    I agree with your take on irresponsible use (and, in many ways, existence) of AI art, but i also think the exploitative ugliness of your typical deepfake-y AI is exactly why they've decided to use it for this MV, since it expresses oppression so viscerally, both looking and feeling the opposite of how genuine artistic expression is supposed to be. the distressing aesthetic whiplash works really with it for the modern viewer. still, of course, questioning the ethics of using it is valid and probably will be for a long time.

    • @florastel
      @florastel  Месяц назад +8

      Wow, that is a perspective that I completely missed, but you're totally right!
      Really interesting to think about it as a contrast of the beauty of creativity (the butterflies, spirals and artful backgrounds) and then the harsh cold creation of a machine (through the creepy uncanny AI pictures). This would be an interesting way of critiquing AI, although I feel like critiquing it by using it is kind of a weird way to go about it lol ^^

    • @dirty_chanterelle
      @dirty_chanterelle Месяц назад +1

      @@florastel yeah, it's probably not a direct AI critique, but more of an expression of artistic isolation and the general feeling of inability to be/become yourself, which has to be one of the main themes here, just like you said in the video. at the very least, here AI is used as simply one of the many smaller instruments to convey a bunch of complex ideas and i can appreciate that. a surprising amount of artists, both old and young, have been using the AI artists/AI work in a much more hamfisted way, as if the novelty of it is "good enough" artistically, which is something i just can't agree with even outside of the ethics of it in almost any case so far.
      anyway, sorry for yapping, i but i'll also add that i really enjoy how your videos have this balanced/respectful theorizing as a way of noticing and appreciating potential themes and ideas, instead of forcing your perspective and filling the "artistic vacuum" that's obviously has been left in there on purpose for our imaginations to go wild with it and interact with its vagueness. thank you for enriching my experience!

    • @florastel
      @florastel  Месяц назад +2

      Yeah, I do agree with you. This MV feels less like it was just used to save time and more so to show of some concepts that are difficult to grasp... but tbh I'm just really over the whole AI thing after recent events (even Coca Cola using AI for their commercial, as if they didn't have the budget to actually let someone create their spot TT). So I might have been a little to biased about it lol ^^
      Also thank you so much! I really try to do my analysis unbiased and balanced, because the artists put so much work into something I do want to try to understand their messaging (and I've definitely gotten better at this compared to some of my earlier videos lol), but I do have to say that Yves MVs this far have been the most difficult to grasp and I kind of like it that way, haha.
      Like it gives you the opportunity to think in so many different ways, looking at the MV in different perspectives, that it just really feels like Yves wants to encourage us to interact a little deeper with the MVs and I love that! ^^

      @@florastel i really can't blame you, that coke commercial is so off-putting haha
      yeah, i'm really happy how brave the post-loona works have been with symbolism and allegory. with this Yves one, on top of it being just so filled with ideas, i didn't expect the "loop - seashell - mosquito coil" metaphor to feel this touching and reassuring, personally. it ended up reminding me of Peter Gabriel's work a bunch in that way, which is honestly amazing.

    There isn't a purple circle to complete an OEC reference, but there is an upside down flower in the scene with Yves holding up a butterfly in a storm. I don't think any other loona member was associated with upside down other than Choerry. (Also, loonaverse connects Hyunjin, Choerry and GoWon so it makes sense to also see a butterfly together with the two flowers)

    • @florastel
      @florastel  Месяц назад +3

      Wooow, I didn't catch that at all! ^^
      But you could be right about that, maybe they didn't want to make it that obvious of a reference and so they hid the reference to Choerry (just like Choerry hids herself in the pre-debut era MVs)!

      In a way they could have the same messaging, like the deer as a symbol for the goddesses burning, since the old goddess (artemis) is burned to create the new god (ARTMS) or something like that.🤔

    Ive been waiting for your analysis video for Yves' new MV since it came out! Worth the wait! 🎉❤
    I would say that I dont agree with your perspective of the use of AI in the Kpop industry... hear me out 🙏🏽
    In general, AI is a tool. Its a technological advancement that we use to make our lives easier. Like GPS, computers and the internet. Or CGI, marketing algorithms, sound mixing and satellite TV to broadcast Kpop weekly music shows.
    Its up to the creator on how they use such tools. Those individuals who use it for horrible things like Deepfakes, Copycat Art or catfishing - they put a blemish on AI. AI is used for almost everything in everyday life. RUclips wouldnt exist if it wasnt for AI. Kpop is an evolving industry, it would make sense for them to use AI. For good though. 🤞🏽
    Also, Paix Per Mil is a small entertainment company and using a real persons photo or licensed image cost a good amount of money....
    I dont think Yves' team was going for easy art over handmade/drawn art - it feels like Yves wants to send a message using AI art. Not immediately get brownie points for using a fake image that looks so good that people overlook the blatant use of AI.
    Yves did a great job in this comeback. I'm proud of her journey, her personal direction and involvement in her art. Im looking forward to where she goes next in her music and im happy to see her company support her. Unlike some other places that are not worth mentioning.
    Congrats on your Manga ❤ I love the LOONA artwork in your videos and wish you the best in your art career! Thank you for the video.

      on a technical level I would agree with you that Yves is not really overdoing it, but I just can't think of AI as "just another new technology" when we look at the impact that it has.
      Outside of problems that hurt the idols themselves like the fake AI p0 rn made with idols faces, that even the Loona members got harassed with, and the fact that in the future we can just generate the idols doing anything without their permission at all (like making them sing songs or say things that they didn't, which also makes it harder for fans to know what is real and what isn't), there also are general downsides that are less focused on, but are still so so important.
      AI is currently producing up to 3.7% of global greenhouse gases, and AI isn't even used in every day life by everyone currently, so we can expect that this number keeps on going up by a lot.
      As a reference, cars and vans account for around 10 percent globally, so as of now AI has already reached 37% of the emissions that ALL THE CARS & VANS produce AROUND THE WORLD.
      And we already hit the 1.5 degree climate target (that was set as the maximum that the climate degree should go up), meaning that the currently ongoing heat extremes, droughts, heavy rainfalls, hurricanes and so on are going to get increasingly worse, if we continue to put the needs of our technology over the health of our world.
      Other then that we can already see that the demand for "perfect idols" pushes the industry to go for more so artificial idols. From fictional idols like K/DA, SUPERKIND (that allegedly used the faces of real idols for references) or MAVE that still use the voices of real people to Naevis, who is completely made up.
      I feel like the demand of idols could shift in the current climate, meaning that we will see less and less real art and artists, so being ok with it now, because it's not that bad, just opens up the door to completely artificial idols in the future, because companies see that we don't really mind that much. And we know that a lot of idols are already treated badly, so I don't have any doubt that in the future the companies could just exchange their real idols with fake once that do not complain, that do not need breaks or food and so on.
      All in all I don't really mind the use of AI in this MV to much, I just feel like if we normalize the use of AI the downsides are going to be soo much worse then any upside would ever be. And I do want Yves and other idols to keep the rights to themselves and to not get exchanged with AI.
      Art should be made by artists that feel something and want to show this to us, not by machines that calculate the average song, music video and idol, to give us the most mediocre “art” and only benefits big cooperations.
      And thanks for the complement! ^^

      You brought up some interesting points too.
      But I don't know if you wanted to have a long discussion about it so I just want to say thank you for your response and I respect your perspective on AI in the Kpop industry. I think art should come from artists, authentically.
      That was part of the reason I stopped watching Cdramas for a few years now.

      I didn't know that Cdramas were getting so bad, I only see clips every once in a while and I'm always flabbergasted at some of the writing lol
      It can sometimes feel like satire almost like comedy writing that makes fun about the people writing these very much constructed stereotypical storylines... but then you realize that it's meant in a serious way lol

      @@florastel Yeah sorry it took a while to reply back but I've just been hired at a nonprofit org I've been interviewing for and things have been hectic but good in the past few days 😆🥳
      The Cdramas thing has been a personal issue of mine since 2019 when the Mainland Govt made new TV & Radio regulations that took the art out of the entertainment industry - mostly recognizable through Cdramas. The writing is bad bcuz it's national propaganda and that's the opposite of art. Art is supposed to be open to interpretation and propaganda only wants the viewer to have one interpretation only.
      I can't stand by that, so I stopped watching Cdramas from the Mainland for a few years now.
      With Kpop and how things have evolved for the worst and for the best - there's so much going on that sometimes it doesn't surprise me anymore. It just makes me sad.
      The abuse of Kpop Idols isnt a new topic, it just gets more updates as time goes by.
      I actually want to work in HR and I've recently heard the verdict from the New Jeans case on workplace harassment and apparently Kpop Idols are contract workers so they won't have the same protection as a salary or hourly worker. That's messed up.
      You mentioned AI contributing to more greenhouse gases in our atmosphere and that reminds me of fashion brands. Luxury brands and fast fashion brands that help pollute our Earth and endorse less than savory workplace practices to source/make/distribute their products. Add on the international influence of Kpop Idols as Brand Ambassadors - things get so much worse than they already are. I hate to see it in the long run. Yes, I'm happy that the idols are making good money from doing their job, I just dislike their image and fame being used to encourage people that can't really afford to buy these luxury brands to buy them and lead to more overconsumption.
      I've worked in retail before, and that was a Nightmare within itself but fast fashion websites that make non-biodegradable knocks off don't help the planet either...
      Fashion is art and a form of self expression, I understand that. I just missed the days of Kpop before idols were not the models of fashion brands that don't help our climate crisis.
      The "perfect idols" part of your response had me confused because I know people want an idol to be well-rounded when it comes to talent but that's too much to ask for in this industry where so many reality competition shows let some trainers debut that aren't highly skilled in any area other than visual or public opinion. I won't say names but iykyk
      I like the AI Kpop Idols concept only because talented people can sing and dance like Kpop Idols but not have to worry about getting saesang fans, being cyber bullied for their looks or worry about their families privacy/safety being threatened.
      The Entertainment Industry can be scary, Kpop included.
      Unless the AI Idols are taking the jobs of real Kpop Idols (and I never liked the idea of calling them Idols because it makes them sound like something other than human and Kpop Idols are humans that shouldn't be put on a pedestal or be considered beneath other humans when they make human mistakes or just exist as humans), I can imagine some people will not like the AI Idols for long.
      Yes, some fans want a real human with a perfect CGI looking face but I don't think they'll absolutely love a non-human with a human like face. It's very uncanny valley.

    • @florastel
      @florastel  Месяц назад +1

      It's really interesting to get your insides on these situations! Some of this I didn't know, but it's really interesting and eye opening. ^^
      I feel like the luxury ambassador idols are also in a difficult situation, because on one hand they (in most cases) like their fans, but at the same time they know that if they promote something their fans will want to buy this product. This could really weigh on an idols mind.
      Thinking about the New Jeans members for example, they themselves are really young and probably wouldn't be able to afford these brands products if they were just middle schoolers themselves, so maybe it feels a little wrong to then see young people in financial struggles that you promote these items to, when at the same time you would much rather tell them to spent their money more wisely. Idk, but I feel like companies should be more aware of their fan base and their needs and wants (like New Jeans would be perfect for a smaller brand that caters more so to younger people with cheaper products), but I understand that in a capitalist system they might be insensitivity to not think about it this way.
      About the "perfect idol" thing, I 100% understand what you mean, because anytime I see some clips of the top 10 fan votes I'm always shocked how much they prefer looks over talent! TT
      But I meant that more so like any and every time an Idol doesn't give 100% (because they are sick for example) they immediately get hated on. Not being able to sing a high note live or not being able to dance part of the choreography because of an injury. It goes as far as Idols getting hate for gaining and loosing weight, something that should have absolutely nothing to do with their talent and status as an Idol.
      So I'm just worried that in the future companies will not want to take risks (thinking about the riize situation for example, bc of the scandal they are doomed if they keep seunghan as part of the group, but they are also doomed if they throw him out, there are people on both sides that would not buy their products anymore depending on SM's decision) and so they might come to the conclusion of just creating a perfect idol (virtual idol) in the long run. An idol that can not say anything controversial (because they have no mind of their own or opinions) or be to skinny/thick, to ugly, to short and so on and can not get into dating scandals.
      But I do agree with you that real idols with digital faces would be a really good idea! Keeping your private life and work life separate would definitely solve a lot of current Idols problems aside form all of the hate some Idols get for just looking the way that they do (some “fans” really are just mean to be mean).
      So I really liked K/DA because of this concept, and the company that worked on the K/DA Mvs animations, outfits and concepts were able to get a deal for an animated series (Arcane) because of their phenomenal work on these MVS, so there are a lot of pros in this case! Both sides on the creativity spectrum, so Idols and then the people creating the digital models can really benefit from this! ^^
