@@sarahconner9433 thanks. I’ve always loved that sub. First top tier sub I’ve seen in person with a Neo Magnetic motor structure. Seen you in Barevids live today as well fellow amp repair friend.

Mr Lester, Thank you!! Ive watched your old Subwoofer recone video tons of times while learning how to build subs for myself and my buddies. Tons of knowledge that has helped me out tremendously.....thank you. This video was another winner in the subwoofer builder encyclopedia. Look forward to future "Woofer Wednesdays" Thanx Again
Meant to ask......what would you consider the pound for pound motor champ? Fi UFO? Sundown nsv2? Adire Brahma xbl2? The new Memphis '65 series' subwoofer with a 7.5" voicecoil?
So my favorite motor is weird; being a fan boy of Zeds amps early in my car audio journey, I fell in love with a motor from Lanzar shortly after. In the early 2000’s before the opti’s sub line became a decent budget gem, I came across their HRWDC line. I still use the subs today, and to me, they’ve stood the test of time and have yet to disappoint in all the demos I’ve given throughout the years, and more recently, gave me solid results in the OSSPLC paired up with an old fosgate amp. But anyways, I Appreciate the time and effort you put into your content. Looking foreword to the next one!!
I know this is an older video and probably nothing to do with this subject, but we now have people out there running single 8" and 6 1/2 inch subs in special built enclosures hitting 160+ DBs When you see some guys dropping thousand of dollars on multiple much larger subwoofers barely hitting 150"s. But I'm aware of the mechanics more now than I did when I was younger and this subject added to my love of installs. The more you know the more you grow :)
A gift? You mean other than your pretty self and vast experience and knowledge? Wow , that's a deal. My fave motor ...I like them all😎 And thank you for looking at this😘. I have a far better understanding than I did, now it's time to do some learning.
The best motor I ever owned I just reconed today is a Resilient Sounds Onyx series. 80+ pounds of motor is just insane to me having grown up in the 80s and 90s I kinda got to witness the evolution of modern subwoofers. I've owned Orion HCCA subs and the Onyx is bigger. It's very impressive.
@nate0 Motor force and power handling are two independent characteristic and often they are opposing. For instance, one way to increase motor force is to increase the number of windings in the gap. This means you'd be using smaller diameter wire on your coil. in order to keep the same impedance, the winding height would be shorter and the coil will handle less power than a taller coil with larger wire.
@nate0 Power is what makes the motor move. You need to do a smaller box and more power. This is better than to Speakers. Do you only need one you can hit 170s if you do it right
Keep up the great work Ed . It was really nice meeting you in person at SEMA . I really appreciate you taking time to take a picture with me and Steve Meade. If your going to CES and need a camera guy message me I’m going to be there
Hello, enjoyed your video. Really appreciated your explanations and thought they were well done. I have been looking at the trw 17 rotary subwoofer and thinking about their use of the stationary motor and “helicopter” style mechanics to move the blades. I have also been looking at various “voice coil linear motors” made for motion of things other than speakers. IMO it would be interesting to build a rotary subwoofer using a solid mounted coil on the base and “spin” the magnet on the shaft and use the air gap in place of a ball bearing “swash plate” arrangement. Hence why I found your magnetics video informative. Managing a spinning magnet and coil gap certainly presents some new challenges but some opportunities as well. It would be attractive to build a rotary subwoofer for less than 23000$. Cheers, great video. EE Duane in Canada.
I love the series man you have a very good way of explaining things in good detail but not too much to lose the viewer. I hope that you keep the intro the Mister Rogers theme is really cool an unique. Another great video 👌
My favorite are the DC Audio Neo Elite 4" coil Neo motors. Some honorable mentions are the M1 Level 5 3" coil motors and the Sundown Team Ferrite motors.
Would it be possible to make a motor with a simple ferrite ring and pole with the north/South in a vertical axis, with a manageably small gap? I've been thinking about making a large sub with the goal of high excursion, not worried about sound quality. I would outsource the soft parts and coil but build the basket and motor myself. I've also thought about using a conventional brushless electric motor, with an offset crankshaft connected to a diaphragm by a con rod. Similar to an engine, but with a diaphragm instead of a piston. I don't think it could be used for music, but at a set frequency it could move an enormous amount of air due to the efficiency of a brushless rotating motor.
Cool breeze.. Keep thinking.. The magnet ring won't work because it will overheat.... the "electric motor" has been done but you need a small motor to overcome the inductance... Say;:; alternator motor yes powerful.. But only once it's already moving.. To start it moving takes huge Amperes.. Send me an email....i will help you
My favorit motor is the rockford fosgate t2 12. Not the first silver one but the murdered out all black model. I honestly had no idea there was so much involved with sub motors.
I had a set of 6 inch cerwin vegas speakers with 2 chrome tweeters in the middle of them and they had massive magnets on them.they were car audio speakers they sounded great but I put it much power into them when I was a kid
Great vid, and exactly the type of vids I want to see just getting into subwoofer reduilding/building/experiments lol :) a voice coil vid would be great, ie: difference between copper alum, winding count, flat vs round, wire gauge, etc.

So much so that I’ve been thinking of ordering another lethal injection or a Death Row. I just hate waiting on custom built subs as I’m very impatient 😂. That Lethal injection LOVED the lows.
Great video brother very well explained! It funny speaking to some of the older competitors from the 90’s, they used to glue weights under the dust caps to increase motor force. Not sure that actually worked but it was cool to hear the stories how guys tried to get more DB’s that way.
Great in depth view into subwoofer motors. Keep the series going, I love information. I also love sundown audio equipment and thier whole team is awesome also. Bass on brotha and keep the vids coming!!!!
Deafbonce sa312 has a massive motor and has no pole vent, 3in coil and 2800rms I run a single deafbonce sa312 d1 at.5ohm on my deafbonce 4k daily, takes every bit of it and I have never once smelled any coil smells... Ive been thinking of getting another one
tankdog03 love my DB subs. I’m running the SA27 series though. Never smelled voicecoil even when giving them a little over rated power. Haven’t inspected the motors that thoroughly but they are great reliable subs! 👍
I keep hearing you say that the Stroker wasnt made for high excursion. This is not right!! Back in those times, that is exactly what that woofer was made for!!! It of course may not seem like that these days, but i was installing those things back in the 90's and they were blowing our minds and our windows!!!! Im 46 years young, been in the game since the mid 80;s when i was 15 years old just so you know my background. Great video, of course!!!! I love the way your mind works, i wish i had your ability to see things the way you explain them!!!
The original Stroker motor like you mentioned, as well as another “pancake” that always stuck out to me was the PPI Flat Piston Pros. After that it was the earlier Digital Designs motors(A,B,C versions), they weren’t anything substantially out of the norm but they just looked really good to me, just clean polished ferrite and chrome. I seem to remember they used to have one supposed “SQ” orientated series, the 9100 line, that had a really unique looking motor structure as well.
I know it's an old video but on my 200oz motor off a 15" NVX I rebuilt into a 10" how does coil winding height affect it the oem 3" coil had a 2" wide winding width and the coil I was sold is like 1 5/8ish? Both 4 layer It works fine I'm happy but just curious. I was able to bottom out the 15 a couple times with the original 2" windings so figure the shorter windings prob wouldn't as one plus? Also the original was aluminum and new coil is copper.
I ran atomics when I was younger. Quite speaker 40,000 watt at Burst. Was not to much to put out power like this. Now days you can do it. I’m known for running one speaker. You don’t need a pair just takes up airspace. Ed I know you know what you’re doing. Smaller box more power this is how you tweak it to make it perform. Personally I like the horns box design. @@joecool7165 some how my HDX3s hit 15-65hz but 28 hits the hardest. What you got to do is build your box on the specs of the Sundown Xv3 and it will sound the best.
Thank you very much for making this video I just recently got my hands on a Cerwin Vega Stroker 154 model subwoofer it's a 15 inch I got it not working because somebody blew the coil but my intention is to recone it and the hard part about this whole deal is that I don't know the exact height of the voice coil. I found a similar sub on eBay and I was reading the instruction on the outside box and it says that it uses a dual cab technology short voice coil so I don't really know too much what that means but I was able to look online and find some information and it uses a 3.0 height voice coil what I don't understand is the part where it says dual Gap technology does that mean that there has to be a gap between the bottom voice coil and the top pole of the magnet
Your confusing jbl gti II DRIVE and stroker... Stroker is standard 3.000 diameter and 1.5 inch high single winding at 4 ohm car.. Stadium 8 ohm.. That speaker is super duper clean and sexy
Great video.. my fave motor strictly for looks would be the IA death penalty v1. Without the boot that motor was just sexy. And the sp4 v1 for performance.. great motor and affordable 4 inch coil sub.. a question I have for u is, up to a couple yrs ago people constantly said anything above a triple slug motor was a waist. Now there are quad stack slug motors and people are saying anything above that is a waist. Is the amount of slugs really a waist, or is it just more cost effective? I know that as u add slugs ur top plate and center pole have to change to reflect and best use the magnetic field. But is there really a such thing as waisted slugs on a motor?
Oh I love those IA woofers. He has a few great designs over the years. IMO the amount of slugs is neither a waist or not. At least we can't tell without more info. What's the cost balance vs going with larger diameter vs going Neo? What's the design of the motor, what's the top plate size, what size is the coil, etc...
You briefly spoke about motors like 4 years ago when you made a video about voice coils, I believe you went over adire audio motor and reg motor. It’s been years ago though
Could you do a recone on the cirwin Vega stroker? It would help me alot. I have an early 90s cirwin Vega octigon 15" car sub that I am trying to recone but I am a bit lost as far as how much depth they're supposed to be from the voice coil to the Mount Pole is it pretty much the same as that cerwin Vega you have there so I take that the voice coil just needs to be on the top surface also on this one?
Awsome, this helped, wanting to build some subs, experimenting with a few different parts, and this helped me understand a little better, if you have a couple Xtra stroker motors lying around how much would you sell em for?
@@SparkedEd I was pretty skeptical, if it did work you could just glue a bigger magnet to anything wallah and Wallah more powerful speaker! I've only seen it on small cheap mid bass woofers and it was a hollow ring not a solid puck. On topic I like the modern subs with the big fat triple stack bootie it just looks powerfully, the guy from EMF audio did a video where he built a sub with a monster magnet on a 10" the magnet was significantly larger in diameter than the driver looked crazy but impressive at the same time.
From what I am gathering is that you just basically have to have a subwoofer graveyard in order to Frankenstein a fully custom sub together. I cannot find any website that sells the components i want other than in the complete speaker. The only things i can find are the carbon fiber re-cone kits so, that's a start. My ideal situation would be to make some 12' Team Sundown Neo's with carbon fiber caps. any information pointing me in that direction would be greatky appreciated
So I have a question how much does motor Force play into compared to cone area let's say you have a 12-in sundown SA v1 and you have a 10-in sundown zv5 what would potentially be louder given the woofer was given the perfect enclosure per specs and power? If you could touch on that that would be fantastic
Well done Ed! You covered stuff that most of us don’t even consider when buying subs and you help us all make more informed decisions.

Orion speaker is made all wrong. I do use their amplifier. Best bang for the buck. Specially the white class rating you can achieve. Speakers are totally different. Personally I like holy shit. Or Atomic makes good stuff. Not too many speakers are really designed and made right.
@@joecool7165 im now into Soundqubed. I love the HDX3. I have 2 and those woofers move huge amount of air. 35mm of xmax.
@@RyanBassForLife Can’t disagree with the air. They just don’t make that much noise. I’ve done all of this SPL&SQ
@@joecool7165 some how my HDX3s hit 15-65hz but 28 hits the hardest. What you got to do is build your box on the specs of the Sundown Xv3 and it will sound the best.
Fi BTL-neo, SP4 v2 and Huthcinson ETA. You can't mistake the SP4 for anything else that I've seen
It's certainly unique, I love the unique designs.
I think my Favorite Motor design was the TC Sounds LMS Ultra. Favorite motor by aesthetics? Going to have to agree with you on the Z series Neo setup.
Sir, what if you make a voice coil in square shape... Not a round circular regular shape. Is it possible...?? Just curious.
For parts you can always hit up fixmyspeaker.com
Your confusing jbl gti II DRIVE and stroker... Stroker is standard 3.000 diameter and 1.5 inch high single winding at 4 ohm car.. Stadium 8 ohm.. That speaker is super duper clean and sexy
How can I get a motor for the x series my 18’s top plate shifted and is hitting and my store near me said I need a new one :/
A lot of courage and epoxy glue
By fare one of the best videos 👍👍
Thanks man. That's kind
It’s been years ago though
great info !!
i enjoyed it keep it coming 👍👍👍
Thank you
Elemental designs 13av.2 motor great and good to look at
Could you do a recone on the cirwin Vega stroker? It would help me alot. I have an early 90s cirwin Vega octigon 15" car sub that I am trying to recone but I am a bit lost as far as how much depth they're supposed to be from the voice coil to the Mount Pole is it pretty much the same as that cerwin Vega you have there so I take that the voice coil just needs to be on the top surface also on this one?
Your best bet is to reach out to RA Audio on FB facebook.com/raaudioo
The sundown audio Ns4....looks like a tall holed cylinder i just looks cool to me
Awsome, this helped, wanting to build some subs, experimenting with a few different parts, and this helped me understand a little better, if you have a couple Xtra stroker motors lying around how much would you sell em for?
It's basic but the Boston acoustic g5 one of my favorite woofers(excuse me..subwoofer)...
Fi BTL UFO motors I've always wanted a pair.
They are pretty
I see sometimes an extra magnet glued to the back of main magnet, does that really help
I wouldn't think so. The flux lines would be off.
The ring you speak of is used mostly in home audio so you can mount the speakers near the TV without causing magnetic interference.
Thanks for sharing
Hey i have a L7 12 that was in a box and fell off a truck. Well the magnet came off. Is that a repairable thing?
Atomic. 40,000 W three second burst. Not too many speakers will do this.
Yes. They do... Atomic apocalypse!! I won some championships with them
I've been trying to figure this out for a while, does the size of the motor directly affect the overall wattage the sub can handle ?
No, coil design and size is what determines power handling
From what I am gathering is that you just basically have to have a subwoofer graveyard in order to Frankenstein a fully custom sub together. I cannot find any website that sells the components i want other than in the complete speaker. The only things i can find are the carbon fiber re-cone kits so, that's a start. My ideal situation would be to make some 12' Team Sundown Neo's with carbon fiber caps. any information pointing me in that direction would be greatky appreciated

Excellent good Woofer Wednesday and don't forget about Chicken Enchiladas Wednesday
So I have a question how much does motor Force play into compared to cone area let's say you have a 12-in sundown SA v1 and you have a 10-in sundown zv5 what would potentially be louder given the woofer was given the perfect enclosure per specs and power? If you could touch on that that would be fantastic
