  • I thought I'd join in the rant about Panasonic, the Lumix S9 and camera reviewers.
And I would love to hear your thoughts on this. Is it all blown out of proportion, or is there a serious problem in the world of camera reviews?

I’m not talking about all the influencers, and some of them, especially the veterans, had done a pretty good job. But some of the newer ones are so quick to dismiss the shortcomings of the camera. It’s like there’s no EVF, oh but I guess you don’t need it… There’s no mechanical shutter, oh the electrical shutter is just as good and you don’t need mechanical… oh there’s not hot shoe, you guessed it, you don’t need it. Some of the videos got really ugly IMO.
For what it CAN do, I know it does it spectacularly, but if this camera is targeted at the beginners, as some influencers say that buyers buy it because of it’s simplicity and don’t care about all the features, well if they don’t care about it, why would they invest $1500 plus lenses to buy this FF camera in the first place when the iPhones of the past 2 years or an EV1 can do the same for much less? This logic contradicts itself.
This camera has an identity crisis IMO, it’s like trying to compete with iPhone, 1” sensor cameras and ZVE1 at the same time. And if history teaches us anything, jack of all trades and master of none won’t yield any success. Because if you think about it, if you want the simplicity and small package, you’d probably use this with a small lens, and today’s iPhone an 1” sensor will probably do just as well for TikTok vertical videos. And for the more serious content creators, not having hot shoe for mic is probably a deal breaker for many (I mean even a phone can connect a microphone). If you want a small camera that is as small as the X100VI, the F8 manual lens is laughable (I’d however get the 35mm F1.7 instead), and no mechanical shutter? And if you’re more serious content creator, you wouldn’t even touch this camera as the ZVE1 and it’s sibling S5 will do a much better job for a few hundred bucks more, and when you take into the account the lenses you need to get, that few hundred becomes a smaller fraction of total spending. So I really don’t know who this camera is for, because if you ask any of those influencers if they will buy this as their first or only camera, 90% of them will say no.
You have to overcome these shortcomings when making the purchasing decision, but many influencers are so quick to brush off these shortcomings which is irresponsible. I can understand the company only mentioning their strong features, but for influencers? It’s not acceptable, when the viewers rely on their opinions on making the purchases. This is 2024, not the 90’s when we make purchase decisions based on ads.

Excellent points. And that lens does seem a bit odd in anyone’s book. Personally I don’t connect a mic to my camera when I record, even though I can. I prefer to use a separate recorder so that particular shortcoming doesn’t matter to me. And ultimately that’s the thing - what I need is likely to be different to what others need. But I’ve learned what I need over many years. Newer people might easily be influenced by a popular RUclipsr.

Spot on. I think most influencers have sorta of this ego that it's all about them not the profuct. Most do reviews videos as it's cheap content something they can do without haveing to be creative. They do it with most camera gear. Yet all they do is film themselves there isn't a lot of reviewers who actually take the gear and use it in the real world. They just want to be RUclipsrs that make content but not creative content. They spend more time looking polished then actually using the gear they buy 😆

It is content creator camera for short video vlog. Does what it has to do but not what Panasonic and the RUclips photo pundits marketing to be. The biggest issue is that they started to suggest that S9 is some kind of miracle replacement of Fujifilm x100Vi , only because of one LUT button (everyone know that you can not simulate Fuji simulations as Fuji doing it straight out of camera) .If you know anything about camera you might get in to the marketing "trap" and as you sad camera can serve one but not another.

A good point. It’s not quite as good as some people seem to be making out. That doesn’t mean it’s no good, but making it out to be amazing is doing it a disservice. Focus on what it can do without pretending it beats everything else.
Personally I wouldn’t use the LUT button and I don’t use Fuji film simulations much either.
So it’s definitely not a miracle camera!

    • @videosuperhighway7655

All this “Fuji” simulation are just LUTs. I have plenty of custom LUTs on capture one for post capture processing, ie Techpan,Tri-x,Velvia,Portra etc.. tons I painstakingly create and test on calibrated monitors.
This tiny full frame camera with the ability to experiment with making my own LUTs in field with no computer, real time etc sounds like a lot or fun. I definitely plan on working my LUTs and porting them to this.

The negative feedback is not about a potentially 'meh' camera. It is about some YT 'reviewers' glossing over the severe limitations of a camera, it could be any camera, potentially misleading subscribers, particularly the young and novices, who trust their opinion on a £1,500+ purchase. I heard a story on another channel, from one of the people invited to the event, which, if true, would explain a lot. The S9 was not the camera that was supposed to be launched at the Japan event. The people invited (and their audiences) do not represent Panasonic's core target market for the S9. Presumably, something more photography, as opposed to novice videography, focused was going to be released. If true this would explain why the S9 was released prematurely with a joke lens rather than the non-joke lens which is due in a 'few months'. Btw the people who visited Japan got given the cameras on 'long term loan' which is a sleazy way for corporations to try and corrupt people, as all involved can say no-one was given any equipment for free.

All good points gently made. For me the camera is a misfire. Too many compromises. If it’s for video it’s too limited in terms of time it can run and lack of mic port. For photos no mechanical shutter, no hotshoe are a deal breaker. LUTs is a nice idea in theory but I’d apply them later noot bake them in.
I like its full frame. I wanted it to be an x100vi killer but its just not.
At the price it is I’m really not sure who its for? Seems more like a solution in search of a problem than a good solution to a real problem.
On the manual f8 lens topic…. Would have bought tickets to that product meeting.

    • @mygoodstuffreviewed
      @mygoodstuffreviewed  Месяц назад

Absolutely agreed about that LUT button - I have the option to apply LUTS using my Atomos Ninja and I’ve never used any. So not for me. And that F8 lens? That is definitely one for the history books, although it can’t be as bad as the 39-80mm Sigma that I had about 40 years ago. That thing was trash - I ended up giving it away!
You’ve mentioned mech shutter and no hot shoe as deal breakers. That’s one of the interesting things about this whole scenario. For some people those features mean nothing. They mean nothing to me - I don’t use them so I wouldn’t care that they’re not there. But for others they might be critical elements. Maybe they’ll fix the shortcomings in a MK ii version.
As for the price, well it seems that all cameras are rising substantially in price. It’s just that this one seems a bit overpriced more than some of the others.

This drama is funny because it's ridiculous! Nothing to see there, just peoples wasting their time. All the cons attributed to the S9 are not deals breakers for the targeted demographic which obviously is not professional filmmakers, neither professional wedding filmmaker, nor professional RUclipsr from the Photo/Video niche. The issue with Camera reviewer on RUclips is each new camera released should be their personal dreamed camera and if not, then it's not a good camera and people shouldn't bother looking at it or considering that camera. And this is wrong and needs to change.
I saw a RUclipsr who reviewed the S9 in context of Professional Wedding filmmaker, like if Max Verstappen was reviewing a Tesla Cyber Truck, Toyota Camry, or Ford F350 then say, "this car doesn't have this and this and that so I cannot race the Miami Grand Prix with it, therefore it's a bad car!". I'm pretty sure those RUclipsr will find that totally absurd.
As the same RUclipsrs like to say, Cameras are tools and none of them are perfect! But they're still looking for the perfect one with all their dreamed spec, because all cameras' users have the same needs as them, care about the same things in a camera as them or want the same user experience as them.
The Viewfinder thing is an interesting one. Many of those people missing viewfinder have a SLR, or DSLR background. So, their muscle memories are already conditioned to use a viewfinder. Wondering when they take photo with their smartphone if they're also looking for or missing the viewfinder? maybe who knows! They never complained about the lack of viewfinder on a smartphone, and just deal with it.

Before that was the sensor size war, where full frame should have been the norm as it was so better than anything else. Now some of them are using RED Komodo or Komodo-X which is a super35 aka crop sensor or Canon C70.

For example they made a hot shoe mic specifically for those who care about quality. influencers on the other is like “oh they don’t need this, they don’t need that”. And that’s the problem because their job to tell us what’s missing and how it affects their viewers work, not their job to decide for them.

I love Panasonic cameras, but the S9 has me mystified. Panasonic made too many design concessions in an attempt to make a full-frame camera what it can never be, a small camera given of the size of the lenses it needs.
The 26mm manual focus lens with a fixed aperture size of F8, which is needed to actually make the S9 appear to be a small form-factor camera, is a joke. If I put my Panasonic/Leica 15mm F1.7 on a M43 Gx9, I will have an auto focus camera with better low light performance and a shallower depth of field than the full frame S9. (Did I mention the GX9 has an EVF?)
Hard pass on the S9 and their cheap, plastic kit lens.
Panasonic, update the GX9 with a better EVF and screen, use the G9 M2 sensor with its improved IBIS and its new hybrid autofocus system, and then you will have a near-perfect small form-factor camera.

I’ve never tried an S5ii. It does seem to get a lot of love from many RUclipsrs. There’s something about how it looks that I don’t like though. Doesn’t mean it’s a bad performer, but some designs don’t do it for me. It’s like judging a book by its cover. I know that’s a silly way to look at a camera, but I suspect many of us do.

@glpro2696 Funny you should mention the Canon. I have been looking at used ones. I always wanted one back in the day, but couldn’t afford it then. So many of us forget how good a camera was at the time and still is! Just because newer and shinier comes along, it doesn’t make the older one bad all of a sudden. I still live my little Canon M100. It amazes me what the 22mm M lens can do on that tiny camera. I’m still tempted by the 5D, but I think my wife would kill me….unless I hid it well from her!

The drama isn't about the S9 it's about a Canadian tuber that didn't get invited so he threw a hissy fit. Had he not had his tantrum none of this would be in the fore front. I ordered the S9 as soon as I saw the release and before any of the reviews as I own the S1r and the S5iix and wanted something a little smaller that used all the same lenses that I have. I feel bad that camera reviewers think that they're so much more important than they really are. Viewers need to watch the reviews with a grain of salt as you commented everyone's use case is different. Can't wait to see who complains when Sony has another release and has the same type of invitational party.

Very interesting point and I must admit that it seemed odd (for that RUclipsr) to kick up a fuss. But I guess if your business revolves around being given stuff then it can be frustrating to miss out.
Absolutely agree about the grain of salt. I’ve seen reviews that were damning and I’ve ended up loving the camera. I’ve seen glowing reviews and ended up hating the camera. I’ve even seen reviews where they gush positively about a colour choice. “Buy this, it’s available in salmon pink”.
I’m sure Sony will be having a party within the next year and I’m sure I won’t be invited! I still like their gear though. Just got the ZV E10 and I love it.

You completely missed the mark with that one, chief.
If you get free stuff from a company you are more likely to review their products favorably because you want *more* free stuff from them later. It was even hinted at that this is exactly what camera companies are aiming at.
Also, the simple fact that he *didn't* get a camera from them? That alone is proof for this. Because it basically says "We want good reviews or you don't get anything."
Look at the whole drama between Nvidia and Hardware Unboxed. They flat out sent that channel an email pressuring them to review their GPUs a certain way or they won't get review cards anymore.
It's predatory and anti-consumer. We are talking about gigantic, billion dollar companies here. They don't need your emotional support! You like their cameras? Fine! But all the crap they pulled with the S9 is enough for me not to consider Panasonic if I ever decide to switch systems.

You probably saw the blowback about the Insta360 situation, where they asked various RUclipsrs to hide the fact they were being sponsored. I’m sure it’s not the first time and likely won’t be the last that a company seeks to control their press and public reputation.
It definitely makes it hard to know whom to listen to.

      @@mygoodstuffreviewed Exactly.
Though to be honest, I don't really care. All these giant companies are lying to get as much money from us as possible. So I always take every review with a boulder of salt and watch lots of them before buying anything.
It's also why I'm pretty happy with Nikon because they seem to be one of those companies with a sort of "hands off" approach. They send out cameras, they get reviewed and in most cases the reviews actually highlight negative aspects as well. From my experience reviews about Nikon products are just more balanced in that regard. When it's a preview they just make sure that no details are mentioned that aren't announced yet. Like the price. To me that also implies a lot of confidence in their products and that they are willing to listen to negative feedback.
But I still only trust them as far as I can throw my new 180-600! 🙃

    • @rickseigh460

@@MattisProbably WOW, you're completely wrong. Camera companies used to advertise on TV and spend millions and now that consumers are using their smart phones that's just a waste of money. This is the new advertising game and it makes sense. And it's not just Panasonic it's all of the companies doing this. Leica just had one and Canon and Sony will be right behind. If a reviewer wants to take a chance and ruin his/her reputation on bowing to the company that gave them the camera it won't be long before they start loosing their viewers. I've been buying and using cameras for 50 years now and have owned, Minolta, Panasonic, Canon, Sony, Fuji, Leica, aside from video cameras by Panasonic, Z-cam, RED, Canon and there is no perfect camera. I repeat what I've said before none of this would be going on if ONE guy wasn't crying about not being invited to the party. Buy and not buy what you want. I really don't care if companies are paying these reviewers for good reviews as I have enough sense to look at a camera and think.."This guy is wrong about this one" and move on.
