As someone whose Facebook feed is full of "prophecy alerts!" I appreciate a much more reasonable and responsible approach to John's apocalypse. I have a lot of difficulty presenting this information to religious types who have grown up on dispensational and "end-times" hysteria. I don't really try anymore. I think some people thrive on fear and the distractions of end-time prophecy.
    Thank you, Brother Bruce.

Yes. The question I generally get when presenting this info to people is more or less, “then what’s left for the church?” I always respond with something of this nature, why does the future of the church and the Gospel always have to be some cataclysmic event and a gloomy failure of the great commission? Why can’t we see the Gospel and the Kingdom of God as succeeding throughout history rather than defeated and raptured out of here? Could you imagine if the apostles had this view in the 1st century. The church would have been destroyed if such a pessimistic view was being held.

Why do people prefer end time hysteria? Gustave Le Bon said: “The masses have never thirsted after truth. They turn aside from evidence that is not to their taste, preferring to deify error, if error seduce them. Whoever can supply them with illusions is easily their master; whoever attempts to destroy their illusions is always their victim. then read 2 thess 2, it say it all.

@Bruce Gore. I want to thank you very very much for this series. I first watched them each week, waiting with excitement as each installment came out.
I'm writing 3 years later because I've just recently started to comment on YT.
My prayer to God back then was, 'Since you are not the author of confusion, may I have a proper understanding of the book of Revelation.'
God has certainly answered my prayers and since then, I have read the majority of the church father's and early church history. Also a deeper dive into the early manuscripts that are coming to surface even in our day. I study the original Greek words and it brings much more clarity. The internet has availed a plethora of information to those who are hungry for the truth.
    Wow! What a wonderful journey.
I really don't like to put labels or names on certain beliefs but people are known by that so, I would call myself an Ammillennial, partial preterist and have always been a Wesleyan Methodist.
    Thank you again brother.

@@riverjao My pastor is dispensational and teaches that way. Do you have any solid thought provoking pebbles I can toss at him, to spur him towards truth better? As a pastor yourself, I’m sure you are much more versed in the best contradictions to speak at one of these elders. Our yearly member meeting is in a few days, and there’s dispensational amendments to our bylaws and covenants, all of which I disagree with and will be pointing out that I don’t concede to dispensationalism. And that that might mean that I need to recant my membership, if they will require the conceding to the disspen. theology, which is how the revisions are written right now. So I’m going into the bulls den. As a woman. And as an objector. But not with the intent on arguing or fighting. But just to point out that if they are going to require dispensational eschatology for membership… then I cannot be a member.

I realize that at the time I'm watching this, the video is two years old so I don't expect that this will be seen. But hey worth a shot! I've been watching your church history videos and have found them very helpful so thank you.
I am a convinced Amillennial. after being taught the dispensational premilennial view of Revelation after a while I started seeing many holes in it as I read and studied my Bible on my own time. I have gone through a whole online video course on eschatology by Dr. Sam Waldron which was extremely helpful for me. I've kinda landed at a modified idealist approach to Revelation which is where I stand now. I definitely think that there are some really good points made by the partial preterist camp, once of which you mentioned in this video. That it says these things must soon take place.
I've kinda thought about and wondered if these two views could work together. For instance the Olivet Discourse talking about the destruction of Isreal but also eluding to a bigger picture. And if it's also a similar thing concerning Revelation.
So I guess that's my question. In your view does an idealist approach fit with your understanding of Revelation or are they mutually exclusive? Thank you for your time if you happen to see this. Also this is in no way trying to start some internet debate or something. I'm just trying to grow in my learning and understanding the different Amillennial views and how the agree and differentiate from each other. Thanks and God bless.

@Chris Johnson Hi. I hope I am not high jacking this question or queries. I love Bruce Gore's teachings and his humility. He shows the Spirit of God and has brought so much cohesion to eschatology for me and is my brother in Christ.
However, I am still an amillennial because of several reasons. I believe Revelation 20 : 6 has been happening for millenia and verse 7 is now occurring. Because the world is so wicked right now ,who can deny it?
I used to believe the historical view until I began reading the scriptures for myself. Mind blowing really, cause the word speaks for itself. As far as idealist is concerned it does not pinpoint and everything is open to idealization. It also goes with historical ideal because it covers every ideal. I know, I did once believe that, because there where no other options to look at other than dispensational until further investigation of the matter.
      I hope this helps.

    What I liked:
    - The angel of the Lord (refers to Jesus in the OT)
    - The signs in revelation (make perfect sense)
    - The sworn testimony of Jesus (wow - the claim of this prophesy)
What I missed: The "unveiling of Jesus Christ":
    - I think this should take more emphasis
    - a Bride's veil is removed when she is getting married (The unveiling of Jesus Christ can be read as "the Marriage of Jesus Christ that God gave Him")
    - For me the central theme of revelation is the love story of God that climax in the marriage of the Lamb

Jerusalem is identified as the great city "babylon" in Revelation 11:8 and so this alone proves that the writing of the Book of Revelation occurred before 70AD since the prophecies were forecasting the destruction of this city.
Preterism is the truth; all has been fulfilled. Jesus himself stated explicitly that ALL his prophecies would be fufilled in that generation he then spoke to! Matthew 16:28 "Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom." and Matthew 24:34 "Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled."

Hi Bruce, I recently came upon your lectures. I’m a former Jehovah’s Witness but have been Christian for two years. As you know, Matthew 24 is a big (central) doctrine for the JWs - “great tribulation” coming soon followed by Armageddon. It created many nightmares for me as a child, as well as many others. Many of us JWs were encouraged to pack “to go” bags so we could grab them at the start of the great tribulation.
A few RUclipsrs have made videos about a WT article that is to be discussed this Sunday entitled “Armageddon Is Good News.” It is far off from the Bible. The latest teaching is that the Governing Body and the rest of the anointed will, apparently, be raptured before the mess hits on earth and they will be assisting Jesus with the execution of wicked people. ☹️
I didn’t know anything about preterism and fulfillment of 70 AD until I heard lectures by Jeff Durbin. It made complete sense to me that Jesus spoke to that generation - not ours.
I can’t wrap my head around some things though:
    1. If God’s Kingdom is here now, is Satan still roaming about instigating the evil that is here?
    2. Where does preterism fit in with Jesus returning?
    3. “Death will be no more” - how does preterism view this?
    4. Satan hasn’t been thrown into the fiery pit for 1,000 years because there’s still problems on earth. I’m confused if he has been tossed in already.
    Thank you!

I am delighted to hear from you. I am giving quite short answers to your excellent questions, but want you to feel free to email me directly if you want to follow up on any of this. My email is bruce@brucegore.com.1. The sense in which Satan is bound is related to the gospel of Christ. Where Christ is faithfully preached, Satan runs for cover. Where the truth of Christ is neglected, dark arts, violence, superstition, and fear take over. That is historically demonstrable. 2. There are those who believe the second coming took place in 70 a.d. They are sometimes called full preterists. I reject this view, and affirm with the vast majority of Christians throughout history that Christ will come at the end of human history. My conviction that the Olivet Discourse and the bulk of the book of Revelation describe events that took place in the first century in no way militates against the traditional view of the church, that Christ is presently sitting at the right hand of God, 'from whence he will return to judge the quick and the dead.' 3. The statement that 'death will be no more' is to be taken in the same spirit as Paul's great affirmation, 'death where is your sting, grave where is your victory.' Death no longer represents a threat or a fearful prospect to those who belong to Christ. 4. Satan has not been thrown into the 'fiery pit,' but into the 'abyss.' In revelation, the abyss stands for the place where Satan controls. It is a way of saying he is limited to his own quarters until he is judged with finality. Christ came to 'destroy the works of the devil,' and that is what he has done. The power of Christ against Satan is lodged in the gospel, which drives back the power of Satan, because the very 'gates of Hell' are insufficient to withstand the power of the gospel of Christ. I sincerely hope that helps. Again, I welcome further questions, and hope you will feel free to use my email if you are interested. Blessings!

1I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; 2For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. 3For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; 4Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. 5For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; 6Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

It is God's purpose that all sorts of people, i.e., all without distinction (even kings!) should come to faith. If the verse meant all without exception, we would have to embrace universalism, which is, of course, quite inconsistent the rest of scripture.

I am writing this one year later.
I did not finish your original series, but I am determined to stay tuned to the end of this series. I presented my Bible class (and teacher) with the four approaches to Revelation that you mentioned in your first series. The reaction from a fellow student and the teacher was very dismissive. So I researched it and sent a couple of articles to the teacher. The point is that, although you stated here that the Bible should be the final commentary on the Bible, it’s hard to ignore the historical and cultural context (almost the exact title of your book.)
I’ve had problems in that class because I do research on whatever we’re learning, and like to bring related information to class with me. (Maybe I’m transgressing by bringing my own handouts.) I’m a retired teacher and I guess I always feel the need to explain things, which pushes me to thoroughly understand those things myself.
Anyway, I love your lectures because you take us back to the time and place when these events were happening, thus making it more real and impactful. And you always include lexical explanations, which helps to make the material even more accessible.

Perfect antidote for a country on the verge of... who knows what! And a great introduction to a book that has been depicted as enigmatic with disturbing messages.
I heard an older intro of yours on Revelation and feel as though I need to go back.
I know you spoke about the “preterist” view and need to review that.
I read the entire Letter to the Ephesians the other night after your lecture on Exodus 12, and suddenly saw the light. I had already listened to your lecture on John’s words to the believers in Ephesus, and finally the dots were connecting and I was seeing the big picture.
Thank you for helping put the scattered puzzle pieces of the Bible together for us, and especially for making them meaningful and applicable in our lives.

I really appreciate your labor and teaching. I've come out of a Dispensation background which is basically futuristic in all its teaching but I'm convinced now that God was announcing a new day, a new Jerusalem with a new Zion and a new temple, a new priesthood with a new High Priest ect. He was tearing down the shadows and bringing into service the reality of what the shadows were but a type of. You could say God was making "all things new" and better. To view all this as futurist is to miss the reality of what God has already done now. It reminds me of the Jews who are still waiting for Messiah to Come. Plus John would have mentioned destruction of Temple if written in 95 A.D, nevermind the measuring of the Temple which could not happen if gone in a late date. If the blessing is for those who read and keep (consume the words and obey the words, then how does this blessing cover the prophecy proper, chapters four through halfway through 22, for there are no instructions in this section, which constitutes the majority of the book?
Also, many people today cannot read. I believe I can safely say many people in John's day also could not read. It sounds as if John (God through John) is simply covering the bases by saying not only those who read but also those who are restricted to hearing are blessed too. Why? Because of the importance and purpose of this particular verses message. (Hint: There is more to this blessing than simply being blessed by reading and or hearing. It has to do with the keeping, which has equal status to hearing.)

Though I think you make some valid points in support of this method you seem to focus on those passages that affirm your position while ignoring those that don't. For for instance, you highlight verse 1 and verse 3 of chapter 1 but seem to overlook verse 11 of chapter 3 and 22:7. It's clear that Jesus has not yet returned so when he says "I'm coming soon" we cannot assume God's view of time is the same as ours. Soon obviously means an entirely different length of time to God than it does to us.

I don't know Protestant 'thinking' much (Catholic whose Papa is Jesus because Rome... woah) except that it usually scares when people who make this incredible "summation"/"revelation of God throughout time into "a zombie apocalypse" as some sort of SALVIFIC line in the sand ("believe it this way or burn in Hell forever"). They sap the beauty right out of it.
Amos 3.7: For the Lord God doth nothing without revealing his secrets to his servants, the prophets
St. John wrote this and spread it out (imho) before Jerusalem got sacked and Rome burned. Who could have GUESSED at such a thing? It was HUGE! Poor St. John probably got scoffed at so hard he had to run from scoffers and then not only did Jerusalem fall, but Rome had the fire (which 6th king Nero blamed on the Christians) and VESUVIUS BLEW. I hope you have something about those tidbits of history in this series. No, I don't know (or won't say for certain) that Jesus came back and was seen by everyone - I believe many OT prophecies (and what Jesus said!) about the day of the Lord with the darkness and the dead rising HAPPENED from the Passion of Christ (earthquake, dead coming out of graves, *darkness over the land* ) through to Pentecost of the same year!
_I wouldn't stake my soul on any of my thoughts,_ of course. Anyway, this is a neat series. Did you do those artworks? I'm learning to paint (watercolours, not oil) and I get to the horse rider and find myself unable to depict Jesus so I leave a huge "white light" (paper with no paint). I mostly focus my art on God's creation (birds and animals) and even then I'm worried people might worship some paint on paper because people can be stupid! But the paintings are interesting. Do you have them in a collection, and if so, can you link us up? I.X.

Great teaching Bruce. It's clear to me, that everything in the book of Revelation has been fulfilled at the destruction of Jerusalem. (The fall of Babylon the great city) the kingdom was taken from apostate Israel and given to those who come to faith in Christ. For myself the book clearly tells us that everything spoken of in it MUST SHORTLY come to pass. This includes the marriage feast, the Heavenly Jerusalem which replaced the earthly Jerusalem, and whose gates remain open for all who will come and drink from the river of life which flows from the throne of the Lamb.(Salvation has come) Christ having ushered in the New Heavens and Earth aka The New Covenant World replacing the old covenant world which was at their time ready to vanish away, and the Parousia of the Lord at the 7th trumpet. The book of Revelation fully agrees with Jesus own words in Luke 21:20-22 and in so many other passages. "When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies....etc. For these are the days of vengeance in which "ALL THINGS WRITTEN MUST BE FULFILLED." There is nothing in Revelation that we can justify as to not having been fulfilled ,(as much as some may not like it) ,when it clearly tells us that the time was near, and about to shortly take place including Rev 22:20 He who testifies to these things says," SURELY I AM COMING QUICKLY." I believe HE kept HIS WORD. :) Appreciate your teaching Bruce!

Another good one is in Revelation where it explicitly identifies Jerusalem as the Beast government and great city of "babylon" to be identified as Jerusalem itself! Rev. 11:8 "And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified." For thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Let not your prophets and your diviners, that be in the midst of you, deceive you, neither hearken to your dreams which ye cause to be dreamed.-Jeremiah 29:8
The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a dream; and he that hath my word, let him speak my word faithfully. What is the chaff to the wheat? saith the Lord. Is not my word like as a fire? saith the Lord; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces? Therefore, behold, I am against the prophets, saith the Lord, that steal my words every one from his neighbour. Behold, I am against the prophets, saith the Lord, that use their tongues, and say, He saith. Behold, I am against them that prophesy false dreams, saith the Lord, and do tell them, and cause my people to err by their lies, and by their lightness; yet I sent them not, nor commanded them: therefore they shall not profit this people at all, saith the Lord. And when this people, or the prophet, or a priest, shall ask thee, saying, What is the burden of the Lord? thou shalt then say unto them, What burden? I will even forsake you, saith the Lord.-Jeremiah 23:28-33

My suggestion to you is to show your mom the first chapter of the book of Revelation. Show her that this was a book written in the first century to seven specific churches in Asia minor and the events written in it were soon to take place in their day. The prophecy club is a deceptive organization leading many astray.

I guess I'm a little confused. When it says there will be no more death or sorrow or crying, is this talking about the seige of Jerusalem, or the entirety of time after 70 ad? What about the persecution of Diocletian, Domitian, etc...? Which video addresses this question. I appreciate the history, I really do, but if all the language is "sign" language, then shouldn't "quickly" be "sign" language also? We aren't apt to picking and choosing I hope. Forgive me if these questions seem rudimentary, but there are things spoken of especially in chapters 21 and 22 that have just not happened. And if they have happened by "signification" as through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, then I'm confused why a prophecy would need to speak of it happening in the future (even quickly) if Pentecost happened some 30-40 years prior.

As per your second principle of hermeneutics, I also ask two questions: 1) Why is that in the Bible? ; 2) If I let Scripture interpret Scripture, am I getting into a circular argument or a paradox deriving from self-referentiality? This often refuted agenda based interpretations. Granted that this is Deductive Reasoning which contrasts to the Inductive Reasoning of Hermeneutics, but it is often important to stress “what is NOT meant” as per your discourse about the Greek that implies that “ these things will take place soon”.

Bruce Gore According to the Great Mathematician and Theologian Kurt Godel, finite closed systems have built-in Paradoxes. Ahh Bruce you could have skipped lesson #1 as in God has planned certain things... So when my relationship with my 1st wife met its termination and I had my day in court and I was very happy to both be in court and to hear the judge grant me custody I did not vent my anger, frustration at her but directly at God. I read through Job in hopes of some healing. Do you know what the message of Job is at least God's response to Job? Basically God says 'Suck it up, baby. I am God and I can do whatever I desire.' Loosely translated. I kept trying to kick God out of my life from 5/87 to 6/96. Let me tell you and everyone on the channel GOD IS FAITHFUL AND IF YOU ARE TRULY ONE OF HIS YOUR IN GOOD HANDS even if you don't like it.He did get my attention and that shepherd's crook latched on to my neck and He brought back to Him. It took Him placing a .45 against my ear and telling me 'If you really want Me to let this guy pull the trigger, I will.' I said I have a son to raise, so here I am giving glory to God for that which took place. 1) God is faithful, 2) eventually in His time we benefit from the hurtful time, 3) if we are very fortunate we can reach a point in our life and look at those times and Praise God for them. So Bruce, I do praise God for her. I do not need to write her name. Who knows someone here might know her. I do not wish to cause her any hurt by divulging her name. As always since '73 to now your teaching reaches the heart and causes one to thank God for His blessings. THX

One of the points for post-millennialism is made from Revelation 7:9 regarding the amount of people that cannot be numbered. But isn't that part of the book of Revelation supposed to have happened in the first century specifically regarding the fall of Jerusalem? Right after that it speaks of the martyrs. So how do you pull that verse out and apply it to the view at the end of the age and not say that that's the case in the first century? Daniel 12 and revelation 10! Are they talking about the same book. One it’s closed and now it’s open in revelation?
Also God knows the end from the beginning. In Luke pray you find yourself worthy to escape all these things. IS 68 our righteousness is filthy rags. This isn’t worthy. Revelation no one was worthy to open the book but the lamb (Jesus). That tells me no one was worthy to escape, therefore God sent his son who is worthy. Now we are going through persecution finding ourselves unworthy to escape these things. Is this correct? Scripture interpreting scripture!

    • @GoreBruce
      @GoreBruce  2 года назад

The word 'worthy' must be understood in its specific context, which varies. The sealed book of Daniel points to the time of Messiah, which was 500 hundred years in his future (roughly). The book of Revelation reveals Messiah, and in that sense, one could say that the sealed book of Daniel was opened in Revelation.

The Greek says "...to be coming in swiftness..." The word phrase "in swiftness" does not mean soon but means occurring in a short period of time. For example, next year, on June 22, the shortest night of the year will pass in swiftness.
Whatever was to happen was to happen both soon (time is at hand) and in swiftness (suddenly). God does not write poorly constructed prose, and repeating oneself, "soon" and "at hand" is poorly constructed prose in any language.

    • @GoreBruce
      @GoreBruce  Год назад

The prepositional phrase (en taxei) occurs seven times in the New Testament. It invariably means, 'in the immediate future,' which is also its meaning in the language of the culture of the day.
Acts 12:7 (...arise quickly, i.e., now)
Acts 22:18 (...get out of Jerusalem quickly, now)
Acts 25:4 (...he was going to Jerusalem soon, in the near future)
Romans 16:20 (...he will crush the serpent's head soon, in the near future)
Luke 18:8 (...he will avenge them soon, near future)
1 Tim 3:14 (I will come to you soon, near future)
Rev. 1:1 (...things that must take place soon, near future)

I’ve watched several of your videos, including the history surrounding the Jew’s exodus, the history connected to Daniel 11:1-36, and the history leading up to and through the Herods. I found these insightful and detailed. Your knowledge of history appears thorough. I suspect the information is highly accurate.
Nonetheless, you are in error concerning the word combination, “in swiftness”.
      Consider the following sentences:
The wrought writer sprang from his chair and gave his editor a swift kick (adverb).
The wrought writer thought a long moment before swiftly kicking his editor (adjective).
The wrought writer waited until the beautiful blond distracted everyone then kicked his editor in swiftness (noun).
All uses of the root word above, swift, means quick action and not action to happen soon. It matters not if the word is used as an adverb, adjective, or noun, the change is grammar does not change the meaning of the word.
In all your examples, the word was used to mean quick and not soon. It is clear in the Greek Paul told Timothy he expected to beat the letter to him, basically saying, I expect to arrive more-quickly, but I send the letter in case I’m delayed. Felex was saying he was in a rush to leave. Although this implies Felex would leave soon, which people in a rush typically do, the words he spoke, as recorded in Acts, relate to quickness.
Do not depend upon the translators. Their error rate translating the words is shockingly high for several reasons. In this case, they interpreted instead of translated.
