The Block That Developers Left Behind in Super Mario Galaxy

  • Freezeflame Galaxy is a vast level in Super Mario Galaxy. It's honestly pretty darn huge as is every planet associated with it. But deep inside on of its planets, cast out into space, is a block that was left behind by developers. When the scenario changes, objects unload but this particular block does not. So, can we reach this lost block? Can we open it? Let's take a closer look!

For anyone curious about jumping off the block and spinning underneath it: The problem with spin jumps are that unless the actual spin jump momentum touches the center of the block, you'll just slide underneath it and not actually break it. Getting near the block after jumping off causes Mario to either try to grab the edge or jump off it again. Touching the block while spinning also pushes Mario away from the block. I tried a lot of times and wasn't able to break it. If someone can do this though, I'd be really curious to see it!

There's been something on my mind ever since I bought Super Mario Galaxy 2 in 2010. Look at the background of the Spin Dig Galaxy. It seems familiar. It looks as if its the remnant of the background of the last level in Super Mario Galaxy 1. It seems as if the background was that whole lava background but cooled over time.

I think it's less a mistake, and more of a "okay, we got the polygon count down to where we need it for a smooth frame rate, on to the next level." Why spend time removing more geometry than needed? Especially when it could end up breaking something else. Game development and optimization is a complicated business.

Actually, Shiverburn Galaxy is really more of a reincarnation of Freezeflame Galaxy. Remember that at the end of SMG1, Bowser's Galaxy Reactor imploded and Baby Luma threw himself into the resulting vortex to stop it from destroying everything, causing the vortex to instead suck in the entire universe and then spit it out, rebuilding all the galaxies but completely rearranging them, which is why a good portion of the galaxies in SMG2 have planets that resemble planets seen in SMG1.

I found the episode interesting, but there's something else that has had my attention for a while now.
You see, I'm actually a huge fan of Princess Peach, and I've always imagined Mario as specifically being designed to have flexible characters and lore. For example, Peach can be as smart or strong, or as dumb or weak, as you want her to be, according to the franchise itself.
This, in combination with a RUclips comment I once saw on there regarding a Smash Peach video, gave me the inspiration to imagine her as a super-powerful being (Super Mario pun intended), only unable to fight back against Bowser either because its too risky, or she's stripped of her magical powers and strength, and able to transform or save the world or more than hold her own with her wit, strength, and magic.
This combined with other thoughts like other Mario players that other characters such as Waluigi and Wario or Mona and Vanessa (of WarioWare) should have their part in the Super Mario series or others, among other things, means that I'm actually interested in your opinion on the matter.
Personally, I really think that Mario has had a lot of opportunity left on the table.
For one thing, I'm pretty sure I know for a fact that children can't really beat games at least not all that easily, at least not the main game, much less 100%, and another comment on YT stated that the games were built for children. Well, I disagree with that statement; I believe for a game to be built for children, it should be BEATABLE by children, at least the main game, and especially even failing that, it would have to be easy to learn how to beat the game for them. And I've known many cousins and friends of mine that may or may not have STILL beaten games like Super Mario World and Sonic The Hedgehog (and I'm speaking from experience), thus throwing the whole "Nintendo games were made for children" theory out the window. I mean, heck, I've played Super Mario Advance 2: Super Mario World since 2001, and didn't beat it until 2011 - that's how long it took for a child like me back then!
This makes Nintendo's argument about making levels simplified for children with little dramatic elements invalid IMHO. I'll be honest: I probably would've preferred a much more challenging version of New Super Mario Brothers than the version we got, even as a child and EVEN if I made much less progress on it myself; I would've found it more unique and more fun than the original NSMB could ever be to me, and even in any other circumstance, it would've made (at least for me) the worst or most uncomfortable Mario Saves Princess Peach plot(s) at least mildly acceptable (Odyssey, I'm looking at you.). With the current formula, I wouldn't really feel anything, leaving me to focus on the cringy plot of the game itself rather than the game and its mechanics themselves, which would always indicate a problem with the game, since I'm not enjoying it.
Other factors of this are that I really do think that Nintendo would design their games to be fun and enjoyable, and I personally feel like if they really meant it, they would've provided these new mechanics. Among other things that they could've incorporated along with them are new characters and kinds of plots, as well as new games starring other mechanics. If you seen channels like We Are Daisy and We Are Pauline (and I guess We Are Peach) before, you might know exactly what I'm talking about.
To top it all off, again, this means I don't really care how certain characters would be described, such as Wario and Peach, and that means I don't care if Nintendo "canonically" considers Wario and Waluigi villains; if I just wanted them to be anti-heroes who can't really decide if they want to be a hero or villain, and are interchangeably both, I have all the rights to consider them that. I'm just saying. That's what I've heard from Nintendo, anyway.
This means that I've decided to start up something called Nimio (which IS an original name, btw, in no way afflicted with Nintendo or Namco), which attempts to fill in these blank spots by giving certain characters as Waluigi and Queen Merelda more prominent roles, including star roles, and providing Peach with her own series that showcases her incredible power, wit, and magic from my own brain, among other things. Nintendo often says that they will eventually consider more prominent roles for characters as Princess Peach and Wario, for their fans. But I've figured why not just deliver them now if not for many more years, assuming it ever happens at all.
Again, as in the beginning of the comment, I'm interested in your thoughts on the matter. Thanks in advance.

In the first Ratchet & Clank game, on the planet Metropolis, there is a floating swingshot target underneath the path the train takes. If you jump off, there is a gravitation pull coming from the train so you have to time your jump to get out of its gravitational pull and still enough time to get to the target. If you don't make it you die and have to start the train cutscene and the ride up again. I managed to get to it after something like 30/40 tries as I was convinced the last golden bolt was under there and I would teleport to it by grabbing the target.
Nope. I found out the hard way that it was left there by the developers. Not sure if they left it there by mistake, or just couldn't be bothered to remove it. You can interact with it and use it, but you're stuck there until you release the button and die.

What about the anonymous and unseen voice of wisdom from Super Mario RPG? There is a person you can talk to behind the corner of the house in front of the castle in the Mushroom Kingdom, very near the location where Toadstool meets you outside to join your party for the rest of the game. You can't see them, they don't give you a name and they seem to offer advice until you reach Star Hill. After that they just repeat the same dialogue over and over again.

Just want to say, I discovered another out of bounds launch star in Dusty Dune Galaxy! It’s in the 1st mission of the galaxy, where the launch star is located near a planet that has blue star chips (but the blue star chips only appear in mission 2). The planet is skinny and the sand moves really fast too, I hope you see this comment.
