Africa faces a looming food crisis as Ukraine War drags on | DW News

  • Russia's war on Ukraine is pushing the world's most vulnerable countries into a food security crisis. Many of these states are in Africa, which rely heavily on Russia and Ukraine for wheat, fertilizer and vegetable oil imports. Earlier this week, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy told the African Union the situation is catastrophic.
    The fighting has disrupted global commodity markets and trade to the African continent, raising food prices and creating more shortages. World leaders are gathering in Germany to address the looming global hunger crisis, DW takes a look at Sudan, which is just one of the African countries facing an urgent need to alleviate growing hunger.
    And South Africa is also feeling the effects of the war in Ukraine. The covid 19 pandemic already triggered a growing economic crisis. And now, surging food prices and unemployment is forcing many into homelessness. But one center is trying to keep people off the streets.

      Africa's issue pertaining to this crisis is NOT food, but high fuel costs (diesel in particular) and probably fertilizer. With respect to the later at least Russia hasn't placed an embargo on sales and is still open to the African continent. That said, this whole DW report is just a huge pile of 💩

      @@HShango Are you then suggesting that it is NOT African countries fault that they don't have factories for production?
      As a South African, I can honestly say that yes, it is the fault of these so-called leaders that Africa is not self reliant. SA was an industrial powerhouse, but thanks to the incompetent and thieving ANC, so much manufacturing has been shipped off to China. Did you know that we don't even refine our own diamonds and gold? This gets bloody shipped off to first world countries and is propping up the Swiss economy!
      It came as a surprise to me to learn that we are importing 40% of our sunflower oil from Ukraine. I do understand that during apartheid, farmers were not providing for the entire population, but 28 years down the line, how is it that we have not closed the gaps? Instead, land has been reclaimed in certain cases by the tribal chieftains and more often than not, has become unproductive.
      We need to take responsibility for poor governance. People voted for those that rule over us. Africa should be self reliant. And South Africans need to end their sense of entitlement. People need to take a hard look around and see the decay and start doing something about it.

      Got nothing to do with birth control. Over consumption in the west is what is driving scarcity around the world. One European or American consumes more resources than 1000 or more people in developing countries in a day. That's where the problem lies. Over consumption in the developed world.

Africa is going though rapid urbanization making less farmers and more hungry mouths in cities. The only solution is for African nations to have access to the capital nessacary to grow their own extensive agribusiness that covers fertilizers, equipment, and expertise with both. This won't happen as long as the francophone countries don't even have control of their own currency or when America n Europe sanction fertile countries like Zimbabwe who then cannot access the capital needed to do industrial farming. The west has screwed them both ways cause they want them dependent and weak to their corporatations who will take any food they grow in the continent back to Europe or America or Asia. • @KJSvitko

    Population needs to be in balance with jobs, resources, nature and the environment. Having a bigger population in any country than the country can support makes no sense. Access to food, water, shelter and jobs should guide population levels. The worlds population is still expected to add another billion people to feed, clothe and produce pollution. Humans are crowding out all other species of plants and animals. Education and birth control are key to reducing poverty and hunger. Having a child that you can not provide for yourself is cruel and irresponsible. We need solutions not just sympathy. Endless population growth is not sustainable on a finite planet. Every country needs to "TRY" to be more self sufficient. When there are not enough resources to sustain a population something has to give. Countries need to focus on quality of life for their citizens and not just quantity of life for cheap labor.

    This narrative won't turn the tide of public opinion on the continent. Wheat is not a staple for majority of Africa's population. Prior to the war Europe also wasted a lot of bread, several tonnes per day, for the sake of the environment the war should force farmers around the world to produce what they eat locally as oppossed to producing to bankrupt potential competition.

    Corrupt governments in Africa is the real problem

  • @manwiththestar2305
    @manwiththestar2305 2 года назад +2

    Africa believes that the west should feed Africa. And this is not a good idea. Africa should in short start planning in general but also start family planning to end the hunger. Africas problems are mainly of the type overpopulation by western intervention and by Africa not taking responsibility. This will not be changed by giving Africa a free lunch. Africa needs to find its own way without investment from the west because we have always seen that the investmenst in Africa are always seen like a problem with white people in Africa. This is the sad state of Africas problems but will not change until Africa starts to feel free. And money or food from other continents are not the solution. Africa needs to feel free and find its own way however hard that way might be. The best thing the west can do to help Africa is to not allow migration from Africa and to not send food or money. Might sound hard but that would be in the best interest of Africa. To force Africa in western ways is to lose Africa and for Africa to not evolve. The west have to have patience with Africa and not feed a systemic problem because this will only worsen the problem and make a bigger problem. Africa is a huge continent. So why tiny states in the west should feed a huge continent that in return not liking people from the west or guilt the west are the craziest construction on this planet. Given the climate it should be the other way around. Africa should be expected to elvove on its own and to support the rest oft the world that doesnt have the same fantastic climate and opportuity of this fantastic climate that exist in Africa. The way forward are not to force Africa but to let African states decide if they wat to be left alone or be open for investment but not to socialize every investment the west does because the expropriation of private investments are a huge problem for investment in Africa. One day they say come invest and the next day the investment is gone. So this view that Africa have on the other continents have to stop and Africa are the onlyones to stop it. Africa needs to find its way to western values if they wants what these values provide. Strange to say but I believe that feminism or the streghtening of womens right in Africa can be the first step. A important step to fast become modernized.

    I heard about this type of thing going to college in 2014, we have crippled what effective farms they had because we could supply it cheaper with subsidized standardized mechanical farming.
