    Okay, you're definitely an audio enthusiast. Finding deals. Here in Chicago, two points on finding deals. First the more affluent neighborhoods typically have better deals where the less/least, want ridiculous amounts and many times for a lot of crap. Second, I don't find much stuff in the great wide mid range price range. Either you paid nothing or near nothing for a component or you pay what they're worth. In other words that Bugatti is either found in the garbage or at a dealer who knows the true value of it. Recently at an audio dealer Saturday morning as I walked in the door, this older but well quaffed man was waiting to find out if the equipment he brought in was worth keeping repairing; a Marantz Model 7, 8, and 10B. Up to that point I've never seen an 8 amplifier plus he had more stuff at home too heavy to bring along with his son which after talking to him I believed were Model 9s. He didn't know what he had and I explained to him what what he had. And he got all of it from a neighbors junk(well not junk) left on the street. It was the one day a year in this affluent Northshore neighborhood put nicer things out to pasture. I mean. I have seen Kindel Mahogany furniture out there. Most of these people don't want to deal with selling stuff, unknown strangers coming in there homes.

    I like the ads , I found that same model last year for $75 down the street from my house at a thrift store. They were actually made back in the day in the same town that I live in. But they made really good quality speakers

    I have a set of DQ10A that are mirror imaged. I used to sell them as well. Another classic but rare find is the Dynaco A25XL (note the XL). Lots of A25's out there, and they were nice, but the XLs had much improved upper mids an top end.

    • @grumpy9478
      @grumpy9478 Месяц назад +1

      A25s were nicely balanced, solidly built, could play loudly well ... a bargin entry into high fidelity. perfect for the aspirational audiophile / college student bitd.

    • @6StringPassion.
      @6StringPassion. Месяц назад

      @@grumpy9478 Indeed. I used to sell those as well. Not many people remember the dynamax configuration with six A25XL per side wired in a series-parallel combination. But WOW. Listening to 'We Just Disagree' on those just punched you in the gut when the bass and drums kicked in.

    • @bigb2020
      @bigb2020 Месяц назад

      How can you tell if they are XL? Also, were some made in Denmark and some made in USA?

    • @6StringPassion.
      @6StringPassion. Месяц назад +1

      @@bigb2020 Look for a thin border around the front of the grille. Also - grilles are velcro/removable, in contrast with A25. All of the original A25 and A25XL were made in Denmark in the 70's prior to Dynaco in Pensauken NJ going under. All used SEAS drivers. The woofers were the same in both, but the tweeters were different. After closing in 1980, the Dynaco brand was purchased by other companies and continued to be used sporadically, with some using variations of the A25 model designation. But the original company ceased operations at that time.

      I agree! My first entry into high-end speakers was with the big A400’s! I could finally hear everything down to 30Hz with full dynamics. They were a revelation, if not the best at imaging though. I’d love to have a pair again, or maybe some small 150’s.

  • @dannyfannyfoodle
    @dannyfannyfoodle Месяц назад

    I’ve watched a number of your videos and they’re always so thoughtful and educational. Didn’t realize I wasn’t subscribed. Now I am!
    You mentioned Boston Acoustics A100, A150, etc. I have owned 150s, 200s, and even the big 400s. But the one to look for is the very last of the real Boston speakers which were designed to be an all out assault on hifi and compete with the boutique brands. I’m talking about the T1000 and T1030.
    My son is looking to get into hifi and the pair of Thiel CS3s that belonged to my deceased father turned out to have blown tweeters. We’re still trying to decide if it’s worth investing in new tweeters and having the bass equalizer serviced, but in the meantime I found a pair of Boston T1030s for $200 that I plan to take a 4 hour roadtrip to retrieve tomorrow with my son. These are acoustic suspension speakers with two 8 inch woofers, a 6 1/2 inch midrange, and one-inch soft dome tweeter. I owned a pair when I was about 20 years old and actually gave my Ohm Walsh 2s back to my father (who had gifted them to me when he bought the Thiels) because they were objectively better. Great speakers!
    One more cult speaker to add to the list is the Spica TC-50. And one to avoid unless you are VERY skilled is any electrostatic or planar magnetic speaker (quad, Martin Logan, Acoustat, etc).
    Love your work and super chill vibe. Should’ve known you’re from the PNW. Oh, and loved seeing the Fishbone LP in the background!
    And last, I agree that the OMG deals are harder than ever to find. I did find a pair of absolutely mint one-owner Klipsch Cornwalls for $900. And a few weeks later, I found a pair of the new JBL L100 Classics that retail for $4,400 with a few minor cosmetic issues for $650! They’re incredible and look amazing with that iconic, orange quadrex grille. ☮️

    I'm particularly in love with the B&W DM-220/30 models, especially their drivers. The BZ-200/16 ohm drivers are die cast zinc, with vented pole pieces. The TP or TZ-26 tweeters (depending on colour) are 1 inch polymide tweeters are clear but mellow. I bought two sets after rebuilding my housemate's pair of 220s, and I have a set of drivers from a 3rd set. I love those drivers. B&W used some black magic on those puppies.

    Great to see the DQ-10's mentioned, I have had mine about 30-35 years, they are matched, look in back at baffle board for the right/left tag. Mine came with the tall stands, and of all I have owned they are the easiest to keep looking nice, just the wood on the side. I do not remember if I am second or third owner, The other men apparently did not like them, They are power hogs! I had an Accuphase that was hard pressed to get them up there, Traded for a class 'h' Sounds craftsman 300+ WPC they woke up, Funny the house lights dimmed in time to the music. And diy they developed the dreaded foam rot, Took 10'" drivers out and noticed the frame was 12" I had a never used pair of professional JBL woofers in boxes, and they bolted in perfectly! Once they broke in OMG! No drilling no nothing just bolted in!

    Nice overview and bargains are out there, picked up some Altec Lansing Santana's first version for 200 and they were an easy fix, some light sanding/staining and recapping. Also picked up some Carver AL llls for 450 fully functional and in good shape. Good sounding bargains are the Advent Heritage or Laureates, typical foam rot on the main drivers but nice cabinets and nice sounding. Found a pair of speakers that came from a company in Tarp Germany (soldier married a native German and brought them back) for $50 called Scan Akustik now called Phonar Akustik (still in business) that are great sounding speakers. The owner was importing Danish speakers from 4 different companies then in 1983 decided to build his own. There are some speakers like the JBL 100s or HPM-100s that people go ga ga over but depending on your ears and your room whatever sounds good to me works for me even if they are 50 dollar bargain finds.

    The DQ10 have an incredible 5 driver integration, they sound sweet and forgivin, the only weak point is the 10 inch woofer doesn't go down to 40 hertz so they need the help of a good subwoofer like the Audio Pro B2-50 that go down to 22 hertz, I did a recap using Solen capacitors on a pair

    Yeahhh...as Gary Cole would say in Office Space, I got a pair of ADS l520s here locally for $50, but the tweeters were replaced with probably a Braun tweeter bc the sticky tweeters have a tendency to blow if cranked with modern equipment I'm guessing. They were the cloth and vinyl edition not the metal grill edition. My ADS l620s have the metal grills. Their uniqueness stems perhaps from the 2 way closed box design which has been abandoned by many modern speaker makers.

  • @mondoenterprises6710
    @mondoenterprises6710 10 дней назад

    Yeahhhh. The thing with vintage speakers is what needs replacing or upgrading or has it been done already and how do they sound in terms of pricing and then how those prices bump up against new quality speaker prices. And the other question is how or can they pair up with a 5.1 avr system. My guess is that the Dahlquists need a sub or two. And the cat scratch fever equation where the cat uses the speaker for its claws.

    And the Dahlquist are 'lookers', in my opinion, and hiding behind their good looks is the most Frankenstein-array and arrangement of drivers I've seen, LOL.
    If I recall correctly, a good friend of mine had been looking for a replacement midrange driver for his original Snell Type A which I believe was a Philips driver (squawker, not mid-bass driver which was harder to find). He discovered the Snell midrange was the same as used in the DQ-10 and he eventually located a pair of those for the repair. I recall the driver baskets were octagonal in shape.

    I bought a pair of old Advents for 20.00. Was it a bargain. Well. The cabinets are pretty bad. The surrounds where rotten of course. I have made them look better and fixed the surrounds. They sound ok. Look ok from a distance. Not sure if i would still call it a bargain lol.

      Mostly Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist for me. Estate sales and even yard/garage sales can yield nice speakers. I've gotten one distressed pair from a thrift store.

    How are Dayton Audio speakers?

      I actually shot some footage about some but left it out since I bought them new. I have some little Dayton speakers that I bought a few years ago. They helped get me back into hi-fi, so in that respect, they were great. I haven't A/B compared them with any of my other speakers.

    Man toss all those speakers you showed here except the JBL monitors and never think about that again! (I had those when I was too young to appreciate what they were... oh the horror :-)

    • @davidjudd951
      @davidjudd951 Месяц назад

      Nah, don't toss them. As a hobby, I've rebuilt several older box speakers, and they can be made to sound really respectable.
      With some added bracing, resonance treatment, driver and crossover replacement, I've been able to transform those older box speakers.
      Were they audiophile grade after the rebuilds? Probably not, but they were quite respectable.
      I've had several friends hear them before and after the rebuilds, and they were stunned at the improvement.
      There was no placebo effect by the way, they never knew they were ever rebuilt before hearing them after the improvement.
      It's not a money maker, but most hobbies aren't. As with most hobbies, there's no profit in it, I find it enjoyable.

    I have an old Denon 7.1 receiver driving 3 pair of JBL monitors, and a good JBL centre. Along with an old Cerwin Vega sub, nobody does bass better than C.V. This system sounds pretty good, to say the least. But I've heard some of the JBL stuff from china, it's exactly what JBL used to be called by the cork sniffers, Junk But Loud. I would not buy that crap with someone else's money.

    Tell the customer it needs a new filter cap, gonna be about $55.. how much is the cap? About 4 bucks. Why $55.. its gonna take me a 1/2 hour to get to it and a 1/2 hour to put it back together. I have to unsolder 5 wires to the board to get it out. And unsolder and resolder the new one. .... my solder station and suppilies cost about $100, F5 fader deox is $20 a can, brushes,and towels arent free either.

      Yes, it's soured me on doing repair work. With the last guy who asked me, someone I know socially, I tried my best to talk him out of it and eventually proposed a min. $50/max. $300 deal just so I wouldn't have to fret about the time if I run into a knotty problem.

      @Lancaster_Hi-Fi I'm a noob. I can take it apart, if I have less than 3 screws left over and it doesn't become a smoke bomb instantly. COOL! I get mostly cheap junk from a guy at the local flea market that literally has mostly junk. He once asked me to look at some bose 901's that the base was soaking wet and full of termites. Sponge, the terminals were rotted off. The surrounds were all gone. 200$ just for the surrounds plus my time. Nope. Also if it doesn't smell like the tiger cage at the zoo or covered in lung cancer smudge, It's a good day!

    missed out on some 250 buck Heresys on Marketplace about an hour from my place just south of Portland this year. They had only been up a few minutes and as soon as i messaged him there was someone on their way to grab em. Though I have scored a lot of super cheap or free gear this year.... a Pioneer Elite VSX-82TXS for 25 bucks, a Denon receiver with Definitve subwoofer and satellites and Boston Accoustics T930s altogether for free, Advent OLA pair in good shape for 100, Pioneer SX-535 in great shape for 100, and a Pioneer SX-737, great Technics qd33 turntable and Pioneer CS-33's altogether for 300, a pair of Paradigm Mini Monitor 3's for 30, a working and not much needed Bose 551 Spacial receiver and 901 series 3 set (needs refoam) and a set of 901 series 5's in great shape altogether for 300,. The Bose 551 receiver is a cool looking piece , and has the EQ i need built in! Been a fun year.
