Very notably, ProZD actually first became known on the internet as the person who voiced Mordecai in Lackadaisy fandubs, and now here he is voicing Mordecai in the official release!
One thing I always thought was great about Lackadaisy was that when asked why the characters were all cats, why not just have them be people instead, Tracy's answer was just "cats are more expressive and fun to draw." And I totally get it!
Mordecai’s “ticking” he has while aiming his pistol is EXTREMELY accurate in the world of marksmanship. The world around you fades and it’s just you, the target, and the gun. Praise for this show so far.
@@Spleenklepto for a moment I forgot that shooting ranges existed, so I thought you were saying that the pilot was accurate to the hatchet man experience
One thing that I really appreciate is that they do something I don't often see with anthro characters in animation: They remembered that cats are _extremely_ emotive with their tails. Seriously, look at these characters, their tails are always moving and twitching and adding to the characters' performances, it's great stuff and makes everyone look super lively.
I absolutely loved that detail while watching, the way the ears and tails all move and act cat like. Goes a long way to make the characters actually feel animal like
Agreed! There are so many more options for showing emotion, even in silhouette, when tails and ears are involved. The bottlebrush tails for surprise. The twitching tail tip for the hunt. The twitching ear for irritation. The artists are clearly familiar with cats!
Holy shit, you're right! Like, not even in general, but I'm watching and there are moment-to-moment changes in their tails' positions and...floofiness? That are incredibly subtle. When Ivy's trying to get the car started in the shed for instance, you can barely see her (relatively understated, compared to Rocky and the others') tail against the background, but they still take the time to animate it floofing up when she suddenly hears the rival gang approaching. Excellent touch!
I think it's worth mentioning that the webcomic has been dead for THREE YEARS while the artist worked on this short. Like literally the last time a canon comic page came out was in April 2020. That's the level of dedication we're looking at here.
@Eltrio2 I believe the writer has addressed it and said she does plan to resume the comic soon, so you shouldn't have to wait very long. At the very least there is confirmation she plans to continue it eventually.
I've actually been reading Lackadaisy from the start. Having been on DA since I was flipping 12-13, back in the mid 2000s the online mainstream art world was already massive but a lot more coherent and centralised, so super talent didn't commonly fall through the cracks like it does these days. Lackadaisy utterly erupted into something that was massive for the time, to a bit overlooked during the hyper distracted big social media era since the 2010s. Hope this pilot turns into something incredible and known far and wide, like the comic that bore it; it is incredible.
I'm happy for lackadaisy, but it's not perfect. From a writing perspective I felt that there were some scenes that dragged on when there could have been an interesting dual, intercut through-line between the first set of characters and the group at the saloon and also some of the characters presented as being somewhat cliche even if they have a detailed backstory. There seems to be a lot of animators/artists that create stories and then go on to create animated works and while it's great to see indie talent it is noticeable when people don't come from a writing background or don't completely take advantage of the language of cinema specifically. I really wanted to like this pilot, but I knew that it wasn't going to be all that when the beginning card read "prohibition is in full effect" instead of something like "the height of the prohibition" or something less clunky like that. There is plenty of room for growth seeing as this is just the pilot, but I'm aching for these indie animators who create expanded universes to really blow it out of the water in terms of writing.
@@MurkyMambodawg you’re claiming their writing is cliche when you said they should have “the height of the prohibition.” On the beginning card. Yknow having two “the’s” in your sentence sounds so much clunkier right?
I watched the pilot and personally love how Freckle is characterized. The shy timid guy going crazy the second that he touches a gun but being very nervous about that because he knows he goes out of control. It’s just SO good!
All the characters being cats really helps with the ability to both give everyone very distinct looks without it going overboards. They're all recognizably cats but even in real life cats have so many wildly different appearances, fur colours, patterns, short hair, long hair, manes and tufts, that you can really lean into that with anthro feline designs. Same goes for dogs incidentally, though body shapes are generally more whats different between dog breeds.
Funny how Prozd has been voice acting Mordekai for like 10 years in fandubs, and he had this same voice prepared. For 10 years. It straight up sounds the same, and has always fit perfectly the character, was phenomenal on the pilot, his voicing of Mordekai is just perfect
I agree, though I personally think Prozd added a bit more emotion/flair to his performance as well over time which worked really well for some of the conflicts he experiences in the pilot.
Bro, 17 YEARS!? From a webcomic to now an ACTUAL PILOT!?!?!?! GODDAMN 😭 THEY ALL DID FANTASTIC WORK FOR THIS! PROPS TO EVERY SINGLE ARTIST AND VOICE ACTORS WHO HAS MADE THIS MASTERPIECE!!!!!!!
The minute I knew it was going to be a good show is when I saw the violin playing animation. I'm an instrumentalist (I play viola) and I cannot stress how many times I've seen media struggle to pull it off. It is notoriously hard to get a good animation (or acting scene) where someone is playing a stringed instrument. And the fact that they were able to pull it off with cat paws that were totally different than human hands? Astounding.
They had the guy playing the violin for the audio of the scene record himself with a camera as well to have a reference of how to animate it properly. Which shows they really care about the craft.
@@killionwatts5556 I love when you can tell just how much love and passion went into something like this, it makes it all feel so much better and really brings thd whole thing to an elevated quality that I just can't get enough of.
@@killionwatts5556 It really does. And I've become obsessed with lackadaisyand part of it how much love goes into every comic page and every second in the pilot.
The poem is perfect. Why? Because the first time we are introduced to Rocky waxing poetic you're like, "oh he's one of *those*" and then the next type he's waxing poetic you're like "OH HES ONE OF THOSE" Mad hatter as a feline bootlegger is really charming and whimsical in the best possible way.
I love that this feels more like true adult animation then what the mainstream is pushing no over abundance of swearing and jokes but a focus on a story with mature themes
@@maximstepinac6716 As much as I love both shows, both of them commit unecessary graphic violence and swearing to show their story and to prove they are for adults.
@@trippeverett5133 I don't even know if it's to prove anything it may just be because it's cool. Hopefully Hazbin Hotel will be more chill, it seems like it will be.
I wouldn't call it an adult animation in the slightest, it's told in a family friendly, but mature take, kids can enjoy it just as well as adults, while helluva boss is very juvenile, it's fun, but there's a big difference between adult, mature, and juvenile
I think its so important to note that this absolutely incredible 27 minute pilot was entirely crowd funded on kickstarter! They raised $330k out of an $85k goal, this series is so beloved! I do think its possible they could parley this into a community-funded show?
@@minciemae979 Absolutely they used it up. Quality animation costs money. This quality for $330k is actually cheap. For instance, "The Simpsons" cost $1 million per episode.
One thing that sets Lackadaisy apart is the lack of background music. Almost all the music we hear is played by the characters themselves (and is correctly animated, which is amazing in and of itself). So the action scenes are very atmospheric. We hear the voices of the characters, engines of the cars, the gunshots and footsteps, and that's pretty much it. It makes the scenes WAY more tense, and helps immerse the audience into the scenes.
Netflix: There's nothing better than big mouth with its 7 seasons and spin off series. Helluva boss,Hazbin Hotel,Murder drones and Lackadaisy: ALLOW US TO INTRODUCE OURSELVES
As a lifelong resident of St. Louis, I really like how much research the writers and creators did on the city and how they incorporated the city itself. From the limestone caves that run under and around the city, to the little towns that dot around it, to the mighty Mississippi itself. Little stuff like that breathes extra life in the production as it makes the location feel like not just a setting, but also like an extra character to the story.
One thing I really love about this series is that it doesn’t just use the Prohibition Era as a backdrop; the creator clearly has a lot of knowledge and love for the era and it shows. There’s a ton of historical references just in this pilot too, like Rocky referencing the Burke and Hare murders of the 1820s, to how the funeral homes were involved in rum running, and how Mitzi is reading about the infamous death of Isadora Duncan when we first see her. She was killed when her long scarf became wrapped around the rear wheel of her car, hence Mitzi’s shock and her comment after reading about it.
The other thing I like about Sungwon voicing Mordecai is that he actually did dubs of the lackadaisy comic in the early days of his channel, with mordecai being a prevelant character in the ones he voiced, so it’s really cool To see him voice him in the official release
Dude, if they decide to award the best indie animation, my vote is going to be Lackadaisy. Lackadaisy is so inspiring, awe, spectacularly unique. I think the music sells most of it. I watch this like over ten times that’s how good it is. I like to give a shout out to the creator for making such a masterpiece. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
I love how SungWon voiced Mordecai. He’s absolutely got the same vibe as Lysanderoth from ProZD’s *King Dragon* saga. And seeing Freckle go feral with the Thompson SMG was as entertaining as Rocky throwing sticks of dynamite out of the bucket of a moving steam shovel.
I’ve mentioned this on another video talking about Lackadaisy but I think it’s worth saying again. It’s so nice to see animation that’s for adults without being crass. The story and characters have a level of maturity that we never see in mainstream “adult” animated series.
@@AlottaBoulchit Absolutely, there can be a place for crass humour and there are shows that do it well. But I’m so tired of the market being flooded with Big Mouths and Family Guys. Lackadaisy is full of drinking, smoking and shootouts, yet they still manage to maintain a level of class and grace that I haven’t seen in any mainstream media to be honest.
That's one of the things that really turned me off Viziepop's shows. The writing quality just isn't there and it seems to be putting in stuff for shock value to distract from that
@Amethyst Imagination i agree with this, the only adult animation i can really think of that also doesnt fall into that sort of category or feeling of somewhat or entirely relying on crass humor or shock humor (especially to the effect that it lowers the quality of the show and the enjoyment of the viewer) is bojack horseman. i would LOVE to see more adult-oriented animation that doesnt necessarily rely on the "adult" ability to be or view crass, vile, shocking, or otherwise mature themes or visuals as their sole or main reason for being adult animation. midnight gospel is an honorary mention, i ADORE this show but the argument of the same could be made for some of the visuals, moreso and unlike the dialogue as with the others, even if to myself i dont mind them and often find symbolic meaning behind every seemingly weird or overly crass frame. though, there are a few moments of mature language and discussion of course. Its totally refreshing to see something like lackadaisy as an adult who enjoys animation for the exact reasons youve said, and its refreshing that the "adultness" of the animation doesnt come from the adult dialogue or the vile or crassness of it alone, but rather from the themes, worldbuilding, and storytelling. thats what makes good stories, good series.
started reading Lackadaisy around 2015 (im aware it came out in 2008?? right??) and I’m SO happy they came out with an actual animation . literally perfect
I'm so happy they turned it into an actual show 😭😭😭 Lackadaisy is such an underrated masterpiece of a webcomic so I'm glad this Pilot is introducing this story to more people
I love how well known both Tracy Butlers and Vivziepops work became in the recent years, I was obsessed with their work when I was in high school and ten years later getting to see their work getting this much recognition is amazing.
If they add covers of instrumentals that were popular in the 1920’s, I’ll be sold. For example, a cover of St Louis Blues during a dramatic moment at some point would be very, very fitting due to its chord progression. If the creators of Lackadaisy actually read this, your series looks incredible!
About 10 years ago there was a page in the comic Extras section where the author basically said she can draw humans perfectly well, but she finds cats much more expressive. The page included human versions of all major characters. It's probably still there if you care to look.
@@krinkrin5982 I remember seeing it back when she first drew/uploaded it, it's some really well-made sketches! As great as her anthropomorphic cats art! ^^
@@krinkrin5982 I completely agree. I noticed how expressive they all were. I love how they use every aspect of their bodies to add to their personality. Like when the water fell and Mordiki hissed in disgust at it. Their hair going up in shock when the train went by, etc.
As a fashion nerd the clothing accuracy for the decade is driving me crazy in a good way The gun accuracy and car accuracy are also fucking fabulous so far
It feels like with indie animations, the characters are always cute, psychotic, or cute AND psychotic. The amazing part with that though is that even though they all share those characteristics they all are still so unique and amazingly wrote. Every character from every single indie animation on RUclips is pure gold. It feels like they all are cats. You love how cute and innocent they are and wanna hug them but at the same time you wanna yell for them to get off the table because they’re goofballs. The only difference is that they aren’t cats and instead of jumping on the table and taking bites out of the plant they kill people and commit other violent crimes. Still similar lol. Every character in this pilot is so damn awesome and not just because they’re cats. I really hope this goes far and if it actually gets accepted into streaming services I pray to god that it doesn’t get contorted and ruined by horrible company’s which only care about money and not the consumers opinions whatsoever.
I started following Lackadaisy on Deviantart 15 years ago, and to see the pilot FINALLY come out, honestly blows me away. I had really been hoping and waiting for this and it didn't disappoint.
As a longtime fan of Lackadaisy, Tracy NEVER slacked with this comic. It's such a beautifully done piece of work not just with the art, but the research and storytelling. I am so happy with how well the pilot is doing. The team did wonderfully and everyone involved deserves the praise and more-- especially Tracy!
I had a love-hate relationship with Tracy's notes under some of the pages, because I would then spend a lot of time trying to replicate her research (like old timey check books) which was precious Lackadaisy time I was not getting
Same here! I remember reading her webcomic and being blown away by how beautiful her art style is! Excited to see her work done in an anime format (cat people smuggling alcohol and doing 1920's shenanigans is absolutely welcome)! ^^
Saberspark should spread the word that the lackadaisy backerkit fundraiser only has 6 days left. They have 1.4 million right now, which has already funded a complete first season. If they can get 1.5 mil, they'll also be able to make 3 mini episodes. And if they get 2 million by the end, they'll be releasing Blu rays of everything. You can back the project and get volume 1 and 2 of the comic in hardcover, plushes of the different characters, and a lot of other stuff depending on the pledge level.
Lol, sadly, this very suggestion was not acted upon and thus I find myself looking in from the outside, at the finish line, unable to give my support to this absolutely amazing project. I'm truly saddened, as I REALLY wanted those hardcover artbooks, but the fundraiser ended long after I figured out it even existed.
That animation is smooth as butter. the creators didn't have to go that hard, but they did. The only minor quibble I have is how the sketch lines aren't always removed (If that's intentional then so be it).
I agree that we need more cartoons that are shifting towards the young adult audience. There’s been too many cartoons that either are too silly or too childish. Mulan was a great example of environmental and character progressive storytelling. And this gave me a very similar vibe of crackly pretty lights with mature undertones. The perfect balance.
I mean shows like The Simpsons and King of the Hill kind of did that. We can relate to those shows because we know those or are those people. Milan was a good movie and I think it has one of the best female Disney protagonists.
So so good. This reminds me that indie 2D animation isn't dead. I'm so excited. I didn't realize the Webtoon existed, either! I can't wait to support this and watch it grow. Also, it feels like Cats Don't Dance's cousin. That's HIGH praise.
As someone who found out about Lackadaisy by the pilot they really did an incredible job and I hope they get their shining light and green lit approval
I started reading the comic after the pilot. I really love the way it is written. It feels touching. I was expecting it would romantice organized crime. I was really mistaken. This series is like the Yakuza franchise. The way you see characters doing bad things and still love them, without feeling like you have to ignore their bad doings. It's heartbreaking, haunting and beautiful.
I actually showed the Lackadaisy pilot to my parents, who are aware of my passion, following and knowledge of these types of projects and having explained it in minor detail to them before (because I had read the comic up until it died in about 2020) I wasn't fully convinced they'd appreciate it since it was such a small scale thing (COMPARED TO OTHER, STUDIO LED PROJECTS). But I showed them the pilot a few days after it dropped and they ended up being really impressed with how it turned out- this is a really easy thing to get people into, and a great story to introduce, either with the comic or the pilot just because both projects are so inspired. They absolutely deserve all the attention theyve gotten and I'm SO happy that they're continuing to receive it
That’s an extremely low bar, you know? Even Big Mouth is pretty much objectively better than Velma. Hell, I genuinely can not think of a single cartoon targeted at people over 12 that *ISN’T* better than Velma.
I was still in highschool when I've first seen these characters on deviantArt, and seeing them now, animated, with a successful webcomic behind it, makes me feel so strangely proud? As an artist, it's incredibly motivating to see people's passion projects come to fruition. The team did such a great job on this one!
Yea I was SHOCKED there’s even a webcomic! I just kept a eye on this pilot since I just seen it one day. Really cool to think that this pilot, with the added web comic AND the amount of sharing I seen, this could be a big thing!!!!
What I really find amazing about the animation is how expressive the characters are. Not only do they have very emotive facial animation, but the addition of ears and a tail just adds even more depth into showing each character's feelings.
me and my friends were fans of Lackadaisy since we were 13 years old! We are now in our 30s if that tells you anything! As Kansas City residents we were enthralled with the history of Missouri put into the comic and it was like we got our first Christmas getting this pilot! It is heartwarming to know many new fans are discovering this gem.
As someone who was NOT aware of the years of Lackadaisy content before coming across this, it speaks a lot to the pilot’s quality just how quick and hard it sold me. It was stumbling across the pilot that made me check out the comic.
I read whole comic in 2 days after I watched pilot. Sometimes I hate my reading speed. Also, that was my first time when I thought that animation was good (I know that when small studio creates animation that doesn't look worse than big studios it's kind of cool, but for me it's just another cartoon like all of them) and then saw sabersparks comment. My first thought was "if I thought animation and style of this is really cool, then his reaction was like: omg how sometimes people create thing like that?!
Fyi, the creators of this pilot are currently croudfunding season 1 of Lackadaisy until the end of August. If anyone here is in love with it too then id implor you to go support it. As of writing this its just got enough funding for 2 episodes, so heres hoping for a full 5 episodes!
Haven't followed Lackadaisy since middle school (like 2014) and had no idea about this project until I saw the thumbnail of this video. Watched the pilot and it looks absolutely stunning!
My literal favorite part of the entire animation is seeing the little sketch details behind the full coloring every now and then. My favorite thing about art is the love and work that go into it and I feel like people often feel this obligation to polish their art so, so much. When you can see the sketches you get a little bit of the behind the scenes and it feels so wonderful to me to get the tiniest little glimpse into the process behind such a wonderful art piece.
This this this. Seeing the sketch lines in the final product was such a warm and welcome reminder that this stuff is hand drawn frame by frame by the hands of one team, not outsourced to tweening studios or automated software.
I wasn't sure how I felt about that at first honestly, since everything is so fluid and well detailed. Although as the pilot went on them being there even AS everything was so fluid and detailed grew on me I'm a fan of it now! :)
I've been following the Lackadaisy comic for years and it's so amazing to see the characters and the setting being put in motion by this gorgeous animation. It brought such a bright smile to my face.
I've scrolled passed lackadaisy so many times and this encouraged me to watch it, I'm now amazed and I really want more. We should all support it as much as possible!
The best part about prozd voicing Mordecai is the fact that he did a whole bunch of comic dubs in the early days, which brought a lot of attention to Lackadaisy
lackadaisy was such an iconic webcomic and the pilot really cemented it as a wonderful piece of art that should be celebrated forever. i wish so much that youtube will give the creator, artists, and actors the chance to take this series further. the pilot made me NEEEED more
As a proud St. Louisan who loves history (especially local history) and cats, I fell in love with the Lackadaisy cats comic online in middle school over a decade ago when I found out about it at a local indie comic event. It was the perfect mix of so many of my interests, the characters are fantastic, the art is gorgeous, and the story is great. I'm ecstatic that the pilot was fantastic and got so much positive attention! I hope we get a lot more Lackadaisy animation! 😁
Lackadaisy’s pilot actually impressed me more than the pilots for Hazbin Hotel, Helluva Boss, and Murder drones. I think what sets it apart for me is the pacing and how it introduces all the characters without it feeling like it’s forcing you to know who they are and what they’re about from the getgo. Furries are flirting in the replies. Make love not war.
@@hajimeyoshinori4161 Fr Hazbin and helluva is mostly boring cus they have nothing funny to put in except just "heyyy look theyre fucking!! haha funny"

Oh man Saber talking about how much personality and style and expression the character designs have!! I remember back in the early days of the comic she would release articles about her artistic process and I distinctly remember the one where she talked about exactly that. Originally, the characters were conceived as human but she didn’t feel like it captured those qualities well so she changed the characters to anthro cats SPECIFICALLY to get the qualities Saber is raving about! That makes me so happy
From these few clips, it even seems like they have their guns correct. The tommy gun is hard to mess up of course, but I love that one of the gangsters has a BAR. 9:44 even in the lighting of the scene, they nailed the silhouette of the rifle. 2:50 the front barrel of the 1911 looks right. There’s so much detail. I even like how the character’s left thumb is positioned correctly for two handed pistol shooting.
Lackadaisy is one of those cartoons where the animation and artwork ALONE proves that it’s a great cartoon. You might be thinking, “but have you looked into the plot? Have you seen the reviews first? What abou-“ I don’t care I don’t care I don’t care I don’t care I don’t care I don’t care I don’t care It’s ALREADY a masterpiece!
As someone with insanely bad ADHD, Saber ranting and running on and on about how awesome Lackadaisy is... Yes. So relatable. Bro is in love with it and I can relate to it. Lackadaisy is amazing. RUclips animation is insane. I can't wait to see where animation goes!
I never heard of Lackadaisy before the pilot, and it unlocked a feeling of nostalgia I didn't know I had. Its, like, rewatching a late 80s animated movie from your childhood again as an adult. I don't know how else to explain it.
To your point about the animation and the quality between Helluva and Lackadaisy, I feel like Lackadaisy belongs to the world of HBO dramas like westworld. Slow, focused, deliberate material that has good gags that are not too annoying. Whereas Helluva is more a Adult Swim syndication with wall to wall gags with heartfealt moments inbetween. Great shows in their own respective rights! Just so happy to see these animations getting more and more popular!
I watched the pilot before knowing it was a webcomic, and knowing that it's been a thing since 2006 makes so much sense. In only 27 minutes they show how truly confident they are in their story, writing and worldbuilding like they've been figuring it out and expanding for years (which I now know they have!). INCREDIBLE work
I REALLY hope that they keep the sketchiness, where you can see their blocking lines in the future episodes. I love rough, genuine process details. I loved seeing the sketchy details in older animated movies like The Aristocats.
I’m the exact opposite of neutral about the sketchlines. I simultaneously was offput and taken aback by them, but also heavily endeared and wondered by them! Whether they stay or leave, I’ll love it just the same though!
I hope they don't. I like seeing the rough animation in the credits, but a line in the middle of someone's face is distracting (dalmations/robin hood only have them because the Xerox process was much cheaper for Disney).
One of the things I REALLY like is how all the eyes are BRIGHT. It pulls you to their faces, and so you get more of their expression and mood. And everyone has different variations on said eyes. Either the color, the shape, the pupil, or all of the above. It's a neat trick. And also very cat-like too.
One of my favorite things from the pilot, even if it maybe wasn't meant to be noticed, is how you can still see the rough lines that make the characters' body, particularly the head and tail, in some of the frames. It shows that real human people worked on it.
that's actually intentional and your reaction is exactly what they wanted! the creators wanted to show people this is in fact 2d animation and it's proud 👍
yeah, reminds me of old disney movies like the Aristocats, where you can see rough sketches. (i didn't pick the Aristocats as an example bc cat. It really was the first one that came to mind. Cindarella (old ver) also has some of the rough sketches too)
@@serinawong3019101 Dalmatians and The Sword in the Stone are others with their sketch lines still visible. I think it brings more character to an animated movie and I love it!😊
@@meganjaime7728 yeah, same. I feel like it also shows how genuine it is too. Lots of animation today have to sacrifice quality for quantity, using puppets or rigs.
It was intentional. As a matter of fact, those aren’t the original reference lines. They were added back in after the animation was finished to give it a more raw feel
You praised the animation a lot, but for me, the sound design was impeccable. The BAR and Thompson sounded SPOT ON, and the handguns had a fantastic crack to every shot. That's not to mention the incredible music that went with it.
Also it would've been so easy to give everyone a drum mag Tommy gun because that pretty much says "this is set in the 1920s", but the BAR is an underutilised period correct firearm and I like seeing it.
@@spamviking I did not know that BARs were even used in the 20s. Apart from their lack of pop culture representation, I didn’t know they were really used in the 20’s; practically speaking, SMGs-like the Thomson-seem far more convenient and practical, not to mention lighter.
@@spamviking And it was a *chopped* BAR, which was something that the gangsters of the era did to make it easier to carry in and out of cars. Also, fun detail, the guns are 3D models, and there's a visible goof as Mordecai uses his 1911, there's no ammunition loaded in the gun, as while looking down the barrel *right* before he fires, clearly shows an empty chamber and an exposed firing pin.
@@TrinityCore60 Apprantlly while the Thomson is more associated with Gangsters due to pop culture, the BAR was the actual common choice of weapon for gangsters, as they were in plentifull slupply in National Guard Armories that were raided by said gangs. Also while Hollywood would have you think the drum magazine for the Thompson was a cool choice (and yeah it does look cool) it was far from practical, hell drum magazines in general are an inpractical nightmare. They are heavier than box magazines, more difficult to load and worst of all,the internal mechanism is easy to jam. So if your a Gangster in the 20's, yeah your Thompson can put out a lot of fire power, but if it empties or jams, you look like a dunce while the other guy with the BAR (or an SMG with a box magazine) is sitting pretty.
I'm so happy that there's other people who are just dying for hand drawn films sometimes I think that only artists can understand how amazing it is to see films like this.
2D hand-drawn animation in my opinion is the true magic of creation and life. Sure it takes a long time to make and it cost a lot of money, but sometimes it can be worth it all.
It's like a real animalised version of the 1920s prohibition the alcohol ban and the mafia. The great depression vibe really nailed it it's almost 100% historically accurate!
I love all the tiny details of each character. Taking your example of the teeth, Rocky almost always has his teeth over his mouth so he always has this unhinged smile going on. Freckle’s half-unhinged smile when he first got the gun also just scratches the itch in my brain. You will never find a background character not moving, everyone is reacting to other things people are doing. Taking the scene where Rocky puts the drinks on the table, you can see Zib in the background following his movements with his eyes and reacting to him. When Ivy asked Freckle to dance, you can see Mitzi give a soft smile while Viktor stares daggers. (Mr.Sable just suffers while drinking) I JUST LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS PILOT SO MUCH
@@JesusIsKing_AlphaandOmega I love how they still act like cats in spite of having human-equivalent intellect and personalities. Rocky constantly bopping Freckle in the face with his tail as Freckle tries to bat it away is just... beyond precious.
I love how Rocky's tail fuzzes out when the dynamite goes off even though he's the one causing it. It's such a cat detail. I love when people design and animate anthro characters with accuracy and character, it gives them so much life.
@@LoveMyUnusual Yeah, totally. I mean, if someone's going to the trouble of imagining what these characters would look like as anthro cats, then you should make sure to capitalize on this by making them, well, catlike.
A part I really enjoyed that's not getting talked about as much was at the end, where we see Atlas' "ghost". Considering the fact he's dead, he is the core of this comic. Without Atlas, there is no plot, no intrigue, no mystery. It's such an effective show of how death changes things, and how you learn about him through the people that were around him. Having him there while Mitizi dreams is such a beautiful detail.
As a St. Louis resident with extended family from the New Orleans area, I was so excited to see 1) that Lackadaisy is set in St. Louis and 2) two of the characters have Cajun accents. It was so much fun to see parts of my family reflected in an unexpected place.
Personally I'm in love with how you can still see the construction sketches in the animation. It reminds me of older Disney 2D classics where you could glimpse sketch lines. It hints at the process and acts like a human fingerprint on the animation. I love it so much.
Even if they won't use AI to animate 2d. I always believed after seeing Corridor Crew that if you are willing. You can animate any artsyle no matter how Physically impossible it would be.
It will absolutely take a long time, but I'm pretty sure the whole team wasn't there 3 years ago, and I hope that means the next episodes will come faster.
This show is clearly for adults but unlike certain adult shows .. this one proves that it can be an for adults without overdoing it with the cussing or sex jokes ( even tho it didn’t have any ) but yeah I wish more adult shows can be like that
One thing to note here is that Prohibition went into effect in January of 1920, whereas this series takes place around 1927, when the law had been in effect for years. Speakeasies had been open for years not long after the law was enacted, so I’m thinking that there’s some OTHER reason the club’s fallen on hard times BESIDES Prohibition.
I’ve been keeping up with Lackadaisy for a good while I was really eager to watch the final product. I’ve already watched it several times and seeing Lackadaisy get so much attention and love is amazing.
The art is so fluid like it FLOWS. ITS SO BOUNCY. I saw this pilot after watching an animator stream on it. And I saw ure comment, rlly cool to see you like it too.
I am already prepared to give Lackadaisy money to keep it going. It’s so good and deserves to be supported in entirety! Not just for the sake of the art but because the work itself is artistically sublime.
One of the things people seem to criticize it about, is it being "rough". It isn't rough, it's made that way on purpose to mimic old school, hand-drawn animation! And that alone had to have taken a LOT of effort! That's the kind of extra attention to detail I've always loved about the comics and Tracy's style in general.
Everyone’s comparing this to Vivzie’s works, which I think is fine, but it’s getting a little tiring. The style and premise of the shows are very different, and people are getting too crazy with the comparisons. Overall, the pilot is amazing- it stuggles with a bit of character muddling, with not really completely introducing them but also giving a lot of personality at the same time (if that makes sense), but everything else is just fucking… perfection. I want the pilot to explode so we can get more!
Only thing you can compare is Michael Kovac VA in both work, but that's about it, both animations are great and I'm glad we are getting these in the spotlight
There's a lot of crossover here between Hazbin & Lackadaisy's animators, that's probably why. I'm pretty sure a lot of the Hazbin people are friends with the Lackadaisy ones, even the ones who didn't work on both. I know they did a Hunicast together.
This has more quality in its animation with full on lighting, shading and effects over Viv's more simple basic style. Dare say the budget for this pilot would've been quadruple what one episode costs to make for Viv.
For those who may not get it. Tracy Butler started this project in 2006 and over the years she worked hard with her team to recruit voice actors and skilled animators. Now she released a pilot and hopefully like Vivziepop, she too may be picked up by a major studio to produce Lackadaisy as a show. I love independent animators.
I would like them to be picked up by a smaller studio though. A24 is probably the most corporate entity I'd be comfortable coming near these projects, and that's only because A24 has managed to prove that they care about the integrity and creativity of their partners with the Don't Hug Me I'm Scared show and how Hazbin Hotel is coming along.
So we got Murder Drones by GLITCH STUDIOS, Helluva Boss by VIVZIEPOPS(idk if i spelled right), and now Lackadaisy.. 2023 is the year of Indie Animation. As Holywood collapses, smaller studios rise.
I'm someone who has never heard of Lackadaisy before, never read the web series or nothing. I had no idea it was even a thing until I saw the pilot in my recommended and decided to check it out. I was absolutely blown away by the quality of it all. The animation, the characters, the voice acting, the historical detail, all of it is incredible. Like you said, I can not believe something of this quality is free on RUclips. It's amazing how this one 20 minute pilot is so much better than a lot of shows on big streaming platforms right now. I really really hope this is just the beginning and we can see more episodes uploaded here soon.
I loved the Lackadaisy pilot, It's an absolute masterpiece! I especially love that it takes place during the era of Prohibition America a popular time period where gangsters and Bootleggers gained fame in fact some of my favorite parts of this animations is with the firearms, Because guns like the M1 Thompson were very popular with gangsters.
The animation and especially the comic are so detailed! I sat and stared for a whole minute looking at the thin strokes in their fur. It looked like I could touch it and it would be soft. Everything in Lackadaisy is so impressive a gorgeous!
For anyone wondering if you should read the comic, I started reading yesterday and am now 60+ pages into the Lackadaisy webcomic and oh my god do I love Freckles. If you thought his car gunner moment was something, wait till you see him earn his Three of Clubs. Freckles looks like a puppy, but the dog in him is full grown and unmuzzled when the muzzle gets to blazing.
I think what makes freckle work so well is on the most part he is a very caring and sweet guy. He just also happens to be the gun equivalent of pyromaniac, a deep mix of rage and joy willing to be unleashed. My favourite part of the pilot is the slight mad smile he gets when given the gun. He is mroe like his cousin rocky than you think. Both of them with a signature unhinged laugh.
@@crenando8259the same can be said about that whole family unit; not just Rocky and Freckle, but Freckle's mum as well. Tracy has always played really deep into the whole "good wholesome Irish Catholic values" thing, and that's why Rocky and Freckle have such solid character backbones. Rocky rejected the rigidity of his aunt's raising of him from an early age, seeking a bohemian lifestyle as soon as he could get out of that household. Freckle took everything his mother had to say to heart, but that also made him be an absolute dork when Rocky first introduced him to the rum runner's life. As well as unleashing all that pent-up frustration at being so repressed. Even Freckle's mum is a character; a real battle-axe of a woman. Saying that, she once pretended to be the Voice of God to stop a very young Rocky tripping on sugar going to school with pancake sleeves. It made the priest at Confession go "I'm sorry, you did _what_ now?"
As someone who reads the webcomic on Webtoons back then, the Lackadaisy pilot perfectly captures the magical moment of the Roaring '20s that gives The Great Gatsby a run of its money.
Thank you for making a video about this amazing pilot! Everybody in the team did such a great job. I've enjoyed every second of it! =3 They deserve all the attention and praise!
Animating on this was a dream come true. Thank you for making a video on it Saber! Happy to see you have YT indie animation's back!! One thing I always thought was great about Lackadaisy was that when asked why the characters were all cats, why not just have them be people instead, Tracy's answer was just "cats are more expressive and fun to draw." And I totally get it!
I also find it 10x more interesting to look at, they have their own whole aesthetic going on and it makes me think about their cat filled universe.
I draw cats exclusively and I couldn’t agree more. They’re far more fun then anything else
The downside to them being cats is that idiotic onlookers just summarize it as "furry content" without bothering to do any research.
Mordecai’s “ticking” he has while aiming his pistol is EXTREMELY accurate in the world of marksmanship. The world around you fades and it’s just you, the target, and the gun. Praise for this show so far.

Mordecai ear twitch looks so cute!
Don't forget the repositioning of the ears. That's a crazy awesome detail
Well not dead but put into a medical coma aka on hiatus until pilot is finished.
And we'll likely wait even longer, as the artist takes the first steps to making Lackadaisy an animated series.
Damn, really? I just got into the comics, thanks to the short. Talk about ironic. :\
i ended up binge reading the entire series after i saw the pilot :)
@Eltrio2 I believe the writer has addressed it and said she does plan to resume the comic soon, so you shouldn't have to wait very long. At the very least there is confirmation she plans to continue it eventually.
Summary: a nearly 20 year old web comic finally made its well-deserved animation debut and it was near perfection on all fronts.
@@anasevi9456 Yes! And I really hope it gets turned into an hour long movie! 😄
@@MurkyMambo and that's why it's a pilot lol
@@MurkyMambodawg you’re claiming their writing is cliche when you said they should have “the height of the prohibition.” On the beginning card. Yknow having two “the’s” in your sentence sounds so much clunkier right?
I watched the pilot and personally love how Freckle is characterized. The shy timid guy going crazy the second that he touches a gun but being very nervous about that because he knows he goes out of control. It’s just SO good!
And then him talking about a big fire 🔥 I wanna know more about his past
Calvin do be that way
You think he's crazy here? You should she him in the comic. He bodies four people the first time he picks up a Tommy Gun
I lmao when he growled and released his claws from the back seat. 😂 "Sorry, Sorry, its like there's a fire...!" 😂
Freckle is my favorite charecter!
Its even more fun as she baseed in on real cats on hers, lik freckles being super sweet an adorable, if not going psycho battle mode.
Funny how Prozd has been voice acting Mordekai for like 10 years in fandubs, and he had this same voice prepared. For 10 years. It straight up sounds the same, and has always fit perfectly the character, was phenomenal on the pilot, his voicing of Mordekai is just perfect

It's like telling a Americana folk tale that's part of your history.
Likewise, although I live in a little river town on the Missouri now. We were the ones cooking the booze for STL 😂
I think Tracy was from here!
Y’all should read the comic too! It goes even further in depth
The other thing I like about Sungwon voicing Mordecai is that he actually did dubs of the lackadaisy comic in the early days of his channel, with mordecai being a prevelant character in the ones he voiced, so it’s really cool
To see him voice him in the official release
It’s crazy to me that I watched those dubs so many years ago and now I’m hearing his voice in the official pilot

And Sungwon over the years becoming a professional voice actor working on many projects is great :)

They have been nominated for a few awards and won since actually! (The comics, I'm not sure if these rewards were big, but they won something)
OMFG, YES. You hit the nail on the head with this. This is maturity in truth, and those "adult" cartoons are childish.
The writing quality just isn't there and it seems to be putting in stuff for shock value to distract from that
YESSSS EXACTLY! THIS IS WHAT WE NEED TO BALANCE THINGS OUT.

The thing I like about the character designs is that you can totally imagine their human counterparts just by looking at them.
About 10 years ago there was a page in the comic Extras section where the author basically said she can draw humans perfectly well, but she finds cats much more expressive. The page included human versions of all major characters. It's probably still there if you care to look.

That animation is smooth as butter. the creators didn't have to go that hard, but they did. The only minor quibble I have is how the sketch lines aren't always removed (If that's intentional then so be it).

They absolutely deserve all the attention theyve gotten and I'm SO happy that they're continuing to receive it
This pilot episode is better than the entire Velma show
And its animation is miles better. In Velma they could not even animate well scenes with guns.

Same here! I’ve been waiting for this film and I’m so proud of the author. I want everyone to see this work.
Yea I was SHOCKED there’s even a webcomic! I just kept a eye on this pilot since I just seen it one day. Really cool to think that this pilot, with the added web comic AND the amount of sharing I seen, this could be a big thing!!!!
Ditto! I remember seeing them ^^
What I really find amazing about the animation is how expressive the characters are. Not only do they have very emotive facial animation, but the addition of ears and a tail just adds even more depth into showing each character's feelings.
The creator actually commented on making them cats specifically for the extra additions to FURTHER express their characters.
yeah! not to mention the little cat noises in the sound design :)
Power of authro characters! They're so much more interesting than humans
@@FemboyJoe I'm not surprised. Her attention to detail comes across so clearly.
fr!! i was super pumped when mordecai(?) lashed his tail after missing his shot in the pilot. it totally conveyed "damn it."
The cancellation of Final Space broke my heart, but projects like Lackadaisy gives me hope for the future of animation.
This was a good pilot show, but it was actually Hullabaloo and the Brave Locomotive that gave me hope for animation. At least 2D hand-drawn animation.
me and my friends were fans of Lackadaisy since we were 13 years old!
I found it exceptionally distracting. That should be the FIRST THING removed when a scene is complete. It looked like they were PROUD of this.
Yeah lol that’s the point

As a proud St. Louisan who loves history (especially local history) and cats, I fell in love with the Lackadaisy cats comic online in middle school over a decade ago when I found out about it at a local indie comic event. It was the perfect mix of so many of my interests, the characters are fantastic, the art is gorgeous, and the story is great. I'm ecstatic that the pilot was fantastic and got so much positive attention! I hope we get a lot more Lackadaisy animation! 😁
Technically zoot suits are 1940s. The term you want is "pinstripe suits".

I wasn’t even BORN yet when this comic came out, and I am just now discovering Lackadaisy. It’s absolutely incredible! Truly a precedent for animation
Me being born in 2005: 🕺
Oh man Saber talking about how much personality and style and expression the character designs have!!
Same, I'm a 2009 and I found Lackadaisy when the pilot came out. I'm so glad to be in the animation community, Lackadaisy is a masterpiece.
2003 I remember reading it when I was a kid
I think i just turned to dust
What abou-“
I don’t care I don’t care I don’t care I don’t care I don’t care I don’t care I don’t care

As someone who also has ridiculously bad ADHD, I agree lol. I've been hyperfixating on Lackadaisy since the pilot started production.
I never heard of Lackadaisy before the pilot, and it unlocked a feeling of nostalgia I didn't know I had. Its, like, rewatching a late 80s animated movie from your childhood again as an adult. I don't know how else to explain it.
It kind of feels like a mix of Lupin III with Cats Don't Dance or something for me. :p
Oh infelt that. Like i watched and got nostalgic for an era almost a century ago
When the movie from your child hood is ACTUALLY BETTER THAN YOU REMEMBERED IT
Side note but istg if this show gets cancelled due to improper funding, I'm leaving the internet.
I watched the prologue yesterday. And i LOVE it.
Or 101 Dalmatians and Belleville Rendez-vous.
i agree but seeing the guide lines in the faces all the time is a bit annoying for me, but the animation is amazing
I hope they get rid of the sketch lines. I like animations that look like they're completely finished. I disliked seeing the sketch lines in this.
I hope Lackadaisy does their history research and implement some quality details or references into the show.
@spamviking Also, the female antagonist actually does walking fire with it.
(Mr.Sable just suffers while drinking)
I JUST LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS PILOT SO MUCH
Also the minor cat noises as the characters do things ia on point

If it wasn't full of cats, I would totally go watch this
Absolutely would want more Animated Lackadaisy. But also considering how absolutely insane it is to animate it... well... I can only hope.
Don't worry we will get more of that that's a guarantee however it may take multiple months or a year to do so but the wait is worth it

The reason for the speakeasy's decline is due to the former's boss' death, which caused Mordecai to go rogue and cripple fellow hatchet-man Viktor.
but you know. that’s a spoiler. But yeah, old boss died & competition got rough.

I am already prepared to give Lackadaisy money to keep it going. It’s so good and deserves to be supported in entirety! Not just for the sake of the art but because the work itself is artistically sublime.
I knew you would make a video about this after I saw your comment on the pilot itself
Insane how the comic has been around longer than me.
My farts are better than Saberspark’s farts
Only thing you can compare is Michael Kovac VA in both work, but that's about it, both animations are great and I'm glad we are getting these in the spotlight
There's a lot of crossover here between Hazbin & Lackadaisy's animators, that's probably why. I'm pretty sure a lot of the Hazbin people are friends with the Lackadaisy ones, even the ones who didn't work on both. I know they did a Hunicast together.
Well her team did help with this😅
This has more quality in its animation with full on lighting, shading and effects over Viv's more simple basic style.
Fair point, most corporate entitys are pure scumbaggery. Especially with how willing they are to suck the soul out of anything.

M1921 Thompson*
The M1 was a WW2 era one. Before the more popular WW2 M1A1 witch added the protection ears next to the rear sight.
Didn't even watch this video yet but the title alone made me watch the pilot, so I am here to thank you!
I already thought he was such a silly little guy from the pilot defo reading the comic now
I think what makes freckle work so well is on the most part he is a very caring and sweet guy.
Freckle.
As in singular.
@@LathropLdSTh I see. His human design even has a single freckle.
