The way that this game conveys its emotions in such a powerful way still amazes me to this day. Every time I read the storybook and even the ending I get teary eyed. This game is what I point to when people say video games cant be art.
Thank you for making this video. I know this'll probably come off as weird because this really isn't that deep, but I love these 'iceberg' videos so much, and the Super Mario Galaxy games are two of my favorite games of all time and they had a huge impact on my childhood. For some reason, I've never even thought of the idea of an SMG iceberg popping up online but when I saw this video in my recommended I just got so happy. I'm gonna have a blast watching this! Thank you so much! This really made my day!!
There are some things about the galaxy games that I find interesting that weren't on the iceberg (or others I've seen). 1. In SMG1 there are 9 galaxies plus Rosalina's observatory that share the same sky box (the mushroom kingdom's planet). These are Bowser Jr's Airship Armada, Hurry Scurry Galaxy, Good Egg Galaxy, Dreadnought Galaxy, Gateway to the Starry Sky, Deep Dark (which has 2 versions, the red sky and normal ones) Bubble Blast Galaxy, Sand Spiral Galaxy, and Bowser Jr's Robot Reactor. This suggests that they all take place above the same planet, and near each other. 2. Captain Toad isn't quite the same in Galaxy 2. In the 121st star level of Galaxy 1 Captain Toad is revealed to have been promoted to Captain of the Royal Guard. In Galaxy 2 when you meet him he says he found the gear in a box and that he's the new Captain of the Toad Brigade. This seems to suggest that they aren't the same character, although it could just be the universe reset thing. In fact, the Lumas in Galaxy 2 build the brigade a starshroom and the Toads don't seem to recognize it, so it's probably the reset thing 3. What took the Observatory 's stars? When you first arrive at the Observatory Rosalina mentions that a strange forced grabbed her ship and ripped away the power stars. She then mentions that Bowser found the stars, implying that Bowser isn't the one who took them in the first place. So, what did it? 4. In the Luigi playthrough of Galaxy 1 the letters are still addressed to Mario. So, where is he? Did he get bit by his brother and turn into a Were-Luigi? In fact, why are there so many Luigi's in Mario lore? In 3D World that are hundreds of living Pixel Luigi's? Is he planning to take over the world?! 5. If you look closely, the area in front of Peach's castle is the exact layout from Super Mario 64. The opening even seems to suggest that the stars from 64 come from the Comet Observatory. 6. Are there moon Lumas? Bean Lumas? There are many stars in the series, so are there Lumas for each type? 7. What is the true power of the power stars? In 64 the wiggler says the star makes him feel strange, and when he gives it up he feels better. In the Galaxy games they can be used for space travel as well as used for creating entire Galaxies (as Bowser attempts to do). I mostly thought of this because of the wiggler thing though, so I guess it fits more with the 64 vid And now some points about things that were actually on the iceberg. 1. For the Luna's Suicide one, in Galaxy 2 it is shown that Lumas are still alive and can talk after having transformed. That's is all
Actually, one more thing. In New Super Mario Bros Wii, during the credits you can hear Peach reading the letter she sends Mario at the start of Galaxy before she gets cut off by Bowser's roar. The way she's reading it sounds like she's writing it, which would suggest that it takes place before Galaxy 1.
actually deep dark has 4 different skyboxes. default red creepy one neon greenish creepy one sky blue you can find it by using the cannons in the scariest galaxy in the game
Fun Fact, you can actually find the Pikmin-esque ship in 3 locations in-game: there's *two* of it in Space Junk in 2 different locations and one of it in Ghostly Galaxy (also the Starman's Fort one). Both Space Junk duplicates are used, but the Ghostly one has no purpose in the final game.
The ghostly one is the real wreck of the Dolphin, flung into deep space to freeze and break apart in the cold depths of deep space. Long live Hocatate freight.
Rosalina's Telescope wasn't actually luigi's, remember, it was in a fake mansion, with fake decor in fake rooms. That, and Luigi (canonically) gets the rank E house (seen in LM2)
The storybook always without fail makes me cry. I keep telling myself, I'm not gonna cry, I'm not gonna cry, I'm not gonna cry, but then when it gets to the "She's sleeping under the tree" part. I just cry my eyes out
This couldn't have come at a better time. I had just recently replayed SMG1 and SMG2. Both of which are my favorite games of all time. My dearest childhood favorites. The part about the loneliness. I just love it so much. I am an ambiverted person. Which means I both enjoy being alone and being with others. Whenever I play Mario Galaxy. I just love watching into the distance. Wondering what is out there. Meanwhile the immersive music drags me deeper into the game. Space Junk Galaxy is a prime example of those feelings. This game just fills with me so much hapiness and joy. Yet sadness as well. It's a mixture of the two and it feels great.
I really do like the lonely atmosphere galaxy one has, it can be epic but it can more often than not, show how small you are in compassion to the universe. The music helps a lot too, i love every bit of this game!
i love how wholesome this iceberg is as opposed to so many other icebergs. amazing work and an awesome video as the fruits of your efforts! i lost it at the screams of 128 italians part and the "SHES A DEMON" got me some too
About "SMG1's lonely atmosphere". I think you could have mentioned a certain glitch there. In Good Egg Galaxy, the star where there's a launch star above the house's orange pipe. If you manage to enter the pipe and activate the launch star at the same time (a bit tricky but doable), the music will be completely gone. And then you really feel lonely, lost in the immensity of space. I don't know if that's what the creator of the iceberg had in mind, but the name of the entry immediately reminded me of this glitch
22:32 I think I know what the weird bottle-planet might be. Its not actually a bottle, but rather a small planet with a layer of water on its surface. The cork-looking thing is most likely a stump that you could ground-pound to make something happen like the ones in the games currently, such as in the apple-caterpillar part of Gusty Garden Galaxy.
37:26 imagine developing a game for several years only for people to point out some mega obscure accidental ctrl + v that you did, in some random, nameless area
This is one of my favorite iceberg videos. It shows Sunflower did their research, going in depth instead of skimming over the surface of each entry, and it's entertaining without being irritating or making me want to stop watching. Bravo
I loved playing super mario galaxy 1 on the wii, I have the second game but I never beat it. I do remember watching glitch videos then pulling them off in-game and it was super fun
I wonder if Mario Galaxy is the reason i was never too worried about being so small in this big universe. With it's lonely atmosphere, i feel like it made me prepared for this feeling without even consciously thinking about it, and even if you feel alone, you can still think of all the fun and colorful adventures you have :)
There's only a few channels that I do this with but it's really enjoyable to come back every so often and watch through a bunch of iceberg videos. Sunflower's are some of my favorites to do that with. Thanks for all the hard work and for giving us these videos to relax with anytime we need them! 👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻👍🏻✌🏻✌🏻
The section about the theme of loneliness is why I believe that SMG1 is superior to SMG2. More levels in SMG2 use cloudy backgrounds, but I greatly prefer the more spacey look of SMG1. It gives the game a much more lonely feeling, while also being wondrous. Both the subtle and direct narrative elements of that game just elevate it to the next level for me. I was never really able to explain the feeling that SMG1 gives me vs SMG2 until now. And Rosalina's storybook is beautiful, it nearly makes me cry every time I read it.
Can't believe this game is important enough to have its own iceberg. I was born the same year as this game, and I played the hell out of it when I was younger
The lonely, mysterious atmosphere of Galaxy 1 makes it my favorite Mario game to just experience. The sequel kind of killed the vibe. Good gameplay but they completely failed to capture that magic
41:08 I think the blue shell might have been a power up just like in Super Mario Bros DS. It could have given you the same abilities like in the DS. That's what I think the blue shell might have been.
I have no idea who you are, but a 50 minute video about a game I've never played and probably never will play is my jam. RUclips knows me well. Also I enjoyed it, so now I have a new channel to binge. Great video!
My personal headcanon is the Timpani and Blumiere from Super Paper Mario are Rosalina's parents! The only real "evidence" for it, is that we see what is presumably the both of them in their "human" forms on a hill with a tree on it after the credits of SPM. I suppose that an additional piece could be that Rosalina seems to capable of magic, much like Bleck.

This seems to suggest that they aren't the same character, although it could just be the universe reset thing. In fact, the Lumas in Galaxy 2 build the brigade a starshroom and the Toads don't seem to recognize it, so it's probably the reset thing
I mostly thought of this because of the wiggler thing though, so I guess it fits more with the 64 vid
And now some points about things that were actually on the iceberg.
7. They're secretly pieces of the Mirror of Twilight.
WAIT NO. THE MIRROR OF STARLIGHT.
Well the captain toad thing might be the same person because galaxy 2 is just a retelling. Like it's explaining sm1 again
Now I’m just imaging Luigi taking Mario’s mail
actually deep dark has 4 different skyboxes.
default
red creepy one
neon greenish creepy one
sky blue
you can find it by using the cannons in the scariest galaxy in the game
Fun Fact, you can actually find the Pikmin-esque ship in 3 locations in-game: there's *two* of it in Space Junk in 2 different locations and one of it in Ghostly Galaxy (also the Starman's Fort one). Both Space Junk duplicates are used, but the Ghostly one has no purpose in the final game.
Could we also count the Galaxy selection? Then we would have 4
@@Timerpoint That's true. But the model for that is different and only has one window, and is not the same object, but I guess that counts too.
The ghostly one is the real wreck of the Dolphin, flung into deep space to freeze and break apart in the cold depths of deep space. Long live Hocatate freight.
Thank you Koizumi for making the Rosalina story segments. Miyamoto was against it (as usual) but you pulled through and gave us something amazing.

@@thanatoast good job!
I'm so glad to see I'm not the only grown man who gets choked up at Rosalina's story.
Every Super Mario Galaxy copy is personalized
The part about the infinite size of space and the feeling of loneliness was amazing. Good work
now sunflower we need all the icebergs together called the iceberg collescion
The Iceberg Iceberg
Super Iceberg 3D allstars
Lawliet Industries it wouldn't include a galaxy 2 iceberg
Hey there I made this comment 2 weeks ago you know and or sunflower hearted me and i got 4 comments on this thank you, guys!
Rosalina's Telescope wasn't actually luigi's, remember, it was in a fake mansion, with fake decor in fake rooms. That, and Luigi (canonically) gets the rank E house (seen in LM2)
@Mr. TAD Ah, so Rosalina was Diavolo all along.
*It all makes sense now...*
also it is more plausible that peach is actually rosalina, in a old cycle of the universe. and thinking luigi is her dad is a bit stupid lol.
Plus the fact Rosalina and Peach were gonna be related but it was scrapped makes the theory “Peach is Rosalina’s mom” die
Actually it’s rank D
@Anthony Jones it’s actually Luigi circuit but if we count that as canon then that means luigis mansion dark moon and luigis mansion 3 are not canon
I like how this iceberg specifically is less cursed than the others. I was surprised, honestly. This is a really sweet video.
The storybook always without fail makes me cry. I keep telling myself, I'm not gonna cry, I'm not gonna cry, I'm not gonna cry, but then when it gets to the "She's sleeping under the tree" part. I just cry my eyes out
"hell valley sky trees"

Imagine a parent not understanding the Mario phone call and immediately hangs up

I always loved the loneliness of the first game- it gives me this indescribable feeling, in a positive way.
Love it, thanks for covering my iceberg!
Ayy
All good! thanks again for the help :)

The best thing I learned from this video is ear lobes can be “unattached” somehow
i love how wholesome this iceberg is as opposed to so many other icebergs. amazing work and an awesome video as the fruits of your efforts! i lost it at the screams of 128 italians part and the "SHES A DEMON" got me some too
About "SMG1's lonely atmosphere".
If some games got their mechanics from Mario 128 does that mean every copy of Mario 128 is personalized
oh god not again
In a cosmic sense yes. If we consider each game based off 128 just another copy of 128 then yes
/music plays
No freaking way, I was about to rewatch the Super Mario 64 iceberg
What if every Mario game where Mario has to rescue peach is just the universe reseting over and over again
What a nice video to watch and to listen to. Calm, well done... Rosalina narrative is so soft... Good video!
Also, the game series is treated with such respect
Thanks! Super Mario galaxy is quite special so I wanted to do the video properly
When I played Galaxy I never felt loneliness, all I felt was WAHOO THIS IS FUN!
This is awesome. I love Super Mario Galaxy and seeing such a deep dive into the game is so cool. Can't wait to see more! :)
Thank you so much for making an Iceberg on my favorite game. I learned so many new things!
Yo no worries, thanks for watching :)
37:26
imagine developing a game for several years only for people to point out some mega obscure accidental ctrl + v that you did, in some random, nameless area
A suprise to be sure, but a welcomed one.
The spherical bottle object that is upside down looks like a bomb from the Zelda series.
So I wasn't wrong by calling fountain as bathroom when I was young
It's so much more recognisable as a bathroom than a fountain. You were on big brain waves as a kid
Thanks for coming back to older videos and watching them too ✌️
You know that it's a good day when Sunflower posts a new video.
No, Not just an iceberg video, Just a video in general.
Yo, Big Marsh's Voice Sounds awesome, it also reminds me of Satoru Iwata's Voice.
My first ever Mario game and my favourite Mario game of all time, man I love these games
Can't believe this game is important enough to have its own iceberg. I was born the same year as this game, and I played the hell out of it when I was younger
gross 2007 kid 2005 is better
2D be seeing icebergs not helping murdoc with music singing-
The lonely, mysterious atmosphere of Galaxy 1 makes it my favorite Mario game to just experience. The sequel kind of killed the vibe. Good gameplay but they completely failed to capture that magic
30:48 imo it seems more of a “wait, we’re in space” tone
41:08 I think the blue shell might have been a power up just like in Super Mario Bros DS. It could have given you the same abilities like in the DS. That's what I think the blue shell might have been.
Just watching super Mario galaxy vids brings back memories of playing it hours on end
I dont know why, but you have a special way to explain the icebergs...
Thanks! I try to make these videos with my own personal touch
luigi actually makes reference to the "two luigis" thing from Mario Galaxy in Mario Odyessy, if Mario talks to Luigi while wearing Luigi's clothes.

I have no idea who you are, but a 50 minute video about a game I've never played and probably never will play is my jam. RUclips knows me well. Also I enjoyed it, so now I have a new channel to binge. Great video!
Heck yeah thanks
The automated message makes me so happy idk how to explain that like galaxy is such an amazing game and I love all the effort put into it
My personal headcanon is the Timpani and Blumiere from Super Paper Mario are Rosalina's parents! The only real "evidence" for it, is that we see what is presumably the both of them in their "human" forms on a hill with a tree on it after the credits of SPM. I suppose that an additional piece could be that Rosalina seems to capable of magic, much like Bleck.
Holy shit I can't believe I found another person who thought about this!! It's been one of my favorite headcanons for years
