all sorts of distances. The reality for me TRULY is that I’m far more consistent with the 7 wood than I am with a 7 iron, I guess it’s horses for courses. All the woods shocked my mates initially, but the improvement in scoring has been obvious. Don’t be afraid to be different, and do what works.

I have 7 wood and 21 hybrid because they both have different capabilities. Took my 58 out of the bag to make a spot. Many teachers advise the average golfers get rid of the high lofted wedge anyway. I can open up my 54 and make the same shots as my 58. I found myself using the 58 maybe 1, 2 at most times a round. I taught myself to hit those shots with the 54. I also made a spot for an extra hybrid (27) by using 4 wood instead of 3 and 5 wood (I couldn't hit 3w well off the ground anyway. My bag set up is Dr, 4w,7w, 21 hyb, 24 hyb, 27 hyb, 6i, 7i, 8i, 9i, pw, 50, 54, putter. I went into my 2023 fitting expecting and wanting to put a 7wood in the bag but the Hybrids in the g430 are so so good I ended up going with D/3W+/4hi. I hit both the 7 wood and the hybrid and I felt the 7 wood was really easy to hit, very high, and consistent, but it was much harder to work than the hybrid which I was still able to hit high and straight, but could also cut and draw what felt like at will. As someone who likes to visualize shots with curvature I found the hybrid to be a better fit for me. just goes to show that the fittings are invaluable, especially because this new range is NOT cheap!

I have a steep swing, which makes irons easier to hit, for me. "Sweeping" with a wood, 3, 5, 7, whichever, leads to a short slice or a pull hook. Same with most hybrids. It's interesting how different swings work with different clubs. Enjoy the content!

Been playing the taylormade burner bubble since it came out about 27 years ago . From bunkers and thick rough. Upgraded to the callay rogue max and gave the burner to an 82 year old golfer who could not carry the gullies on the par 3s at the ailsa course with his irons. Now he carries the gullies all the time and loves it. Gave a shot of it to another player and he hits it further and straighter than his 3 wood and is now going to buy one.

Very interesting video. I recently just updated my bag and took some notes from LPGA players like Nelly Korda. Nelly, Lydia Ko and other ladies don't even carry 4 irons anymore and instead rely on hybrids or higher lofted woods. There is 100% something to that concept and I think too often amateur golfers let their egos get in the way. While I'm still playing a chunky 4 iron I added a 4 hybrid this year that is basically the same loft but it behaves very different (higher launch, about 10 yards more carry and easy to hit out of the rough). I'm still tinkering with the fairway wood vs Callaway UW and may very likely end up gaming the UW because it carries about the same distance and is just so easy to hit. The game is so much more fun if we just drop the ego.

@@fanfan7848 Probably depends on the individual but in my case I invariably under-hit puts from off the green, especially if the grass is a little fluffy. Using a 7 wood means I don't have to hit the ball much harder than for a normal put and the loft helps to get the ball going even through a few yards of light ruff. Having said that, if I were 10 ft off the green and the grass surface was close to the quality of the green, I would probably use a putter.

It’s such a versatile club, so easy to make different swings with it to hit high soft landing shots from anything 175-215 carry, super useful option if there are trees to get over or hazards to clear into greens. My wood game isn't bad either, so 7-wood has indeed been on my list of things to add to the bag, especially with the in-the-rough benefits. Around the green is always something I forget to think about when my wedge game is off, and I appreciate your reminder. Love what you do, Mark

I play 4 iron down because I just seem to hit the irons more consistently...
I do however have a 28° hybrid that gets used very rarely from those fluffy rough lies, or when I'm in trouble from a bad drive and need to easily move the ball forwards.

Dropped out my epic 3 hybrid for an epic max Heavenwood two weeks ago. The Heavenwood is so easy to hit it's just point and shoot which is great for my confidence hitting long shots into the green. Try it.

Mark, what are your thoughts on having a 21deg 7 wood in a bag already with a 19deg 3H and 21deg 4H? Does the added handle length simply make it a replacement for the 3H? Sometimes i do struggle to get the 3H up high enough.

Yes please Mark, i'm the same as Shaun, 19deg 3H and 22deg 4H, 5I below.
I do have a gap above the 3H straight to Driver, maybe a 3W needed, or maybe a 7W.
      I have wood.

I play an original Taylormade VSteel 5W that I’ve had for almost 20 years. It’s been reshafted with an Atmos stiff flex. Shaft is tipped and cut to 7W specs. I like the extra stiffness for control.

    I'm using both, 7w 21degree and hybrids(18 and 24)
I can hit it far enough with irons but I find the hybrids and 7w give me better options and odds of success depending on wind and lie.
18degree hybrid and 7w (within 10 yards or so) cover same distance roughly, but how they land and stop are very different.

I don't use a 7 wood (yet) but I've gone down the route of replacing my 5 and 6 irons, which I never felt comfortable with and maybe only hit well 6 times out of 10, and replaced them with 24 and 28 degree hybrids and I am hitting these shots well 8 times out of 10 and with the extra height they are staying on the greens. Just so much easier to hit and so much more confident over the ball which, at the end of the day, is everything. Playing my best golf ever at the moment. Long may it last.

7 wood is fantastic. I ended up with a hybrid at 21*. And if you gave me the 220yd in with water short, id either hit 3 wood (safely going long, or a short if miss hit) or just lay up safe. Every ball ive ever played, sinks in a lake.

I now have a Stealth 6 rescue which is probably the nearest thing in modern clubs !

Always have loved fairway woods. Currently carry both a 3w and a 5w. I then move to a 21 degree hybrid, which is definitely a left miss club. Thinking about adding a 7w in its place. I still do as I was taught and load my bag weather dependent. Rainy, windy, humid, dry etc. The 7w intrigues me and I am for sure hitting the Sim before the season begins.

7 Wood could be a winner in so many people's setups. One way to possibly split the difference and give yourself more options: a 19º 5W cranked up to 20º or 20.5º. If you're playing a course where you need that same 7 wood type shot, grips down a half inch to replicate the launch and flight of the 7 wood. Play with regular grip for a little more distance. Crank it back to 19º if the course presents that shot more often?

Mizuno doesn't have a 7w/4w combo 😞 Used to love my Steelhead III 7W as a rescue-type club.
    Currently experimenting with
    4i - 200 summer. "Driving iron" (JPX 921 HM!)
4H - 185-190. Great on half shots, good height. Best from slightly fluffy lies
5W - Even higher, no longer but needs a full swing and cleaner lie
    3W - lower, 210 with best

On a nice sunny day with firm fairways I enjoyed the 2 iron but just felt unless conditions were like that, hybrid was more versatile. I'm definitely warming to to idea of a 5 wood though, just for more confidence off the tee.
