Switching Tesla Model S Long Range for an MG5 - first impressions, efficiency and real range test.

  • Well in the end I sold my amazing Tesla Model S Long Range that I previously completed the John O’Groats to Lands End challenge in. Will miss it but it was time to move it on.
In this episode I travel to meet the new owner, hand it over and then drive back in the part exchange car which is an MG5. A very practical family estate electric car.
Why don’t we see more estate (wagon) EVs???
I give my first impressions of it plus get my first measure of what it’s efficiency and real-world range actually is in mixed driving conditions.
Overall I’m very impressed indeed. A great value family electric car that deserves good praise indeed. I look forward to trying to facelift version coming out soon!
And I’ll also miss Nigel (the model S LR)
    Thanks for watching!

I bought a pre registered pre facelift Mg5 Long range for £22k with 4 years free servicing. Had for nearly a year and have driven 12k miles commuting and my computer average since new is 4.2miles per kWh but I mostly drive eco mode kers3.
Charging at night for 8p per kWh using a granny cable and a timer socket so haven’t needed to install a 7kw charger yet. 2p per mile motoring 👍🏼

An excellent "first impressions" review I feel. I have the original so-called short range version, in the lower trim Excite model, so don't have all of the bells and whistles, but even so I am very, very pleased with it. As you say, it is comfortable and drives well. Even with the smaller battery I am getting about 240 miles per charge with "sensible" driving in the summer, and at the moment (cold December) I am still getting about 210 miles.A quick look at Autotrader shows that this model is pulling about £20k second-hand, but since I paid only £24750 for mine, new, 15 months ago, I think that is a real bargain (not that am thinking of selling!!)

I would love to get 210 miles in my mg5 lr. In summer 250miles no problems but at the moment I’m around 180 miles. I do stay in Aberdeen where there is snow which doesn’t help. My daily commute to work in summer was over 4 and now it’s a little over 2.

Excellent first impresson might be, but driven it 10k miles in 3 months I would say I am not disappointed as my first impression of this car was: cheap chinese car, infotainment is a joke on Excite Satnav load up time over 2 minutes, after testing it never bothered with it, in this time all sorts of software issues one time car lit up as Christmas tree, friend changed his rental Mg5 3 times for issues like HV Battety startup failure, and what about backseat lighting??? Check video you won't find one, same with boot, you will use your phone, whenever you drop something at the back, which is unacceptable at this price, I could go on like back hurting from that sooo comfortable seat, on the positive side suspension is great gear changing is simple and great car is responsive, but not as efficient as video says, I've done 300miles with one charge, it's possible, but on motorway range drops significantly from 250 to around 170, which is same range in winter when you drive with heating on all day, same range I done with the smaller battery hyundai ioniq ev which has an official range of 190 miles. Overall I would not recommend for a buy. I switched to a Mitsubishi Outlander better value for money.

As usual a pleasant and well informed video from you. I watch them all and go green wiith envy at the expensive models that are often your subjects. At last you got around to the MG5.
I have to say your initial feelings are the echo of my own after 23,000 miles. My 3 pet hates are No1 no interior or courtesy light in the rear seating. No2 the heated mirrors are activated by switching on the rear screen heater but they don't get warm. No3 no ski hole in the centre rear seat to taken my fishing rods.
My 1st year (18,000 miles) was at 4.2 miles per kwh.

I’ve had an MG5 like the test vehicle for over a year, my stats are: 57 charging cycles (mixture of home and public charges) 8497 miles, charging cost total for year was £985.70, equates to 12p per mile. Service charge was £120, battery deg to 99.5%. Very please with the car, definitely won’t be going back to an ICE. MG are also giving an amazing discount if you qualify for the Affinity Scheme of £6K on the new MG5, luckily I did qualify on my older model, and got £5k off list price. A great car, probably the best in the price range, I won’t be selling mine for a long time :)

I have a SW Excite model with 17000 miles under its belt. Real world 220 in summer, 200 in winter. I drive this car the same as a normal vehicle, used for commuting, tip runs, family trips, holidays included Aberdeen. I find it best to drive in eco mode most of the time, cuts down on wheel spin, in town I use level 3 regen, level 1 on open roads. The software has “glitched” 3 or 4 times in 16 months. Just stop, turn off and lock car for a couple of minutes then start again as normal, all fixed. Full service in Lincoln less than £100 to include full AA membership for another year. On some sunny days in tourist mode I have seen 5 m/pkwhr! Awesome! In Sport Mode it’s bonkers but can be useful for overtaking in the right circumstances! Would definitely think about upgrade to new model if the deal is right. Thanks for reading.

Interesting comments Christopher. My situation is almost exactly the same as yours. I drive using ECO and level 3 regen most of the time. My average for 9 months driving is 4.4m/kWh. My daily commute ranges from 3.0m/kWh on the coldest days to 5.2 on the warmest low traffic days. I think the MG5 is good value because it only has what it needs to do the job. Its 0-60 time is nowhere near as fast as a Tesla but do I need 0-60 in 3 seconds .... not really. So the motor is smaller and costs less. Also it only has one motor not two like some Tesla models. The battery is also 'big enough'. No it won't do 300+ miles but do I need that range ... no I don't. I think the MG brand business model is clever. I am over the moon with mine - the ride quality sold it within a few 100 yards. It has nothing that it doesn't need. It reminds me of my 05 Golf estate TDI which was again genius design and value. I intend to keep mine for many years as a family trip, dump run, commuter, Dad taxi very cheap to run smart looking vehicle. I hope you have many more happy miles in yours.

Now being retired and looking for my first EV, my wife and I test drove the latest version of this vehicle. Actually I was surprised how small it actually was, in videos it looks Passat size, but really a segment below. I found that shoulder to shoulder room quite cramped, and seats were hard in the rear. Once I put my grandsons baby seat in the rear, there was only room for one more passenger. I agree it scores in the value for money stakes, and drives quite well, but it got a no from she who must be obeyed, so the search goes on.

Hi, thanks for the video. Driving up the M3 from Bournemouth to Winchester today the white lines are very difficult to see. The painted over lines that have been altered for the roadworks reflect the light so it becomes difficult to distinguish the white lines from the supposedly obscured ones. Question: how does Lane Assist respond to this? Usually the first thing we do is turn it off? In theory it should be helpful on motorways, less so on country lanes ! My wife hates being dragged about by our Peugeots lane assist. How do different vehicles respond?

  • @ValZakharov

Could you make a video or have you already done one about the fact or myth how often supercharging is killing the battery? In theory it's kind of obvious that fast charging does make battery to degrade but maybe Tesla thought about it in advance and introduced some battery management system. Otherwise they would've changeв most of the dead batteries by warranty.

European cars are built much better and that's reflected in the price, also it helps European Jobs and doesn't send money to China. The only reason you see more European cars break down with costly repair bills is because some people are stupid and don't get the car serviced and also when was the last time you saw a petrol or diesel Chinese car on the road ? Chinese cars are perfect for the 1st owner who plans to keep it for 3 or 4 years and that's what drives sales, MG couldn't care less about the longevity of their product or if it will be king of the used car forecourt or not.

I’d go with a facelift mg5. Great used prices, 7 year warranty and good reliability as it’s been around a few years in china.
The pre facelift infortainment is basic but good enough but there’s no app support for charging timer etc so facelift model is better. Compare prices

Test drove one of these at Fully Charged Live and was underwhelmed - I found the steering vague and it ran out of grip pretty quickly on roundabouts, without much provocation.

If the MG was traded in its unusual to move from a car thats less than a year old to one with over 80k miles on it.

The model S had under 50k miles. But they’re just the ultimate long range EVs and with superb software too

I believe that the reason was made clear for that unusual move. The new owner required an even longer daily range.

I see EV second hand prices have continued to fall this month again, whilst ice second hand car prices are rising still, similar to lithium ion battery capacity, sand flowing away in an hour glass. There is a reason EV prices are falling, nobody wants them after all the bad press and reality dawning.

Creating an electric car is the perfect opportunity to create a car from the ground up and re-inventing the driving experience. What has MG done with the interior of this? Absolutely nothing.

    • @ewdack
      @ewdack Год назад +1

The MG5 isn't an EV from the ground up. In other parts of the world you can get them with a petrol engine.
