I think it might be both the sound track and clashing graphics that made it creepy, like how the first time you jump up you get a screen flash and a pillar of fish forms upward into the sky. The varying loud and soft tones just add to it. It's creepy and unsettling because it just seems too innocent, I know exactly how you feel.
With this walkthrough I feel like I have the secrets to life now. This game was such a challenge and a bit hard to understand without some toysrus cheat book. Lmao
I really don't think the game explained itself very well and whacked up the difficulty far to quickly. You end up not really knowing what to do and are on an extremely short clock to boot.

Me with all the boys in the neighborhood (we were maybe 15) could never get passed 42:20...never, we did everything we could, we couldn't read in English, it was not our language...we were playing on black and white TVs then and had no idea these spheres were different colors and you are not supposed to touch some...it was the biggest mystery of our childhood, that fucking creature used to kill my Ecco within a few seconds every time...my biggest gaming achievement as a child (10 years old) in pre-internet time was the point where I came up with the cheat idea to just try random codes to get the password of some later chapters so we could just finish the game! I still listen to the soundtrack and this game remains one of the top ones in my life!

I got lost just watching this person play it. This game is complex as fuck! Without a guide I'd never complete this. After watching this playthrough imma say at least I tried. I was around 13 when this game came out. My cousin and I had started a collection of games, including this one, after his mom past away. This game, is also the very last game my cousin and I were playing, when he was killed. After that, I NEVER picked up another controller, to ANY game, EVER again. Honestly, we became so close, like a brother and sister, it was because of games like this one! Thanks for posting this and reminding me of him and putting a smile on my face! Thank you, again!!

I was maybe 5 playing this and I was so freaking scared like this was my first horror game losing my family was just so damn scary the beginning was just so damn scary all alone not knowing what to do I think I beat it tho I got to the part where there were sharks and I started to feel better at that point because I knew I could at least beat sharks but this game changed my whole perspective of what the ocean is like to this day and I’m so glad I played it

Honestly I’m all the way at welcome to the machine and it has to be one of the hardest levels I ever played in my life I used to play Ecco on one of those plug and play systems back in like 2003 and I never made it far but now that I’m at the machine I can now see why I didn’t get far because the game is brutally difficult

I loved thus game as a kid. I made it well past the Deep Sea level but I never finished it. There were so many other games out or coming out that I completely checked out. I even got this on my Segs CD and again I didn't finish it. I may beat it on my Genesis Mini...I don't know. I'm so hung up on my Core Grafx Mini thst it will likely be a while. Addendum- The scaling and rotation on this game through a stock Genesis is amazing. I remember a time when Nintendo did their damndest to convince us that the Snes was the only 16-bit machine capable of this feat...of course it was a lie. The Genesis has the ability to do this through sheer brute force. Having two separate processors help to make this possible. I had an Snes as well as the Sega Genesis/Sega CD.

I can honestly say that I didn't even manage to get past the first mission. For about 2 days. Then I got frustrated and just said fook it and did a really big jump. Boom. Mind blown. But didn't make it past level 3
