  • Ricoh recently released firmware updates for the GRiii and GRiiix.
    I've updated my GRiiix and thought it might be useful to show you how to do it, if you haven't updated your firmware before.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Let me know if you've updated your firmware yet - did it go smoothly for you?
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    The new features are not that useful to me personally, other than the new focus zones setting. The custom white balance settings may be more useful to you.

      Thanks! I love to jump on an update as soon as they come out. Quite a few camera firmwares have been updated recently so it’s been a busy time :)

    Does it improve focus

      I always found the focus to be pretty decent on my GR iii and I can't say I've noticed any big difference after installing the firmware. But to be fair I should really have done specific testing *before* installing the update and then the same testing *after* the update. For future firmware updates on any of my cameras I'll try to remember to test before and after.
      Also, I believe that in some cases where AF improvement is claimed it might be in edge cases that many of us will never experience anyway. Sorry I can't give you a more definitive answer.

      I pressed the menu button and kept it held down, then pressed the power on button. Is it possible that you're letting go of the menu button too early? I only let go when I saw the firmware update menu appear. Try that and let me know how you get on. I've been thinking about the zone focus addition and I kind of think it will be useful for me now, with some of the things I'll be doing in the future. It might be a beneficial upgrade for you too so it's worth persevering.

      @sash-xq3sl Which model Ricoh do you have?

      ok i figured it out, i had the wrong file (the one for iii, not iiix) in the root folder. since the naming doesn't make any sense, i downloaded both and put them both there to be sure, and then it worked

      @sash-xq3sl Good to hear you got it updated. Pity they can’t make it a single file that can work out which camera you have and install accordingly!
