    Very informative video EMF! There are alot of people out there that think they know everything just because they read this or that on the internet, and you do a very good job of explaining how things really are in the industry. The real deal. I'm waiting for you to do a tech stuff Tuesday about Rockville's recent videos on their K-9 subs. They sure caught alot of smack, especially the one where they blew a Sundown SA-12, and I have to admit, I was one of the many bashing them on it and even though I hate to do that, in a case like that it needs to be done because you have alot of youngsters out there trying to decide what subs to buy and unfortunately they believe alot of what they see or hear on the net whether it be true or not.

      @@EMFAudio How do you know select how many layers to add for a spider? Or is it strictly based on trial and error? I'm going to attempt to build my first subwoofer for a hobby project so I very new to this. I've watched a ton of you videos and I really appreciate how honest and informative they are! If it helps at all (from what I've watched it probably doesn't but figured it can't hurt to mention.) I'm using a soundstream tarantula t5-152 motor and frame for the build. I would be very thankful for any advice on spider selection and cone selection. I already have a coil picked out and I didn't have very many options since the gap is only 5mm wide. Would you err on the side of closer to the top plate or closer to the center pole when trying to locate a replacement coil for a random subwoofer? For example, if you had a center pole that was 2.5 diameter, top plate the was a 3" diameter hole, but the voice coils available were either going to be tighter towards ID or OD with nothing in the middle....which would you choose?

    • @EMFAudio
      @EMFAudio  5 лет назад +1

      From a performance standpoint there shouldn't be a variance, from a reliability standpoint closer to the pole would prevent the coil rubbing and shorting.

    • @EMFAudio
      @EMFAudio  5 лет назад +1

      It could be made, but why? Those things are like $80 new, it would cost more to ship it back and forth than it would to buy a new one. They're throw away subs, that's why Alpine doesn't have them.

    If you were to use too thick of a surround and a spider with too thick of ridges will the coil end up smacking against the back plate of the subwoofer

    • @EMFAudio
      @EMFAudio  4 года назад

      If you used too thick it wouldn't move at all. Thicker doesn't necessarily mean stiffer either. I'm assuming you're meaning too stiff of surround and too stiff of spiders in which case it will move less by comparison, so it wouldn't smack the back plate, if that was possible to start with.

  • @jutin2001
    @jutin2001 5 лет назад

    So how much clearance should there be between the inside diameter of the coil and the outside diameter of the pole piece, and same question as to outside of coil and inside of top plate? If the coil fits without scraping is it fine? Or is there a certain gap you should be aiming for? Just wondering because I have done a couple throw together recones with cheap soft parts, and although both have turned out basically how I was hoping, I wasn't 100% sure, so just ordered something that I knew would at least fit without scraping. I enjoy the building part a lot, just not real sure on some of the parts, whether or not I could have went with something that fit better. And this video has shown a couple of the things I had questions about. So thanks for that. I have a couple motors laying around that I am thinking of building some cheap 8's out of, just so I can do it again.

    • @EMFAudio
      @EMFAudio  5 лет назад +1

      There isn't a standard for those gaps, but there are design philosophies and considerations. If a motor is too strong for the application you'd have a smaller coil with a larger gap, if you need all the motor force it has to offer you'd have tighter gaps. But, with tight gaps you can still rub from slight rocking and the more Xmax it has the more prone it is to rocking. A heavier coil is also more prone to rocking. I could go on and on about when to do what and why but the short answer is there isn't a set goal.

      More surface area to push air I think. How much cereal can you serve on a plate vs a bowl?

    • @EMFAudio
      @EMFAudio  5 лет назад +1

      Rigidity is a factor, but a deeper cone is also needed for high excursion so the spider doesn't hit the cone, unless you just have a giant gap between the spider and cone which may result in other issues.

    • @EMFAudio
      @EMFAudio  5 лет назад +1

    • @EMFAudio
      @EMFAudio  5 лет назад

      I go with the biggest needed, not the biggest that fits. Having excessive surround is BAD for performance if it's not necessary, like being limited by the coil or spiders. First you need to know the limits of your coil and spider.

And for the cone it has a huge roll surround with a .4 height difference between both cones stock one being 2 inches deep. Ik i will not reach the max excursion do to the motor limits. Okay so I do understand that all soft parts are not universal and also that each motor has it's limitations but my question is what would be the differences of an upgraded subwoofer for example I bought a set of sundown x12v2's that were upgraded by Dave Leib designs and unfortunately I do not know a whole lot about them but he added like half an inch spacers between the motor and the basket or shortening ring so I assume he used a taller coil?!? Either way I have not owned a standard pair of the x12's but man do these upgraded ones really get down, I have two Skar Skv13500.1's strapped on them at 1ohm each amp for a 2ohm final and the subs are dual 2's wired up to 4 then back down to a 2ohm final.... Oddly they do not do well with higher freq's but mannn do they seriously hammer the lows!

      There should be a spacer in there anyway. It probably has an NSv2 coil in it, which is longer but also uses a larger gauge wire on the windings. The whole doesn't do higher notes but does play lows thing is basically how X's sound.

    What happens if the voice coil smacks the back plate of the subwoofer

    • @EMFAudio
      @EMFAudio  4 года назад

      That depends how hard it hits. Tapping lightly a few times may just dent the former. A hard smack and deform the former and lock it up, or shift the coil.

    Why would it not be possible to use a 12 inch cone on a 15 inch subwoofer basket with a coil that is designed to fit in a 15 inch subwoofer motor.

      We aren't so juvenile we have to rig testing blowing up other brands to try to make our shortcomings look better. We educate, and there will be a lot of educating happening Tuesday.

    Where do I find surrounds for my subs they are the only thing that are messed up they are incriminator audio death penilty 12s

    • @EMFAudio
      @EMFAudio  5 лет назад

      Search the internet, that isn't a problem we have to deal with. We buy cones/surrounds together and we never have to replace just surrounds.

      @@EMFAudio I've been looking for two years lol. I have them silconed up for the mean time. Incriminator wants like 400 bucks for a set of drop ins. Subs work great but look like poo.

    That cone has a 3” voice coil ID cone why not cut it out to match the 4” voice coil then there should be enough room for cone and spider to lay flat on each other

    • @EMFAudio
      @EMFAudio  5 лет назад +1

      You could, but that won't gaurentee a proper fit. Also, note I said to ignore the coil size difference, the visuals were for the point not that specific build.

      Some parts we get from various vendors, parts for production stuff we get directly from the manufacturer of those parts.

    Sub with a 3" coil original coil ID is 76.2mm. What is the difference in using coils with a different ID? Instead of 76.2mm could a coil that is 76.66mm or 76.45mm still be used and perform the same? Also OD isn't an issue with any of those. Can anyone help? Don't want to order the wrong coil. Thanks
