GOALS OF THE SERIES
1. Document the stories of Okinawan karate masters and their philosophy on life and their martial arts practice.
2. Record in the highest quality possible. Ideally 4K or 8K, RAW, multi camera, multi audio
3. Store the original data as an archival record.
4. Transcribe and translate the recordings to spread knowledge of Okinawan martial arts, history and culture.
5. Make the videos available for free online via RUclips and Bujin.tv so that anyone, anywhere can see them.
The documentary series grew out of the Karate Masters Portrait Project which began in 2012. The portrait project allowed amazing access to the sensei, but it was only Chris Willson and James Pankiewicz who got to hear their stories. The documentary series is a way for us to share that unique knowledge with the international karate community.
The international karate community generously supported the first series.

What an amazing master, such a loving and kind attitude, with such remarkable karate abilities.
Another gem. Thank you.
Absolute Respect for these Grandmasters and their arts..love this series..
Thank you
Respect for the sensei.. I can see that good karate really builds that good character in people 👍🏻
What an awesome spirit of Master Tamaki. He gives off such a positive vibe and such an great treasure to Okinawan Karate. Thanks Chris!
Another absolutely wonderful episode. Such history being preserved here. Thank you to Chris, his team and to all for the sponsors and supporters.
Awesome..
This is a series that deserves support!
Thanks for this series it's an amazing idea. It's not often you get the opportunity to absorb even a fraction of the experience of someone like this.
Another Great Master the techniques and ..The smile are fantastics thanks a lot to the great Master ande the production
Magnificent speech by a great master. Probably the best so far. Thanks for another great video
This sensei looks very kind and interesting, but also seems to be very skilled. Love it !
Great series - quality matters for real, from design, music and style to the very personal interview of the masters. Thank you!
True traditional karate is spirit and form and not flash.. thank you for such a wonderful video!
He trained under Nagamine Shoshin Sensei... of course despite devastating power in his waza; his kindness and grace shine through!
After 6 years working in corrections.. I don't smile so much anymore.. but that old man makes me smile.
People don't know what we go through in our line of work.
My kind of teacher
A wonderful episode. You can see how he lights talking about karate and sharing his wisdom. Great job guys! 🙏🥋
Thank you. Keep up the good work.
Good work.
Thanks for sharing a master's vision. Oss Sensei.
Wonderful!
Thank you
great work!
I'm very touched by this Sensei, this is probably the best episode so far. Where do I find his dojo please?
I f you look up Sensei Jerry Figgiani he can direct you there!
I wanna learn from him too.
Naha Okinawa. I have trained in his dojo.
@@spydarwebb5361 what your opinion about his dojo, he is good sensei?
@@yogi8337 I have trained with Tamaki 3 0r 4 times in the USA and Okinawa. His is a master and a wonderful person.
nice, sincere... no fantasy talk
WE will keep the tradition of KARATE.....the sport is good....but KARATE didnt originate for this reason. OUR traditional understanding must always remain, or the SPIRIT will be lost.....KARATE and SPIRIT are ONE ...this is what OUR great teachers have taught for centuries.........................BODY-MIND-SPIRIT....Peace on 🌎......thank you for the awsome video Amigo!
Best episode so far. Always be thinking about bunkai! It looks like Tamaki sensei was doing Potsai and Sakugawa No Kun, two forms that we practice in Chito Ryu. The series has been excellent, thank you!
This was nice
What is the best style of karate shotoken
Karate shorien ru?
I practice karate shotoken because not found another syle karate such as shorien ru
It is important to remember where you came from..these sensei emphasize that in their comments.
Okinawan Karate is understood only by strong mind body and Spirit...the glue that combine these three is Sweat.
Kata Yakusoku and Makiwara are essential to find bunkai...there in find the proper teacher you can call Sensei.
I received a certificate from SEIGEN TAMAKI in 1969 in Nago is this the same family , I was competing in Judo when he was the president of Okinawa Judo Assoc ?
Daayum, this dude is almost 80 years old, and he can throw a punch on that bag harder than I can.
Such a wonderful series. I am a little confused, though, about one point of this video. Online I read that Tamaki-sensei is the head of Kokusai Shogen-ryu, but here the title card says he is with Shorin Ryu Karate do International. I understand Shogen-ryu grew from Shorin Ryu, but I thought the website for Okinawa Shogen-ryu, under Maeda-sensei, specifically states that it is now separate from other branches of Shorin Ryu. Is Tamaki-sensei affiliated with Maeda-sensei and Okinawa Shogen-ryu Karate-do? Are they (Maeda-sensei and Tamaki-sensei) separately continuing the tradition of Shogen Ryu's founder Taba Sensei? Sorry if this is an odd or in any way inappropriate question. I am just very curious, and would like to study with both of the men and their students if the opportunity ever arises.
Maeda Sensei's organisation separated from Sensei Tomaki's current Shogen ryu organisation.
Closing song title?
👏🏾
great series, will there be a Japan Masters series?
It would be great to expand the portrait series and the video series to masters of Okinawan karate based overseas, or karate masters up on mainland Japan. Currently our time and budget restricts us to focus only on Okinawa as it where I live.
@@OkinawanSpirit you are doing a wonderful job. These masters records will be precious to future generations. The direct lineage from the origins is disappearing. this is golden - thank you for this opportunity
Not really seen anyone throw an elbow strike from the hip like he did@ 8+.
Love what he said from 4.00... That basically answers all the critics of Traditional Karate
0:11 the name of his weapon plise😂😀😃😄
Your work is great, thank you for posting it! Perhaps you should remove the image of the calloused knuckles as that really isn't what a makiwara is for and might be construed to be promoting bad practices. Or not!
Makiwara is traditional in Okinawa! This is okinawan karate...
👌👌👌
Los Japoneses se adueñaron del Okinawa-Te, y quieren borrar los indicios del Okinawa te, que tiene influencia China, por eso era llamado
To Di o To De, o la mano de china o DE Tang.
Any plans on covering Koei Nohara founder of Ryukyukan Shorin-Ryu?
Very good interview with Grand Master of Shorin Ryu , but Will the same thing be done with Hanshi Sei Fusei Kise? It will be of great interest to me and my school of karate ... my respectful greeting
I photographed Fusei Kise and his son recently as part of the Karate Masters Portrait Project. I have offered to interview him for the series, we just have to wait until they are ready to take part.
@@OkinawanSpirit I'm excited to hear this ... I'll follow you! they have a great history of Okinawan Karate in their hands and good Stories of Gran Master Hohan Soken ...
Throughout my school life I was bullied. They mocked me because of my dark skin. And they use to beat me up. No one helped me. I made friends with some of my classmates thinking that they will help me. But when the bullies came they left me and joined the bullies to beat me up with them.
Then I started learning kudo and karate. And I worked day and night to train myself. And then all my bullies avoided any conflict with me.
Now I'm a black belt in karate and I know how it feels to be weak. But the truth is we are not weak its just a state to mind. So I thought of teaching everyone martial arts and rise above bullies. And started a RUclips channel. Always remember YOU ARE NOT WEAK. YOU ARE MORE THAN WHAT YOU THINK YOURSELF TO BE. NEVER EVER GIVE UP.
Aynı bizim Türk amcalara benziyor be bu adam :)
Esto es Okinawa-Te, no es karate. el Karate es Japones, Okinawa te es de Okinawa.
