- Today, Austin uses Ben Thompson's (@Stratechery) "Mobile Hierarchy of Needs" to unpack Apple's and Meta's approaches to the spatial computing market, working to explain why Meta just announced that they're licensing Horizon OS and opening up Quest's App Store.

Thank you for actually having these thoughtful conversations about this technology, a lot is changing quickly and I think in hindsight these conversations will have been necessary to making sense of what is likely to play out over the next decade or two.
thank you for listening in & being a part of them!
I really appreciate it when you add classical music to your videos.

Yeah, I’m thinking it’s going higher and higher 😎
Who would of ever though Zuck having to defend a product of his compared to Apple when he launched Facebook in 2004! 🤯
scrappy kids making a small product in their home and then growing into behemoths taking on other behemoths is the entire computer industry in a nutshell!
Am glad Iam already subscribed when I checked whilest those eggs where frying😂

Amazing diagram! I can think more clearly about these sorts of companies and their decision making now . One question that comes to mind is why Apple is able to charge such a premium on their hardware/OS, while Meta tried and failed with the quest pro. I suspect it might be because Meta knows their service is what will ultimately have the greatest profit margins so they aren’t incentivized to create hardware/OS that is inherently as desirable as Apple. I bet if Apple TV somehow started making more profit than iPhones/macs Apple would be making the Vision Pro out of plastic too!
I also think “services” is further split into two - 1) direct payment or subscription and 2) ad supported ones.
It might seem like splitting hairs here, but it substantially positions the need for hyper scale from Metas perspective.
agreed. the services tier is actually extremely broad, and can even encompass “free” services (e.g. the web) - but you’re right, the nature of how money is made in each tier completely changes how companies/products structure themselves in each
hi thanks again for the quality videos in form and inform xx

A bit out of the blie buy what do you think of the Rabbit r1 device?
i don’t have the device but i generally think the AI product category will be consumed by phones. i do love Teenage Engineering though, and Rabbit’s UI whimsy!
