The wizzer cone in the middle acts much like a tweeter, (low quality muffled one), to increase the higher frequencies to be usable. so while you may want to think of this as a midrange speaker, it was intended to be a "full range" driver, with of course limitati I ns on the low and high end... Such full range designs were very common, and are still often found in many applications.
Look up the original Morse brand 8" full range from the late 60s-early 70s. Widely used, very sensitive, and customizable as they were used by many manufacturers of console stereos from admiral to zenith.

Yes Sir.. you are 💯% right. Wish if did it with some testing. I consider this is the way to "tell" the speakers that I am going choose will look like. But in fact and like most of us it is different. Definitely depends on the setup as you mentioned and the projection of sound quality that follows. You are A Master on that. Really I have learned alot from your videos. But I have wish that you do more videos for the new swags. I need to get and add the new version but don't know exactly what is the difference between the new one and what I have.
I think your videos should include TSP, Distortion, FResponse, recommend Crossoverpoint (determined by Distortion and FResponse) and maybe even Klippel data, that way customer, would have an easier time picking the right speaker. To be real, I think all company videos should include that.
What causes those lack of a better term fart noises a "blown" or damaged speaker makes when it seems there's no audible or feeling with your fingers of coil scratching when you push the cone in and out. I've had speakers/subs that sounded ok at low levels but as soon as I put a little more wattage or a little deeper bass note to it it started making those nasty fart noises kinda faint but noticable. What causes those noises?
That one thats shielded looks like it come out of an old getto blaster from the late 80 early 90s that one that has the dual cone is from like the late 70s early 80s LOL. YES I AM OLD

The 3" isn't for car audio. A speaker designed for cost and duty can be crap, when it's crap. Just because your budget is $1 doesn't mean it's not crap because it's the best you could do for $1.

It must be crap. I would bet that the 8 inch in combination with the first cheap speaker through a two way crossover and an appropriate enclosure would produce amazing sound quality... I have a set of vintage Technics home Hifi speakers that have speakers in them that look literally just like what you have shown here and they are extremely efficient with a very strong mid bass punch... Would I use them in a car? Not without an enclosure.... They wouldn't even need a power amplifier either, the amplification from the head unit would be plenty.... The other benefits are the weight savings.... Lighter speakers, no amplifier to drive them and no electrical load on the alternator of the car so effectively you end up with a faster car and get more miles to the gallon.... So really, which are the better speakers? It's not always about maximum power output. It's about matching the components to deliver the sound quality that you should be getting at a sound pressure level that works best for you.... It means nothing to have the biggest and baddest components, so many people have spent so much money on what was meant to be the highest powered, best looking, only to come to the conclusion that it sounds like rubbish.... That's what you get when you are educated by marketing wank.... And I'm sorry but this video appears to be a poor form of marketing wank also.... If you wanted to do a comparison video, you should have stuck with car speakers, don't compare your car speakers with what is meant to be for home Hifi.... Even the OEM factory audio gear, they were designed to work well together and the only time that you should be making a comparison to the OEM factory speakers is if you can personally attest to a huge improvement with your speakers over the OEM's... Otherwise don't bother.
Another thing to note. A speaker can sound very good, up to the point where you exceed the design capabilities. What I mean is this; A speaker may indeed be very accurate at moderate or low volumes, but may not be capable of the power handling and/or excursion for higher volumes with the same accuracy. So a given speaker malty be one of the best for low volume listening, and be worthless any louder. Another thing to note, the size of the magnet does not mean it can also take more power. Power rating is a function of the coil winding(s) and cooling (if any). Over the years there have been many speaker designs. At a few points, some manufacturers played with larger magnet designs using the same components otherwise, just to increase the efficiency of the speaker. There were even designs that incorporated fixed electro-magnet coils with the fixed magnet to increase the efficiency and capabilities of the driver. There was also at least one design where a fixed coil was placed and driven opposite of the moving coil to increase efficiency and capability. But generally you can learn a lot by looking at the drivers, not the full story, but enough to let you know if it may be worth a listening test or not. The big thing is to first determine how it will be used and what it will need to meet for your application.
I've mentioned the motor size doesn't indicate power handling, but power rating isn't from the coil alone either. If the motor is weak and you dump a bunch of power in it, it won't move enough to cool it. You also can't have a large coil with a small motor unless you're dealing with a cup style. In other words, if the motor is 3" diameter it won't have a 2" coil in it, so that's a good indicator of what's going on there.
So to be clear, on a manufacturers channel, we're supposed to make videos that don't have any of our product in them, ever? If it was an ad, would we have included 5 other speakers that aren't even remotely comparable in size, cost, or quality? You could literally interpret this video as "other stuff is cheaper, I'll buy that because it's cheap"
The texturing on the plastic cone actually has a side benefit of reducing breakup and reflections. Probably not by much considering how flexible those cones probably are, but it does help them from sounding more awful than they already are. I also tried some time back to take something like that 8" full range driver and see if it could be modded to have even half decent sound for a home audio application. Not out of practicality, but just for the fun of it. And although bass is not really possible, they can be made to have a reasonably ear pleasing mid range which extendeds into the mid treble range... Of course it required some extensive cone treatments and suspension alterations...... But it was possible.. And of course, the whole effort is comparable to polishing a turd, as it can only be polished so much before it smears.... But it was a fun project to teach my son a little about how speakers and acoustics work, and I think that is what mattered. Now he is modding really high quality drivers and getting exceptionally good sound out of them!

How about how to determine which subwoofer is louder by comparing specifications/parameters? I've always used displacement (Sd x Xmax) to make that determination, but I'm sure there is much more to it than that.
I believe in this video I touched on that ruclips.net/video/ykPn0CpdrVQ/видео.html but the reality is there is no way to look at specs and say "yup, this is louder" without the application being in mind and specs being wildly different. Even if it is "louder", that doesn't tell you how it sounds. It could be 1 dB louder but sound like garbage.
do one with odd shapes like 6x9's does the shape effect the sound quality? always done a circle type speaker as far back as i can remember and was going to be getting a 6x9 for a explorer i got , the stock sounds bad but thought maybe its the shape that could make it sound bad..... would that matter ?
also wattage is not the main driver of how powerful a speaker will sound, it is only half the story. you can have 20 watts play 98DB in all the same Spectrum as a 100 watts but will cost a lot more due to it being a better speaker. (the 20 watts) so what you need to look for is Decibels at Frequency First and the lower the Watts it takes to do them! (think about it, if you plug 5 of them, you get your 100 watts worth in watts BUT you have 5 times 98 DB filling the room... i think that might be more than 98 DB at that point.)

@@EMFAudio well you would not really save, those speakers cost a lot more. tho you also have to choose what size you would put in carefully and that will probably cost more than the Amp. by Example, my guitar Amp speakers from my "Traynor 15 inch X2 Yorkville 1970 Cabinet" are 37 watts RMS each, when the guitar AMP's tubes died, i used those in place of my 120 watts Subwoofers and unlike them, the speakers were making the whole house shake and sounded 10 times better... tho they only sounded good till 3KHz when put on the normal output of a stereo. (tho the guitar sounded amazing) now, they were not able to take the same power so now i cannot put the volume passed half, not that i need to at that level. so if i had many in series, i would probably make more than just my house shake and maybe the neighbors as well... i guess what i mean is if you take high quality speakers that take less watts for the same loudness and build a good cabinet, you can propel the whole range louder with less distortion and heat (amp) built in the house. (100 watts sounding like 500, in my case 37W RMS, 90W max, sounding like 200W max.) tho guitar speakers are a bad example for "what to look for" since they are build to project a certain range and they do not "look" like they would be loud. Did the cheap 4 inch and 8 inch speakers come from a Stern Pinball machine? I ask because those are the exact speakers Stern have used in their games for many years. While they didn't sound too bad inside a pinball cabinet (possibly helped with some EQ), once upgraded to better speakers, the difference is incredible! Stern were really pushing the limits of the 8 inch trying to make it act like a sub (which really didn't work and just caused horrible distortion). Seems like they have finally realized the error of their ways as Stern's newest games now use a proper LF driver in the cabinet and co-axial speakers in the back box that sound a thousand times better.
They are, and they still use them. Those speakers are in the Pro systems, the different ones you speak of are in the Limited systems. The speakers you get depends on the level of machine.

However, ever since The Beatles Pinball was released late last year, Stern have been using a new 8 inch driver without a whizzer cone in their standard Pro games. It's unbranded and I'm sure it's still fairly cheap, but it sounds a heck of a lot better than the twin cone driver shown in this video. It can actually produce some decent low end! I believe the standard back box speakers have been changed too.

@@EMFAudio No, it was defiantly stock as it's what was installed when the Beatles machine was unboxed, fresh from the factory. The standard Pro models of The Munsters and Black Knight: Sword of Rage also use the same new driver (I've assisted in setting up these games for a local pinball club). The new woofer looks fairly similar to the twin cone driver shown in this video, but it does have a few cosmetic differences and of course, no whizzer cone. You'll notice the difference in sound quality too when playing these new titles.

Making it neo wouldn't make it handle more power. It would require a different coil to take more power. People have been putting 100-125 watt per channel amps on SWAG's though.
The sound ordinance is simply the house brand, huge bang for the buck. Used many. All sizes. For under 50 bucks... U. S. Designed for sound quality... Built overseas for price.

The tricky thing with that is the microphone influence and the listening device influence. Majority of viewers are on phones so you may not be able to tell the difference in speakers on video.

Speakers are weird, I've heard old paper cone 6x9's in a pontiac 6000 that sound better than modern vehicles with higher end sound systems, I even had a pair of radioshack 15's with small motors that had incredible bass with a great sound. I have expensive carbon fiber component speakers in my car and they sound just ok. I think it's best just to listen before you buy.
I know exactly the speakers you're talking about if they're the factory ones. I think you're confusing "sounds better" with "more bass". They are incredibly bass heavy, but muddy as can be.

You'd want something that is essentially marine rated, which is something I could make custom but not something we normally make. But, one consideration with that, 800 watts is roughly 80 amps of draw. Your motorcycle doesn't have the battery or charging power to support that. I suspect you have somewhere between 30-50 amps of charging, you can't realistically support more than about 300-400 watts of actual power.
That speaker is the highest efficiency and sounds absolutely terrible. It's the second worse sounding speaker in the bunch. Efficiency has nothing to do with sound quality and in often cases the less efficient speaker sounds better. And just for point of reference, the speaker you're talking about sells on the retail market for around $5.

That whole stamp basket "can sound good" is bullshit, Arnie nudell would turn in his grave hearing your "stamp basket can sound good BUT" gibberish. Pretty much the entire older classic line of Infinity (IRS, RS, KAPPA, GAMMA, OMEGA, ectra) very well received and praised for its quality (* PS audio runs the IRS V as their reference system, those 12 inch graphite woofers are stamped baskets*) still WELL UP THERE IN PRICE! And hard to beat even by modern day speaker, mind you it's the entire DESIGN that does that stamped baskets are such a small useless point then.
That's exactly how a lot of people end up buying garbage equipment. They look at the "build quality" not knowing what they're looking at, the price looks like a good deal when it's too good to be true, and RMS ratings are literally whatever the manufacturer decides to put on it. That sounds like a mechanical failure, like spider loose from the former, cone loose from the former, cone damage, etc.

A massive audio 10" with carbon fiber was the best sounding sub I ever had with very deep bass.
So to recap the video, the 3 x EMF speakers they manufacture are super quality, whereas the other two random speakers they found, are not.
There is 1 EMF speaker in that bunch, 2 out of 6 speakers had branding on them. If the 2 we OEM were EMF speakers they'd say EMF on them.
That 3in for a bmw refit or rebuild kit? And each of those speakers were designed with cost and duty in mind. So to say there crap is wrong.

The texturing on the plastic cone actually has a side benefit of reducing breakup and reflections. Probably not by much considering how flexible those cones probably are, but it does help them from sounding more awful than they already are. I also tried some time back to take something like that 8" full range driver and see if it could be modded to have even half decent sound for a home audio application. Not out of practicality, but just for the fun of it. And although bass is not really possible, they can be made to have a reasonably ear pleasing mid range which extendeds into the mid treble range... Of course it required some extensive cone treatments and suspension alterations...... But it was possible.. And of course, the whole effort is comparable to polishing a turd, as it can only be polished so much before it smears.... But it was a fun project to teach my son a little about how speakers and acoustics work, and I think that is what mattered. Now he is modding really high quality drivers and getting exceptionally good sound out of them!

That is definitely not the only factor. Also remember that mids aren't for producing bass frequencies.

How about how to determine which subwoofer is louder by comparing specifications/parameters? I've always used displacement (Sd x Xmax) to make that determination, but I'm sure there is much more to it than that.
I believe in this video I touched on that ruclips.net/video/ykPn0CpdrVQ/видео.html but the reality is there is no way to look at specs and say "yup, this is louder" without the application being in mind and specs being wildly different. Even if it is "louder", that doesn't tell you how it sounds. It could be 1 dB louder but sound like garbage.
do one with odd shapes like 6x9's does the shape effect the sound quality? always done a circle type speaker as far back as i can remember and was going to be getting a 6x9 for a explorer i got , the stock sounds bad but thought maybe its the shape that could make it sound bad..... would that matter ?
Cone shape can matter, that would be difficult to show variance data and I'd have to use the same speaker line in two different sizes to show it.
also wattage is not the main driver of how powerful a speaker will sound, it is only half the story. you can have 20 watts play 98DB in all the same Spectrum as a 100 watts but will cost a lot more due to it being a better speaker. (the 20 watts) so what you need to look for is Decibels at Frequency First and the lower the Watts it takes to do them! (think about it, if you plug 5 of them, you get your 100 watts worth in watts BUT you have 5 times 98 DB filling the room... i think that might be more than 98 DB at that point.)
Sensitivity doesn't tell how it sounds either. PA drivers sound terrible but have a higher sensitivity than a dynamic driver that sounds good.

@@EMFAudio well you would not really save, those speakers cost a lot more. tho you also have to choose what size you would put in carefully and that will probably cost more than the Amp.
by Example, my guitar Amp speakers from my "Traynor 15 inch X2 Yorkville 1970 Cabinet" are 37 watts RMS each, when the guitar AMP's tubes died, i used those in place of my 120 watts Subwoofers and unlike them, the speakers were making the whole house shake and sounded 10 times better... tho they only sounded good till 3KHz when put on the normal output of a stereo. (tho the guitar sounded amazing) now, they were not able to take the same power so now i cannot put the volume passed half, not that i need to at that level.
so if i had many in series, i would probably make more than just my house shake and maybe the neighbors as well...
i guess what i mean is if you take high quality speakers that take less watts for the same loudness and build a good cabinet, you can propel the whole range louder with less distortion and heat (amp) built in the house. (100 watts sounding like 500, in my case 37W RMS, 90W max, sounding like 200W max.)
tho guitar speakers are a bad example for "what to look for" since they are build to project a certain range and they do not "look" like they would be loud.

Just looking at it cannot tell you the correct things. Looking at the important parts and details are the ones that ensures you can pick the best.

Did the cheap 4 inch and 8 inch speakers come from a Stern Pinball machine? I ask because those are the exact speakers Stern have used in their games for many years. While they didn't sound too bad inside a pinball cabinet (possibly helped with some EQ), once upgraded to better speakers, the difference is incredible! Stern were really pushing the limits of the 8 inch trying to make it act like a sub (which really didn't work and just caused horrible distortion). Seems like they have finally realized the error of their ways as Stern's newest games now use a proper LF driver in the cabinet and co-axial speakers in the back box that sound a thousand times better.
They are, and they still use them. Those speakers are in the Pro systems, the different ones you speak of are in the Limited systems. The speakers you get depends on the level of machine.
@@EMFAudio Thanks for the reply. I'm aware that only the Limited Edition models have an upgraded speaker package. However, ever since The Beatles Pinball was released late last year, Stern have been using a new 8 inch driver without a whizzer cone in their standard Pro games. It's unbranded and I'm sure it's still fairly cheap, but it sounds a heck of a lot better than the twin cone driver shown in this video. It can actually produce some decent low end! I believe the standard back box speakers have been changed too.

@@EMFAudio No, it was defiantly stock as it's what was installed when the Beatles machine was unboxed, fresh from the factory. The standard Pro models of The Munsters and Black Knight: Sword of Rage also use the same new driver (I've assisted in setting up these games for a local pinball club). The new woofer looks fairly similar to the twin cone driver shown in this video, but it does have a few cosmetic differences and of course, no whizzer cone. You'll notice the difference in sound quality too when playing these new titles.

Making it neo wouldn't make it handle more power. It would require a different coil to take more power. People have been putting 100-125 watt per channel amps on SWAG's though.

The tricky thing with that is the microphone influence and the listening device influence. Majority of viewers are on phones so you may not be able to tell the difference in speakers on video.

Speakers are weird, I've heard old paper cone 6x9's in a pontiac 6000 that sound better than modern vehicles with higher end sound systems, I even had a pair of radioshack 15's with small motors that had incredible bass with a great sound. I have expensive carbon fiber component speakers in my car and they sound just ok. I think it's best just to listen before you buy.
I know exactly the speakers you're talking about if they're the factory ones. I think you're confusing "sounds better" with "more bass". They are incredibly bass heavy, but muddy as can be.
@@EMFAudio I thought they sounded good as well, but yes mostly because of bass, people who sat in the car thought it had a subwoofer. The biggest downside was accuracy on complex or fast changing frequencies which is to be expected from low wattage/small motors I suppose.

You'd want something that is essentially marine rated, which is something I could make custom but not something we normally make. But, one consideration with that, 800 watts is roughly 80 amps of draw. Your motorcycle doesn't have the battery or charging power to support that. I suspect you have somewhere between 30-50 amps of charging, you can't realistically support more than about 300-400 watts of actual power.
You might have an amp that says 2,500 watts on it, but I assure you, you don't have 2,500 watts.

That speaker is the highest efficiency and sounds absolutely terrible. It's the second worse sounding speaker in the bunch. Efficiency has nothing to do with sound quality and in often cases the less efficient speaker sounds better. And just for point of reference, the speaker you're talking about sells on the retail market for around $5.

That whole stamp basket "can sound good" is bullshit, Arnie nudell would turn in his grave hearing your "stamp basket can sound good BUT" gibberish. Pretty much the entire older classic line of Infinity (IRS, RS, KAPPA, GAMMA, OMEGA, ectra) very well received and praised for its quality (* PS audio runs the IRS V as their reference system, those 12 inch graphite woofers are stamped baskets*) still WELL UP THERE IN PRICE! And hard to beat even by modern day speaker, mind you it's the entire DESIGN that does that stamped baskets are such a small useless point then.

They look at the "build quality" not knowing what they're looking at, the price looks like a good deal when it's too good to be true, and RMS ratings are literally whatever the manufacturer decides to put on it. @@EMFAudio I bought a cheap Chinese 10 inch underwear speaker about a month ago. Broke it in for 2 weeks. Still playing pretty good. Rated for 150rms, but I'm probably playing it around 125 or so. If you break them in right even the cheap crap will last

I've been there but i noticed my hatchback i turned my subs off being curious i have 10 year old polk in the doors and a $18 speakers in the hatch because the plastic ones couldn't handle the sun and fell apart but wow im looking for some mtx or db drives for it soon because walmart sound wall has gotten me beat lmao
Also just bought a 96 buick lesabre-custom factory concert sound 2 system really good quality sounds as good as my mom's 06 Chrysler 300 that has lots of speakers 😆 but most my friends have terrible sounding systems like damn scrap it $20 speakers would be a upgrade for them
