In this vid, I walk through installing a new Air Cleaner on the Harley Iron 883. Please note, I don't have one specific model or brand of air cleaner. As the jugs on my bike are slightly out a alignment, the OEM air filter system works, as it has a little bit of play in it. However, air cleaners that have a rigid backing plate don't work so well with jugs that are barely out of alignment, as the breather bolts do not line up correctly.
Thus, my 'air cleaner' is a hybrid of parts from Amazon, DK Customs, and Home Depot, haha. Blockhead exclusive! BUT, I've listed all the parts to build out exactly what I have if you so choose, from original kit to external hose style breather system.
Taking off the stock air cleaner is going to be the same for most Sportsters (mine's a 2013 Iron 883,) but depending on what air cleaner you go with, follow the installation instructions provided to you by the manufacturer.
As always, use caution when doing mods to your bike! If you're not comfortable doing a mod, get some help from a friend who is, or see a mechanic. And if you have any questions, please post up and I'll answer when I'm able to the best of my knowledge.
Thanks for watching, and I hope it helps some of you out there that are possibly considering installing a new air cleaner / stage 1 kit!
Ride safe out there!

Thinking of putting one on my 2005. But since mine has a Carburetor I have to jump through hoops and get a jet kit. Thanks for the video
Good video. Glad you have a system that works for you. I actually am using the DK 587 but with the chrome cover. No problems so far, everything is tight. Although I'm not using one of DK's special bolts, just the standard one and everything's been great. I am also running their external breather bolts and those work great too. A little blow by but nothing to major. My next plan is to actually upgrade to the same external breather system you just installed, going to wait for better weather though. Not all of us get to enjoy 50 degree weather as their winter lol. As always ride safe my friend.
Yeah when speaking with a guy on the phone at DK Customs, he said he's been running one for thousands of miles and it hasn't given him any probs, but he has the standard one as well, AND on top of that, said he didn't even put loctite on it. So the problem w/ my previous one was definitely the specialty bolt. The hose / filter style external breather system seems to be doing well so far, haven't seen any blowby on the bike since changing over. The 50 degree weather lasted for a few days, we're back up to 70's - 80's and humidity, haha. Our summers are pretty terrible though, so suppose that's a balance. Ride safe sir!
yes this is the way I would do it too, I see some bikes that have the hoses down I take it they leak still waiting one my set up thanks
Victor here, have another idea for your air cleaner if you did not get the grommets I put two skulls one on each side but I want to suggest maybe two black spikes like the ones you put for your seat or license plate just add the back washer oil flow looks real nice check it out.
Great video as mate, taught me a lot, although I've not done anything to my iron apart from new grips. Sorry did you do a video how to install bag on swing fm. The link was riding and taking pics of sun set, lol, which was cool by the way. Ta Ian.
Thanks for the kind words and support! No install vid yet on swing arm bag, hadn't planned on doing one but have received a few requests for it, so I'll add it to the list! As for link, must have linked up wrong or something, not sure? haha, thanks again
Hello,
Do you usually ride in the rain with this filter or when it rains do you use a protection? Thans
I liked to put this filter in my iron but here in Portugal it usually rains with some regularity, and that is a doubt that I have.
thank you
Can you add the external breathing system on any air intake? Or does it have to be like the one on the video?
I love the Imperial Cog logo on your oil tank. Could you please send me a link soi can get some?
Blockhead, so the DK Customs breather bolts didn't really do what its suppose to? I was thinking of getting them as I'm getting blow by from my V&H V02.
Good video:) Does that specific breather - bring in enough air for stage 1? Thanks in Advance
What’s the difference b/w catch can system breather vs this external filter breather system. Both are available at DK Customs. Please explain. Thnx!!
I love your channel
I just got a 2021 48
I can’t wait to do the stage 1 I love it!!! I should have gotten a Harley much earlier!
Cant figure out this issue I have. Bike lags boggs out in 4th and 5th gear and lots of backfire on decel. my local harley shop wants me to dyno it which is very expensive. Do you think putting a new air cleaner on it would help it has slipon Vance and Hines pipes. Not sure what to do any help is appreciated.
Do I need an external breather? Or can I install the air cleaner with K&N filter replacement and that’s it?
I’ve never seen anyone uses External breathers that’s why I’m asking.
Hi Blockhead. Do you have to use the support bracket? Just ordered for DKcustums but forgot the bracket =/
do you tune after install the pipe and air cleaner? what you use?
How about the size socket for the air breather bolts!!!
Hi sir you have 2 air cleaner,,where do you get the smaller one? Thank you
very nice! what is the model of seat? thanks
Question, the time you had with your breather filter has it leaked at anytime. I like the way you installed it (up) instead of down word, is the breather holding up.
No leaks at all. The breather bolts have the metal pieces that stick upwards out of the engine, which holds the hoses and the filter up :)
Hope this isn’t a stupid question, but I switched the air filter and the first time I attempted to turn it on it struggled a little bit. Is that normal or will it continue to happen
So i bought this one for my 05 1200. Tge bracket hitbthe top of the carburator and i cant get it flush with carb. Is this not 1200 compatible?
What if I just put the air intake, do I still a tune up?
I like the new air cleaner ...it's bitchen and flows with the style your going for.
Thanks!
Do u have to tune anything after the install.I bought the same filter and it's great but I'm curious about the tuning.
you should yes
is the passenger peg usable with those pipes?
Hey Buddy! Great video!! I have the same air filter and wanna install on my Forty Eight, but I’m missing the braket.. could you olease share the link where you got yours? and also the breather ? Looks awesome 🤘🏾
Anyone know what size socket used to remove the breather bolts? I need to get a deeper one but unsure on size. Mine are too shallow. Great video.
Did you find out
Where’s the seat from? Looks comfortable..
hi. It would fit on a Roadster 2016?
Do You need tuner after install air intake ?
What size socket is used to take off the breather bolt please?
If I change the exhaust pipes can I keep stock air filter
What's the breather bolt head size? I'll need a deep socket and I don't want to buy a full kit
Please link used parts, thanks
Hey Blockhead, just bought a 2017 Iron 883 thanks to your vids!
I'm looking at getting the V&H Short Shots - did you have any issues when you just upgraded just your exhaust without any other Stage 1 mods?
The Harley dealership were reluctant to sell me just the Short Shots on their own as they said I really need the full Stage 1 so there's no engine issues but wasn't sure how true that is?
Thanks!
Your engine has to be tuned after a upgrade... for air fuel mix.. So it's kinda true.
I live in the UK and I would like to go with your set up. I have found the Air Filter that you used, but could you give me the Part No of the Backing Bracket for the Breather Bolts that you purchased from DK Customs please.
Did you find out wher to buy in UK those bolts? I got supercharger in my xl1200 and there is also similar hose between two breather bolts. I think to change it for smaller air filter same as on video. I think this breather bolts are important
What size bolts do you need to take them off ??
Is the air filter year specific or could I use it on a 2022
Love the look of the clear plate on this. Have you had any issues with it cracking from the pressure or vibrations of the motor?
Yeah, EFI "no-filter" increased air-flow, aftermarket products usually end with a bike in a local H-D shop or home garage to clean out all of the road debris and air detritus sucked into the throttle body. Trashing a catalytic converter can cost a lot for road rehab too.
My iron is giving error P0505, it's difficult to fix it, do you know how I can do it?
is there any vids like this for a honda shadow
Hey Blockhead how did you plug up the holes for the backing plate?
+Steven Trujillo Self adhesive silicone tape #Gangstah
@@BlockheadMoto hi, 1st of all thanks for the video, awesome!! I'm installing this kit, do you have a pic or follow up video to see how you plug up the holes? Thanks!
Hey did you re-tune and what settings with the fuel pack did you use?
I was going to ask this question David im looking at aVH fp3 fuel pack. Want to no how you set it for this air filter.
How about when it rain ?
Use grommets to fill in the plate holes
+victor vazquez That's an awesome idea! Thanks :)
Will water get in through breather or filter.
do you remplace the jets???
I have the same filter you need to leave the throttle body support bracket on to fit correctly
As I posted on your other comment, support bracket wasn't the problem, it's the alignment of the jugs that is off on my bike, which causes the breather bolts not to line up with a rigid backing plate. Nothing to do w/ the support bracket.
I don't see how the jugs can be out of alignment and the engine hasn't blown yet. But who am I to say. Sorry for trying to help
As I posted on your other comment; I appreciate you trying to help, no apology needed, don't take it the wrong way. My reply was supposed to be meant as informative to you, as I've talked to numerous people about the issue. The jugs are able to be off by a 'fraction' and not blow up, hence why HD designed the back of their large plastic air filter housing to have some play w/ the breather bolts. It's still within spec, but for rigid backing plates, it unfortunately doesn't work / line up correctly. Ride safe! :)
Won’t those tubes rattle and melt by the engines heat and movement? What’s the leg clearance because it looks like the intake sets far out?
Way better clearance then huge stock one that's for sure. But can't ride in rain so not to sure about this air cleaner, I've got screaming eagle cleaner it's same size and shape as stock air box but isn't enclosed on the inside it's all open on the inside and I run a k&n filter in it with vnh short shots re mapped by harley and it flies, 0 100 feels really 👍
How is this intake working out for you? I currently have a screamin eagle intake that uses the stock existing intake housing but am looking to get something that's a bit nicer looking.
+MrSXys WildRide Working out great!
I have the same intake as you pretty sure the not enclosed screamin eagle with k&n, I'd stick to it, it's best your going to get it term's of performance and not having to worry about rain, plus it's a much bugger filter it can hold more dirt then that little one, as cool as it looks.
Do you use a rain sock for it? Anything to protect it from water?
Yeah, that's what I'm wondering.. :-)
Does anyone know if this would bolt up to a buell blast carb
I don’t know if i missed it but is the external breathing system with the hoses included with the kit? Or that’s bought separate?
All parts are sperate, only whole kit is the air filter with its stock bolt on kits, blockhead used parts bought to fit onto DK customs bracket
where can i buy the external intake?
Blockhead, im new to bike. may i know the difference between stage 1 and stock air filter?
Stage 1 includes air filter, exhaust and a re map tune which is usually changing the fuel and air mixture to suit your new stage 1 set up. You can install the parts without the tune but it will go and sound much better with a tune.
Hey blockheads , how is that Amazon intake system working out for you so far , I'm looking into putting one on my nightster , I have Vance and hines short shots on it and wanna add and intake and fuel management . Most air cleaners are stupid expensive and that one is so cheap I wanna try it but wanted to make sure it was a safe way to go . I love the looks of it too ! let me know what you think so far . thank you in advance I love your channel !!
Working great so far, got no problems with it! Just be sure to buy a legit K&N filter, I think the one it comes with is a knock off. This is the one that fits it, it's the one I bought - amzn.to/2rBeQCY
Also purchased the rain guard that fits it here - amzn.to/2rB4GCg
did u have to use a fuel pack for this ?????
Would you recommend this air cleaner?
I have the same one. It's cheap, but it works. The anodizing faded after about a year, it's more of a bronze now.
Just installed DK Custom's external breather with the catch can, not too sure how I like the look. How's the external breather with the filter working for you? Do you smell the oil or is there any mist? Does it go anywhere?
Remove the filter and purchase of ebay a 200ml or 300ml oil catch can and replace the filter with that.
You may need to secure the catch can though as it might be abit heavy
Hast du die Motorschrauben auch mit Locktide gesichert?
Gruß aus Deutschland😊
Did you have the stage one tuner done as well?
Yes he would have prior to install, he's used multiple air filters in the past.
Are those suitable for rainy days as well or do I need a cover for it?
What gas do you use in your bike? Just picked up a 2019
Brother, I have never used anything other than 93 Octane on any bike HD or foreign. That and your synthetic oil are the life of your bike
HELP Plz !! Do I need to remap or reprogram ECU after putting Aftermarket Airfilter ????
Khalid Abdulla yes
@@orbelgalvarado I just fixed this on my HD 48 - and must say it Awsome, I got instant throttle increased, the Exausut got so much Louder. Loving it - Not sure am gonna do a reprogramming . Just so impressed from the performance of this cheap AliExpress Airfilter

Isnt ok for rain?
I bought one it was better than the stock one make sure you cover it up though dont get it too wer6
Hey Blockhead, is it possible to run an air intake setup like this but instead of using an extra plate can you run just the breather bolts in place of the internal breather setup?
Not sure what you mean? The external breather bolts replace the internal breather setup, so yeah if you go w/ an external, it won't vent internally. As for the extra plate, I assume you're talking about the rear mounting plate that goes on the throttle body? Not sure if you'd be able to run one without that, as it makes all the spacing correct, but possibly. Best way to find out is to order the parts and try it out! :)
BLOCKHEAD yeah I mean just using the kit as it comes but using external breather bolts instead of the ones supplied with the kit.
Originally, I was using this setup venting externally to atmosphere even though the air cleaner system was designed to vent internally. I'm still venting externally, but now into hoses and to the filter so blowby doesn't get on the side of the bike.
BLOCKHEAD alright thanks man! I ordered a filter and will probably use external breather bolts. Keep up the videos! it sucks being in New York this time of year :(
where did you get your breather bolts?
I got mine at DK Customs
your welcome
I have to ask sir I’m doing this tomorrow to mine hehe.
Anyways what would be a good breathable cover for it in the rain ?
Have you got a rain sock? If so, can you link. I just got one of these air cleaners too
Breather bolt size??
2019 sportster custom?
At 1:57 - What size socket?
How does this new air filter affect the performance of the motorcycle?
wanting to know this too
how does that little filter ride with those flexible hoses?
So far so good! Tucked out of the way, doesn't hit the tank or anything, doesn't bang into or vibrate against anything either.
Why such a small bike ? I'd spend the money to swap it to a 1200 js
👍🏾
How's your fuel mileage since the tuning?
Ended up having to revert back to V&H recommended tune, as when trying to run the AutoTune, the bike was running poorly. I should have a video up tomorrow of that. With the V&H provided tune for high flow intake + big radius exhaust though, I'm getting poor gas mileage as well, averaging about 35-39mpg, fuel light usually comes on at about 60-70 miles in. Hopefully we'll figure out the AutoTune thing and get that fixed up!
Yup. Same problem here. I had the dealer do the download because I don't have a laptop....
I was averaging 45-47mpg before the tuning. Now I'm getting 32-34mpg.
+Black Star You too? That's crazy, I wonder why the mpg drops so significantly. Do you have the Vance and Hines FP3 as well?
No, I had the dealership do a download because I don't have a laptop, otherwise I would have bought the Screamin Eagle Street Tuner- which I'll probably have to do anyway.... :-/
The fuel mapping is super rich- I can smell it in the exhaust when I'm sitting at stoplights.
Some other things I've noticed since I had it tuned:
Cold idle is 1300rpm (was 1600rpm).
Warm idle is 1000rpm (was 900rpm).
Redline is over 6500rpm (was 5500rpm).
I haven't noticed any performance improvement, but I'm not making popcorn anymore when I let off the gas.
Gotcha, so your dealership gave you a new map through their laptop. Direct to your ECU from the sounds of it? (instead of being handled by a fuel controller.) The Fuelpak FP3 doesn't require a laptop, can connect to your phone, so long as it has bluetooth (using an iPhone w/ mine.) I noticed my idle change as well, between the stock map, V&H premade made, and when I was in autotune also.
I'll have to call V&H and ask them a few questions. When I do, I'll be sure to update via comment here. Thanks for sharing your experience as well Black Star!
Hey what happened to the NoFuckingFilter4000?
Sadly I had to upgrade, lol! The NFF4000 was a short lived system. AMAZING for increased air flow, but very risky, as the engine / throttle body could suck in things such as pigeons, candy, articles of clothing, and sometimes even small children. Risk < reward, lol
Are you @pwnstarzdotcom?
Start the engine
why do i need this bracket? this makes no sense
Is meant to run breather bolts through it to add support to the filter, so the throttle body isn't the only thing supporting it. It's not a requirement, but I had one already from a previous kit, so kept it and put it on.
I have looked everywhere trying to find what size the breather bolt socket is and this vid was just as disappointing 😢
Chinese parts on a Harley
This coming from a dude that had his completely fall apart?
"Completely fall apart," lol. Yeah, the face plate and filter fell off b/c it was retained by one bolt that wasn't long enough (as stated by mfg, 44mag bolt didn't have long enough threading) therefore even with loctite, still managed to shake out b/c not enough threading caught. Somehow that's "completely falling apart" though, right? Nah. Did you watch the video? B/c if you did, you'll note that I even say to LEARN FROM MY MISTAKES, and use thread locker on all the screws and bolts, as well as mention torque specs, and following direction for whatever air cleaner you end up installing.
In the 'suggested videos' at the end, I even include the video to where the filter fell off. Would I do that if I was at fault and take away from my own credibility? Definitely not, lol. Thanks for playing #MoveItAlong
BLOCKHEAD backing plate was all that was still on so yeah, "completely fell apart" and take it personally if you want but you're a novice, and I wouldn't want one of your videos to be suggested to someone else that's in need of assistance. Think of it this way, what if you start doing major modifications like shocks etc and the same thing happens to some kid that watched your video about it and he has his shocks fail on the highway? Now granted that's his fault, but still. Just be aware that anyone can be watching your videos. Granted these are just bolt on parts but you've seemed to have managed to botch even that so how can a person trust you with more than an air cleaner? Unless you're a mechanic you shouldn't be posting how to's. And btw you're really not doing sportster riders a service, just adding to the stereotype.
+Rooster How did I "botch" that air cleaner that ended up falling off again? Please tell me how you seem to be more insightful to what happened with that than I am. As stated, the bolt that was provided that held the faceplate as well as filter onto that model air cleaner was not long enough from the manufacturer. Even though I put loctite on the bolt, it did not catch enough threading to securely hold and ended up slowly vibrating out. The mfg even noted this on a phone call.
The air cleaner I had on before that held strong, but the breather bolts didn't line up with a rigid backing plate since the jugs are off. 2nd one, mfg bolt was the problem, sent it back as it was a poor design. 3rd, holding strong and no probe at all except blowby.
So again, please tell me how I've "botched" this?
Also, I wasn't aware of a stereotype for Sportster riders, but please elaborate on that if you'd be so kind...
BLOCKHEAD shouldn't common sense tell you to get a longer bolt? Or not buy cheap shit? You're a novice. Which is fine but why are you making how to videos when you yourself need to watch a few?
I'd love to go on and on with you about this, but this comment proves to me that you have absolutely no insight into what you're talking about when it comes to installing a DK Customs HiFlow 587 air cleaner. I'll chalk up your lack of insight on that, as well as your lack of knowledge on me and my background with anything mechanical, to ignorance. All good! Again, move it along, and thanks for playing! Have a great day :)
Do not ride in the rain with this!!
Hack work do not install this way
