Russia-Ukraine war, drought fuel hunger crisis in Africa | DW News

  • The UN says the Horn of Africa is experiencing its worst drought in four decades, and the problem is compounded by a lack of humanitarian aid.
As a result, millions could face famine in parts of Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia and Djibouti. The ongoing war in Ukraine is further worsening the already worrying situation. Somalia in particular is the worst affected. DW Correspondent Mariel Mueller traveled to the town of Dollow, where three camps for internally displaced people have sprung up in the last few months.
And it's not just the Horn of Africa facing a humanitarian crisis. Some West African countries are also struggling to meet food security demands. But the crisis there is mainly driven by Islamist insurgencies that have forced millions of people off their land in countries like Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger and Nigeria.
Many who rely on farming for their survival are prevented from accessing it. DW's Flourish Chukwurah went to Maiduguri in Nigeria to meet one farmer who's afraid to go back even though the government says it is safe to return.
But food security is just one of the issues affecting Africa. Leaders recognize the need for more collaborative solutions to make life bearable for many on the continent.
This week, politicians and other decision-makers from Africa and Europe got together in Berlin for what is called the Africa Roundtable. The event addressed topics including how the war in Ukraine is impacting lives across Africa. Decision makers at the event included, Amadou Hott, Senegal's Minister of Economy, Planning & Cooperation.

It is in some ways, but the thing is, in countries like that and in the past you had many children in hope that you'd have some surviving children. That's the reason why countries which have gained economic health have fewer children. India which have developed rapidly over the past 70 years since the 1950's have gone from roughly 5-6 children per woman to 2.5 children per woman, and the same goes for every country. Somalia has had civil war and terrorism for decades now, so they haven't had any real economic opportunities and that along with education, or lack there off and no access to birth control (and education about it) mean that the number of children is bound to be high.

Unfortunately, if the land can't sustain the current population, all external aid achieves, is exacerbate the problem long term...consider....if you fed one million starving people today, they survive to have more children, so now you have to feed two million people, and so it goes, ad-infinitum....So when do you stop giving aid? The droughts are more frequent, the situation has been unsustainable for decades, and it can only deteriorate. Long term, any population should not outstrip the capability of the land they occupy, to sustain them...sad, but the inevitable result is that the population must dramatically shrink to reach some form of balance with the environment.
Throwing more and more external resources at an unsolvable problem is doomed to fail.. External aid is like sticking a plaster on a cut finger while the body is in cardiac arrest..... morally the thing to do, but....... utterly pointless!

Western people are paying for others to have children in their own countries already. The state I left pays a single mom $49K a year for just having two children. Imagine that. That is someone else's money created by someone else's labor. Anyone can reproduce. When it's financially rewarded this way, it encourages people reproducing for pay. I would make benefits conditional. Some kind of implantable birth control must be used in order to receive the benefits. If you can't feed your kid, you get to have ONE on someone else's dime.

Wonderful. There is would actually be a godsend if the "if it rains, it pours" is taken literally. Climate change is going to make those kinds of problems far more frequent and far wider spread. We asked for it, we are starting to get it, but we haven't seen ANYTHING yet.
And our kids and their kids will see FAR worse, if it isn't fixed, assuming it even can be at this point, which I'm starting to seriously doubt. There are already very large unforeseen positive feedback systems showing up, of the level mankind cannot possibly reverse. If there aren't some negative feedback systems showing up and acting very quickly, 'we' (the human race) are possibly already screwed.
Yeah, broken record, but it is SERIOUS, and it is but one of many of critically important aspects of human survival that are quickly becoming permanent and irreversible, like oceans fished out 90%, by direct chosen points census, water drying up everywhere due to over-consumption (already wars being fought over it), and arable lands disappearing at alarming rates, with virtually no more to be had. We really are reaching, or have reached possible points of no return.

In Ghana also problematic economy accordingly the pandemic crisis resulted - when my son and I had a stage of malnutrition, we had helpful foodstuffs from Russia-Ukraine ladies as our court's maintenance is very low and we passed into a trap of no home as politicians had a failure, 2016, we faced fraud of many including agents, they rob us (tenants). Minimized foodstuffs, possible to do window shopping, expensive drinking water with inflation... Nutritional foodstuffs are difficult to afford, while time after time my son and I are glad to have good food, always expensive room-bathroom, and currently cemented floor to sleep on it for the overpayment.

Cargill dumped grain into Somalia at 1/6th the local price thereby driving out the farmers that controlled Mogadishu. that's how U.S. Imperialism uses food as a weapon.

Ehm theres a grain (pun intentet) of truth in that somehow, let me explain.
If countries continue to supply needed goods and food to Africa they will never be able to start their own business. Noone can compete with free.
Saying that USA is using it as a weapon is BS.
What should be done is giving Africans contacts in the rest of the world so they will be able to export their manufactured goods. Eventually paying for the shipment for a period of time would be a good help.

@@101GM8 in this case there is some truth to it, Africa doesn’t need charity- it needs investment. It needs technology, more accessible educational institutions, better opportunities and infrastructure to conduct life with few impediments.

It's like the line from Mary Poppins; "What do you get when you feed the birds?", "More birds." The population of Somalia has increased 4.5x in 50 years.

I see a bunch of comments about having less children:
They have so many kids because they need to, they don’t have much electricity and good infrastructure, so they resort to human labor- that requires lots of children.
Also so many of the kids die, they have lots of kids as an insurance. So sad.
Also no birth control and it’s a patriarchal culture.

If they educated their daughters, rather than selling them as brides while still children, the birthrate could be brought down. They don't need to have so many children, they are a drain on the family's resources, not a help.
