As a few others in the chat have already mentioned, this is an insightful video which gives us a good idea of what traditional karate really is. Really appreciated the fact that he was very direct in his explanation.

I really like it when I hear them speak of not being concerned with winning but just not losing. I think that is key.

    • @kbanghart
      @kbanghart 5 лет назад +1

I agree, I think if you have the right mindset, because is truly for a self-defense and not attacking, then not losing really is a win. Only those who have a big ego, or desperate would see the need for attacking.

Wow - great video and beautifully produced. Chris Willson is a master. When I first met Nakasone Sensei, he was a beast and Kumite Champion. It is great to hear and see the evolution of his karate. I absolutely love his instruction beyond mere kata. His respect for Iha Sensei is moving. Totally inspired to go move and feel the energy flow.

    Dear Master Koichi Nakasone,
My deepest appreciation for the overview of Your way of Karate, especially with regards to
how one can find understanding of Karate going back to the roots.
Linking Kobudo is another good aspect especially when engaged in defence against attackers using poles, clubs or even knives.
Good health and Many, many thanks!
    Paul, retired instructor of Karate.

Toujours passionant.

As it moved away from the source , like most things , Okinawan karate got distorted and watered down. But at it's heart it's a compact , powerful , close range self defense system . There's a lot of standing grappling , trips, sweeps, throws and clinch work . I was lucky to meet a Goju practitioner in Washington state (US) that traveled often to Okinawa . He would perform Sanchin kata, or Tsuken no eku at local Karate tournaments and ironically always lose because the judges had no idea what the were looking at They were only used to the more popular acrobatic sports forms like you see in the Karate Kid movies . I certainly didn't master Sanchin , but between practicing it and building a proper makiwara board (not just a pad on the wall) I learned a LOT about structure and kinetic chain for short, explosive power .

Real mastery means dedication, focus, wisdom and humility to learn. These Sensei don’t speak shit, they speak humbly, truthfully and with true knowledge and wisdom.

A slight body shift can change everything. Power. Strength. Speed.
    EVERYTHING.
Which brings me to my GRIPE. All of my MASTERS/SIFUS didn’t teach me this technique until I MASTERED.
“It kinda pissed me off. Because if they had taught me that in the beginning, I would have mastered FASTER.
    Now, years later...
I understand. Master form then technique. Then, PERFECT.
    Awesomeness!

all those terms he was using are very rare: unless you can go okinawa and find a teacher of the old ways, you would never know that they exist in karate. same with the adaptation of the techniques that he demonstrated. imperative that this knowledge gets passed on. i liked how he balanced his ti studies with kumite. only wished i had seen some of their kumite training.

  • @tschr979

there was a time when these applications weren't taught to foreigners. and many died with the masters. the majority of karate students were only taught punch, kick, block in many variations but it's clear that there are plenty of jujitsu grabs, throws, and locks in the katas if we know where to look. unless shown the application, it's extremely difficult to visualize what is within a kata. now it starts to look much closer to its Chinese boxing roots.
