- Super Mario Galaxy has lots of out of bounds mysteries, but some are a bit closer to home than others - like in Deep Dark Galaxy. In a few levels, lots of strange things are just out of grasp due to barriers being put into place... And today we'll be covering just that. Within Deep Dark Galaxy, one of the stars blocks you from visiting the beach that you normally start on. But if we go there, we find quite a lot of odd things... Including the deadly cousin of Dusty Dune Galaxy's lost launch star!

I think the area Mario ends up spinning around in, there’s a planet that’s there that you end up on at the end of the second mission. However it’s not present on any other mission so your stuck.
Same, I was thinking maybe the launch star could be relates in some way to the planets from the 2nd mission.
Antonio Aguirre The behaviour is way too odd. It’s probably a leftover from a deleted planet. The checkpoint might have been where you landed on the planet, but now it’s a mess.
I mean that glass planet is the closest thing there is to that launch star. Launch stars might have been used to transport Mario to other planets instead of those bubble guns.

Mario....Was never able to go back to the Mushroom Kingdom....Becoming a life form between Organic and mineral,he wandered for eternity into the endless void known as space,being unable to die even though he wished for it,Mario eventually stopped thinking.
Seeing Mario fly through the skybox into space and seeing that wretched launch star in the distance is scarier than most horror movies.
His vital body begins to freeze from the near-absolute
zero temperature and he becomes trapped in the void
of space for eternity as half-mineral, half-animal. Unable to die even though he wishes for it, mario eventually stops thinking.

I know, right? They made an entire model (with graphics on the other side, too) for something you only ever normally see the front of. I think it was worth it, though, since it'd probably been more obvious if it was just an image like you said it could've been.

Deep Dark Galaxy is my favorite one. From the atmosphere to the eerie music and even the Toads that camp there
I think the reason the moon is absent during the other stars is because when the battle with Kamella starts, she appears right in front of the bright moon and flies down to the ship. I guess the developers just didn't find it necessary to include it anywhere else. That or I could be totally wrong, but I think that's why.

Deep Dark Galaxy is one of my most favorite places! I remember exploring it for hours on end...I've always loved how eerie and mysterious that place is! I also enjoyed collecting the purple coins in Deep Dark! It took over a hour but was really fun!
It's interesting to learn that the moon in this level disappears later on, something I never noticed! But even more interesting is that launch star!! Just as I thought Deep Dark had nothing else sinister about it to discover....there it is, a evil launch star lurking just above the planet's atmosphere, plotting and waiting (or hoping) for Mario to somehow fall into its grasp....despite being stuck way out in space. I get the impression it was some evil luma that was thrown out or something.
I think the Launch Star is actually a leftover. That's probably obvious, but considering what the Toads are doing in the inaccessible part of the level during the Purple Coin star, it's possible the player was originally meant to start there like normal. The path of the Launch Star shows a high launch with a sharp curve before dropping, meaning it was likely a way to get from the start of the level directly to the ship area. The checkpoint associated with the Launch Star also makes sense, as the ship area would become the new starting location should Mario lose a life. This is why there's no invisible ceiling in the area, as the player was initially meant to fly in through that open hole.
They likely just moved the Launch Star way out of the way and made the player just start at the ship area.
I think it was meant for the 2nd mission of the galaxy since you can actually see the launch star when you're on that glass planet. I think before they added the Fludd guns as a way to traverse through the level Mario was supposed to use launch starts to get from planet to planet. Especially with the angle of the isolated launch star maybe that's how Mario was supposed to get to the final glass planet

They might have intended for these "secret stars" to be a kind of warp cannon or warp room that took you to a different level entirely, maybe you didn't have enough star bits to unlock a level ahead so you went back to farm, found a weird area you missed before, find a launch star, and next thing you know, "hey! I'm in that level I couldn't get to!" or maybe something along those lines.
For me it might have been used for the 2nd star where you have to go to that glass planet. You can see the launch star on the final glass planet too. But then, Nintendo changed their minds and decided to use the FLUDD guns instead and forgot to remove the final launch star.
Mario: NOOOOO!! I know, I will use fludd to free from this gravity field!
*Summons Fludd from hammerspace. At first it seems to work, but the water quickly turns to ice, along with Mario's body slowly being covered in ice.*

It's possible that the star originally brought you to the moon, but the level was altered and the moon moved to a different place entirely. However the gravity for the moon is still where it used to be which is why you become stuck.
So you're telling me the moon was originally going to be more than a cinematic for Kamella, interesting.

The launch star made me realized and remembered that one scene in the first trailer for Super Mario Galaxy 2 and that it shows Mario flying through space with some space rocks around him with no beginning on where it took place and with no ending on Mario landing on a different planet.
In a smg2 i found chain chomps floating in the air, might say what galaxy it was later.

Fun fact, there’s a launch star just like this one in Super Mario Galaxy 2 on the Sky Station Galaxy’s Second Star. It’s right behind where you spawn at. Once you land, turn around and fly back you came from and you’ll eventually find it. It does the same this as this own, making you respawn to death until game over.

bruh super mario galaxy games just have an eerie quality to them. like something just always feels wrong. ive only played super mario galaxy 2 but in shiverburn galaxy, where there are those weird silhouettes watching you in the far background, just gives me chills. and there's other things too, but it's been a few years since ive even played so i cant remember
