- Somewhere in Canada, the toys are well and truly out of the pram. Among tears, the mask might have slightly shifted half way down the face of the camera reviewer. It also serves as a timely insight into the marketing squads undermining RUclips and camera reviews with their "fear and favour" led conquest of influencers.

I hate how these influencers only grow a conscience AFTER they've reaped all the rewards. It's laughable how he says they don't pay him for reviews. Dude the access IS your payment.
To be fair, he says "no money changed hands", which is open to interpretation.

Yes, with his EARLY ACCESS to the cameras in the past, he was able to Roll Out Reviews EARLIER than many other people. And that helps him getting more views than other people.
Really funny thing about those so called "Influencers" is... They seem to totally forgot their contents isnt like necessity in our life, I dont give a damn they release some 'review' or not. We can live without those video and we were :) I already got plenty of source helping my new gear acquisition journey even way way before those 'influencers' make these BS advertisement on youtube.

Thank Andrew for speaking the TRUTH even though some people say: "HONESTY does NOT PAY". This video reminds me of of the Insta360 x4 sponsorship scandal exposed in the last week of April, 2024. At the time, some reviewers revealed Insta360 advised them NOT to reveal they received the cameras for free to make it more convincing to the viewers. The saddest thing is there are MANY reviewers of Insta360 cameras on RUclips but ONLY 7 of them SPEAK UP against this UNLAWFUL PRACTICE (in North America at least).

I think Gerald has been covering most mayor camera brands and his experience with them. His recent experience with Lumix just invoked with him the strongest response, but brands like Fujifilm and Canon where not liked either. His sense was that Sony was the best in terms of no punishment, and no fear of punishment for a bad review.
I like hearing many reviewers judging and testing stuff their way, from different perspectives, including yours and Geralds and others. Surely I see the day one release videos as just a preliminary very limited view. By the time I get to buy something new the products usually are out for more then a year, so I do enjoy the long term and expert views, firmware updates, corrections etc. before buying. Cheers!
His living is based on You Tube and not been a profesional videographer or photographer. So his reviews are always from a technical perspective. He does include user experience which is what this Lumix S9 is. Besides that he is not the target audience of this camera when Lumix has seen which points he find valuable in cameras when he does his reviews.
The timing is interesting. The moment Panasonic releases a camera some people are coming out of the woods foaming in their mouth, making scathing statements like "oh, the S9 doesn't have mechanical shutter and EVF, it is a worthless junk!" and now Gerald throwing a tantrum at the same time makes me think this is an "organic" outrage against the brand. Just listen closely which brands he doesn't bash as much as Lumix and you get the picture. Having opinions is fine, but the landscape has become so radicalized it's impossible to have any civil discussion anymore.
The S9 was not the camera that was planned for this years Lumix Global Summit. Apparently some sort of videocentric GH7/SH1 mk II camera was planned, and as such a lot of filmmaker influencers was invited, then Panasonic had to do a u-turn at some point and delay the videocentric body. And with filmmakes comes the wrong target audience who want a filmmakers tool and not a stripped down toy.
Undone undid the Sigma Fp in a similar way as well. He is clearly closer to the Sony PR people compared to others
For all we know Panasonic might also have shown a 2nd camera at the Osaka event. I guess we will know soon enough if the june 5 date is also flooded with reviews of the 2nd camera from the usual suspects. Also timing looks perfect as they got 2 weeks to shot the S9 stuff, then another 2ish weeks for the 2nd camera.
Also, when Panasonic contacted Gerald Undone about "the new camera he would not like" - thus he was not invited to Japan - it might not be in reference to the S9, but a new MFT - a system that he dismissed in his GH6 review. It actually makes much more sense now...

Who are their target demographics?
Then look at what kind of camera this is? Who is is serving?
Look at the marketing Panasonic made on this camera? Does it match the people who got invited?
Look at the commercial that they made for this camera. I don't see any filmmakers.
Compare that to the people who got invited [to Japan] and their audiences.

For some reason a filmmaker body, i.e. GH7 or S1 mk II, was replaced with the S9 for the Lumix Global Summit.
There was a second camera, Japanese influencers are showing pictures they taken off the Panasonic people using it LOL they covered the camera of course, but its clearly the full frame S2

I've had many good things to say about Panasonic Lumix cameras (think back to when the GH5 came out; it had 10-bit 4:2:2 all-intra internal video recording, shutter angle, waveform, vectorscope, practically no record limit and no overheating issues, etc), but now I'm not so sure where I stand on things anymore. In Panasonic's quest to compete in today's market, they have taken on some of their competition's worst attributes and then some

Nope, Panasonic seems to had a "last minute" change of camera release. At some point a new video centric model was delayed and the S9 hastily replaced it. Even the kit zoom was not ready. And thus; total disaster.

Today influencers, yesteryear it was “professional” journalists in magazines.
The medium maybe have changed but not the process.
If you want early access you need a relationship with the business, photography or something else.
Early access is a factor to get on the hype train and attract clicks.
It also has to do with the fast product cycle, if you wait too long there is a replacement around the corner.
OTOH a good product does not get worse with age, but marketing is not about objectivity.
You are not going to change the business, only buyers will. You are not going to change influencers, that’s a triangle of viewers, manufacturers and sponsors. As long as a large part of the buyers are eager to get the latest and greatest this will only get worse.

Love this video. It's important to remember Gerald Undone is not only a camera and RUclips setup expert, he's also a moral expert too! Canada has it all! Do you honestly think camera companies are going to ask someone from the Bronx or Liverpool to make a review? Hell, no. They want those polite Canadians who sprinkle gold dust on a massive pile of poo (such as the Canon R5)!

Actually one You Tuber from US who went to the event said that the majority were not from the North America. Around the more of 100 attendees only 15 where from US and Canada.
@@angeloplayforone and they was air lifted in for a film makers camera release, and then it got delayed and 100 persons had to pretend to like the S9.

The problem with gerald undone is hes just a specs and lab guy. Hes not testing these camera how actual videographers/photographers will use them. He’ll show people oh this camera has an extra 1/4 stop of dynamic range in log compared to this other camera so its superior. I want to see how how gear performs by people who actually rely on them for work
You realize that some of the people on big sets do all of this kind of testing or hire a guy to do this testing before they start shooting on big productions ya?
Gerald's only started to take off on RUclips 5 years ago. Gerald also says he refuses to do reviews during the press release trips, he forces the brand to allow him to review the product in his own home so he has the time to be thorough. So I'm not sure where your criticism is coming from against Gerald.
Comes about the hypocrisy perceived because now he critized the way brands deal with reviewer. As he has received many products free, gone on trips free and enjoyed the free stuff. Now that he does not get it anymore he critized. Please hear this guy video again and listen to his main argument against Gerard. It is that he profited from the system but now he is kicked out then the system is flawed . This is hypocrisy.
Makes sense to me watch those reviewers videos they are all being filmed at the same time and trying to not be biased. I’d love to see the reviewer who waited until after the trip to make a video. I’ve been watching reviews since 2017. It’s apparent everyone is just a parrot of everyone else. However now I can just search for s9 and unsubscribe making it easier now.
I'm sick of them all to be honest. New rules need to be made to stop the free camera thing. Soon as they say this is my opinion, I start to grind my teeth.
Have you really watched his video. He is comparing the various companies in regards to how they behave if you stick to your values. Panasonic is punitive, Sony less so.

Kai Wong was really trying to straddle the fence and not rip the camera to shreds while in Osaka on Panasonic’s dime, but also not recommend it. Awkward as hell.
I can see how if you review equipment you would not want to get tangled up with the trips just to avoid making a total ass out of yourself.
Thank you, Andrew, for your consistent and honestly brutal truth about the camera industry. Camera Channels have become selling machines, and as a customer, you have to hear between the lines to see minor problems ⚠️ of a camera.
Especially filming for a whole day brings the most cameras on their limit 🚫 🎥🎬❌

Good reviews need real-world projects and some months of usage. Everything else is only guessing the specs on paper.

Nah you're a bit off imo. There is a world where someone can test a product and tell you what its good at and bad at, whilst being 'polite' about it. There's no need to rant and swear and smear a brand if a product falls short. In any sphere of work, being sensational and impolite is only good for short term success. Eventually the viewers get fed up and leave.
The camera industry turnaround is so huge that most big reviewers only have time to review a product, give their impressions, and move onto the next new camera. There will be some folks who do have time to do longer term reviews and thats their value. There is room for both type of reviewers.As adults we should be able to discern accordingly.
To question the talent of these Canadian folks is a low blow. Most of their reviews are top quality video productions with great photo samples, and balanced 'polite' opinion. What more do you need?

surely this goes to the heart of lumix ideas - skirting around legals and helping youtubers commit potential tax fraud by non report of what is an obvious gift / freebee.
Noone is talking about this issue and its pretty egregious and fitting for lumix marketing department - helping people to potentially commit tax crimes.

Well, Gerald would not enjoyed the S9. But so would not most of the you tubers attending the press junket in Japan. Rumour is that the S9 was not supposed to be the camera announced at the summit. And thus a ton of film makers had to pretend to like this stripped down toy when they had expected a GH/S1 replacement with PDAF.
@@GrenlandUnderVann that’s quite the rumor if it turns out to be accurate. My frustration with the hype and it not being the S1H II was quite palpable until I calmed down. I also question the S9 but I can think of a few use cases. The micro HDMI might allow unlimited external recording. Could attach it as an additional studio camera to an Atem or other switcher.
