I’ve been watching your videos, this is my first year wrestling and I’m in 7th, i used this move tonight and got my fourth pin in a row, I’m now 4-0 and undefeated
Really good move, I've been caught with it and you roll straight to your back just to relieve the pressure. Even if your like me, and hate going to your back.
I learned a similar shoulder lock year ago in a traditional Jujitsu school. But this looks meaner and more powerful, so I'm gonna start trying this on guys instead. Many thanks!
I never heard of "The Beef Wellington", but it's exactly the same move we call "The Power Underhook" which sets up all kinds of submissions, knees, leverages, unbalances, sweeps, throws, weapons attacks, head butts...you know the drill. It's interesting but not surprising to see that other functional grapplers have similar moves to us. We employ different hand grips and whatnot because we're not hampered by the rules of wrestling, so we have a lot more freedom in target selection, weapon use, etc. But this is an outstanding video. Good work, Jason. And let the brutha win in a demo every once in a while, dang! LOLOL.
I’m a freshmen and got a concussion on my first meet, and this is my week back. I have little experience and long in a very big tourney this week as a heavyweight -220 wrestler , thanks for the good move!
Can you reccomend ways to setting this up? I see you kind of control / push away his right arm then get head control , followed by underhook , immediately clasping hands. Is this best way to set it up and can you offer few tips to set this up?
Jason Layton as a beginner in a new school a former wrestler taughtme this the first day I met him. He says its good for me as a beginner and a bigger guy. I really like it. Then I tried finding it on youtube and your page popped up. I like your channel , thanks
you can do a lot of shots from an underhook by throwing it up or even circling towards the underhook arm and bumping him and grabbing a single leg ( no shot )
I wrestle in middle school but never learned that and 1 question on the underhook wouldnt that break his arm at the shoulder or is your body or arm protecting it
It won't break their arm quickly if they get hurt and have to stop it doesnt matter I'd the move is legal. If they dknt go to their back as long as you keep it legal you will win
Question, a lot of meets they won't let you lock your hands, don't know why, just the way they do it but can you still run this effectively without locking hands?
Look man I've wrestled 11 years n I've tried this move for the past 2 nights n for some reason I can't seem to get it to work could you give me some tips
Make sure that when you drill it, his shoulder is completely locked to your chest. Once you tighten up on it, he should be completely trapped in the position. Also, make sure your grip is the correct orientation.
Virgilio Libo-on you didnt have an strong enough underhook and judo guys love using overhooks for throws. I love judo and judo throws and if I have an overhook I'm looking to toss but if someone has a strong underhook and elevating the elbow (let alone what we see here), thats not really the time to try a throw
Probably you're using it against more upright posture? If so you need to be aware of your and their balance. I imagine that you need to be able to break their posture at least slightly and then reinforce and then drop pressure on them. The pressure that the reinforced under gives is very similar to how a wizzer is used offensively and requires your body to be a little bit above theirs to pressure downward. If you just try to reinforce when their upright then, unless you're much taller or stronger, you're not going to be able to get the angle to control them when you reinforce and instead will be in an awkward position yourself. Hope that helps. Obviously this is just some guy on the internet trying to imagine quite what you're dealing with.
Xander Crantz it’s legal, if you lock around someone’s head without an arm then it’s illegal. If you lock someone’s arm without the head it’s perfectly fine.
Michael M not in this form, but the concept is useful, especially in the seatbelt/whizzed position. There are superior attacks to try with underhook a imo.
Im personally not a fan of this variant of the underhook, only because any decent wrestler isnt going to try and shoot when they’re in that position, they will square up to ease the pressure. Underhooks in general are a powerful series I just dont like this variant for upper echelon wrestling
Jason Layton My two boys like this move because it can be used as a take down setup to their mrkle which is their main top move... however it doesn't result in 2 points that often and I'm not sure why. Sometimes partners just fight it off; hip to hip and "yes" sometimes they limp arm out. Yesterday, for example my 15 yo son hit it from a standing position in response to a whizzer and got countered with a throw and roll. Afterwards his partner asked, "Where did you learn that move?". My son said, "Online". Partner said, "Stick with it. Nobody else knows to throw like me from there". I'm looking at the video many, many times and best I can tell is that this may be best as a big guy move where there's not a lot of space once big arms are locked around a big "beefy" shoulder. My boys are 95 and 115 lbers. We all really want this to work because it is can be a key link in the shoot->get-whizzered->beef-wellington->merkle chain. I guess they will get bigger soon, but I don't want them to lose confidence in the move. Any feedback?
I gave up on the merkel a long time ago, as I think body locking is superior (but slightly more complicated). Look at my whizzer video, I believe I explain it there as a counter to the limp arm.
Dont call it perfect. i tried this move 5 times today and got headthrown every single time. this move give the opponent a perfect opportunity for. a head throw.
I’ve been watching your videos, this is my first year wrestling and I’m in 7th, i used this move tonight and got my fourth pin in a row, I’m now 4-0 and undefeated
I used this against a tough girl and won in 14 seconds. Thanks so much
Really good move, I've been caught with it and you roll straight to your back just to relieve the pressure. Even if your like me, and hate going to your back.
Thank you sir im going to add this to my son's arsenal. You always put out good stuff.
This move will work great for my wrestling tournament tomorrow! Thank you
thanks im in 8th grade and am trying out for a highschool wrestling team
3 years later, you crushin kids at wrestlin Dark Ace?!
I’m in 7th, and I’ve been on the wrestling team since last year, and I wrestled in clubs before that. This move will help you a lot!
Can I get a life story lol
Damn I'm in highschool wrestling rn
well presented, very informative
I learned a similar shoulder lock year ago in a traditional Jujitsu school. But this looks meaner and more powerful, so I'm gonna start trying this on guys instead. Many thanks!
this looks amazing....will try it

Really Strong, i never wrestle but is usefull In my BJJ journey ! Aprecciate thanks
Sick move!
This is so good
I did that move today at practice and it felt so good.
as a bjj guy, I see this and it looks like they feed you an arm to submit with on the landing. looks really simple and powerful!
Have you tried uchi mata or harai goshi with this grip? I want to, but I'm worried I might hurt the other guy's shoulder.
thanks this helps
Thanks that really going to help me at my next tourney
I’m a freshmen and got a concussion on my first meet, and this is my week back. I have little experience and long in a very big tourney this week as a heavyweight -220 wrestler , thanks for the good move!
Bro this is my favorite move my coach thought it individually to me

Ottima mossa.. La uso quando faccio grappling

almost like the hill lock
This is realy awesome I’m in eighth grade and want to school the kids on my team that have been wrestling sense the sixth grade
Can you possibly use this takedown with a pin?
Would this work in lower weight classes?
Can you reccomend ways to setting this up? I see you kind of control / push away his right arm then get head control , followed by underhook , immediately clasping hands. Is this best way to set it up and can you offer few tips to set this up?
joeyoung8 this isn't my go to from this position, but it's an option.usually I just grab it if I can.
Jason Layton as a beginner in a new school a former wrestler taughtme this the first day I met him. He says its good for me as a beginner and a bigger guy. I really like it. Then I tried finding it on youtube and your page popped up. I like your channel , thanks
I reckon you'll get an "potentially dangerous" if he keep circling and fighting it ?
i sometimes try this move but unfortunately it is easy to get out of if the opponent overpowers you or wiggles his way out agrresively
Te only way they won't let you lock hands is of one or both of his knees are down
what if they grab your other wrist is there any underhook finishes with your legs
you can do a lot of shots from an underhook by throwing it up or even circling towards the underhook arm and bumping him and grabbing a single leg ( no shot )
I wrestle in middle school but never learned that and 1 question on the underhook wouldnt that break his arm at the shoulder or is your body or arm protecting it
Just break their arm its okay
It won't break their arm quickly if they get hurt and have to stop it doesnt matter I'd the move is legal. If they dknt go to their back as long as you keep it legal you will win
Question, a lot of meets they won't let you lock your hands, don't know why, just the way they do it but can you still run this effectively without locking hands?
Shawn Hanna if he goes to his knees release and go to an underhook and front headlock(cow catcher)
+Frank Sailor you just can't lock hands while you're on his hips there are plenty of moves you can run that you have to lock hands that are allowed
Look man I've wrestled 11 years n I've tried this move for the past 2 nights n for some reason I can't seem to get it to work could you give me some tips

I tried this in judo class and kept getting hip tossed before I can get them to the ground. Any tips?
The gi makes things a bit different. I would imagine it would still work, but I don't have much experience in judo. Good luck!
Virgilio Libo-on this is not Judi it's wrestling

Reinforced underhook vs pinch headlock...pros and cons of each?
Duke crystal once you have them locked, there are no cons if you know them well (you should win). It's more whether you can get to them...
Wouldn't that be illegal because your locking hand with out the head.
+Zander Krantz It is legal, you are not allowed to lock around the body while in the top position.
Tinderboxfox Fox you have the arm
Xander Crantz it’s legal, if you lock around someone’s head without an arm then it’s illegal. If you lock someone’s arm without the head it’s perfectly fine.

Can this be used on big guys
Zachary Curtiss yes
Could this be used on folkstyle?
Yes
Could your opponent headlock you?
Not once your are good at it. If you apply pressure correctly they will be unable to do anything other than lose. it is really tight on the shoulder.
Will this work in college?
Michael M not in this form, but the concept is useful, especially in the seatbelt/whizzed position. There are superior attacks to try with underhook a imo.

Also, is there any possible way to counter this move?
Maybe, but not once it is locked up tight...
Jason Layton

Sergio Ramirez yes.
In folkstyle can I lock my hands like that?
yes
holy mac! this move sets me up straight for an step around arm bar. LOVE your videos Jason, my BJJ game just gets better. thank you.
Dont call it perfect. i tried this move 5 times today and got headthrown every single time. this move give the opponent a perfect opportunity for. a head throw.
Against any good wrestler it is garbage
Joe Adams get a good setup
I've seen guys try this and just get cradled(somehow).
