We had a kid on our team back in high school whos primary attack was the Syracuse. Worked 95% of the time for him, even on kids that placed high at counties. He was insanely strong though, and weirdly enough he would stand when hitting it. Unfortunately he didn't care about wrestling. He beat the kid who took 2nd at counties that year and missed his weight by .1 at the qualifier and instead of losing it, he said he didn't care and just went home. So sad.

Fireman's was my favorite takedown. One of my teammates would counter it the way you showed, although I don't think he knew it was essentially a syracuse...lol. It used to make me so mad 🙂

Awesome counter to a Fireman's Carry. Straight into a Full Alch submission from Catch wrestling.

Awesome moves. Looks like that trap on the fireman's might work against some high crotches too since a decent amount of people will leave their left hand lingering on your right arm for a bit too long.

    hey Coach!
Im just seeing the Syracuse for the first time - and im more involved in Judo - but it Looks quite effective to me.
I think the probability of getting countered is not very high in Judo because no one knows this move there anyway
    But just in case -
Would it be an effective "counter" to the "sneaky trap" to Keep the armpit closed? to deny you the "underhook" under my left arm, that one which is going for your arm?
seems like that could take away quite a bit of your "pinning potential"..

Why is it called the Syracuse?

I learned it from gene mills, who coached at that college. Probably had something to do with.

That what I was guessing, I’m from Syracuse, used to have the wrestle his school, it’s a real shame the SU dropped their program.

Bombastik derTeutone Owings, the guy who beat Gable, hit Gable with the Syracuse a few times. It wasn’t necessarily the deciding factor but Owings did hit it and win. The match is insane actually; you should check it out. Link below
