I remember when this first came on RUclips way before dm came out. I thought it was so badass seeing them getting back to their roots after st anger I was so pumped for the album. I remember when it was "the new song" before it ended up becoming end of the line and all nightmare long. I thought this song was and still is badass.

As a massive Metallica fan, they should've released this along with Suicide and Redemption and My Apocalypse on an EP.
I think this track is just better arranged than the parts that it was reused on
When I hear End of the Line's intro, I always anticipate that key change where the New Song riff plays. The End of the Line's riff remains in same key as intro, so you could say it flows better... But to me, it's doesn't feel as satisfying as sliding up into the New Song riff.

After Kull Am All they went mixed on their sounds making complex songs. One Being a premier example of that soft and heavy. Being pure thrash hasn't never been thier only sound.

This actually sounds better then “the end of the line”.
End of the Line is the one song from Death Magnetic I don’t care for, replace it with this and I would like the entire album!
I remember when I first heard thinking it sounded like St. Anger, but better - more informed by classic Metallica. And as the track unfurled I felt such a joy that they had found their muse again and were seemingly healthier. Then this specific track didn’t end up on Death Magnetic. When I listen to it now I think of it as “Riffs Magnetic,” almost a showcase for all their ideas going into the album more than a cohesive song. Still a cranking track. The double bass work is awesome!
It sounds absolutely nothing like St Anger
This song is the precursor not to just Death Magnetic/Beyond Magnetic but also to Hardwired and especially 72 Seasons.

When I heard this initially, I though this was the next album. But also, they went and polished it and Death Magnetic was born. I was hoping for a RAW album with songs like this one. Would of been nice had Metallica did that.
Dm was pretty good in its own right. I do like this alot but the record ended up being pretty good too.

Yea they were quite epic. This was 2 years before dm even came out I remember it well. I was so pumped for a new thrash Metallica album I called it the modern justice when it came out. Even had a white cover and the old logo lol

one thing this song has that I do think was a good part of St Anger was a bit or rawness, and the lower tuning. I think they could try being a bit heavier and edgier like that st anger esque riff that was after the end of the line riff. That's an awesome riff

For anyone needing to know, the opening riffs are from The End Of The Lind from the Death Magnetic album of 2008! I'm very familiar with the album because I immediately started learning how to play the majority of the rhythm guitar parts from it, I absolutely love the song and several others on the album, but I'm not thrilled with this demo, just gotta say it, glad they didn't record this version!
I love it when they use Les Pauls. Especially that old "greeny" that Kirk got from Gary Moore.❤☺👍

I like this song much more than the two songs where the riffs from this one went. This song is solid, everything fits together here, the riffs are homogeneous. It was only necessary to finish the vocal line here, that's all for the verses, and the song is ready.And it could really be one of the heaviest metallica songs.
I can imagine how cool it would be in the studio version.
And all these permutations of them led to the fact that the album came out of most of the songs consisting simply of their different pieces that do not combine with each other.
3:45 That heavy bouncing riff makes me wish Metallica wrote down-tuned riffs more often. E Standard is nice for a crisp thrashy sound, but that heavy groove feels so good.

Might also be just leftovers from St.Anger sessions. There was a ton of material left out of the record and some said that the presidio stuff was quite near the blackalbum/AJFA stuff
Fun Fact: This Song is in Drop C. I thought it was Either Drop Db or Drop D, Since Death Magnetic had "All Nightmare Long" in Drop D. I believe the Demo was Drop Db though.

if i didn't listen to death magnetic before, this would've been the most jam packed metallica i've ever heard. energy changes, tempo changes, groove changes, amazing riffs... but now it just sounds like a medley from a tribute band. not complaining though, it's a lot more fun to listen to than i imagined!

It's not bad. I really am a "first four-ist". They had amazing genre-defining albums in KEA, RTL, MOP, and AJFA. Then they also released some other albums that some people like. I guess. The first four are all I ever listen to. Granted, I remember going down to the music store as a kid to buy those first four albums on cassette when they came out. Good memories.
Absolutely! I’m a fan of all their albums, especially …AJFA for its dabbles with progressive metal. I understand not everybody is a fan of their later work, and that’s okay. What matters is we’re united to all show our support for the band. \m/

Me as well. I lost all interest after AJFA. I was one of those in a high school (1986-1990) where me and only about four other guys even knew who these guys were. I was a total fanatic back in the mid 80s. I was big into them from ‘84-89 Then they became popular and well known, and my exclusivity was lost. My interest went downhill from there.
I just can't listen to Hetfield's singing much anymore. It's all been there done that to me.
