You make an excellent point about the power and influence that comes with having a platform. The contradiction of the films message in a fantasy context will not translate for the public if the parallel is not drawn to our word.

Kia ora, wanted to say I totally agree with your view point in this video. I did however also want to add for those comments people are making regarding the use of māori culture in the movie. I've lived in Aotearoa new Zealand for 20 years now, have grown up here. I only know by word of mouth but it was said that Jim had actually gone to the local iwi in wellington to ask permission to use the māori culture as inspiration, this and also knowing that a few māori people worked on the film and acted in it. I myself am not māori, I can't speak for the people, all I can say is that from my understanding māori people were present in the creation and filming of the movie. I do imagine it will be a devided opinion on the matter but it appears that James did try to honour the māori culture, at least to some degree. Like I said though, I can't speak for māori people, if they find this use of their culture to be disrespectful they are the ones we should listen to. Kia kaha ❤️

All cetaceans are incredibly intelligent animals with complex social structures and even cultures that vary from pod to pod (to the point that captive cetaceans, especially orcas, can struggle to socialize with other whales when in captivity together). They should never, ever be kept in captivity. I hope for a day when all performing cetaceans can be retired to sea sanctuaries where they can live semi-normal lives.

I always believed that a true merfolk protects and defends the Oceans and their dwellers. My passion for mermaids, the oceans and languages has lead me to take action. I am part of the zero waste movement. I specialized my translation skills in scientific fields including marine biology. I use my small mermaid voice to bring awareness. And ultimately, I hope to do a doctorate in interspecies translation. I want to work with Haifa University on their project about translation and whale languages. I think we need to protect our oceans. And I think I am doing my share. I would like to see more of your activism. 🧜🏼‍♀️🌊🐬🐋🐟🐠🐡🦈🐙🐚🦀🦞🦐🦑

I am really worried this is the kind of thing people think I want to do. I want to be an animal trainer for movies and shows. I want to do conservation shows. not this. I want to talk to people. I want to give animals that can't survive in the wild a chance to live a comfortable life. I want to let people know how beautiful these creatures are and what is happening to them in this world and how to protect them.

He could've researched further before agreeing to that appearance. A show that big had to have been advertised all over the internet. There's no way he would not have known about the dolphin show. He also could have said things to try and explain why they should end the dolphin shows. You can be polite and still speak up without being confrontational.

I had mixed feelings going out of the cinema. The dolphin exploitation fiasco only gives it another layer. When I saw the water na'avi I was at the same time enchanted by the design, but also slightly uncomfortable at the film drawing from real life cultures, but making them fantasy and I wondered: how much of the film profits (if any) went to the people from the cultures Cameron took inspiration from...

I was absolutely disgusted by their appearance there at the dolphin show. It would be like making a vegan movie and launching at a giant meat bbq. It was just so surprising. And the fact that as you say there has been basically no response from him... makes me think he really is about profiting from what seems 'popular', in this case conservation, but actually has no real message to share. I get no one's perfect, and maybe he was 'trying to be sarcastic', but if so then why no follow up?. Why is he not using this opportunity to educate about captivity, and the horrors of what the realities of that are. I think you did a great job of putting this together in a way that it is accessible to others. I def won't be seeing this movie or giving any money or intention to what seems to be another hypocritical big block buster. I think we met many moons ago protesting at the Vancouver Aquarium... so I am with you on this. I'm not expecting anything from James Cameron , but I certainly appreciate that you are using your platform to educate.

I mean, I get we don’t know what’s going on in this dude’s personal life, but it’s not that hard to idk leave a tweet or something explaining the situation, or owning up to mistakes. Or maybe he’s like my nan and he’s too stubborn to admit when he’s wrong. I don’t think it’s worth missing out on the movie though, he’s not that corrupt.

@@Fluffadoodle Actually this is a slippery slope as someone who had a parrot for almost 10 years and after she died did extensive research only to determine that parrots should not be for everyone. Especially with people who clip their wings, keep them in tiny cages with no stimulation, no sunlight, no air filtration, etc. I could go on, but I will ask that we actually keep this out of the comment section because it has little to do with the message of my video as I was strictly talking about cetaceans. Thanks!

I'm not watching the film then if they can't support the dolphins to be free from captivity and human entertainment, and slaughter. My heart ❤️ 💙 💜 is broken for the abuse, killing, slaughter, of all God's precious living creations. I stand for clean oceans. I stopped eating fish and sea creatures because of the pollution, mercury content, and the way they are dredging the Ocean to get the sea creatures and marine life that is destroying the sea bed.

Besides the really colonist views and expression of indigenous people, he also super sexualized his made up race on purpose which I think adds a whole layer of weird sexual exploitation. He even asked male members of crew how bangable the people he made up were, and took advise on makin them even more sexually appealing (to the male gaze mostly too)
Also I think he missed the point of his own film. Like what a fucked up way to exploit animals and then in his movie its all "respect nature"
Also as someone who lives next to SeaWorld thy don't treat animals with any respect. They set off fireworks weekly which trigger all the animals in my neighborhood. Can't imagine what the tank animals experice. Why can't we support aquariums and animal sanctuaries? Why must we force intelligent animals to work???
Edit: just want to mention if you visit San diego skip SeaWorld and go to the birch aquarium. They have made really amazing breakthroughs and treat their animals with a lot of respect. They are the only place to have successfully breed the rare and endangered weedy sea dragon!
