Imagine, a nation that cares about it's citizens. Inconceivable.
You know, "socialism," lmao.
Truly inconceivable in this country - imagine that the rich would be automatically willing to pay their fair share, and the government (that wouldn't be corrupt) would then put the money where necessary.
And also, we could eventually score better in the worldwide questionary about feeling happy and content with our lives since we are still far from the medal positions in this "sport."
And for the "best country in the world," this is a significant failure.

We also have senators like, e.g., Bernie Sanders and others who care about us; the problem is that we are stupid and consider their program, God, forgive, socialism!

By the people, for the people. Sometimes the government takes a bit too much care for the citizens, though.
As a Finn I found this video interesting in showing how much we take for granted. I've been to many of these bunkers for sports etc but never really paid a second thought to them. There are numerous smaller ones all around in different cities, and many apartment buildings have their own bomb shelter too.
It feels so normal I just expected every country to have them.
No we don't have them. It's very cool. I think it's useful for natural disasters as well. I'm in Canada, we have the odd small tornado and that's it so not really needed. I really hope we never have to regret not having them. this world is getting stupider by the day.
That network of bunkers is probably almost unique worldwide. Maybe the Japanese, Swedes, Norse, Icelanders and the Dutch have them too. Israel has some form of it too, though it seems like individual bunkers, not a network like what you have in Finland. What you guys have is *very* impressive. Putin has no chance if he tries Finland. It comforts me and makes me proud to call you allies.
German here. No, we dont have those. We dont have any bunkers anymore really.
Every country doesn't have a UN Security Council member neighbor who has a recent history of invading neighbors and annexing their land.
I'm moving to Finland, lol. You think they will accept an American? 🤣
As a Finn who used to live in Helsinki but is currently living abroad, this video kinda makes me want to go back. Used to go to these places all the time and it didn't feel like a big deal at the time.
I will always go back for sure.
As an American, I am very impressed with the immense size bunkers in Finland! You guys are one tough people! My hats off to your nation!!
If you are a small neighbor next to barbarians like Russia you are better off to prepare for the worst case scenario as we see in the Ukraine...
We have them too .we just aren't on the invite list .Its only for the rich and key government.

The Finns have made all the right social choices for themselves since the Winter War. I am very, very impressed with them and the scale of the infrastructure shown in this report. Absolutely flabbergasted that something like that exists.
I'm Canadian and I am very, very happy and proud to call the Finns allies.
As an American I'm downright impressed. Fortunately (?) since I live near a large Naval base I don't have to worry about survival after a nuclear war since I'll be radioactive dust in the upper atmosphere.
Take your comfort where you can.
Siding with the Nazis in the Continuation War after the Winter War? Really?
Yeah, it's the right ones that Ukraine should have made. The video rudely reminds us that Ukrainians have only train-stations and threaters for "bomb shelters," because of its world famous democracy of organized crime syndicates, which appalled even Donald Trump. That's exactly why nobody wants to talk about how much of Western aid is actually getting to battle-fronts.

Most of europe is in Nato and under a nuclear umbrella, making any such thing utterly redundant.
Maybe the defense part. But, as a resident I can tell you that, building and designing new suburbs and transportation is crap.
@@kevjtnbtmglr Can you name some examples?
@@kaljamaha16 We are losing parks and our last city forests, even tho' there is ample land to build without. Such as fields. We literally have farmer's fields in our capital in large amounts. They are not farmed, just doing nothing.
Commuting with public transport is difficult unless going from and to city center. Even our mayor Vapaavuori could not have a tunnel made to make commuting easier.
Lots of party politics, and voters who are not local or do not plan to even live here but they still vote.
Having the shelter open to the public during peacetime and using it to host family and children's activities serves a important purpose. Citizens and children especially will associate the shelter with positive memories, reducing fear and anxiety, and giving a sense of comfort and safety in the event they ever have to be used for shelter.
Exactly this. It's a morale boost. The will to survive and fight is everything in war. What's more, the Finns become familiar with the fact that they are their own people and nation that take care of one another by building projects like these. The Russians can invade, but they can never occupy successfully.
That's a very good point. Apart from saving the tax payers money by using the place for other peacetime purposes it also integrates the shelter with the population.
Yes, one shelter, where I trained martial arts, had area for that. Gym and much more. Didn´t venture far enough to see it all. And this was provincial shelters, not capital area.
If that was open to the public in the USA you know how many homeless people would run in there and in two days the place would be filthy and nasty 🤢🤢🤢
Also just the fact that it's expensive to build and maintain if it's never used. It's very clever to use them like that.
Here in Denmark we've gotten "too comfortable". We still have shelters that are supposed to be ready within a week or so, should stuff go downhill. But it's basically only the fire departments that know where they are, because we've removed the signage in peace time. And not all of them are being looked after very much.
On the other hand, Denmark doesn't have much bedrock to talk of. So we'd need a whole lot of concrete and digging to come close to what Helsinki is doing.
I'm impressed.
I'm moving to Finland, how awesome is it that their government is prepared to look after their people this way. Kiitos Finland!

In Finland highways are strategically built so that they go through solid rock corridors every so often - purpose is that in case of invasion these corridors will be blown to block the highways.
Also all highway junctions are built by law in a manner that they can / will be mined and cannot be bypassed around.
Its almost stupidly funny how engrained it is to us to "be prepared just in case" but thats what ~300 years of being a battleground between Sweden-Russia and and living in a rough climate causes.

@@j.lahtinen7525 We both know the difference between corruption and "good brother network" atleast based on your name
@@s1ubbe Yes, but that is extremely minor stuff compared to the vast majority of the rest of the world.
Compare, for example, the US. There bribery of politicians has been essentially legalized. The party in power can also re-draw the voting district lines to split the supporters of the other party up so that most districts have a majority of your supporters, and thus while the other party may get more votes, you get more representatives. (This is gerrymandering, and it too is legal.)
Corruption on all levels is more a norm in human societies than the exception. Finland has comparatively extreme low levels of corruption.

This is what CAN happen if your country is not corrupt with billions of dollars wasted like Russia has done on a select few people ! - Finland is perhaps the least corrupt country in the world.
What?
Crime in Finland alone is more than twice that of my country, Scotland, per capita. Corruption (white collar) is likewise reported to be higher. Finland scores better in transparency, but with two countries ahead.
Sadly we do have corruption in Finland. It's known here as "dear brother networks" or "old boy networks" where e.g. almost all government positions are handed out to loyal political party members, their relatives or people acquainted with each other and already working in high places (instead of the candidate with actual competence and suitable academic degree for the position). This type of corruption has infiltrated all branches of government and has severe negative impact to Finnish society.

Smart kids are a country's greatest future asset regardless of material resources the territory provides.
lol, they tried that in France, it does'nt work. What everybody seems to forget is that Finland is teaching finish kids. They have almost no poverty , they have almost no major social problems , no violence, no crime. They have mostly quite wealthy families with no major social issues. The thing is: anything would work in this kind of setting. The result for Romania, (that I love and respect , but happen to bne aware of some difficulties) is it's going to get worse for your children, they will lurn less, you'll end up with a record score of illiteracy, jsut like France that used to be the best educational sytem in the world, befor they started to implement ideological nonesense. In reality Finland always prepared only for soviet invasions. The West was never the enemy for Finland - and definitely not for the Finnish military. The enemy has always come from the East.
Everything in Finland is built to withstand war, invasion from east. All the communication equipment, critical servers are located in bunkers. Roads can be blocked with bridges, bridges must collapse neatly with explosives to deter advancement and roads have been built funnel like, easy to cover with artillery. The reason is, we were not ready 1939, it did cost a lot of Finnish lives. After it, we have had a law to get ready, next invasion is going to cost too much no sense of trying. Joining Nato is the final jewel, we decide who comes here.

Russia are weak as fuck by the time ukraine is done with them they ll be sitting back threatening with there nukes cause its all those murdering cowards have.
Now he will have to think 3 times or more :)
Well, he does have his hand on their electricity.
I'm amazed at this, I think it's the most forward thinking idea of a country wanting to provide and protect its citizens with protection from any kind of threat they could receive in the future.
This is interesting to hear because, for us, this level of preparation reminds us about the Cold War.
We could have scaled back in the 1990s and the 2000s, but I'm glad we didn't.
Wow!, Finnish protection of its population is amazing. Self Governance, Self Defense and not relying on NATO to defend against Russian Agression made possible with belief in such an incredible BUNKER system
Putler has shown that neutrality is no longer an option when neighboring Russia and Finns like to have independence. Even Russian minority likes it.
Finland is waiting for the tomorrow's opinion of mr. Erdogan , the designer of the Ottoman odd democracy.
@@scanpolar Mustafa Kemal created Turkish democracy. Erdogan is doing his best to erode it.

Wow.am a fin/Kenyan and very happy to see how this country supports his people..God protect Finland.

You know who doesn’t complain about taxes?
Yeah, these people!
Complaining about taxes isn't constructive. You're never going to get rid of them and maintain the living standards you're used to as a citizen of a developed country.
That said, people should be absolutely vigilant about where their hard-earned money goes. If you pay premium, you want value in return.

I rarely complain about taxes because I see a return in the form of services and infrastructure.
We hosted a Finn Exchange student for a year over 30 years ago. We were told by her Husband about the long time building of underground shelters. I did not realize they were that extensive.
this is just a fraction of all the tunnels under helsinki that are in constant use by everyone from ambulances to carbage trucks.
The Finish Bunker system reminds me of the Bunkers in Switzerland.
It's only done because if your neutral, you may not have any enemies but that also means you don't have any friends

I am Finnish and I haven't heard or seen anything about any terrorists here - ever. I think Turkey is referring to Sweden that has had some unrest in that regard. But still, we should both get to join as we clearly meet the demands of membership. Especially Finland will strengthen NATO in many ways. And, we are very calm and collected people so we are good aliies in keeping peace in Europe.
Turkey is pissed at Sweden because Sweden has banned export of their weapons to them (arguing it would be used against the kurds). If they get a lift on that ban..all will be fine.
That may be true and respect for Finland, but they should have joined years ago. It doesnt seem to be an instant membership
There's a log in the Turkey's eye. The place is a dictatorship
Turkey 🇹🇷 shouldn’t be the one talking about theorist in Finland 🇫🇮 or Sweden 🇸🇪 turkey should look in the mirror 🪞.
Turkey isn’t objecting it’s using this political opportunity to get a bit of cash.
To me they are mainly clever routes to avoid bad weather when walking in the centre. It's a bit of local knowledge wizardry to disappear underground and appear almost anywhere above ground :)
Just shows ya how much the Finnish Government genuinely cares for it's people. I would most certainly come back in the next life as a Finnish citizen.
Welcome!
You can always move here :)
The fact that Russia's neighbours feel the need for over 50,000 bunkers in a country whose population is less than 6 million tells us all we need to know about Russia
It is worth noting that these bunkers began construction in the 50's and 60's as Finland was worried about its neighbors remembering that they helped the Nazis during the 40's. Both Russia and the Western democracies looked at Finland with suspicion for a long time.
Russia is savage country
It's stupid to even trust it
Exactly

Funny how journalists ask Finns about the reasons for applying NATO, they want to hear how we are "suddenly" scared by Russian aggression. There is nothing "suddenly" scaring us, we have been aware of Russia's existence and power politics all along. From WWII, all of our presidents have had direct contact with the Kremlin. We have traded with Russia, we have cherished good relations, tried to set our words accordingly, someones are even talking about "Finlandization". But as everyone can see from this reportage, there has always been vigliant attitude about threaths. And Russia has always been one of the possible threath. Always.
Already some time ago, even before attacking Ukraine, Russia has changed its attitude and actions, and we have made own own conclusions.
We Finns have seen for thousand years what it means to live next to Russia or Novgorod. Every bit of short peace is always followed by brutal invasion, war or raids leading to pillaging, burning of villages or mass rapes and murder. To think that it would suddenly go away after 100 years of brutal communism is to be foolish.
To sum up what it mean to be a Finnish: always hope for the best but by Perkele, dig through the grey bedrock to be prepared for the next war! You can never be prepared enough.
If you don't prepare for the winter you will die and if you don't prepare for when the Russians will come next, you will die.
@@alaric_ I think we're catching on.
@sakor88 Change "thousands" for "hundreds". Everything else is very valid.
I remember going to that pool during childhood family trips to FInland. Never knew it was bunker but I recognized it immediately lol

Wow! Do the locals know it’s a nuclear bomb shelter? It’s the state of the art bunker.
@@shonuff4690 I used to do competitive swimming and that place (Itäkeskus swimming hall is the place) was one of our main training halls. As some other commenters have said, these kind of underground facilities are so common in Helsinki that people don't really pay that much attention to them. I knew that they could double as bunkers but did not for example know that they could withstand a nuclear strike.
@@kapuseta Same experience. I played floorball in those. You know it but you rarely think about the actual purpose because they are so common. There's one in my apartment block for example and I see the metal door every time I go outside. If anything I thought those were a universal thing and nothing specific for Finland.
We also have bunkers under many apartment buildings. They are also double use. Usually they are used for storage and maybe for a small gym and/or sauna. 🙂
Yea because every new appartment building is by law required to have a bomb shelter.

wow, the legend of the white death, and an underground bunker to hold their whole population...plus visitors. That's bad to the bone. Props to Finland!
Wow. The Finns are kinda awesome. They have their priorities right.
I love everything about Finland. When I worked in the power industry, managers loved to talk about "benchmarking." Well, world leaders all over need to do some benchmarking and go to Finland to see how things are done there.

Damn Finland is definetly prepared. I know that there are a lot of bunkers in western european countries from the cold war era, but i doubt much of them are usable in a short term. There was simply no need to maintain them. Finland obviously thought different.
We are not rich enough to just waste money to nice to have stuff. The dual functionality is a bid deal.
That is what happens when you have lived next to a bully for so long.
We have many nice neighbours and a really wacky one.

Finland = Winland, very impressive ! Proud to have them as our allies :)
Finland have a Gentle and very strong People and very civilized and putin knows that and he also know how strong and big Army they have
Using some of the bunkers facilities during peacetime is a very smart move. I imagine it will make the transition into the bunkers a lot easier for those that have already spent time there which will have a knock on effect for others. It'll work best with the kids who already look forward to using the facilities there as we see here.
Fantastiska Finland och dess Folk!
Damn. Finland not joking about.
I've never seen a bomb shelter with a swimming pool and hockey playfield before.
I got a shelter in the mountain just down my street here in Norway. It is my local shooting range! (and nowhere near as fancy as Finlands).
To be fair that swimming pool would probably be emptied if there was a war so more people could fit in. 🙂
Incredible. Russia is crazy if they think they could ever take these guys on, its pretty clear that Finland has a functional government that cares about its people.

From the US... I 100% support Finland and Sweden being accepted into NATO. When I read in the news that Turkey was making that process difficult, my heart just sank. It’s encouraging to get more news on that issue... optimism that any of Turkey’s concerns can be ironed out.
I had such high hopes through the 90s and early 2000s that maybe Russia was finally, finally, FINALLY going to rid themselves forever of their totalitarian tendencies and develop into a true democracy.
